Dear Members, I wish you all a very fun, exciting and healthy Summer! When (Not "if"!) you start to miss some of your PWC friends, remember the great Summer Socials set up by Ann Polley and her committee. Also, the Night Division will continue to meet this Summer on

the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Deicke Auditorium (June 28, July 26, August 23). Bring a friend! Pat Hinde, Judy McLeod, Kim Zimmerman & myself will be representing you at the GFWC Florida convention. Judy is being honored as our Volunteer of the Year in District 13 with a special reception & table seating! As Pat and I wind up our current GFWC Florida positions, we will join the incoming GFWC Florida officers in new positions. Our own Beverly Payne is on the slate and running for the GFWC Florida position of "Member at Large" (the members rep. to the Executive Committee). Good Luck Bev! Of course, your current officers and committees will continue to meet over the summer, including work on a "Policies and Procedures" manual. Remember that our September 13 welcome back meeting will be our Bi-Annual "Sponsor Appreciation Lunch.” More info to follow, so don't miss it! Have a great Summer!

Darlene

It’s that time of year...Sending warmest wishes for Good Health and Wellness to all our members as our summer break begins in June. With deepest sympathy our thoughts and prayers go out to Tippi Drainer in the loss of her son-in-law recently. Also we’re holding both Donna & Karl Sachs in our hearts and prayers as he begins his chemotherapy treatments. And to Addie Travers and her family we wish strength and good cheer for her husband Don. Please continue to keep Margie Fetzer in your thoughts and prayers, too. As you know, the Sunshine Committee is always on call, so don’t hesitate to let us be aware of a member’s illness or even when just a simple “Thinking of You” card would be appropriate. Remember, it has been said, The Best of Healers is Good Cheer.”

Eirene Stansbury Sunshine Chair (954) 583-7638

Congress is considering FY 2017 appropriations bills to fund

services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Victims of

Crime Act (VOCA) and the Family Violence Prevention

Services Act (FVPSA) programs which are cost-effective and

lifesaving. Contact your Senator and Representative today and

encourage them to support federal funding for these programs.

Over 12 million individuals experience domestic violence

annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The National Domestic Violence Counts Census found that in

just one day during September 2015, while more than 71,828 victims of domestic violence received services, over 12,000

requests for services went unmet due to lack of funding and

resources. Of those unmet requests, 63 percent were for safe

housing. Also in 2015, domestic violence programs laid off over

1,200 staff positions, in addition to 1,400 staff positions laid off in

2014. Most of the laid off positions were direct service staff,

including counselors, advocates, and children's advocates.

Given reduced funding and staff, local programs had to reduce

or completely eliminate countless services, including emergency

shelter, legal advocacy, and counseling.

CDC data also reveals that almost 1 in 5 women will be the

victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. Attention to

campus and military sexual assault as well as high profile cases

has meant more victims have come forward needing recovery

services. According to a 2015 survey by the National Alliance to

End Sexual Violence, the nation’s 1,315 sexual assault

programs often lack the resources to meet victims’ most basic needs.Over 1/3 of rape crisis centers have a waiting list for

prevention programs and almost half have a waiting list for

counseling services. Wait times can range from 2 weeks to

3 months.

Increase Funding for Programs that Address Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Dating Violence & Stalking I was asked to have Renee put part of a letter I

received from the Plantation Fire Dept. regarding a request for their wish list. This is only a few paragraphs of what they wrote: Of what are heroes made? We often think of heroes as those who brave the dangers, against all odds to save the life of a stranger. Our images are those who would walk through fire, brave a hail of bullets, or step upon the trembling earth for the benefit of another. But true heroes are not always those who make headlines or impressive photos. More often than not, real heroes exist in the shadows, quietly working their magic again and again. Not for the sake of the camera, but for the betterment of the many. This is how we view the GFWC Plantation Woman's Club. Quietly, without herald, you do amazing things. Your kindness and generosity, although often marked by a simple sign, touches the lives of hundreds and continues to help make Plantation the great community that it is.

The Tiger Buck Store at Plantation Elementary has been a great success this year, thanks to all the generous donations from our club and all the volunteers working at the store. If you have any donations over the summer I will be happy to pick them up (954-792-7659) or you can bring them to the first meeting in September. The Junior Woman's Club is using money from its fundraisers to buy supplies for the school which is greatly appreciated, and we will work together to help the children.

Thanks, Judy McLeod

What a great way to stay connected during June, July and August when there are no morning General Meetings to attend. These outings are fun and social events. Please review the summer social schedule that was included in last month’s newsletter and see if you can attend one or two excursions. Please be mindful if the schedule states you must reply if you want to attend - in some cases a head count is needed for the price specified on the schedule. Contact Ann Polley at (954) 829-1997 or Sue Kuchenreuther at (954) 829-6553 if you would like to go.

Happy Summer Everyone!!

Our summer months are upon us and that means no morning Meetings, but that doesn't mean you have to look around for something else to do. Come join the Night Division and keep up with what’s going on with the Club during June, July and August.

The Night Division Meetings are every fourth Tuesday of each and every month at 7:00pm at Deicke. Hope we see you there!

