Commander’s Team Report Cdr Abe Walston, P

Thanks to Lt/C Bob Smith, S and Lt Lia Spark, P for putting on an excellent wine tasting for our April meeting at the Watermark Marina. We had 63 members and two guests in attendance. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and excellent wines that were made available by Empire Distributions. In addition to the officer reports, nine new members were inducted into the Squadron bringing the yearly total to 34! This is a great

start! It is worth noting that we have recruited four new trial members through our new Try Six program.

A big thank you also goes to P/C Wilbur Chapman, SN and 1/Lt Morgan Chapman, JN for completing the annual inventory of the Squadron storage unit.

National Safe Boating Week

May is usually the beginning of the boating season and the month that we emphasize boating safety. Several activities and events are planned for National Safe Boating Week 20 to 26 May 2017. There will be Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron Proclamations read at the Wilmington City Council on 16 May 2017, Kure Beach Town Council on 16 May 2017, Carolina Beach Town Council on 9 May 2017, and Wrightsville Beach Town Council on 11 May 2017. Thanks to those who attended one or more of these town council meetings to show support for our safe boating initiatives. The Boat Show Team will have booths at three locations during May that provide an opportunity to educate the public about safe boating practices and recruit new members. Volunteers will be needed. Please consult the calendar for times and locations. WECT TV will conduct interviews with the Lt/C Ned Rhodes, SN and 1/Lt Meg Morrison, JN on boating education sometime during National Safe Boating Week. Always a part of National Safe Boating week is the “Wear It” campaign which emphasizes the importance of wearing a life jacket while on the water. Several studies have recently documented a dramatic drop in drowning fatalities when life jackets are worn.

Boating Safety Tip

Safe boating practices can be learned through the proper educational courses. However, safe boating behaviors are equally important for accident prevention and are more difficult to acquire. The top five behaviors contributing to recreational vessel accidents are as follows:

Use of alcohol while driving a boat Distracted operation Failure to follow navigational rules while meeting or crossing on the water Lack of boat handling experience Lack of attention to environmental risks while driving a boat

Each of these contributing factors can be successfully mitigated by careful attention to safe boating principles and by acquiring driving experience on the water. If you are not the operator, you can be vigilant looking for hazards and encouraging the driver to drive safely. Distraction while driving is difficult to manage as many things must be done at the same time, particularly, when boating in crowded or unfamiliar waterways. Boats steer quite differently than automobiles and the intuition gained by driving a car may not be appropriate for safe handling a boat in many situations. Avoidance of the behaviors listed above will make you a safer boat driver!

Squadron Events

Squadron activities are ramping up as warm weather has arrived. We have several cruises coming up beginning with the Manteo cruise from 8 to 18 May 2017 and the St. James Lunch cruise on 13 May 2017. Please consult the website calendar and sign up early as some cruises fill up quickly.

Future Squadron events to put on your calendar include the Past Commanders’ Shrimparoo at Ogden Park on 15 July 2017 and the District 27 (D27) Rendezvous at the Hilton Riverside in downtown Wilmington on Friday, 25 August and Saturday, 26 August 2017. The D27 Rendezvous will begin with a reception Friday night at the hospitality suite at the Hilton Riverside. The traditional Flag Raising Ceremony will be held at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning on the USS Battleship North Carolina and the remainder of the day will be free time. Saturday evening will feature a dinner cruise. More details will follow. Please plan to attend the D27 Rendezvous; it will be a fun weekend and will make the Squadron look good as we are hosting with the Charlotte Sail & Power Squadron.

The next Squadron meeting will be on the USS Battleship North Carolina on 22 May 2017 with barbeque and all the fixings. You do not want to miss this meeting!

Executive Officer’s Team Report

Lt/C Ed LoBalbo, SN

“Marketing who we are and what we do to the community at large”

Each year, the month of May focuses on National Safe Boating Week. This year it will be held 20-26 May 2017. Our Squadron will actively participate in several ways. We’ll staff friendly booths at marinas and provide lifesaving messages about responsible boating. We’ll also perform Vessel Safety Checks (VSCs) and stress the importance of boating education. Finally, we’ll provide proclamations to local municipalities about safe and responsible boating. National events during this week are “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day,” “Ready, Set,

Wear It!” and “Life Jacket World Record Day.”

