Shores Girls Are Volleyball National Champions!Three proud Miami Shores parents share a

special bond: their daughters are members

of a team that won the Junior National

Championships held in Dallas, TX.

Sydney Bent, Danielle Franzosa and

Julia Ortiz play for club team Tribe 13

Rox, and achieved amazing results. For a

team playing together for only six months,

Tribe 13 Rox accomplished not only being

ranked the #1 Florida club team in their

age division, but came in 2nd place at

Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Nationals in Orlando and Champions at the Junior

National Championships (JNC), both making history for the club in dramatic fashion.

At the end of a dominating regular season, undefeated in every one of the Florida

tournaments they played in, all that was left were the two biggest tests in club volleyball:

AAU and JNC. At each tournament, Tribe 13 Rox, came in Nationally Ranked and one of

the favorites to win it all. They did not disappoint.

In Orlando’s Disney Wide World of Sports, Tribe 13 Rox dominated the competition

early and often going undefeated in 3 days of pool play culminating in exciting wins on

elimination day against Volley Top of Puerto Rico and Madfrog’s from Texas. Reaching

the Finals was the goal and they faced their in-state rival Orlando Volleyball Academy

(OVA). On the stadium court in front of a large and boisterous crowd, not to mention a

live feed on ESPN3, the Tribe team took the first set from OVA 25-21. In the 2nd set, all

looked promising as Tribe had OVA in a desperate 22-18 hole before OVA reeled off the

near-impossible win 25-22. After a deflating loss, the Tribe girls fought hard in the 3rd and

deciding set only to lose 15-13 and come in 2nd place. After 2 earlier losses to Tribe during

the season, OVA proved a worthy challenger.

A week after AAU, Tribe sought redemption in Dallas at the Junior National

Championships hosted by USA Volleyball. As one of 48 nationally ranked teams, Tribe

claimed an invitation to the 75th Anniversary of this tournament by winning a regional bid

in Washington DC earlier in the season. As the competition started, Tribe fought through

two early defeats by winning a tough crossover match on the 3rd day to advance to the

gold bracket on the last day. Beginning with a tough 3-set win over a very tough Aspire

team from Arizona, Tribe moved on to meet one of the teams they lost to earlier in the

tournament: ASICS Mavs from Kansas City. The girls were unfazed by the earlier loss, as

they dominated the Mavs in two sets, 25-18 and 25-17. The win was sweet as the girls waited

to see who their opponent would be. As fate would have it, it was none other than rival

OVA, for all the marbles! But this time the result would be different.

The two rivals, in the stadium court in front of a large crowd and streaming live on

usavolleyball.org, began another impossibly stressful, 3-set classic. The first a heart

pounding win by Tribe, 25-23. The 2nd, another tantalizingly close-almost-won-again-but-

lost thriller, 27-25 win by OVA. Tribe let this one slip away after losing 4 match points. The

last set was a back and forth cliff hanger with superb play by both teams, but at the end the

Tribe girls pulled off a giant win, 15-11, to take home the title of National Champions!

A special congratulations goes to Coach Albert Sturgeon, a leader and motivator of special

young ladies. The Chamber of Commerce salutes the girls on their accomplishment.

The Greater Miami Shores Egret is the official publication of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce. It is published monthly and is distributed to the 5,400 homes, apartments, and businesses within the villages of Miami Shores and Biscayne Park free of charge. Advertising is limited to organizations that are members of the Chamber. Information in it is intended for Chamber member organizations as well as the residents of our communities. Please contact the Chamber for more information on membership, advertising, distribution, or content.

This magazine printed with the environment in mind. Whenever possible, soy-based inks and pre- and post-consumer recycled paper are used in the printing process. Additionally, paper waste from the printing process is recycled. Please recycle this magazine when you’re done with it.

Summertime and the Living is Easy …Welcome to our August issue, in which we are

excited to crown our “Best of the Shores” winners!

Please take a moment to thank all of the local

businesses and institutions who participated, and remember to patronize our

local establishments — they are our friends and neighbors and are here to serve

you!

August is my favorite month (and not just because of my middle name). This

is a month so special the Roman Senate had to steal a day from February just to

keep it going! Whether you are enjoying the last lazy days of summer or getting

ready for a big bright fall, August has a little bit of everything. This is a good

time to complete all the activities you did not get around to doing earlier, like

cycling to our new local bike shop, Bike Nerds, and then heading to the Aquatic

Center for a cool dip and our unique “dive-in” theater. Might as well pick up a

gourmet sausage on your way!

At the Chamber we continue to look forward, particularly to our exciting

Saturday, October 26th “Green Day” street fair. Susan Ackley and David Hunter

are leading this effort on behalf of the Chamber, attracting new sponsors and

vendors and creating something very special, and we are grateful to them for

the time and energy they have donated to this project and to our community.

Stay tuned for more details as this community event continues to gather

(solar-powered) steam.

On behalf of all of us at the Chamber we thank you for your continuing support

of our members and wish you a peaceful, memorable summer.

