November Luncheon

Lieutenant Colonel Karl Tinson, Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Bangor, spoke at our November 14th luncheon. The Marine Corps celebrated their 242nd birthday on November 11th. The Marine Corps Battalion in Bangor is responsible for

security of forces and weapons on the Bangor Facility. As usual, his talk was informative and uplifting.

(Note, the editor is solely responsible for the slightly outsized Marine Corps flag in recognition and support of his

Grandson who graduated from Marine Corps Boot camp on December 1st.)

Steve Westover was born and raised in Bremerton, graduated from East Bremerton High School and went on to graduate from the University of Washington in Aeronautical Engineering. In 1971 Steve earned a commission as an Ensign through the NROTC program.

His first set of orders were to flight school in Pensacola, FL where while earning his Wings of Gold, he completed his Masters Degree in Aeronautical Systems from the University of West Florida. Steve completed tours as an instructor pilot with VT-4 in Pensacola followed by a tour in VAQ-33 based in Norfolk, VA flying the EA-4F Skyhawk. After this tour, Steve was ordered to NAS Whidbey Island where he transitioned to the EA-6B Prowler aircraft. He was recognized as the Replacement Pilot of the Year in 1980.

He completed squadron tours with VAQ-138, 137, 129, 140 and commanded VAQ-136 based in Atsugi, Japan. He has deployed aboard the aircraft carriers USS Ranger, USS John F. Kennedy, and the USS Midway. Following his flying tours, Steve attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and then completed a three year assignment with the Defense Information Systems Agency. A Pentagon tour followed with the Navy’s Test and Evaluation Directorate where he retired in 1996 as a Captain.

After his Navy retirement, Steve worked as a civilian providing support for the EA-6B program Office. In 1999, Steve changed careers and was hired by FedEx as a pilot. He flew the Boeing 727 as a Flight Engineer and the MD-11as a First Officer and a Captain, before retiring in 2014.

Steve is married to Connie Christman Westover and has two married sons, Michael and Matthew and three grandchildren.

Veteran's Day 2017

The Veterans Day event was an inspirational and respectful celebration of our Veterans. Fifteen World War Two veterans attended along with our Congressman, Derik Kilmer, The Bremerton Mayor, Patty Lent, Bremerton Mayor-elect Glenn Wheeler and a number of local dignitaries too long to list.

Col William Reeder, Jr. gave an account of his time as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam that was both graphic and uplifting. He and his daughter had copies of his book, "Through The Valley; My Captivity in Vietnam" available for sale. (I've not read mine yet. ed)

The Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of Navy League is proud to have provided both funding and leadership for this meaningful and memorable event. Special thanks go to Navy League members, John Gardner, the new Chairman of the event, and founding Committee members, Earle and Sandra Smith for their hard work throughout the year making certain this program was very special.

Vintage military uniforms and vehicles were on display. Our local Scorpion Battalion Navy Sea Cadets provided the color guard for the event.

40 other local organizations contributed as well, making it truly a community event. Crazy Eric’s provided free food and refreshments following the program. Hudson Auto Center provided the cake. Thanks also to the City of Bremerton, Kitsap Sun, Raytheon, Gordon Sound, and the County Commissioners for their great support of this event.

The event was covered by Seattle's Fox 13 and The Kitsap Sun. The Kitsap sun ran a feature article on the event. You can view it at http://www.kitsapsun.com/picture-gallery/news/2017/11/13/kitsap-county-veterans-day-ceremony/107665198/

Luncheons & Tours - The Who, What, Where, How

Thanks to Byron Faber for putting this together. Byron, among other things, schedules and organizes our tours. Luncheons (buffet) are at the Bangor Plaza on the 2nd Tuesday of every month and cost $15. The starting time is about 11:45, but it is nice to get there a half hour earlier so you can meet folks & talk a bit before the meeting starts. If you aren't retired military, you can get on base by calling 360-377-5699 and making your reservation for that month's event. You need to give them your legal name, date of birth & place of birth. This will get you through the gate. You drive ahead to the 3rd stoplight ( T junction) and turn left. At the 2nd stop light there is a double left turn lane. Turn left and then take either the 2nd or 3rd left which takes you to the Bangor Plaza. Go upstairs in that building & you will see a sign for the luncheon or if there is no sign, go straight ahead. Our Council's web page is HTTPS://bremolympicnlus.wordpress.com/ On that page, under EVENTS, you can see the list of activities & tours upcoming. I don't have much there right now, but will soon have arranged the tours for this next year. They will be posted as soon as I can get it all sorted out. In order to go on the tours, you'll need to let me know via email that you want to be included as soon as you can determine that you actually can & will attend. Then I'll send you whatever they tell me they need for security information. Each command does things a little differently. Don't worry if you lose this email, everything you need is on the web page. Tours I'm working on for 2018 include: USS Seawolf fast attack submarineUSS John C Stennis aircraft carrierTrident submarine & Trident Training facilityWill try to get a tour of SWFPAC (Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific)Coast Guard BangorKeyport baseSwift Boats manufacturingWhidbey Island Naval Air StationPerhaps VIGOR shipbuilding in SeattlePerhaps Indian Island Naval MagazinePerhaps Astoria Coast Guard sites & heavy weather training facilitiesPerhaps Seattle Coast Guard facilitiesPerhaps Port Angeles Coast Guard I hope you know that you are valued & included in the organization.