To kick off the week, the Education department will present their flagship America’s Boating Course© (ABC) on Saturday 20 May followed by the accompanying On-the-Water segment on Sunday 21 May. What a perfect way to start the week. If you know someone who should take this course, please refer them to the website www.weteachboating.org.

Along with our friendly lifesaving messages, we’ll also be promoting vessel safety checks at marina booths on Saturday 13 May, Monday 22 May, and Friday 26 May. Lt Mike Cramer, S is aiding our efforts. To support our proclamations activity, we ’ll be asking for volunteers to attend our municipality proclamations at the Town of Carolina Beach (9 May), the Town of Wrightsville Beach (11 May), the Town of Kure Beach (16 May), Wilmington City (16 May), and Town of Surf City (24 May). Lt Peter Spark, P, Safety Officer, has been instrumental in this activity.

This year, our Public Relations team approached WECT TV to support our efforts by broadcasting several Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos and airing interviews on safe and responsible boating from our Squadron Commander, Safety Officer, and Education Officer. WECT’s management accepted and has assigned Ms. Molly Oak, General Assignment Reporter, to work with us.

The Public Relations team also secured an advertising spot on WECT’s “Business Break with Meghan Donohue” to promote our May 20 ABC© course. SEO Lt/C Ned Rhodes, N and 1/Lt Meg Morrison, JN will be interviewed by Ms. Donohue for two two-minute airings. This will represent a new venue to test how best to reach candidates for the flagship course. I’ll report the results in the next edition - fingers crossed for now.

Our VSC team has been busy. Lead by Co-Chairs P/Lt/C Tom Bello, AP and Lt Richard Pagan, S, VSC marina events were held on 15 April at Inlet Watch Yacht Club and 29 April at Bradley Creek Marina. In just these two days alone, 78 exams were completed. We are now approaching a count of 140 exams. At the marina events were P/C Mark Stacy, AP, P/D/C Jerry Hall, SN, Guido Cozzolino, AP, Ron Sulak, Bill Miller, S, and Ed Kruel, AP. Other notable completions were reported by Lt Rick Johnson, AP, P/C Nita Neumeister, AP, and P/C Ron Tilmon, SN. Please remember to have your boat inspected by one of the Squadron’s examiners. Email us at [email protected]. Congratulations to all.

We are continuing Social Media evaluation aimed at maximizing our effectiveness. Chairperson, Lt Jean Stacy, S, supported by her husband P/C Stacy are leading these efforts. They have identified promising sources of help from the United States Power Squadrons® national headquarters and a possible third party consultant. At the minimum, all members can help by logging onto Facebook and “like” and “follow” our Squadron’s Facebook page. The more the better!

From the water or near the shoreline...

Safety Officer Lt Peter Spark, P

Some of you may have read the article about Captain Lee Tippett. His bravery likely saved lives but certainly saved

considerable damage to property. For those of you not familiar with the story, Captain Tippett was coming back from

fishing when he spotted a boat on fire about half mile away at the Solomons Yacht Club fuel dock. He quickly went to

the boat on fire and towed it almost two miles into deeper water where it could burn in relative safety until the fire

department could put out the flames.

The burning boat was a 21 foot powerboat. The explosion occurred after refueling when restarting the engine. While an investigation

into the cause is ongoing, and further details aren’t known at this point, I wanted to remind you all about using your blowers. Blowers

certainly help to remove the vapors that settle low down in the bilge but aren’t the only precaution you should take. They can fail or

become blocked. Always perform a sniff test as well. It might save you and others.