This upcoming school year, The cushman school will be opening its new STEAM lab. In this state-of-the-art building, students will have hands-on usage of innovative equipment and software in a combined learning environment that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. Many classes will begin doing projects in the STEAM lab similar to the apprenticeships of a bygone era when “learning through doing” was of such benefit. The free flowing workspace is designed to encourage flexibility of thought and creativity. Students will be actively engaged in problem solving, collaboration, and the results of their efforts to make their lessons more relevant than they would be from a textbook alone. The STEAM initiative is an example of how Cushman works to effectively prepare its students to be future leaders in the respective STEAM fields. For additional information, please visit www.cushmanschool.org/ our-program/steam-initiative.

Pet Tips That WorkJanet Goodman, Dog TrainerGood Dog Bad Dog www.gooddogbaddogmiami.com

People are educated today about the dangers of sun exposure. Lots of shade, protective clothing and sunscreen have become healthy habits for those with active outdoor lifestyles. Our pets have joined us in our activities in the park, at the beach and around the neighborhood, but their skin protection has lagged behind, lingering in the last century.

Certain parts of a pet’s body are at risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Hairless areas, such as the belly, groin and nose are vulnerable. Ear tips are sensitive to harmful UV rays, and pink-skinned or light-colored breeds need extra protection. Summer close-shaves have become popular, especially in Florida, but that exposed skin should be given a dose of sun block when outside.

SPF hasn’t been rated for animals, and some chemicals in human-grade sunscreen – like zinc oxide – are very toxic if licked. Pet safe products are readily available now, but cat owners must be more careful. Consult with your vet for a cat-safe sun block before you purchase.

WHAT IS EVIDENCE-BASED CHIROPRACTIC?By: Lionel Leger, DC, LAT, CSCS

209 NE 95th St, Ste 4Miami Shores305.756.3940

Most major health insurances accepted

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) wasfirst described in 1996 by Clinical Epidemi-ologist, Dr. David Sackett, as “the conscien-tious, explicit and judicious use of current bestevidence in making decisions about the careof individual patients." A more in-depth definition of EBM states that it is "the use ofmathematical estimates of the risk of benefitand harm, derived from high-quality researchon population samples, to inform clinical decision-making in the diagnosis, investiga-tion or management of individual patients.”While EBM was originally brought on so thattraditional medicine can improve upon its delivery of care, evidence-based practice is notlimited to the allopathic practice.

Chiropractic is one of these disciplineswhich have dedicated a lot of time to research, and many Chiropractic colleges have a separate research department. One might askwhy research is needed for Chiropractic? While many patients today seek Chiropracticcare for pain relief because of the somatic effect, the founding fathers of Chiropracticdiscovered early on that a Chiropractic adjust-ment had more than just a mechanical effecton the spine. It also created a visceral effect fora lot of patients, which was hard to explain.Because of the effort of today’s research, more

Chiropractors are now able to explain to theirpatients some of the more subtle effects oftheir treatment.

As an example, Chiropractic research hasfocused on the effects of a Chiropractic adjust-ment on the Autonomic Nervous System(ANS) as many of the inherent bodily func-tions lie in this system. Several studies haveshown that heart rate and blood pressure havebeen directly affected following a Chiropracticadjustment to a specific spinal level. What isthe relationship between the spine and the Au-tonomic Nervous System and why are Chiro-practors interested in the outcomes? eanswer to this question requires another dis-cussion altogether but the short answer is thatthe two subdivisions of the ANS, the Sympa-thetic Nervous System (“rest and digest” system) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (“flight or fight” system) haveneurons (nerve cells) that begin in the spine, near the base of the skull, in the Cranium andin the Sacrum. While it is fairly easy to meas-ure differences in heart rate and blood pressurepre and post treatment, to measure the effectof a chiropractic adjustment on other intrinsicbodily functions, is practically impossible. e reason that these studies focused on thesetwo measurable outcomes was not necessarilywith the intention to treat or alter these func-tions but more to demonstrate that a spinaladjustment does also affect a visceral function.

As more studies are conducted withmeasurable outcomes on larger sample groups, additional conclusions will be drawn and advancements will take place. Until then, should you be more interested in readingabout Chiropractic research, please visit mywebsite where I have posted a few links.

Each month, we feature a question or a photograph here from our archives. The Miami Shores Country Club donates a $25 gift certificate to a randomly drawn person supplying the correct response.

Last month we ran a great old photo of prospective homebuyers in the very first days of Biscayne Park aboard a developer’s bus. We asked for both the year that Biscayne Park was founded and the name of its main governmental building. Our randomly drawn winner from amongst those who had both answers correct is arli cochrac of NE 115th Street in Biscayne Park. Congratulations Arli! August is the perfect time for a leisurely lunch at the Country Club- cold crisp salads, a cool drink, and stunning views!

Miami Shores History Corner ?

AuGuST’S QuESTION:Although Miami Shores and Biscayne Park residents have a wealth of options for schools for our children, including our Village owned Doctors Charter School, the official high school for Miami Shores is Miami Edison Senior High School. Edison High traces its roots to a palmetto-thatched hut “infested by spiders, beetles, ten students and one teacher” that opened in 1895. Shortly thereafter a real building was erected, which lasted until it was destroyed by a storm in 1915. The current home of Edison looks newer, but was actually constructed in 1928 for nine hundred students, about the capacity of the high school today. Here’s our question: What was the name of the longest serving Principal of Edison? He served in that capacity for twenty seven years!
