38th annual SAC. JAZZ FESTIVAL & JUBILEE

May 27–30, 2011 – Memorial Day Wknd.

I.can’t believe how fast time flies! .When I agreed to return as Executive

Director after Gene Berthelsen left last year, it was to be an interim appointment. As we approached the Jazz Festival & Jubilee, it didn’t seem to be a good time for a change in leadership. Now, over a year has passed, and it’s time for me to turn the reins over to someone else. I will be resigning the position of Execu-tive Director effective October 1st.

The Board of Directors has made a wise choice, I believe, in selecting Greg Willett to fulfill the role as your new Executive Director. Greg is a musician who is completely dedicated to STJS, its education programs and festival. He has years of marketing and public relations experience in Sacramento, relates well to people, and has passion and enthu-siasm for our mission: to preserve and promote traditional jazz. As many of you know, Greg was a volunteer with our festival’s Public Relations Committee for eight years before joining the staff at the Jazz Office. In addition, Greg has been a loyal Festival & Jubilee attendee since the age of eleven.

I will remain as an Administrative

Consultant, overseeing the financial aspect of the organization and helping Greg understand the complexity of our numerous programs. I will also oversee the grants and their reporting require-ments. I intend to remain actively involved with the Education Commit-tee, as this is truly where my passion is—the education of young musicians in “our music.”

I can’t thank all of you enough for your support and encouragement; this is a job that requires it. If I started thanking each person individually, I would definitely go over my allotted word count; just know that you are all very much appreciated. I especially want to thank our office staff: Vivian Abraham, Jennifer Colindres, Scott Kaufman, John Cocuzzi, and Greg Willett, who really made an effort this year to be a cohesive team.

I would also like to recognize some folks who resigned this year: Felix Smith has resigned as Membership Chair. He has done a marvelous job with this committee and is assisting the new Chair, Dave Becker, with the transition. Bill Evans has devoted a great number of years to STJS,

President’s Messageby Tom Duff STJS . PRESIDENT

< to m . d u f f @ h p. co m >

The change of seasons from summer to autumn is upon us and changes are occurring at STJS. If you attended the Desert

Cities Jazz Band concert with Debby Boone and Hal Linden, all I can say is WOW! What a great concert and a fun time. Big thanks to Jim Roberson for pulling off this event and to the volunteers who gave their time to make it a success. The River Cats game was also a good, fun time at the old ballpark. Everyone who attended said we should make this an annual event. I couldn’t agree more!!

There are major changes in the Office. First, Bill Evans retired from his employment as warehouse manager effective Sept 1st. Bill spent 32 years working for the Jazz Society and has been an integral part of the festival, Jazz Camps, and the Society’s opera-tions. Please join me in thanking Bill for his service to our organi-zation, and wish him well in the next chapter of his life.

The Jazz Society also accepted the resignation of Jill Harper as Executive Director. Thank you, Jill, for your unfailing service to the organization! Jill has been involved with the Society for many, many years and has put her heart and soul into our orga-nization. Jill will be available to provide assistance as our new director transitions in and she continues to manage and develop grants and programs for the Society.

Greg Willett accepted the position of Executive Director effec-tive Oct 1, 2010, and I am excited to have him in that role. Greg has extensive experience in sales and sponsorships, and brings a new dimension to STJS and the many activities of our society. I know all of you will provide support to Greg and all the activities that he is planning. Please join me in welcoming Greg to his new position.

As I mentioned in last month’s article, we are sprucing up the office and providing upgraded technology. This gives us the capabilities to enhance our volunteer and membership databases as well as find better ways to manage our events. A big thank you to everyone who assisted me in networking the office: David Hickok, Paul Robb, Dave Becker and Mark Naber. In keeping with upgrading the office, we are looking for volunteers to assist us in painting the office as well. Please call the office to sign up, then be sure to bring your brushes, rollers and pans. You can’t beat the companionship we volunteers provide to one another!

The STJS newsletter has been arriving late or not at all for the last two months—a very serious matter related to our mass mail-ing service, and it will be corrected. See the related article (at left) by Felix Smith. Thank You for your patience.

Finally, you don’t want to miss Jazz Sunday in Oct. featuring RedSkunk Jipzee Swing Band. If you saw them at the Jazz Fes-tival & Jubilee, then you know that they are a “must see.” 2

Notes... (cont.)both as a festival volunteer and as the Facilities Coordinator for the Jazz Camps. His work in these areas is invaluable. We couldn’t have done so much without him. Linda Cousins man-aged our bar operation at the festival for a number of years and was able bring her organizational skills to her job in a way that allowed us to analyze this operation effectively.

