The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway installed Donna Kumar as president, along with a new executive board, and introduced new standing committee chairmen at a meeting at the Lakeway Resort and Spa.

Outgoing president Sharon Gilmore welcomed 125 women to a day of ceremony and entertainment from Dottie’s Follies, who performed a dance routine to the Yellow Rose of Texas – the theme for the event. Dee Ann Burns, chairman of the event, thanked her committee and explained that signature roses symbolized friendship and love.

Gilmore celebrated the past year’s club activities and thanked her full board for their diligent, faithful service which created all the memorable events that enriched the club and its members.

“I have met the most talented people this year. I remember saying that there is no reason to be lonely in Lakeway. Get involved, volunteer, and join one of our 23 special interest groups. You won’t regret stepping out of your comfort zone. You never know what adventure lies ahead. Our Women’s Club is evolving as we approach our 32nd year. It’s important to keep our eyes on the future and be relevant to each other and to the community. We are a team. We are one,” Gilmore said.

Donna Kumar presented Gilmore with a crystal gavel as a symbol of appreciation for the kind guidance she demonstrated in her role as club president.

Next, Gilmore turned over the presidential gavel to new president, Donna Kumar. In Kumar’s acceptance, she expressed her thanks for the honor and her heartfelt desire to do the best job to fulfill her duties, bring honor to the club, to serve and promote the organization and, lastly, to build new friendships while cherishing and nurturing the ones she already has.

“During the past 10 years, I have accepted many different roles and learned so much along this journey. This club has taught me about community and how important it is to reach out to others, to work as a team to promote the greater good of the club. It has taught me the responsibility of showing up with a smile and doing what you commit to do. It has taught me the fine art of friendship,” Kumar said.

Head to the Lakeway Act iv i ty Center thi s August for the boldest big band music in the city.

For great dancing and listening, the 17-piece Republic of Texas Big Band head l ine s the monthly Lakeway Big Band Bash from 8-10 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Lakeway Activity Center ballroom, 105 Cross Creek.

Enjoy a large dance floor in an air conditioned ballroom with tables available for your own treats (e.g., champagne and caviar) at a place where you may invite your friends without the hassle of reservations.

The Lakeway Arts Committee hosts the free monthly dance. Donations to the band are encouraged.

The Republic of Texas Big Band is a collection of professional people, several of whom actually earn a living as musicians of one kind of another. It is a community band, meaning it started as a group of people who loved big band music and needed to play somewhere.

Kent Dugan leads the band and brings his own book of around 200 tunes. Dugan played his first job as a big band musician in 1960 while in high school, and has played in big bands ever since.

Return to the Activity Center on Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. for a free concert by The Vintage 15.

The showband will perform one hour of swinging big band music in a Las Vegas and Branson-style for your listening pleasure. No tickets or reservations required.

The Vintage 15 is the nation’s hottest up-and-coming big band. They perform jazz and swing standards from the golden era with a modern twist: achieving an unforgettable mixture of chemistry and sizzling tunes.

Combined with a meticulously crafted music library covering everything from Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr., Ella Fitzgerald to Michael Bublé, the Vintage 15 plays with a swagger unlike any other big band out there.

“Many people wish big band music would be available again,” Lakeway Arts Committee Chairman Fred Newton said. “Lakeway is doing something to meet those wishes.”

For information, call the Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010.

2015 was one of the best years for home sales since 2006. The median home prices were up 6-8% over the previous year and just outside of the 4-6% considered sustainable. Inventory has tightened due to increased demand from lower interest rates and the influx of new residents moving to Texas faster than the new home construction market growth. The Austin real estate market is great, however a shift is underway as is typical for the market every 7-8 years.

A great real estate agent understands the market by staying on top of what is happening and that is just one reason to work with a pro. We at Keller Williams Realty International utilize the very best tools and training with offices around the globe to succeed and always stay ahead of the curve.

Local ar t i s t Margaret Osburn will exhibit at the Lake Travis Community Library in the month of August. Osburn has been painting with a passion for more than five decades. Her style of art is as eclectic as her life experience. Having lived in nine states and three foreign countries, you can see the influence of the various cultures – the American South, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East - through her choice of color, theme, and texture.

Along her journey, she studied under Townsend Wolfe (Memphis, TN), Elva Fairchild (Panama), and Jack Perlmutter (Maryland). She moved from member

Lake Travis Library Eventto State President for the National League of American Pen Women, an organization committed to spotlighting the creative talents of women in an age where women weren’t typically recognized. She has been consistently active in local art clubs and guilds including the Palo Verde, Lakeview, and Vanguard Art Clubs in Sun City, Arizona.

Although oil is her most frequently used media, she also works in acrylic, pen and ink, and watercolor. Margaret’s favorite media is collage. Her works include portraits, landscapes, seascapes, abstracts collages, and montages. She has applied her artistic talent to set and prop design for the Dreamweaver’s of West Tennessee community theater in Savannah, TN. Her work has been displayed at the former Pritikin Longevity Center and various hospitals, libraries, a courthouse, and the Tennessee River Museum.

Margaret shares her knowledge by teaching classes in painting and drawing everywhere she lives, including to other residents in her retirement community at Longhorn Village. She is the featured artist at Lake Travis Community Library for the month of August. There will be a reception on Saturday, August 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and a collage demonstration on Tuesday, August 16 beginning at 2 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Dead spots in the lawn? Look for chinch bugs….Chinch bugs often appear in Texas lawns during hot, dry

conditions. Usually damage starts in sunny locations or near driveway and sidewalk areas. Damage appears as irregular dead patches in the lawn surrounded by yellowing or dying grass. Chinch bug damage can be mistaken for other lawn problems like white grubs or fungal diseases, so confirmation of chinch bug activity is needed before choosing proper treatment.

So how do you tell if you have chinch bugs? The easiest way is to look for the insects. One way to look is to cut both ends out of a can, push it into the ground using a twisting motion and then fill the can with water for about 10 minutes and wait for any bugs to float to the top. Another way would be to get down on your hands and knees and part the grass to look for the insects. For both methods, samples should be taken in the damaged (yellowed grass), not dead, grass areas.

Chinch bugs are small (about 1/5 of an inch as adults; immatures are smaller). Adults are black with white wings containing triangular markings. Nymphs, or immatures, are yellowish or pinkish with a light colored band across their body. Nymphs do not have fully developed wings.

Treatment is usually a liquid or granular formulation. Liquid formulations are often bottles that attach to the end of the garden hose or concentrates that you mix with water in a tank sprayer. Granular formulations are applied with push spreaders and need to be watered in after treatment.

Treatment should be applied to the area where damage is occurring and several feet out from the damaged area; the entire yard does not have to be treated. All label instructions should be read and followed before and during the treatment.
