Luther Ness Monday March 15 th , 2010 the first annual SVECC photo show was held from 1 to 4 pm in the Mesa Verde Room. Nearly 200 visitors attended the well received event. 150 dazzling photos were submitted, each one assigned to one of eight special designated picturesque and scenic categories. Everyone attending the photo show was invited to vote for their favorite in each category. The Animal category was won by Luther Ness, the People category by Curt Bellin, the Plants category by Chuck Wittenburg, the Landscape category by Myrt Murray, the Cityscape category by Rob Bleckinger, the Weather category by Duane Ross, the Sports category by Norma Walsh and the Open category by Shirley Kettner. Seventeen photos also won special honorable mention. Many positive comments including some from key photographers from other local villages were mentioned during the show. CHAPEL NOTESPastor Wyn Olson

The Village Chapel will observe two special events during May. Mother’s Day on May 9 and Memorial Day on May 30. We will pay tribute to all mothers by making a donation of $500.00 to “RememberNhu” a ministry whose mission is rescuing young girls from the sex trade in Thailand and Cambodia, leading them to Christ and training them for a profi table career. The founder and director of this ministry is Carl Ralston, the son of Bill and Bonnie Ralston, who serve the Lord at our Chapel.

Memorial Sunday we will honor the men and women who have served, or are serving, our country in the military services. We owe all of them and their families a deep debt of gratitude. The service will feature patriotic music by

our choir and congregation. Our guest speaker will be Major Steve Olson, a retired army chaplain. We will also be observing the Lord’s Supper and collecting gifts of food for Sunshine Acres Children’s Home.

May 1, we will be well into our summer season and many of our worshipers will have returned to their homes in cooler parts of the country. We are grateful for the full time residents who continue to worship and serve with us during the lovely summer months. The afternoons get warm, but the mornings are pleasant and our auditorium is air-conditioned.

We have just completed a series of sermons on the theme “Meet Jesus”. This has taken us from His pre-incarnate status as the eternal Son

of God, His birth in Bethlehem, His crucifi xion and His resurrection, to His ascension to heaven with God the Father. May 2, we will begin a series of messages titled, “Shepherding the Flock of God” based on truths revealed through the Apostle Paul in the book of I Thessalonians. The spiritual truths revealed in this book will guide us as we seek a spiritual leader for the future ministry of our Chapel.

The Village Chapel meets each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the SVE Auditorium. Following the Worship Service everyone is invited to join in a time of fellowship with coffee and pastries provided by the Chapel. We would love to have you join us. You will be greeted by a friendly group of people.

THANK YOUKenn Seipp, Director

On behalf of the SVE Singers I want to thank those of you who helped “fi ll the house” at our spring concert on the 25th. Also, thanks for helping us pay for the music for our next program. (The “free will offering” averaged out at $2.22 per attendee.) We will now hibernate for the summer, but will begin rehearsing again on the last Tuesday in September at noon in the Mesa Verde Room. Anyone interested in singing with us can contact me at KSeipp at ASU.EDU. Again . . THANK YOU.

THANK YOUGood Neighbors on Milagro

The children of Josephine Schaeffer wish to thank the kind couple who stopped to help Mrs. Schaeffer on the night of Friday, March 5th after she had fallen taking the garbage can to the street. This wonderful couple helped Mrs. Schaeffer into the house, helped stop the bleeding from her head, and called her daughter to let her know what had happened. They stayed until her daughter arrived, and even cleaned up the bloody sidewalk before leaving. Unfortunately, we did not get their names, but they know and God knows who they are. We thank them and bless then for their kindness. Mrs. Schaeffer is on the mend and celebrated her 98th birthday in March.

Sunland Village East Outlook May 2010 3

Sunland Village East Association Minutes ofThe Board of Directors Meeting

IN THE AUDITORIUMApril 8, 2010

OPEN SESSION – 9:30 a.m.