One last thing: We could still use a volunteer with experi-ence in database management (Access) here in the office, and we are definitely still looking for someone to sell advertising—both for the “AATJ” each month and for the festival program.

We are currently in the process of networking our comput-ers, painting the office and generally bringing STJS into the 21st century. You will all be invited to come and see it when the work is done. Thanks again, see you at Jazz! 2

What happened to thenewsletter? An explanation

by Felix Smith STJS .VOLUNTEER

Many of our members failed to receive their beloved “AATJ” .newsletter for the months of August and Sep-

tember. What happened? Is there a solution?

Yes. STJS is working to solve the problem that was discov-ered within our bulk-mailing service. The artwork was delivered to the printer in a timely fashion. Carwen completed the task of printing the many copies, which were then delivered to our mail-ing service. The processing of our newsletter was not properly handled, so it was delivered to the Post Office LATE.

STJS apologizes to everyone not receiving the newslet-ter. We were not aware there was a problem until calls started coming into the office. We’ve mailed out issues to anyone who has called the office. Please know that if you are still missing an issue (August or September), call the office at 916.372.5277, and we’ll get it in the mail to you right away.

Our bulk mailer has provided great service and value for many years, and we are grateful for their efforts. STJS is making some changes and will no longer be using our old mailing service. All efforts associated with mailing the monthly “AATJ” newsletter will henceforth be carried out in the Jazz Office by STJS staff.

Again, we apologize for any confusion, and look forward to timely delivery in the months to come. 2

EDITOR’S NOTE re. BULK MAIL: Delivery may take a few days or a few weeks. If your “AATJ” is always weeks late, please call the office to let us know your ZIP CODE so we may investigate.

Where Have All the Years Gone?

by Ron Swehla STJS .HISTORIAN

Recently, I was catching up on my filing and archiving ..many of the recent donations that I have received from

members and other folks interested in our type of music. One item that I came across was the July 1986 edition for “And All That Jazz.” This was a very special edition in that it had so many wonderful articles and pictures (over 160) of the recent 13th annual Jubilee. It was great fun to look through and read all the articles.

Dave Lewis of the Natural Gas Jazz Band managed to do something that I have tried to do since I have been going to our Festival/Jubilee but have never gotten too far in the quest: He managed to hear one full song from 99 of the 104 bands that played in the Jubilee. The whole list of songs and bands Dave heard take up almost two full pages of the issue. Quite a feat!

I could not help but notice all the venues that were listed in the program that have passed into history. Veteran attendees can perhaps enlighten us with some memories of these locations: Old Town Pavilion, L Street Rendez-vous, 4th and Jazz, Chinese Garden Sky room, Macy’s Jazz Shoppe, Clarion Terrace Room, Sacramento Theater, N Street Transfer, Mel and Ozzie’s, Tom Kennedy Ballroom, Woodside Ballroom, El Rancho 4 Seasons, the American Legion and the Back Hall Youth Room.

Chuck Butler, who is still one of our most enthusiastic STJS Boosters, must not have slept for days after the Jubilee because he had to write no less than 6 articles for this edition, including articles about the headquarters trailer (still located under the freeway), the new venue for the banjo concert in the Holiday Inn Ballroom, an interesting article how the Jubilee had put Sacramento on the map, a feature article about a spe-cial guest appearance from Helen Forrest, and finally, a nice biographical article featuring Burt Wilson.

Vivian Abraham, our Society’s Business Manager and event coordinator for I do not know how many past festivals can certainly have some sympathy for this message: “Badge Sales, 4th and Kay, to Jubilee Jazz base: We have 30 people in line, and I am all out of All-Event badges—HELP!”

