SPR is your reliable and trustworthy source of information. You may not know that public media reaches about 98% of the US population with great service. And SPR is this source for most of Eastern Washington and the Inland Northwest. We are an essential public service for our region— and for us, it’s a public trust. From FY2020 to FY2021, SPR’s traditional operating revenues were heavily impacted due to Covid— as much as 20%. Your support has been critical to our service, and SPR was further helped with local, state, and national emergency grants, and extra donations and gifts like yours. Thank you. SPR further compensated for these losses by not immediately replacing several staff positions, and working to reduce program costs wherever possible. Yet the pandemic continues, and in Eastern Washington and North Idaho it hasn’t lessened much, to say the least. Our conservative efforts have helped, but it’s not a sustainable strategy in the long term. Ironically, our service must actually increase for the good of our communities when circumstances—be it fire, smoke, flood, ice and wind, or a pandemic—are most challenging. Looking and Moving Forward We have, for example, diverted considerable resources to reporting on the pandemic, keeping our communities informed of vaccine availability, educating our listeners with verified facts concerning the virus and community health, economic impacts, etc.—even as we maintain everything else. Programming costs (NPR, other production partners, and local productions) are projected to increase by 3% for FY22. So our goal is to continue providing a great service—even through challenging times. We’ve had to replace critical equipment, and even managed to expand our staff to normal (-ish) levels again, particularly in news. SPR’s board is actively engaged in strategic planning to help us not only to survive— but to thrive—in order to better serve you and our communities. For decades, SPR has provided much with relatively meager resources. In order to bring the station into the modern world, today we now bear modern costs. Things will never be the same, but you can help return service to a new normal with your support—be it time, treasure, or talent. Your help is essential, much appreciated, and more important than ever. We have a great line up of new programs, local and regional coverage, and of course NPR, BBC, other great national programs, and more. We are still here for you—because of you. Thank you. -Cary Boyce, President and General Manager Continued on the back page Donate today at SpokanePublicRadio.org and become a sustaining part of your NPR member station When you support Spokane Public Radio You help provide news, music, and entertainment to the entire Inland Northwest and beyond Volume 41 / No. 4 October to December 2021 The Guide Your Connection to Spokane Public Radio
