While living in Florida and wanting to be nearer to family in New England, Jean Smolen stumbled upon the local Landmark being marketed by Preservation of Wilson. She fell in love with the architecture and immediately shared it with her husband, Gary. He agreed and they began to research the work of nationally-known American architect, George Barber. Barber was best known for his residential designs which were marketed worldwide through mail-order catalogs. Many of his homes are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and dozens more are listed as part of historic districts around the nation. Decades earlier the major part of the front wrap-around porch was enclosed. The Smolens have opened the porch back up and fully restored the original look of the exterior. They repaired all of the 33 original windows and only needed to rebuild 13 of them. According to Gary, “It would have been easier, and cheaper, to replace the old windows with new windows, but we decided the look and originality of the old windows was worth hanging on to.” With them they brought along both their mothers, three pets, and future visits from their four children and two grandkids. Gary’s mother, Alma is living at the Landings at Parkwood Village and interestingly lives right down the hall from Lane Corbett who grew up in the same house her son and daughter-in-law are restoring. Lane has visited the house several times and is happy to see it returning to its former grand self. Jean is retired from the State of New Hampshire Department of Education and is an avid quilter. She has transformed the upstairs front room into her sewing room giving her plenty of natural light. Gary is a retired marketing consultant which will add value to Preservation of Wilson’s Marketing Committee as he takes on the role as a new member. Jean and Gary immediately embraced Historic Downtown Wilson by opening their home for the 2015 Holiday Homes Tour sponsored by the City of Wilson, Historic Preservation Commission. The Smolen Family is another example of how folks are beginning to look at our historic districts as charming, with an abundance of affordable homes, and a community with great potential. PRESERVATION OF WILSON

VOLUME 9, ISSUE 1 WINTER 2016

Williams-Woodard-Banks House finds new owners

Built in 1898, the Williams-Woodard-Banks House, 501 Broad Street, located in the Broad-Kenan Historic District has new owners - the Smolen family. This is the second time the house has been sold by Preservation of Wilson. The Smolens have

opened the porch back up and fully restored the original look of the exterior. They repaired all of the 33 original windows and only needed to rebuild 13 of them. According to Gary, “It would have been easier, and cheaper, to replace the old windows with new windows, but we

decided the look and originality of the old windows was worth hanging on to.” With them they brought along both their mothers, three pets, and future visits from their four children and two grandkids.

Preservation NC Award goes to

De Perlinghi Jerome and Rosa De Perlinghi have been awarded a 2015 Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit from Preservation NC for their work with Eyes on Main Street. Presented since 1974, the Awards of Merit give recognition to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated a genuine commitment to historic preservation through extraordinary leadership, research, philanthropy, promotion, and/or significant participation in preservation. Preservation NC, founded in 1939, promotes and protects the buildings and landscapes of the state’s diverse heritage. Between the complete restoration of the Mack Bass House, an endangered 1913 Colonial Revival-style house in the Broad-Kenan Historic District; The Wilson Project, which showcased 90 black-and-white portraits of people from all walks of the community; and with inspiration from The Wilson Project, De Perlinghi was led to another exhibit entitled Eyes on Main Street. Jerome created the concept: 100 windows, 100 images, 100 days. Nash Street, the main street of Wilson was transformed into a vibrant outdoor gallery spanning six city blocks. The second edition of Eyes

on Main Street will kick-off with a Street Party on April 9th and will run until July 10, 2016. B. Perry Morrison, Jr., past-president of Preservation of Wilson and a volunteer for the festival says "The De Perlinghis' arrival in our community might in future years be viewed as a watershed moment in Wilson's history. They have brought energy, enthusiasm, talent and artistic direction to an area of Wilson that was tired and depressed. They have awakened in all of our citizens a sense of pride in community, as well as a realization of how important cultural tourism can be as a driving force for economic development." Letter from the Director The start of a new year has always been one of my favorite times. I am not sure if it is because I have a January birthday or just because I love change. Whatever it is, I welcome 2016 and all that is possible with you along side of Preservation of Wilson. With our new ads promoting Wilson as a small town with big advantages, we are getting the message out that Historic Downtown Wilson offers charming and affordable homes. With our tree-lined neighborhoods, vibrant arts community, ideal location 40 minutes to Raleigh, less than an hour to an international airport, two hours to the beach, and four to the mountains coming home to Wilson is becoming an option for many. With Raleigh’s housing

prices more than double that of Wilson, we are positioned for much growth. Please join us on this exciting adventure. Your support; time, talent and treasure, is vital to ensuring the success of the preservation mission. Whether you serve on a committee, have been elected as a Trustee, or make a gift, you are contributing to the enhancement of our historic districts. Thank you for your past and future participation and generosity. We are glad to have you on the Preservation Team! Kathryn Ferrari Bethune

The Business of Preservation of Wilson

President Buck Yelverton leads the Annual Meeting on January 14th held at the Wilson Visitors Center. Trustees meet quarterly, however, the first meeting of the year is our Annual Meeting. This is a joint meeting with Trustees and Committee Members giving us an excellent opportunity to come together for social time and then the business at hand. We have Board approved Operating Procedures and a strong committee structure in place to help us reach our preservation goals.

