When Doug first mentioned to me he
needed a short biographical sketch, the
first thing that came to mind was “a
long, long, time ago, in a county far, far,
away I was born”. OK, probably too
much detail.
But as background I was born in north
Georgia and raised in east Tennessee.
My first experience as a photographer
was when I was about nine or ten and
received a plastic 126 film camera. And
then my mother gave me her old
brownie. I remember thinking it could-
n’t get any better. In high school I got
an old Argus C2 which I literally wore
out. Once I joined the work force I
finally got a camera that allowed me to
swap lenses, an old Petri. Then after
joining the Air Force I got an Olympus
OM2 and built a nice little system with
it which served me well until it was sto-
len. I then chose Canon as a replace-
ment system and have been very
pleased with it.
A lot of my photography centers on
travel. Both through my job and
through volunteer activities with my
church I have had wonderful travel op-
portunities. As of now I have been to
38 different countries, 40 states, 106 of
the 393 national parks and a number of
outstanding photo locations. But this
year I have decided to concentrate on
photography in Oklahoma. After a little
research I have been amazed at the
photography opportunities right here. Cont’d Page 3 . . .

Last year Tom did a wonderful job leading
the club in a hectic year that saw us host-
ing the Gulf States Council of Camera
Clubs annual convention and restarting the
Oklahoma PSA salon. I am sure that Tom
would agree with me in giving credit to the
members who volunteer to support club
activities. They are the difference between
success and failure. This next year we will
again be looking for volunteers to support
the salon and all club activities.
I am glad to report that the club enters the
next year in a sound financial position, bol-
stered by the additional revenues from the
salon and conference. Our treasurer, Brad
Smith, does a wonderful job as steward of
the coffers and our board is always careful
when it comes to spending. You can be
sure that Brad is currently willing, able and
ready to collect your 2011/2012 dues.
The goal of assigned competitions was to
encourage members to “get out” and
shoot more. Unfortunately the numbers
showed that assigned competitions had
lower level of participation than regular
competitions. So this year, to encourage
members to get out and shoot, we are
going to try something different, a yearlong
project that will culminate in a program.
The project we have chosen for this year
is Route 66 in Oklahoma. You will be
hearing more on the project later. In the
mean time you might start planning on
what you should shoot on “America’s
Mother Road”.
(This is a good assignment, take note. Ed.)

I look forward to the new club year,
continuing the successes of the past
and looking to the future. I am sure
that challenges will occur but with the
group of officers that I will be blessed
to work and the spirit of the member-
ship nothing will be insurmountable. I
and the other officers solicit any
suggestions to increase for you the
value of the club. Feel free to share
any suggestions with any officers, or
at a board meeting. The bottom line
is that this is your club and we are all
here to share with each other our
love of the photographic arts.