If you are interested in a Board position for the 2016 - 2018 term, please contact a member of the nominating committee. Barbara Graveson is the Chair, but you can also contact Renee Flores, Sue Kuchenreuther, Eirene Stansbury or Gail Triviz.

Hope we hear from you!

Dive Team Coordinator Pete Gannon Dive Team Member Mike Brown assisted by Firefighter Michael Kassner

Feb 17, 2016….Article in Sun Sentinel Newspaper

Seconds are precious when rescuers are trying to save people from a vehicle in a canal or lake and now Plantation's volunteer firefighters are equipped to save some time.

For those involved in the rescue there's the tanks, the air-filled vest to maintain buoyancy, the mask, fins, gloves, snorkel, rope for a lifeline. The suiting up can take three to five minutes.

But with the new equipment that's part of the official dive team ensemble, it takes 30 seconds to a minute to suit up, minus the gloves, officials say.

"The difference is it's one piece and it goes on in one motion," said Plantation Fire Department spokesman Joel Gordon. Firefighters can "dress quickly [and] have what they need all at once."

The equipment is called the Aqua-Lung Rapid Diver System, and this month the city purchased five sets that cost $1,750 each.

The Plantation Women's Club donated the money.

Gordon said time is of the essence in these situations and the diver "throws it over the head, clips one belt and is ready to go."

"When a vehicle goes into the water it's very disorienting to the occupants of the vehicle," he said. "It's like hitting a brick wall at whatever speed you're going."

The clock starts ticking before the passengers stop breathing.

"Minutes are crucial," he said.

"Any diver knows how complicated it is to put on dive gear," said Pete Gannon, Dive Team Leader and president of Dive Rescue International.

"It can be very time consuming. And when you're doing it in a hurry you tend to forget things. This outfit contains everything. There's no need to second guess yourself," Gannon said.

Dear Jenny, Is it always necessary for members to stand for the Collect? Or can members remain seated? Also, is it necessary for the Collect to be recited at a particular time during the meeting? Wondering about protocol Dear Wondering: Our protocol does not specifically address the Collect, which is a collection of prayers Federation respects as basically our creed. So there is no requirement we must stand, or for that matter kneel. However, in practice, out of respect, those who are able to should stand. Not all clubs say the Collect, nor is it mandatory to do so. Per Roberts Rules, the meeting starts with the reading of the minutes, so what a club does beforehand is up to each club. In practice, most clubs include the Collect in their opening exercises, and out of respect members stand and remain standing for the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag. Other clubs recite the Collect at the end of their meetings.

Jennie is YOUR voice when you aren't sure who to ask. She's your voice in getting answers. She's your voice in helping you through the maze we all lovingly call Federation. Write her when you have questions, she has contacts to everyone through the Member at Large. She will get your answers, put your questions and answers (anonymously, of course) on this page because she knows if you asked, someone else has too and never spoke up. To chat with Jennie, send an email to [email protected]

It is time for the WRAP UP PARTY which this year was on a Tuesday May 24 at St. Benedict's Church 7801 NW 5th Street in Plantation. With Ellen was Judy McLeod (who graciously accepted the Cancer Raffle Cans, Judy already had the raffle tickets for next year) and Peggy Davis who plans on having a Plantation Woman's Team in 2017. They did announce at the May meeting that not all chairs will have to be present at all of the monthly meetings or team meetings which will make it easier on Judy and Peggy next year. 32 raffle baskets were presented by the 51 teams for 2016. There were white elephant gifts presented including Focus Hair Studio (located behind Publix) at 6914 Cypress Road and Duffys in Plantation which totaled $270. Raffle baskets plus the Plantation Woman's Club basket presented by Pat Hinde this year and team baskets from the Mardi Gras, a Beach and Exercise basket (donations of a Jump rope, two weights and a puzzle given by Ellen) brought the basket total to $1,338. A grand total of $1,608 was collected by volunteers from GFWC Plantation Woman's Club plus luminaria bags totaled about $290. Last year (2015), we had about 45 raffle baskets out of 51 teams and volunteers collected about $160 more in baskets and $115 more for luminaria bags. The Plantation Woman's Club still did great in 2016.

I hope you all enjoyed the May meeting as much as I did. Carmen Pino from Homeland Security gave us a very enlightening presentation on human trafficking.

He asked us to keep our eyes and ears open and report any suspicious activity that we see. Thanks to Anne Ebbert for the suggestion. The dump salad was a big hit - everyone seems to like a lunch salad and there was plenty to eat. The variety of "fixins" was amazing. Let's try it again!

This article is for those crafty people out there. After my Mother passed I was going through all of her jewelry and deciding what to do with all of it. Most of it was costume jewelry and not worth very much. So I brain-stormed and came up with the idea of using individual pieces of all her jewelry to make decorative Christmas ornaments. You can buy really nice decorative hooks and by mixing and matching created some really nice ornaments. I was able to give them away to family and my Mother’s friends. Some used them as key chains and others as Christmas tree ornaments. No matter what they used them for they kept my Mother’s memory alive! To this day some of her friends still have them!
