The start of the SGS year is a busy time for the society. Daniel Sevier and the golf tournament committee have been working for several months to prepare for the SGS-ALTAPL
Dan Scurlock
Golf Tournament September 9. I’m sure it will be sold out again as it has been in the past. The Red River Revel Mock Dig will occur the first week of October (1st thru the 8th) and many volunteers will be needed. Mark your calendars to participate in this event.
I would like to thank all those that have agreed to chair or work on a committee for the Geological Society for the coming year. It is a commitment of time that the society greatly appreciates and is necessary for the society to be successful.
Morris Nichols has been hard at work lining up speakers for the year. His first speaker is Dr. Morgan Brown. Dr. Brown is the CEO of Wave Imaging Technology, Inc. His talk is on onshore US imaging and velocity model building. We look forward to a good talk and a big turnout. Please get your reservations in early so the Petroleum Club can have an accurate count for seating.
Go to the new SGS website at www.SGS1.org any chance you get. Kevin and Rachel Hill have done a great job of building and maintaining the website. Rachel updates the information on the website regularly.
The 61st annual GCAGS Convention will be in Veracruz, Mexico this October 16-19, 2011. If anyone from our society is planning on attending and will represent the SGS, please contact me at [email protected].
Last April, Dr. Virginia Burkett talked on climate trends in the southeastern United States. She pointed out that models indicate that warming will intensify during the next 20 years and the frequency and duration of droughts will increase. I don’t know about the next nineteen years, but it sure felt like warming intensified this year. I’m not smart enough to know what the cause of it is but it sure felt and seemed like the hottest and driest summer I can remember.
In closing, I would like to thank last year’s outgoing board members, Kevin Hill, Glen Kelly and Jim Ross for the good job they did over the past three years. Hopefully this year’s board will continue and build on the work they did. On a sad note, we extend our condolences to the family of Jim Harris. Jim was an Honorary member of the SGS and will be missed by all. Dan Scurlock

Dr. Morgan Brown
a Ph.D. in geophysics from Stanford University. He has 15 years of experience in depth imaging.
He has given this talk at the 2011 AAPG and similar talks at geophysical societies around the country. He presents onshore case studies that show that PSDM technologies like RTM are not just for subsalt plays, but can add value for a variety of onshore plays, including those that are seemingly quite simple.
Abstract
“Onshore US Depth Imaging & Velocity Model Building”
Depth imaging (PSDM) can greatly improve deep reservoir delineation in any onshore basin where velocity variations cause seismic waves to refract and focus in a complex manner. However, the most advanced wave equation PSDM technologies available today, such as Reverse-Time depth Migration (RTM), are primarily utilized for offshore applications like sub-salt imaging.
In this talk, we demonstrate on several onshore US field data examples how PSDM can unmask and correctly position obscured or distorted horizons and faults, reducing exploration risk, and uncovering new prospects in legacy data. We also demonstrate application of cutting-edge PSDM "true angle" attributes for direct hydrocarbon detection and fracture analysis.
BiographyMorgan Brown is CEO of Wave Imaging Technology Inc., a specialty seismic processing company leading the onshore depth imaging trend. Brown worked in Geophysical R&D positions for Hess and 3DGeo before joining WIT. He holds a B.A. in applied math from Rice University and
