April 2020

Volume 40 Issue 2

President’s Message What a crazy world we are living in at the moment. I hope all of you are staying safe and sheltering in place. Thank goodness we have a great hobby to keep all of us occupied and home during this COVID-19 health emergency. When we are able to meet together again, I hope everyone will have some great carvings to share with all of us.

We have a few items and events to look forward to in the future that I would like to share with you. Our first event that is still scheduled to take place is the Matthew’s Farmers Market on May 16th from 8AM to 12PM. Please bring a lawn chair and come to share and promote woodcarving to the public. Enjoy the fellowship with your fellow club members after being isolated for so long. This event will be repeated on October 10 from 8AM-12PM latter in the year. Thanks to Bill Robinson for being in charge of these two outreach events at the Matthew’s Farmers Market.

Everything is on track for Wild Acres which will be held August 17th-23rd this year. If you have ever gotten a chance to go for this carving extravaganza it is a treat. Please see Rod Gatlin’s article about this retreat for all of the details about our instructors and Wild Acres beautiful setting.

On September 5th -7th Matthew’s Alive Festival will be held and we need everyone to participate to support our club for this fun filled weekend. The hours are September 5th 11AM-7:30PM, September 6th 12PM-7:30PM, and September7th 9AM-4PM. Come carve for the day or half a day all weekend long. This is a tremendous opportunity for our club because we receive money that sponsors our two social events during Christmas and for our Summer picnic. We also pass out cards for our February Showcase which is scheduled for February 19th-23rd this year.

Autumn Treasures Festival in Waxhaw is one more way we reach out to the public to promote our club and hobby. It is held the second weekend in October. The hours are Saturday 10AM-6PM and Sunday 12PM-4PM in Waxhaw. Local crafters, entertainment, along with great BBQ make this event one you do not want to miss. The Charlotte Woodcarving Club will have a tent and we will need club members to participate. Thanks goes out to Joe Bomba for heading up this event.

We will remain closed on Tuesdays at the Woodcraft and Carmel Presbyterian Church locations for carving or until the stay at home order is lifted.

I leave you with a quote to lighten your spirit:

“just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly” Proverb

Stay safe and hoping we will be together again very soon!

Marcy Chirdon

Summer Carving Retreat at Wildacres The response to our summer carving retreat in the NC mountains has been great. As of the writing of this article Wildacres is still planning on our visit in August 17th thru 23rd. Let's hope we are able to keep to that plan. We will certainly be ready for it. Jim Hiser will be our instructor for the first part of the week, beginning Monday afternoon August 17th. This class filled up rapidly, and we are starting a waiting list for those interested. Jim is a CCA member and this will be his first time teaching for us at Wildacres. The class is for 3 days and will end at noon on Thursday, August 20th. For those coming for the whole week, we will have Thursday afternoon free, and will probably plan a field trip for anyone interested. Mitch Cartledge will be our instructor beginning Friday morning at 9:00AM. Mitch is also a CCA member and is no stranger to Wildacres or our club. We look forward to having him back again. His class will end Sunday afternoon. As of this writing there are a couple of spots available, so if you are thinking about it please sign up soon. You can take either class or both, assuming space is available. Wildacres is a great getaway place if you have never been there. Learn more on their website at wildacres.org. For more information and a signup form contact Rod Gatlin at 704-574-6035.

Carol Leavy, CCA, Santa carving class

February 24-26, 2020.

by Neil McGuire

Rod Gatlin took advantage of having the Caricature Carvers of America members with us this year and scheduled Carol Leavy to teach us how to carve a Santa.

Twelve members started carving on Monday, and by Wednesday had a completed Santa (some had several Santa faces.)

Carol went around to each of us with individualized instruction and encouragement. Then on Wednesday she showed us her method and color selection for painting.

As you can see, we all had a great time!!!

This show is dedicated to all those on the front lines who are sacrificing and giving of themselves during these times. Show them some love and let your piece be the voice of gratitude