You can watch the video here https://youtu.be/SwCRj7CA1C8

As always, I wish you happy and safe boating

Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C Bob Smith, S

Boating Activities: Boating Activities Chair Lt Janet Anderson, S reports that the cruise schedule is evolving. We had a change in the Blessing of the Fleet due to a conflict at Seapath Yacht Club. The date was moved back one week to 29 April. We had seven boats for the blessing and raft up.

In the month of May, there are two on-the-water events. On13 May, Lt. Leo Spencer, P and Lt. Lori Spencer, P planned a day cruise to St James Plantation Marina for a leisurely lunch. Unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to weather and will be rescheduled. This was a very popular event last year and should be great. This is also a nice

event for the land cruisers to join in. Currently, five boats are registered to make the cruise.

On 8 May, a ten day cruise to Manteo and back began. Originally, the plan was a longer trip into the Chesapeake Bay, but we hope this shorter trip will work better for more boaters. The cruise goes from the 8th until the 18th, with stops in Beaufort, River Dunes, Manteo, Ocracoke, and Morehead City. .

Meetings & Programs: Those of us who attended the 24 April Wine Tasting enjoyed the wines and information presented by Sean Myers of Empire Distributions. Several of those in attendance won door prizes of glassware from Williams Sonoma or bottles of wines donated by Mr. Myers.

Meetings & Programs Chair Lt Lia Spark, P has planned the 22 May BBQ on the fantail of the USS Battleship North Carolina. The event will be catered by Mission BBQ. This BBQ event will cost $25.00 per person to cover the costs of catering, servers, and the use of the Battleship. This fee includes access to the ship which normally costs $14.00 per person. Lt Spark needs a headcount to finalize the catering order., Please sign up by Monday,15 May at the link provided in the email announcement or at the Events page of the Squadron website.

In June, we are back at Bluewater Grill where Cdr Abe Walston, P has arranged for Steve Pfaff from the local office of the National Weather Service to speak to us about the danger of rip currents.

P/C Rich Barnet, SN and his team of fellow Past Commanders are preparing for their annual Shrimparoo on 15 July in Ogden Park.

Membership: So far, this year, Membership Chair Lt Linda LeBer, S has welcomed 34 new members. Nine new members were sworn in at the 24 April Squadron Meeting: Peter Cox and Diane Zaryki, Dick Lacy and Jan Crisp-Lacy, Tom Pechar and Ann Revell-Pechar, Kevin Gallagher and Julie Schoerke, and Cindy Jones (see photo below) Lt LeBer is anticipating another group of new trial

members from the May ABC class, not to mention the Try-Six members who are being recruited by the VSE inspectors. Therefore, we need more members to step up and be new member sponsors. Please contact Lt LeBer if you would be willing to email or call a new member and encourage participation in events and to answer any questions.

Kudos to P/C Nita Neumeister, AP, for hosting a very nice reception for new squadron members at her nearby home just prior to the 27 March Squadron meeting at Bluewater Grill. This is the sort of event we would like to do more often to better encourage new members, especially ABC Trial and Try-Six members, to get more involved with the Squadron.

A more formal New Member Reception & Orientation was held Thursday,13 April at Seapath Yacht Club. After a period of mingling with other new members and their sponsors, Cdr Abe Walston, P presented some background on the Squadron and the Bridge Officers described their roles.

Member Involvement: If you have not already responded to this year’s online Membership Survey, please do so soon. Membership Involvement Chair Lt Paul Tyndall, P and his co-authors Cdr Walston, P and Lt/C Ed LoBalbo, SN are still collecting responses. The Executive Committee needs this feedback so that the Squadron can better meet your needs and desires. It is a short and simple survey that only takes a few minutes to complete.

Finally, we are still accepting recipes for the Squadron’s online cookbook. We want the recipes for the soups, breads and desserts featured at February’s Cook Off.

