Why would some people around the world hate the US? I  po se d th at qu es tion to 12 coll eg e- ag e  people from Cameroo n, China, Gabon,England, Germany ,Thailand, Uzbekistan and the United States. I met each of these people randomly during my travels for study and vol- unteer work but in no way claim this as a sociological, psychological or in other words scienti fic study . I asked difficult questions and received hon- est opinions. In a worl d that grows more interconnected daily let’s listen to our neighbors. In my research I found themes,  be gi nn in g wi th Amer ic a’ s oi l ad di c- tion. It’s no secret t hat America ru ns on oil. People like Clare D unnington, a civil engineering student in the UK are asking, “Why does America in- sist on owning nearly every oil re- serve it can lay its hands on?” She also added that Americans complain Anti-American Sentiments A One-On-One Perspective about gas prices while in the UK the  pr ic e is ov er d ou bl e wh at w e see a t the pump. A very closely related issue is war. As T ony Zhao, a university stu- dent in China says, “The US attacked Iraq because of the nuclear problem. But what if Iraq were not located in the Mid-East, or what if there was not so much petroleum there? W ould Iraq still be the fall guy? Many people in Iraq and some soldiers from the US died for this reason. Worthy?” Dunnington says, “If there were two countries like America they would destroy themselves because both would not be happy until they had  bet te r and bi gge r wea po ns th an th e other. The world can ’t function this way.” America’s irresponsible care for  See Sentiments Page 5 Science Building of the Past When walking into the science  bu il di ng on e m ig ht ge t t he fe el in g o f going back in t ime. Science is mov- ing forward so why is the building stuck in 1950? Many students may have asked themselves that very ques- tion when entering the building. Clocks off kilter eternally showing 2:30, broken ballasts and chipped table tops branded by chemicals-and that’s before you look up to see the ceiling. The peelin g paint an d ex-  po se d pi pe s ar en ’t as la rg e of an ey e- sore in other buildings on campus. This may give the impression that sci- ence isn’t as important to MSU-B as other subjects, which in turn could deter students from attending the uni- versity. With all these imperfections some students who spend a majority of their time in the Science building are wondering where their money is going. Mathew M achado, an Earth Science minor, had this to say, “Com-  pare d to o th er b ui ldings o n ca mp us , the equipment is pretty darn old. I mean, I’m paying for an earth sci- ence minor and I’m wondering what I’m paying for?” The professors feel that when it comes to the teaching, lecture stu- dents are getting what they pay for   bu t could pr ob ab ly st an d to se e some  bett er re so ur ce s.