It must have taken the editor of that day, Jayne Konrad, her nine writers, four photographers, and three layout folks quite some time and effort to put this wonderful edition of our monthly paper together. If you like history, then this edition is a must read. We have extras in the office that can be borrowed by just leaving me a message at the office: (916) 372-5277. 2

musicals in the U.S. and Canada and is the past musical direc-tor for the S.S. Admiral, a riverboat on the St. Louis riverfront. After touring the U.S. and Europe for several years with his own jazz band and a St. Louis-based blues band, he decided to devote his musical talents entirely to traditional jazz, play-ing concerts and festivals as well as recording with several St. Louis bands. Let’s offer a warm welcome to Brian when he comes to the Dante Club on Nov. 14th. 2

“K-K-K-Katie!” Boy, I’ll bet she hasn’t heard THAT before! But if she had, we know she would have been a good sport about it, because she was such a good sport, and had so much fun, and played such fabulous music last Sunday! We’re talking about Katie Cavera, dubbed the “California Sunshine Girl” by friend Clint Baker, who showed up to play tuba on Katie’s first set and trumpet on her second. So we got two ter-rific guests for the price of one. Katie held her own musically and in raillery against Bob Sakoi, Paul Edgerton, Bran-don Au, Bob Ringwald and Vince Bartels (Gary Reynolds switched out with Brandon on Set 4, and Stan Jarmolowicz was on bass). And just to be sure she got her money’s worth, Katie also sat in later in the Tailgate where she joined Sakoi, Larry Tyrell, Bob Noren, Cleve Baker, Jan Buhlert, Dan Lobay, among others. Julie Gallaher was on vocals.

Stanley J was looking particularly cheerful—girlfriend Rebecca Rosal was by his side. And an aside about Dan Lobay: Our esteemed Jazz Sunday Drum Czar had a heart

attack, which resulted in surgery to place a stent two weeks ago. He’s back at work, and he not only looks better, he says he feels better! He certainly stood up to the rigors of the day with no problem.

And back to the Main Stage... Set 1 featured the FreeBadge Serenaders (former TNT members Greg Sabin and Patrick Skiffington). Not to take anything away from their originality, the first thought I had was that they are Dendle and Erickson writ young—loads of fun, inventive, versatile, talented. Their bio lists 10 “instruments” between the two (including whis-tling, which they use liberally). They announced “Buddy Can You Spare a Dime?” for the Modern Age: “I’m upside down on love, girl, and on my mortgage, too.”

Eugene Peebles brought his musical instrument in a U-Haul Trailer—the first time we’ve had a Jazz Hammond Organ at Jazz Sunday! (His other ax is a sax.) Eugene and his Trio (Steve Browning on guitar and John Armato on drums) were recently featured on Good Day Sacramento. Nice, smooth “Misty,” and Eugene gets lots of extra points for serenading the Sound Crew all through equipment set-up.

Nice surprise to see Bill & Marie Dickson’s smiling faces. Bill joined Justin and Brandon Au, Dominic Ruggieri, Alan

Ginter and Jim Roberson on Set 5 on the Main Stage. “Wash-ington & Lee Swing” was wild, man. Brandon and Justin have been wildly entertaining on this season of “Name That Song” on YouTube. Check out Episode 15.

And check out the well-deserved plaque President Tom Duff presented to Bill Schoening, Jazz Impresario of Mather Field Rd. Straw Hat. Ever modest, calls for “speech” were met by Bill with a recitation of upcoming artists.

We were pleased and honored to have Rae Ann Berry of San Francisco videotaping the Main Stage events for the day. Rae Ann’s bona fides are high quality. Her brother, clarinetist Joe Hopkins, leads 52nd Street Jazz Band, Moldy Fig Jazz Band, and is a Director for the American Federation of Jazz Societies. Check out Rae Ann’s SF Bay Area Hot Jazz Guide at www.sfraeann.com—great showcase for OKOM.

Heading into the Gold Card room, where Tyrell, Lockwood, Kramer, Warmdahl, Blucher and Benjamini started the day, followed by Greenstein, Paulus, Bua, Blucher, Melnikov and L. Salerno. Charlie Hull, Maestro Meyers, Alan Ginter and Jim Roberson provided great support for the vocal set. They were followed by Jerry Ford, Bill Au, Ruggieri, John Wilder, Pearl Nicolino, Scotty Harper and Tony Bellacera

on Set 4, and Mootz, Lockwood, Berthelsen, Melnikov, Pof-finbarger, Lobay and Chan finished up with a hot, hot set. Chan, you say? David Chan and Rene Alarcón found STJS on the Web, and we immediately put his keyboard skills to the test—no problem! And Poffinbarger? Our Ned turned 81 on September 10. You would never guess it! Happy Birthday!

