The existing Westview Estates Neighborhood Association, led for many years by Charles Passmore, voted to disband in November 2007. Recent events led Charles to decide to step down from his leadership role. Charles has put countless hours into leading this organization, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts, as our neighborhood is the better for his efforts. This brings us to the decision point noted above. Should we have a Neighborhood Association? If so, what type of organization should it be and what should it do? I believe that the answer to the first question is yes - for the following reasons. First, we need to stay informed of events that can affect our neighborhood. The area around our little enclave is changing rapidly. The City of Austin and other entities take great pains to communicate with neighborhood associations and rely on associations to pass news on to members. Second, having an organization allows greater standing when events, such as the recent Mowinkle rezoning case, arise. An organization also allows the neighborhood to participate in the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN), which has worked on behalf of the interests of southwest Travis County for many years. The existence of an organization also allows us to work with Peel and Associates to distribute this newsletter. We all know that there is strength in numbers when faced with a threat or dealing with elected officials. Therefore, I believe the reconstitution of a neighborhood association for Westview Estates will benefit each of us. That leads to the second question, what type of organization should it be and what should it do? The events of the past year lead me to conclude that most Westview residents are not interested in attending a lot of meetings just for the sake of meeting, yet we are very willing to gather and get involved when an issue arises. This leads me to think that a Westview Estates Neighborhood Association should be a strictly voluntary organization, open to all residents by virtue of their presence, with all communication going to every household and participation encouraged by all, when needed. This can be done through email and the newsletter you are now reading. Meetings can be kept to a minimum, yet called when open discussion or quick action is called for. I would be interested in learning the opinion of others on this matter. If there are Westview residents who believe that the continuance of an association makes sense and who support the idea, I would like to hear from you. If you believe that an association will not serve a useful purpose or are fearful of such an organization, I would like to hear from you as well. Please contact me at [email protected] with your thoughts. The Future of the Westview Estates Neighborhood Association By Kevin Good (WE) Don't want to wait for the Mail?
