MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Welcome to another wonderful week in Rotary! Thank you to those Rotarians who joined in all the fun at The Rotary Club of East Keilor’s Trivia Night last Friday night. It is wonderful to see so many local people come together to have such a great evening but at the same time raise money for projects that connect our Community. Money raised will be donated to the hard-working group of ladies from the Airport West Uniting Church who gather together to knit for the needy…warm items for those less fortunate than others. They are also planning on setting up a Men’s support group also. Well done all. Lisa Lowcock, Grant Stephenson & I attended a seminar on Sunday called “Together We Connect”. District 9800 are very focused on Rotary Club’s improving their Public Image & this information session was very worth-while. We need to be telling others what we are doing & celebrating the fantastic work that Rotarians are doing around the world, including our very own special Club, Essendon. Please contribute to our Club’s work in improving our very own Public Image. Thank you to Peter Condos, Community Director, who is now heading up a Task Team to work on the Web-page & Lisa Lowcock for working on Facebook. Thank you to those members who are assisting & if anyone else is Interested in helping….we absolutely need you so
WHAT’S ON NEXT WEEK
Next week Larry Marshall will deliver his badge talk, Larry says he is a proud Sri Lankan Australian, he migrated to
Melbourne with his family 50 years ago. Larry has been a teacher in schools, TAFE and Universities. He was a radio
journalist for the ABC and spent four years in the Philippines as a development worker with Australian Volunteers
Abroad. Larry coordinated the ‘Muslim Leadership programme’ for the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University. He
currently works as a Project Manager on ‘Uniting Through Faiths’ with the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and
Tasmania.
Larry will be accompanied by Jeremy Liyanage and Shyama Fuad who will also speak about their joint community project
‘Bridging Lanka’ which involves Community Harmony, Care for Environment, Education for all Women, Eco-Tourism as
well as Urban Development
please join in. We will then be able to tell everyone about this fabulous Club we all so proudly belong to. All ideas are very welcome. This week’s Guest Speaker was Rotary’s very own Stephanie Woollard, from “Seven Women” hearing all about her fantastic work in Nepal. (More later in Contact). As a total coincidence, I received an email this week from a Rotarian from Nepal asking if he could attend our Club’s meeting. His Club is the Rotary Club of Matribhumi, Baluster, Nepal-Bhutan. He told us they were charted 2 years ago & are a Club of about 30 members, all 20 to 30 year olds. He is currently in Melbourne on Business. Following is his email to me: "It was good to have a visit in your prestigious club. I am privileged to have myself as Guest (Visiting Rotarian) from the meeting i have learnt a lot about the meeting cultures and the fellowship environment you all are having in the club. Being a club from Nepal i would like to invite your club members and yourself to the beautiful Himalayan Country Nepal. Would like to express my huge respect to you all for providing me time. Hope to do some service projects in Nepal with your all support and our energy. Long live Nepal Australia Relationship. Long Live Rotary Relationship. Regards! Bishnu Hari Dahal Young Entrepreneur | Social Activist | Politician" Have a wonderful week ahead. Kind Regards President Jenny THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort & convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge & controversy” - Martin Luther King Jr. Meeting 15th August 2017
Visitors; Charles and Nick Foster, Andrew and Samantha Lowcock and Karl Irvine, Sana and Lauren Halaseh, Jane Odgers, Jenny Nola, Janice Memery, Deb Slogget, Bishnu Dahal – visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Matnibhumi Baluwatar in Nepal.
Bishnu Dahal from Nepal told us about his club which was inducted only a couple of years ago. It is made up of Rotarians all around 28 years of age.
The club has been very active and has been self-sustaining in funding all their projects to date. Nepal is currently undergoing massive disaster management due to the flooding which is affecting over 30% of the country. Following on from other recent disasters such as the earthquake a couple of years ago, the country is under duress. Bishnu asks us all to spare a thought and a prayer for those involved. Bishnu attended tonight with no knowledge that our guest speaker Stephanie has been very active in Nepal and they are now connected through Rotary and will liaise to further the reach of both Rotary in Nepal and Seven Women.
Guest Speaker; Stephanie Woollard from “Seven Women”. For more information about Seven Women go to the web site http://www.sevenwomen.org/
Young Australian social entrepreneur Stephanie Woollard began Seven Women at only 22, after meeting seven disabled women operating out of a tin shed in Kathmandu struggling to make a living and enduring harsh discrimination. With her last $200, she paid for trainers to up skill the women to produce products for sale locally and abroad - and so Seven Women was born. Since 2006, Seven Women has built a team of fantastic people, that have been working to set Seven Women Australia up as a fundraising arm and sales channel for our ever growing operation in Nepal. Seven Women Nepal's focus is on empowering marginalised Nepalese women through equipping them with the skills and the know how to thrive. Eleven years after her first
encounter with the seven women that started it all, over 5,000 women have been educated, trained and employed transforming their lives and their communities. One of the best ways to support Seven Women is to buy their products and tell your friends to do the same. The handmade range has some great gift ware, winter woollies and light colourful accessories to brighten up any outfit. All products are 100% fair trade, with all profit going toward supporting our programs. Hands-On-Development runs immersive tours to Nepal aimed at challenging and broadening perspectives and developing understanding of Nepal by experiencing different aspects of its society. These tours allow visitors to meet and share with Nepali people so they can learn and grow through experiencing their culture and daily life. Seven Women exists today because of the thousands of people who have donated to our programs and bought our fair-trade products. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and can be made on our donate page. Only $250 will send a girl to college for a year, including all her books and stationery. A donation of $1,200 supplies a year's wages for a woman to train and learn the new skills that will enable her to earn an income and become financially independent. Stephanie encouraged all of us to be responsible as consumers and business people and deal with ethically responsible companies.

Maurice remembers
For the first 40 years of our Club, time was set aside for a sing along. Blue covered song books were given to all members to
help with the words of favourites, “the old grey mare” and “home on the range”. Syd Steel, a former President was the
pianist when we met at Ascot House. Incoming President John Hussey and President nominee John Green abandoned the sing
along in 1976. In later years members joined in to sing Carols at our Christmas function. Some of the singing was “awful” and
many members were advised not to give up their day jobs!
THE GLORIOUS & GOLDEN HISTORY OF OUR CLUB
83 years young and still going strong- the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc.
President Jenny has decided she would like to see the Club’s history printed during her year of office. As a younger member of
the Club it is important to her that we can have a better understanding of the Club’s fabulous past as we plan for the future.
An earlier history was published circa 1958 and updated each year until 1981.
Maurice Mollica has agreed to manage the book’s production and has also asked Past President and former member Alan
Murphy to write the book. Maurice Mollica will assist with the research & Stephen Chandler has agreed to select photographic
material. Stephen will also help Alan with material he collected, dating back to the Club’s earliest days. Any additional photos or
information from members, past or present, or from family & friends, would be most appreciated. They may not all be printed
in the book but it would be a wonderful time to gather them all together.
Alan spoke to Club Members on 1 August about how he plans on working on this publication. He is rewriting the previous
history and adding additional research. He will also need to contact club office-bearers for each of the 36 years, since histories
were produced. His commitment to the Club is to complete the writing by end of January, with a view to having the book
released in May, 2018. This will coincide with the celebration of 30 years, next year, since Royce Abbey became Rotary
International President…a very special part of this Club’s history.
President Jenny will also be speaking to the “Probus Club of Essendon Central” next week & will be advising members there
also about our “work in progress” as we all connect together.
Any queries or comments about the book should be directed to Maurice Mollica please. All support is most appreciated.