Preservation of Wilson holds it’s Trustee Meetings at the Wilson Visitors Center. With a smaller crowd than the Annual Meeting we are able to conduct business in the Board Room for a less formal setting.

This photo comes from the last meeting of 2015 with Frank Eagles presiding as President.

If you would like to be part of a committee, please let one of our Trustees know or contact Kathy Bethune at 252-234-7694 or [email protected].

We are currently seeking additional committee members for the Hospitality Committee. If you enjoy being a part of event planning and cooking, please give us a call!

Page 9

After serving as President for two years, Frank L. Eagles will pass the honor to Buck Yelverton, Jr. Since 2006 and the creation of Preservation of Wilson as we know it today, we are grateful to the following Past-Presidents. J. Robert Boykin, III (2006-08) Garland Homes, Jr. (2008-11) B. Perry Morrison, Jr. (2011-13) Dr. Frank L. Eagles (2013-15) The original concept of Preservation of Wilson was formed in 1984 as the Historical Preservation Fund of Wilson County, Inc. under the visionary leadership of other community preservationists: James E. Fulghum H. M. Jeffries, Jr. Ruth J. Davis Russell A. Thompson Lawrence Brett

Left and in the center, Rev. Charles Robl III is ready to start work as a new Trustee. With lessons from Past Presidents’ Perry and Frank he’s on the right path.

Jay Province, on the right, is a member of the Properties and Marketing Committees, in addition to being the current President of the Old Wilson Neighbors Association, the local historic neighborhoods association. This group has been active for decades and is gaining new speed with the increased interest in the affordable and unique housing stock in Historic Downtown Wilson. For more information on the neighborhood group, email Secretary, Leslie Flowers at [email protected].

Center City Partners

Center City Partners is a program Preservation of Wilson developed to foster long-term success through on-going partnerships. This offers organizations with common interests to seek ways to strengthen relationships and identify partnership opportunities.

With an informal structure and flexibility, the program identifies four groups: Saving Neighborhoods Together, Building the Arts through Partnerships, Preserving Our Past and Making the Connection. Under the leadership of the Visioning Committee, one of our goals is to form a Steering Committee for “Saving our Neighborhoods Together.” It is no surprise we turned to Barbara Blackston, Executive Director of the Wilson Community Improvement Association. For the January Committee meeting we met at WCIA’s headquarters located in the former Mercy Hospital on Green Street. This Neo-Classical Revival structure, circa 1913, is fully restored and also home to the Mercy Business Training and Development Center. WCIA are true partners with

their mission to improve the quality of life of all residents in Wilson and surrounding counties by building and supporting stable, safe and economically viable neighborhoods According to Blackston, “From the beginning WCIA recognizes that to bring about change within our community we needed partners. No one entity can do it alone; you must have partners to achieve the greatest impact of community revitalization. We wel-come the opportunity to partner with Preservation of Wilson in its efforts of revitalization.”

We invite all housing partners to get involved. To learn more, please visit our website and click on Center City Partners. And as Barbara says, “no one entity can do it alone!”

Lu-Ann Monson chats with two staff members of WCIA during the reception prior to the Annual Meeting. To the right of Lu-Ann is Tacita Hamilton, Housing Counselor and Deanie Dawson, Housing Director.

Message from the President It is a true honor to be selected to serve as President of the Board of Trustees of Preservation of Wilson. Previous Presidents have set a high bar of excellence in leadership and promotion which our Board and various committees will strive to maintain and expand. We are blessed with an excellent Executive Director Kathy Bethune, whose contract has been renewed by the Board for another two years. Her hard work and guidance the past eight years are greatly appreciated by all. We are taking steps to empower our committees to have more voice at Executive Board meetings and Board of Trustees meetings. Additionally, we have initiated a dialog with our counterparts at the Wilson Community Improvement Association. Our plan is to work more closely with these friends in the coming weeks and months to provide preservation services to all citizens of Wilson County. We have outstanding new Trustees and committee members as mentioned in other places in this Newsletter. These folks, along with our current active Trustees and committee members, provide great community resources that will carry our Preservation of Wilson organization through a productive 2016.

Thanks for all your support, input, and interest.
