On the afternoon of October 9th, I will be visiting Beth Shalom Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. and Eagle Point Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., and inviting all those with loved ones buried there to join me for special prayers. Why do we do this? What is this custom all about?

First, please understand what this is not. Whereas other cultures and religions pray to the dead for various things, we do not. We only pray to Hashem, our G-d. Why then do we go to the cemetery, and why now?

We, as Jews, have a strong connection to our past. It is our history that grounds us, both personal and communal. As we approach the new year, we remind ourselves of that history by visiting and praying at the graves of loved ones. Some also have the custom of going to the graves of righteous ones from the past. We ask Hashem to remember their greatness and as a result to take mercy on us.

As we enter the year 5777, let us remember all of our rich history as Jews. Through that remembrance may we bring ourselves closer to Hashem and ultimate redemption. May we all be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

Rabbi Evan B. Rubin

Why Are We Visiting the Cemetery?

FROM THE RABBI

Nearly the entire month of October, 2016/Tishrei 5777 is very well aligned in the new Jewish year. That is just an observation I made while preparing to write this article. I love the Jewish calendar because it is ours to keep. We have our own time. We are finding out more and more about what it really means to keep track of time. Time brings motion into our lives and by virtue of time our world becomes dynamic. Time is the added dimension we must have to be alive in the world that surrounds us. It is time for us to celebrate the New Year, our New Year, 5777. L'shanah tovah! As we come together in the synagogue, let us all wish one another a healthy, sweet and prosperous 5777 and extend the same wishes to the entire community. We continue to strive for peace in our time. G-d willing, the New Year will bring tranquility to us as individu-als, to our families and to our world. Have a wonderful, sweet Rosh Hashana and a tranquil Yom Kippur. Let’s all dance together at Simchas Torah as we celebrate another year together.

Danny Becker, President

Etz Chayim’s Sisterhood’s diligent shoppers have noticed that there are a number of great and necessary Kosher food items at the new Fresh Thyme Market on Monroe Street. Items such as milk, cheeses, lox, and pie crusts have been spotted. The Etz Chayim Sisterhood will sponsor a Kiddush during a break on Rosh Hashanah and a Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast. The upcoming Sisterhood Sukkot Spaghetti Dinner will take place on Thursday, October 20th. The dinner will begin at 6:30 pm following services. We’ll have snacks in the sukkah first. Also, mark your calendar for these upcoming Kiddush lunches that will be co-sponsored by our Sisterhood: December 3, 2016, February 11, 2017, March 25, 2017, and May 6, 2017. If you are not currently a member of Sisterhood and would like to join, please contact Suzie Rosenberg, Membership Chairman. Yearly dues are $20. If you are currently a member of Sisterhood or are planning to join now and you are 60 or over, you can become a Life Member for $200. Please contact Suzie at 419-536-7758 to get all the details on both categories of membership. The next Sisterhood Board/Planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Shul Library. All Sisterhood members are invited to attend.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL CALENDAR—OCTOBER

A lone soldier is a person who serves in the Israeli Army who has no family living in Israel. On Sunday, October 9, 2016, Nickoline Muller Larsen, a lone soldier, will speak at Congregation Etz Chayim and describe her life as a soldier living in a country without any family close by. Nickoline’s mother was born in Israel and moved New York as a young child. She grew up and married and moved to Denmark with her husband who was in the medical field. Nickoline’s family visited Israel during the summer months and she became very fond of the country and ultimately decided to serve in the Israeli Army. She will be sharing her story with the congregation as well as anyone in the community who would like to attend. A light lunch will be served for a nominal fee of $5.00 per person beginning at 12:30 p.m. Please R.S.V.P. to the synagogue office at 419-473-2401.
