1968– 49th Anniversary Year– 2017
Well members, I left off last time with a hope of
good weather for the Feast and it came true as it
was a very successful 5 days (without any rain!).
Thanks again to all who volunteered.
October is our Culture and Heritage month and
there’s a lot to do. Be active as there are many
events going on. However, a very special focus
must be placed on one man – whether he is called
Cristoforo Colombo, Cristobal Colon or in
English, Christopher Columbus, we must all come
together to keep his importance relevant to so
many in the Western Hemisphere and abroad. And
to Italian Americans the ‘Admiral of the Ocean’ is
an important symbol as he was embraced by the
persecuted Italian immigrants. I emailed last month
a 2005 OSIA Fact vs. Fiction about Columbus to
arm you with truths. I strongly urge you to come
to one or both of our Columbus Day parades on
October 8 (Huntington) and October 9
(Manhattan).
Columbus, who in ‘1492 sailed the ocean blue’
was born in 1451 in Genoa Italy to Domenica
Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa and he was
married to Filipa Moniz Perestrelo in 1479. He had
two children: Diego and Ferdinand. We all learned
his boats were the Santa Maria, Pinta and Nina.
Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain in 1506.
The final leg of the Discoverers’ Monument
refurbishing is done as Sister Trish and Brother
Mike Moslin changed the ballast and put in new
light bulbs. Some big thanks for the generous do-
nation of their time and hard work.
Our General Meeting was moved to September 11
due to the Labor Day holiday. I was proud to set
up a small remembrance of 9-11 having
firefighters, police officers and veterans of the
lodge stand by our flag during a candlelit 3
minutes of silence and then to have all members
recite our Pledge of Allegiance and sing the
Star-Spangled Banner. The King (Matthew Duffy)
stood in as Chaplain again for Jean – she wrote a
solemn prayer that Matthew read.
As I write this, the Feast Thank You and the
Fashion Show have not occurred – will report on in the
next edition. Please see calendar and flyers inside
newsletter for October events: Italian Night/Football
Wedding, Culture and Heritage Night, Sands Casino
trip and Halloween Hop. In addition, our General
Meeting on October 2 will be shortened and a kick-off
for all members to our 50th Anniversary year (see flyer
inside) will take place.
Prayers go out to all in Texas with Hurricane Harvey
and all in the islands, Florida and other East Coast
states affected by Hurricane Irma. Action by Cellini
has been taken as we started collecting for a hurricane
relief fund at our 9/11 General Meeting. We will
collect again at the next meeting and if you would like
to donate to Cellini Lodge #2206 and can’t be there
please contact me email or phone (remember page 2 of
newsletter has Officers’ phone numbers).
May all of us in the Northeast enjoy Nature’s bright
color show: the changing of the leaves in October.
Quando l’amico chiede, non v’è domani. – When a
friend asks, there is no tomorrow.
God Bless you and your family, God Bless our
ancestors and heritage and God Bless America!
Stammi Bene,
