We’re well into fall and also well into the swing of things at the youth and young adult of- fice. The next two months are very busy ones as we prepare for conven- tion and the election of a new executive. First of all, I would like to thank all those who attended our first meeting and kick-off lunch. We all had a great time and we had some good ideas for convention coming up. I would also like to thank those that came out to the Fr Semchuk Memorial Service on September 30th. I would also like to thank St Basil’s par- ish for hosting a very nice liturgy with yummy refreshments to follow after the service. Now moving on to this month’s events. On Wednesday, Octo- ber 7 th I will be co- presenting a talk on planning youth events on a shoestring budget at 7:00 pm at the Archdiocese of St. Boni- face Centre on Tache. If you are interested in planning youth events for your parish but do not have the resources, this work- shop will be for you! The follow- ing week, on October 15, our very own Fr. Richard Soo, SJ, will be speaking at Theology on Tap at Triple B’s on Scurfield and Route 90. He will be speak- ing on the topic of East and West in the Catholic Church: breathing with both lungs. Please be advised that only those 18 or older are admitted to this event and there is a cover charge (see ad inside the newsletter for details). The follow- ing day will be the be- ginning of our Conven- tion which runs from October 16-17 at the Victoria Inn on Wellington. For those of you not interested in at- tending the whole conference, the youth session on Satur- day the 17 th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm is free. Here we will con- duct an mini retreat and elect our new executive for the next two years. We would like at least two representatives from each parish, if possible, to attend. Hope to see you there! WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND...

One day a man saw a old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.' Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it

never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assis-tance they needed, and Bryan added, 'And think of me.' He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan . After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hun-dred dollar bill. The wait-ress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress won-dered where the lady could be. Then she noticed some-thing written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes

Page 2

What’s Up with Mfoejoh!B!Ifmqjoh!Iboe? when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.' Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her hus-band needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard.... She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, 'Everything' s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.' There is an old saying 'What goes around comes around.' Today after you read this story, and I'm asking you to share it. Let this light shine. Simply, pass this on to a friend. Good friends are like stars....You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. ~GOD BLESS!~ ~from a dear friend~

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS

Tired of people tell-ing you what you can and can’t eat? Disappointed that you have to stom-ach the same boring foods day in and day out? Waiting for the day when you can just order what-ever you want, whenever you want? Well, the wait is

over. In 2009, prepare to get served by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs -- a hilari-ous adventure of epic… portion sizes. In-spired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain! http://www.hollywoodjesus.com

Highly recommended!!! BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ!

HAVE A LITTLE FAITH

Albom’s first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie, Have A Little Faith begins with an unusual request: an 82-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asks him to de-liver his eulogy. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he’d left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor – a reformed drug dealer and convict – who preaches to the poor and home-less in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Moving between their worlds, Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do, Mitch ob-serves how these very different men employ faith similarly in fighting for survival: the older, suburban rabbi, embracing it as death approaches; the younger, inner-city pastor relying on it to keep himself and his church afloat. As America struggles with hard times and people turn more to their beliefs, Mitch and the two men of God explore is-sues that perplex modern man: how to endure when difficult things happen; what heaven is; intermarriage; forgiveness; doubting God; and the importance of faith in trying times. Although the texts, prayers and histories are different, Al-bom begins to realize a striking unity between the two worlds - and indeed, between beliefs everywhere. In the end, as the rabbi nears death and a harsh winter threatens the pastor’s wobbly church, Albom sadly fulfills the last request and writes the eulogy. And he finally under-stands what both men had been teaching all along: the pro-found comfort of believing in something bigger than your-self. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life’s purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark in-side us all. It is one man’s journey, but it is everyone’s story. “Once again, Mitch Albom has given us a heart-warming true story, about the power of love to triumph over death, and the power of faith to guide us through the worst adver-sity.” —Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

Paying Off God

Our 7-year-old daughter had just won $2.00 for her memory work in Sunday school. After the morning service, the pastor's wife congratulated her. Our daughter proudly announced, "And I put it all in the morning's offering!" "My, how wonderful!" the pastor's wife exclaimed. "I'm sure God will be pleased." "Yes," the child replied. "Now maybe God will let me do some of the things I want to do!"

No Thanks The first day of school, my son Tyler came home saying, "We can't use 'thank you' in the bathroom." "What do you mean?" I asked. He explained, "There's a sign on the bathroom door that says, 'Please do not use—thank you.'"

