NOVEMBER 2021 VOLUME 38 · NUMBER 11 · RICHARD BETTINI, PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER · DR. STEPHEN BRADLEY, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER · DAN GOMES, BOARD CHAIR Pu‘uhonua Blessing of School-Based Trailer at Waianae High On October 1, 2021 Wa‘ianae High School and the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC) School-Based Health Center (SBHC) Team dedicated the Hale Ola Kino Maika‘i Medical Trailer. Also known as Pu‘uhonua, the air-conditioned trailer will be a comfortable, welcoming place of refuge, peace and safety for teens. Nā ‘Ōpio o Pu‘uhonua, and the shaded area outside, will also be used as a meeting space for small groups of students and the WCCHC SBHC Team to discuss health and wellness topics. Native Hawaiian culture emphasizes the importance of pū‘ulu (group) and family over the individual. The concept of the pū‘ulu symbolizes inclusiveness. Each person has an opinion or story that contributes to the group. Group sessions create connections to others, forming strong bonds, especially as they discuss challenging issues, and help one another realize that they are not alone. Group settings are often more acceptable for students who shy away from interventions focusing solely on individual needs and have been effective in promoting healthy changes. The trailer will also be used for special SBHC programs, such as classes, community vaccine pod, and special health screenings. The Pu‘uhonua is the latest edition to WCCHC’s school-based services for Wai‘anae coast students. In 2016, SBHCs were established at Wai‘anae Intermediate School and Wai‘anae High School. In 2018, the SBHC opened at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School. These SBHCs offer a full range of pediatric clinical services every school day including diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries, sports physicals, management of chronic diseases such as asthma and referrals for behavioral health services. The SBHCs offer rapid testing for COVID-19 to symptomatic students, as well as COVID-19 vaccines. Nā ‘Ōpio o Pu‘uhonua was funded by a grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Top row from left to right: John Griego (WCCHC Sr. Director of Facilities, Planning & Design), Vanessa Razon (SBHC APRN Provider), Alysa Pieper (SBHC Sr. Clinic Manager), Felicia Corenevsky (WHS SBHC Clinic Manager), Verna Landford-Bright (WHS Parent Community Network Coordinator), Michael Chow (DOE), and Ray Pikelny-Cook (WHS Principal). Bottom row from left to right: Dr. May Okihiro (WCCHC Director of Research/Pediatrician), Juanita Benioni (Ha Ola Village Executive Assistant), Dr. Vija Sehgal (WCCHC Chief Quality Officer/Pediatrician), Kamaki Kanahele (WCCHC Traditional Healer - Director), Kekoa Hew-Len (Kako’o, Native Hawaiian Healing Center), Blane Garcia (WCCHC Health Educator/Community Health Worker Trainer), and Dr. Kyle Chang (WCCHC Psychologist). Dental Clinic Receives $40K From Hawaii Dental Services Mahalo to our community partner, Hawaii Dental Services (HDS) Foundation, for their generosity to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC) Dental Clinic. The HDS Foundation provides assistance to non-profit organizations for oral health promotion, education, and to improve access to care. With the support of HDS Foundation, the WCCHC Dental Clinic was able to replace old dental equipment. This donation will decrease the delay in services that was associated with frequent repairs and allow for us to have a greater capacity to serve those within the Waianae community. Our Dental Clinic is Open! Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice. COVID – 19 has caused us to look at ways to make sure we can minimize the risk of contracting the disease when anyone visits us. We follow the guidelines of the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that are issued. Here are some changes we made to help protect our patients and staff: Face Covering. All patients are required to bring and wear a face covering and to practice hand hygiene when they arrive for their appointment. It must be worn at all times except when directed by the dental staff to remove for treatment. Patient Screening. All scheduled patients are screened for COVID-19 symptoms. Temperatures are taken prior to the appointment. If any responses suggest you may have the disease, or if you have a fever, you will be asked to reschedule the appointment. WCCHC employee screening. All staff including our Dentists are properly trained to ensure the health safety of each patient and fellow staff member. All staff and providers providing direct patient care are fully vaccinated with one of the COVID vaccines. If staff have any symptoms or are feeling sick, they are not to report to work. Disinfection protocols to address aerosols. Besides wiping and disinfecting all clinical surfaces after every patient, the air exchange rate in the office has been evaluated to assure that it meets regulatory standards. The rooms are also fogged with a disinfectant between visits. Stronger clinical protocols. New equipment and more stringent clinical techniques are being employed to minimize transmission of viruses into the air. This includes the use of techniques or technology that removes or kills viruses. Limited appointments and visitors. Appointments are spread apart to allow for social distancing between patients and time for disinfection of the treatment rooms. This means that we may not be able to see as many patients per day as we had in the past. Patients are strongly encouraged to come alone to their appointment so we can limit the number of people in the building at any one time. Minors or other patients requiring assistance will be allowed one visitor. The visitor will be screened the same as a patient. Changes in waiting room protocols. Social distancing requirements will dictate the number of individuals who can remain in the waiting room area. If the room is full, please wait outside or in your car. Verify the cell phone number that we have on record is accurate so that we can call you and let you know the dentist is ready to see you. We look forward to seeing you again. To make an appointment, please call our office at 697-3496. Thank you. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors, and friends. ~ Mahalo from the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center Dental Staff Top row from left to right: Cheryl Kozai (WCCHC Senior Director of Integrated Services), Mark Yamakawa (HDS Foundation President & CEO, and Shere Shaneishi-Kim (HDS Foundation Director).