Education Officer’s Report L/C Ned W. Rhodes, SN

By the time you read this, 13 souls will have passed the exam for the Electronic Navigation class held at Cape Fear Community College. Four different instructors took the stage to teach all about the GPS, vector and raster charts, waypoints, and routes. We will finish off the class with a teaching cruise which will bring it all together. As a result of passing this class, two students have now obtained the grade of Senior Navigator. Lt David Munnikhuysen, SN and Lt/C Ned Rhodes, SN are to be congratulated along with P/Lt/C Ted Poucher, SN

and P/C Woody Williams, SN who were awarded Senior Navigator status earlier this year. The Squadron is proud to have 18 Senior Navigators as members. Registration for Advanced Piloting is now closed, and we have two enthusiastic students enrolled for that class. The Seamanship class planning is firming up for a June start, and we are still working on the logistics for a Sail class for the summer. And don’t forget our next ABC class is scheduled for 20 May at Cape Fear Community College. We have 38 students registered to

date. You can sign up at http://weteachboating.org.

Congratulations to Lt Peter Spark, P who is our newest graduate of the Instructor Development class. He will join the instructor ranks

in time to teach his first class for the May ABC class.

Cape Fear Community College Fund Raising Effort Lt/C Ned W. Rhodes, SN

Thanks to the generous donation of 50/50 winnings from Lt/C Bob Smith, S at the April membership meeting and donations from the Lancaster, Morrison, and Walston families, we are halfway to our goal of $1500.00 to be donated to the Marine Science program at Cape Fear Community College (CFCC). Our donation last year helped two students to concentrate on their studies and stay with the program. All our education classes are held downtown in CFCC’s state of the art classrooms, and we are happy to have them as a partner in our education effort. Please consider making a donation to our fundraising effort. Checks in any amount can be sent to me (payable to Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron) at 6013 Motts Village Road, Wilmington, NC 28412 or you may donate on line through PayPal with a credit card at the link below: https://form.jotformpro.com/71067090674963. We will be running this campaign through the end of May.

It only takes One Storm to Change your Life and Community

Lt/C Rick Sorrenti, AP Tropical storms and hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena.

Living in the Wilmington area brings an added risk to life and property so you need to be prepared. Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds, and tornadoes from these storms. The National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center issue watches, warnings, forecasts,

and analyses of hazardous tropical weather.

Hurricane Preparedness Week (7-13 May 2017) is your time to prepare for a potential landfalling tropical storm or hurricane. Test Your Mustang Life Jacket

Stf/C Allan. B. Furtado, SN - National Safety Committee

We are always told as a Vessel Examiner to wear our life jackets to project the idea of safety to the boating public. I am sure that

most VEs have done so over the past 8 years that we have had them.

Now, as we head into the boating season and all of the associated activities, I would suggest that the first thing a VE should do is

examine and test his/her Mustang Inflatable life jacket. It is suggested that this operation be performed every two to three months.

I bet you have not even done it once in the eight years you have had the jackets. I am suggesting this exercise because we have

found a few jackets that won't hold air. If one of these is found, I suggest that it be destroyed and disposed of because the total life

expectancy is only 10 years.

So how do we test our jacket? Open it up along the Velcro seams as shown in Figure 1 until it looks like figure 2. Then remove

the cap on the oral inflation tube (shown in figure 2) and inflate the Life Jacket orally.

Figure 1 Figure 2

Then keep the jacket inflated over night. If it fails to hold air all night it is defective. If it holds air ok, then reverse the oral inflation

cap and compress the jacket to remove all of the air. Once deflated, replace the cap to its original position and fold the sides back

and press the Velcro seams to hold the jacket together.

Now if you happen to really need the jacket while doing a VSC, (Heaven forbid you fall into the water) the life jacket would be

known to be useable.

Sunshine Committee

Lt Jan Hilbert

Get well cards were sent to members Sue VanNote and Jim Boyd. Both folks had emergencies that necessitated a stay at New Hanover Hospital. They are home now, and we send our best wishes and hopes that they are doing their best to recover quickly.

A Thinking of You card was sent to Henry and Monica Lovell who were prevented from attending our last meeting along with the wine tasting event. Both were dealing with separate health issues that prevented their presence. Warm wishes and best regards are sent from all for their speedy return to good health.