Ray Allinger of the Jubilee Grunt Crew, was motorvating by wheel chair, a new—and we hope temporary—accoutre-ment. He blames wife Bonnie for the broken hip; she parked the RV a half-step too far away! She and the cat had to drive back to Sac whilst Kaiser flew Ray home after surgery. We’re glad they were both out for Jazz Sunday.

The Vocal Set was especially fun and varied: Vivian Lee did a beautiful version of Sesame Street’s “Rainbow Connec-tion,” Clint Ritchie singed the rafters on “You Don’t Know Me,” Cherie Murphy’s daughter Pam, escorted by a couple of her vocal students, did a subdued and lovely “Maybe You’ll Be There.” Joan AuBin said she got her Gold Card and then promptly started working 2 or 3 jobs. This was her first time back, and she got back in the groove with “Saving My Love for You.” I counted 14 vocalists! Beth Duncan closed out with a blazing “If You Don’t Like My Peaches.” (cont. on page 11)

Julie & Larry Toquet from Northridge were accompanied by their friends Lillian & George Stephenson, all here on their first visit. Jerry O’Hearn was hoping to meet up with son Mike, a trumpeter. I don’t know if Mike arrived, but Jerry certainly was enjoying himself either way.

We are sorry to learn of the death of Gold Card bassist Frank Marquis, a few weeks short of his 93rd birthday. Frank and Mousey were longtime STJS members. When Mousey died in May, Frank moved to Colorado to be close to their daughter. Jean Weathers and Frank provided accompaniment for the Country Club Aires until he moved. He is much missed.

Ellie (last name?) reminded me what a sweet guy trombon-ist Roy Pierce is—brought back some nice memories. Donna Pulcifer-Broyles’ beautiful daughter took a break from Sac City College to come help on the Admissions table.

Keep a good thought for Yvonne Soto; she injured both her shoulders and is healing slowly. Nice to be introduced to Marci Crawford’s son, John. He works on the Youth Educa-tion Committee, promotions and ticket sales. Bill Taylor was enjoying the Tailgate, as were Scott Doggett and his escort for the day: daughter Victoria.

Let’s hit the Tailgate, shall we? Greenstein, O’Day, Nico-lino, Collver, Bellacera, Purcell, Mootz, Ruggieri, Lock-wood, Au (Justin), Edgerton (Thomas), Salerno (Larry), Mahliya Montgomery, Sakoi, Tyrell, Noren, Baker, Buhlert, Cavera, Lobay, Gallaher, Price, Chan, Davenport and Warmdahl, in approximately that order. And a lot of good music resulted. In Jane’s absence, Frank Lindskoog was the Room Runner, assisted by Larry Tyrell.

I heard that Carl “Sonny” Leyland has been inducted into the Boogie-Woogie Hall of Fame in Cincinnati. Carl is a Jubi-lee and West Coast Ragtime favorite, and definitely a Boogie Woogie master. Congrats. His Trio will be at Sac Jazz 2011!

Hey, did you make it out to SacJazz Night at the River Cats? What a blast (even if the Cats didn’t win)! And a really appreciative crowd welcomed the wonderful Desert Cities Jazz Band with Debby Boone and Hal Linden. (Yeah, he’s pretty good!)

Had an especially charming conversation with Wally Grif-fin, who stopped on his way home from the Tailhook Conven-tion to see his old friend, Pat Devaney. Wally graduated from Fremont High in Oakland in 1939; Pat in 1940. When they ran into each other during the War, Wally was a pilot and Pat was a “white hat.” Pat asked for a quick look around but says his better judgment took over before they got airborne. Wally was wearing the flight jacket he was awarded for 1000 hours as a

Dante Club Notes (cont.) volunteer docent on the Midway (he’s up to 1800 hours now). He really enjoyed the day, both the music and the get-together with his old friend.

Mabel Burhans performs with Golden Breeze Taiko, and confided that the group will be at Freedom Park in North High-lands on October 16, performing sometime between 11 to 3. I plan to be there. I’ll also be at Cherrine Murphy’s 80th Birth-day celebration at JB’s Lounge on Sept. 19. (Bet we had fun!)

Headed for Pismo, of course, and there’s Arizona Classic and San Diego festivals coming soon. And for goodness’ sake, mark your calendars NOW for Up Close & Personal with Tom Hook and Bob Draga on December 2. The Yacht Club is perfect for an intimate gathering, and it raises money for Youth Education. The perfect package! (See pg. 7 ad.) 2
