STL IIA Members –

It is hard to believe that this Chapter Year is coming to an end, with that, my term as your President is also concluding and I am grateful for the opportunity. It has been a great privilege to serve you as President this past year. It has been great working with all the volunteers within this organization and meeting so many wonderful leaders in the St. Louis community. As we transition into a new chapter year, I ask that you give back by volunteering within the IIA, please email me if you are interested in getting involved!

May is International Internal Audit Awareness Month. During this month, we’re encouraged to actively promote internal auditing’s value within our organizations, within our networks, and within our communities.

President’s Message I would encourage everyone to help raise awareness and showcase the Internal Audit profession to our audit customers, executive management, board members, students, and others in our families and communities. Having these conversations will allow you to learn and help collaborate on their challenges and problems to ultimately bring value to them. This could be helping them to reconcile a balance sheet account, making a departmental process more efficient, setting up a Roth IRA account, or even helping a colleague’s child with a math problem. Make the most out of these conversations while simultaneously educating others on what Internal Audit is and is not.

Finally, I encourage all of you to sign up for our last meeting and 70th Anniversary celebration

April Meeting & Seminar Recap

The April meeting and seminar was extremely engaging and informative! The day kicked off with our April chapter meeting and a presentation from an agent in the FBI’s Cyber Task Force who shared with the audience the current cyber threats and provided insights on implementing controls to mitigate the cyber threats. He highlighted the different governmental agencies who work together on cybersecurity and the information sharing between the FBI and private sector. After discussion the increasing trend of ransomware and phishing attacks, the audience was encouraged to contact the FBI and report the activities if they believe they were victims of attacks.

Rob Rudloff, Rubin Brown, then provided an overview of the Center for Internet Security (CIS) top 20 critical security controls for effective cyber defense. Rob provided insights on the top five critical security controls and discussed ways to implement the controls, as well as audit, the control effectiveness. Various frameworks available to IT professionals were highlighted, including NIST 800-53, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO 27001, ISO 27002, PCI DDS, HIPAA and COBIT 5.

We wrapped the day with a presentation from Protiviti, that focused on the current cyber-attacks against individuals and companies. Several case studies of recent breaches were discussed, and discussion ensued about where the control lapses were that allowed for breaches to occur.

Participants agree, the seminar was great, but left us all a little worried about the security of our personal information!

Volunteer for our IIA Chapter 2016-2017!

That’s where YOU come in! Volunteers (YOU, yes YOU!) are needed to help make the next chapter year a success. Why donate your time, you might ask? Because volunteering with the IIA is a great way to network and meet others within the profession, and it’s also a reflection of your commitment to helping keep the profession great. It’s an excellent experience and also enables you to develop new skill sets you may not have considered before. There are many different positions with many different needs- we welcome any and all skill sets.

If you’re interested in learning more about this great opportunity, please reach out to Brian Dobrynski at [email protected], we will be having a volunteers meeting on June 16th @ Llywelyn’s Pub in the Central West End starting at 4:30pm.

Thank you for the part you have played in making the St. Louis IIA Chapter successful!

Greetings St. Louis IIA Chapter Members!

As you may or may not know, the entire St. Louis Chapter is organized and operated by local volunteers within our profession. Now is an opportunity for you to serve and give back. As the 2015-16 chapter year comes to a close, work has begun in the planning of the upcoming 2016-17 chapter year.

Social Media Update

The social media committee would like to thank everyone who has been active on our Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram pages. We really enjoyed the responses to the challenge questions

and interaction among the members. Crystal Crane, one of our very active participants is April’s

challenge winner! Crystal shared two personal security tips; she keeps a spreadsheet of all account balances and uses Credit Karma to

proactively monitor changes to her credit.

As our chapter year wraps up, we would like you all to reflect back and share an IIA memorable

moment. This may include a meeting you really enjoyed, a specific topic, a valuable conversation, or anything of value you have received from your

participation with the IIA. Share using #IIAMoments and you may be May’s recipient of

Platinum Pursuit

As of April 25th

we have an estimated

1,497 CAP points!

Check out our “Quest for Platinum”

status every month!

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) CAP is the acronym for Chapter Achievement Program. The program has been established on the premise that the basic mission of the chapter is to serve its members first and then the internal audit profession. The program, sponsored by the International IIA, encourages local chapters to be active both for the benefit of the chapter members and of the local community. Local chapters earn credits for the CAP through in the following categories: a) service to members; b) service to the profession, and c) chapter administration. The Chapter Achievement Program is made up of three performance levels: bronze (685 credits), silver (1,060 credits), and gold (1,560 credits). Thanks to your efforts, our chapter has attained gold status every year since 1997. After ten consecutive years of achieving gold, a chapter achieves Platinum level which this chapter has earned since 2006. So what can a member do to earn CAP points for the chapter? Examples, include:

Attend the monthly chapter meetings; Attend chapter sponsored seminars; Utilize the chapter sponsored Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) review course; Earn an IIA certification; Develop questions for the CIA exam; Recruit new members; Present speeches or training sessions; Write internal audit-related articles for publication; Provide an internal audit internship at your company for a student; and Come up with an innovative way to promote the chapter

So, it's easy to contribute and it doesn't take too much of an effort. You can report CAP activity on the chapter website or directly to the CAP Chairperson Brent Statler at [email protected].

IIA’s Quality Assurance Review Committee As a reminder from the August Newsletter, if you feel your IA shop can benefit from a ‘fresh set of eyes,’ contact me at: David L. Richert, Jr. CPA, CIA Stifel Internal Audit Director One Financial Plaza | 501 N. Broadway St. Louis, MO 63102 314 342 3831 E-mail: [email protected]

Internal Audit (IA) performs as the eyes and ears of management, providing compliance, risk, assurance and operational coverage of the enterprise. But who audits the auditors? Why would auditors want to be audited? The consistent application of the principles of the IIA’s Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) is a goal for each IA shop. Converting this goal into practice and affirming the success of the QAIP can be realized by an independent assessment performed by a ‘fresh set of eyes’- experienced professionals who offer independent, objective evaluation services to an IA shop. Also, if you would like to become that ‘fresh set of eyes,’ volunteer. And lastly, these assessments earn CAP points for our Chapter!
