This will require Physical Plant electricians to have the life safety systems power off on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 6:15 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. This shutdown will affect the stairwell lighting, exit lighting, fire alarm systems, phone systems and any other equipment on the emergency generator. This shutdown will not affect normal building power. Dr. Yan is a candidate for a senior faculty position as part of the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Program Cluster Hire. His research interests are centered on how sperm and oocytes are produced in mammals. His laboratory investigates which of the germ cell-specific genes and pathways they are involved in are essential for successful production of gametes. Current research efforts in his laboratory are focused on the following three topics: (1) the regulation of protein turnover by ubiquitination during spermiogenesis; (2) the control of cytoplasm removal during sperm individualization and spermiation (sperm release); (3) physiological roles of germ cell-specific small non-coding RNAs. A. Personal Statement I worked as a coroner (forensic pathologist) after I graduated from medical school. I later worked on DNA-based individual identification techniques for forensic purposes. After 5 years as a forensic expert, I realized that I liked biomedical research. So I went to University of Turku, Finland and started working on testicular biology under the guidance of Drs. Jorma Toppari, Martti Parvinen and Ilpo Huhtaniemi. After I finished my PhD, I joined Dr. Martin Matzuk’s lab in Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX as a post-doc and worked on ovarian biology. I started my own lab in 2004 in the University of Nevada School of Medicine. My primary research interests lie in gametogenesis. In particular, I am curious about the molecular mechanism underlying sperm production and paternal contribution to fertilization and early embryonic development. My work has been continuously funded by the NIH for the past 8 years. I have published 72 papers as of March 2012. My other credentials can be found below.
