News from Wing Ding

Wing Ding has come and gone. I know this

year's event seemed to be an extension of last

year's event (as they were both in Tennessee) but

it was well worth the trip. I hope you will enjoy

my take on this year's event.

Wing Ding 2020

I heard multiple theories for WHY Wing

Ding has declined in popularity. One was the

date. The others revolved around the location.

Many people felt that the start of school hindered

attendance. I know people felt that Nashville

offered great entertainment opportunities, but

very few riding choices. Well, get ready to drop

those objections in 2020! Next year's event will

be held in Springfield, Missouri during July 4th

weekend. Springfield hosted Wing Ding several

years ago and is eager to host it again. Expect

them to roll out the red carpet. I'm looking at

staying in Branson where the best riding starts.

So, let's start making plans now to attend next

year's event!

The New Staff Position

We have been tasked at naming a new staff

member that I am sure will please many of our

members. The new position is: Skills

Enhancement Activities Coordinator. This

position is a bit different than the old "educator"

position. First of all: NO PAPERWORK! Our

new coordinator will NOT have reports and

paperwork to fill out. His/her job will be to come

up with activities that will help members become

better, safer riders. The idea is to attract

members to safe behaviors. It seems that some

chapters dragged members kicking and

screaming to educational events. I don't think

that was a problem in Chapter H, but it must

have been in other chapters.

Exciting New Product

I promise that I'm not getting a cut for this

part of the article. I did run into one new product

that caught my eye. "Heads Up Braking" is a

light module that mounts to your helmet. The

transmitter mounts in the trunk and may or may

not be hard wired to the motorcycle. The LED

brake lights activate anytime the brakes are

activated and/or anytime the motorcycle

decelerates. An issue that we all deal with is cars

and trucks that don't notice when we slow down.

The accelerometer senses any sudden

deceleration such as engine braking or using an

uphill grade to slow down naturally and warns

following motorists of the change in speed. So, I

bought one. I will be using it on rides, so

hopefully, you will get the chance to see it in

action.

The Coastal Trip

One emphasis at the Chapter Director

Meeting was to get out and do things. Chapter H

(as usual) is leading the way. Our next big event

is our trip to the coast October 25, 26, and 27. I

hope you are making plans to be there. Book

your lodging as soon as possible. The Bay View

Inn in Lockport is available for $75/night

through www.hotels.com the manager also runs

the Harbor Inn next door and is offering the same

rate. Teresa and I went through

www.vrbo.com to get a house in Aransas Pass

for $99/night. Remember that Rockport, Fulton,

and Aransas Pass are very close together. Even

Port Aransas is close, but you do have to take the

ferry. This trip is open to anyone, member or not,

and would be a great way to attract non-

GWRRA members.

Other Events

Our chapter gathering is September 5th at

6:30 at Aspen Creek Grill. I am looking forward

to seeing everyone there. September 7 is "Iron

Asses for Bad Asses." It starts at Javelina

Harley-Davidson in Boerne. Again, another

opportunity to show off our chapter! They are

welcome in GWRRA (even if their motorcycles

make noise!). You can link to more information

on our chapter web-site calendar.

Ride safe!

Welcome to GWRRA Texas Chapter H

Happy Labor Day to all!!!

As we move into the Labor Day weekend, I’m sure

many of you will be out riding and enjoying the

sunshine in other ways. I hope everyone has a great

time and finishes the weekend and gets home safely.

On our most recent Saturday ride, we came upon an

accident that was being cleared on a curve in the

road. We saw a vehicle flipped on its side and a

wrecker in the process of flipping it back over. Not

knowing exactly what happened, it’s hard to

speculate what caused the accident. From what we

saw, it was obvious that the car had hit a guardrail

and been flipped on its side. The only thing that we

could figure that might have caused this was being

blinded by the sun. It was the correct time of day for

the sun to be in the correct position to blind a person

coming into that curve at that time. This was not a

pleasant site to see out on a beautiful morning for a

ride. We weren’t able to tell the extent of any

injuries to the people in the car, but hopefully nothing

life threatening.

There is a story going around on the Internet of a

universal distress signal for motorcycle riders. If you

are in distress, place your helmet on the ground

behind your motorcycle. While this may or may not

be a universal distress signal, this may not be a bad

idea. Most riders are fortunate to have kind people

on the roads with them who will stop (if they can) to

offer assistance to riders that are on the side of the

road. Even if you have pulled over to read a map,

make a phone call or just to give yourself a break,

there are some people who will still stop to offer

assistance. And sometimes, it may even be another

rider.

Something to always keep in mind when riding is that

you are always looking out for yourself. Carry a

phone with you, let people know where you are going

and when you expect to be back. Remember, we’re

not just riders, we’re people too.