If you know of anyone in need of a card, please phone me at 910-350-0902 or email [email protected], and I will send a thoughtful message to them from our group.

Book Club #1 Lt Sara Raleigh

Shirley Ball hosted the April book club selection of Mercer Girls by Libbie Hawker.

It’s 1864 in downtrodden Lowell, Massachusetts. The Civil War has taken its toll on the town, leaving the economy in ruin and its women in dire straits. That is, until Asa Mercer arrives on a peculiar, but providential, errand: he seeks high-minded women who can exert an elevating influence in Seattle, where there are ten men for every woman. Mail-order brides, yes, but of a certain caliber.Schoolmarm Josephine, tough as nails Dovey, and pious over-the-top perfectionist Sophronia see their chance to exchange their bleak prospects for new lives. But, the very troubles that sent them running from Lowell follow them to the muddy streets of Seattle and the friendships forged on the cross-country trek are tested at every turn. Just when the journey seems to lead only to ruin, an encounter with a famous suffragist becomes their salvation. But to survive both an untamed new landscape and their pasts, they needed all their strength and one another.

Group consensus was that it was a very interesting historical novel that highlighted the economic and social impact of the Civil War on the north and, especially, the women left behind in the conflict. Shirley Ball, Marilyn Freeman, Keena Newland, Genie Lancaster, Beverly Smith, and Sara Raleigh were in attendance. Following the discussion, Shirley served a bountiful feast of earthly delights both sweet and savory, followed by a tour of all her beautiful and creative outdoor garden themed rooms.

Thank you, Shirley, for a delightful afternoon.

The May meeting is cancelled.

Francine Hall is hosting the 20 June discussion of The Expected One by Kathleen McGowan.

United States Power Squadrons® Pledge

“I do solemnly pledge to: abide by the bylaws of the United States Power Squadrons®; promote high standards of navigation and seamanship; maintain my boat and operate it legally; render assistance whenever possible; and, conduct myself in a manner that will

add prestige, honor, and respect to the United States Power Squadrons®.”

Blessing of the Fleet Lt Lia Spark, P

On Saturday, 22 April, we had scheduled the Blessing of the Fleet.

Everything was planned in meticulous detail. We were ready to send out to

all participants the parade order and raft up guidelines. We found out that

on the same day and place, the Annual Carolina Cup SUP Race was

happening. Those perfect plans went out of the window, and we

rescheduled for 29 April.

The 2017 Blessing of the Fleet went ahead on 29 April. We all gathered at

the entrance to Motts Channel awaiting the start of the parade and

blessing. Everything was again planned to perfection but Lt John Kelly, JN

had to change the parade order because of people dropping out.

Once the final list of attendees was determined and the order confirmed,

the parade started. We, in turn, headed to Seapath Yacht Club where we

cruised by the refueling dock. All boats announced themselves and their

crew on approach and, as with last year, we had our very own Squadron

member, Pastor Lt Paul Tyndall, P bless the boats as we passed on by. In

addition to those present, there was a blessing by proxy for some who

were unable to attend.

Immediately after the blessing, we collected Pastor Lt Tyndall and

returned to Banks Channel for a raft up. Sea Duck Too and Impulse both

set anchors, rafting up together and accepting and assisting the remaining

boats until we had seven boats rafting together. Out came al the food and

drink as we gathered on Sea Duck Too and Impulse, celebrating friendship and fun..

South Harbour Cruise and Golf Golf Director Steve Worcester, AP

• Show time at the course is 10 June at 11:30 a.m. For those who are traveling to the event by car, please swing by the marina to provide transportation to the course for those who came by boat.

• Tee off will be at 12:00 noon.

• We will have a shotgun start. This means that everyone starts at the same time but on a different hole.

• Cost to play is $25.00 per player.

• Remember that players may only carry three clubs of their choice and a putter.

• Play should be completed approximately 3:00 p.m. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded approximately 4:00 p.m. This will occur at the SHV marina docks. Everyone is invited to attend the awards and accompanying docktails.