Poorly Placed Trust The story is told that a national magazine assigned a photogra-pher to take pictures of a forest fire. They told him a small plane would be waiting at the airport to fly him over the fire. The photographer arrived at the airstrip just an hour before sundown. Sure enough, a small Cessna airplane stood waiting. He jumped in with his equipment and shouted, "Let's go!" The pilot, a tense-looking man, turned the plane into the wind, and soon they were in the air, though flying erratically. "Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make sev-eral low-level passes." "Why?" asked the nervous pilot. "Because I'm going to take pictures!" yelled the photographer. "I'm a photographer, and photographers take pictures." The pilot replied, "You mean you're not the flight instructor?"

Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Nine Be at peace among yourselves... (1 Thessalonians 5:13) "None of us is alone in this world; each of us is a vital piece of the great mosaic of humanity as a whole." --Pope John Paul II, Israel/Palestine

Think About That In speaking to the young people in Israel and Palestine, John Paul II is addressing people who have been at war with one another for more than 2,000 years. The Holy Father believes that young people can be peacemakers. In fact, he believes that young people have a unique opportunity to be builders of peace in this world. We can change the way the rest of history will unfold by recognizing that we all need one another. We must live in peace. Take Action This week when you find yourself in an argument with someone else, stop and ask yourself, "What can I do in this situation to make peace between us?" Ask the person you are arguing with this simple question, "what can we do to make peace?" At Mass on Sunday, during the sign of peace, remember this situation and feel in your heart what real peace means. Say A Prayer Lord, help me to be a peacemaker with my friends and among my friends. Did You Know? If you were to total the miles the Holy Father has traveled outside of Rome it would be equivalent to traveling more than 27 times the earth's circumference or over 2.7 times the distance between the earth and moon.

Taken from...My Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. The Plimsol Line Source Unknown

Samuel Plimsoll was a member of the British Parlia-ment about a century ago. He was distressed because cargo ships were being loaded so heavily that they sank at sea, with much loss of life and property. So he got a law passed requiring danger lines to be painted on all cargo ships. When the weight of the cargo lowered the ship down to where the line touched the water, all loading had to stop. Seamen still call this mark the "Plimsoll line." People also have Plimsoll lines—a point where for the sake of health, happiness and plain common sense, we should not attempt to shoul-der more responsibility, how-ever important, than we can intelligently handle.

"People who admit they’re wrong get a lot farther than people who prove they’re right." Beryl Pfizer

"Three daily reminders: Have courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Have the courage to do the right thing be-cause it is right." Mark Twain

"Success is fulfillment—fulfillment in your per-sonal, family, career and spiritual lives. Success is the ability to love, enjoy your work, and have fun in your life. Success is making a difference—a positive difference. Success is making the world a little bit better because you existed. And success begins with a purpose." John Walker, INSIGHT, # 105, p. 30

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.

It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes

sense of our past, brings peace for today, and cre-ates a vision for tomorrow."

Melody Beattie

There is more Beyond Source Unknown Before Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain into the unknown, it was believed that the world ended not far beyond Gibralter. Indeed, this belief was expressed in the Spanish royal motto which read, "Ne Plus Ultra," meaning "There is no more beyond here." But when Columbus returned from the new World, he had actually discovered new ho-rizons. This made the royal motto meaningless, un-til Queen Isabella simply eliminated the first word. Thus the motto became, "Plus Ultra," meaning "There is plenty more beyond." We may think there are no more "new frontiers" left today. But one of the legacies left to us by Pres. John F. Kennedy is that he awakened us to the fact that "new frontiers" need not be geographical. They may be social, political or spiritual, wherever there is hatred, poverty, racism, indifference, despair or hopelessness. Yes, there is plenty more beyond!

Sergius & Bacchus the Great Martyrs of Syria Memorial 7 October Profile These holy Martyrs were Romans of high rank in the service of the Em-peror Maximian, to whom it was re-ported that they did not take part in the festivals of the idols. When he called them into his presence, they confessed their Faith in the one God. He had them arrayed in women's clothes and paraded through the streets in mockery. They were afterwards scourged, from which Saint Bacchus died. This was about the year 296. Saint Sergius was then taken to Resapha in Syria, where he was tortured and beheaded. His tomb in Resapha became a very fa-mous shrine, to which pilgrims came from as far away as West-ern Europe; Resapha was later renamed Sergiopolis in his honor Saint Sergius the Martyr Died beheaded c.303 at Resapha, Syria some relics in the church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in Rome, Italy Can-onized Pre-Congregation Patronage Syria Representation soldier with the palm of martyrdom with Saint Bacchus