President Pat requested that comments be limited to fi ve minutes. The following concerns were expressed:

-Some Pool furniture needs to be replaced. They are will be ordered after being approved during the Board Meeting.

-A Wind screen for the Pickleball court is needed. The Board will consider it.

-A more convenient Handicap ramp needs to be installed near the Oakwood Room. Building Committee persons responded. Cost and City code requirements were impediments during planning and construction. Board will look into it.

-North Complex courtyard beauty and auditorium fl oor condition were complimented.

BOARD MEETING

MEETING WAS CALLED to Order at 9:43 a.m. with President Pat Chumbley, Vice President Jim Mayberry, Secretary Gene Trust, Treasurer Rich Hicks, and Directors Judy Abraham, Jeff Bowlds and Ed Malone in attendance. All stood to pledge allegiance to the fl ag of United States of America.

MINUTES FROM MARCH 11 MEETING were approved with one correction.”Minutes from March 11 Meeting” were corrected to read, “Minutes from February 11 Meeting.”

TREASURER’S REPORT - Richard Hicks. March was a very good month with $24,835 of revenue over expenses compared to the budgeted $10,200. There were more title transfers than anticipated. Gas expense was less because of our solar water heating. So were the electric and water expenses. We think our solar system will earn a rebate from SRP for 60 percent of our cost of installing the system. Our cost should be repaid in just over a year. Thereafter, we can expect to save from $5,000 to $7,000 a year. Jeff commented that there were two requests for installation of solar panels on homes last month.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL REPORT

- Jeff Bowlds. There were 22 title transfers of home ownership in March. Last year there were nine in March.

Twenty-seven change requests were submitted and were approved. Four violations were identifi ed and investigated. Year to date, there were 14 violations of which eleven were resolved. Concealment of recycle containers adjacent to the Auditorium will be part of a plan to construct a small maintenance building in the area. Ed resolved the problem of the Tennis trash containers placed in front of a home of a resident who objected to them by having them placed in front of a home of a resident who did not object or having them placed on S. Lily to which the city agreed. Jeff reiterated that residents should fi le requests for change to the exterior of their homes with the offi ce.

SECURITY REPORT – Ed Malone. No numbers of problems were available for March. There are two scams being played in the area. A thief obtains business cards for Realtors and approaches homes with for sale signs and asks to look at the interior and steals items. Never allow unknown persons to view home interiors without being escorted. The other scam is unsolicited home repairers seeking prepayment for work to be done and then disappearing. Keep garage doors closed.

MANAGER’S REPORT - Jim Harrison. 1 A lot of block watch groups are losing

leadership.2. Overlay of pavement on Mesa Verde

parking lot.3. Swimming pool Pop-ups need to be

replaced at the same time as swimming pool resurfacing.

4. Need AED for the softball fi eld.5. Need to paint North swimming pool

kool deck.6. Need to raise the fl oor in the Weight

Room in conjunction with pool deck painting.

7. Raising of stage fl oors is under review by the city.

8. Planning of maintenance building is proceeding.

9. Staff needs to be trained on how to operate AEDs.

OLD BUSINESS

Betty Elm said Brick Sales have slowed down lately, but have realized $96,365 so far. She presented a chart showing the arrangement of bricks. Purchasers can pick a place for their bricks now. This month marks the third anniversary of brick sales. The next batch of brick orders to the engravers should be the last batch.

expenditure of $5,930 for the new fl ooring and upgrade of the North Weight Room. The motion passed unanimously.

2. Rich moved that the Board approve an expenditure of $21,765.34 for the Mesa Verde parking lot resurfacing and accept the bid from Sunland Asphalt Company. The motion passed unanimously.

3. Gene moved that the Board approve an expenditure of $1,625 for the purchase of an Automated External Defi brillator (AED) for the softball area. The motion passed unanimously. The Softball Club volunteered to pay forty (40) percent of the cost. Everyone is encouraged to be trained and be confi dent in AED operations

6. Judy moved that the Board approve an expenditure of $1,000 to paint the North Pool Deck. The motion passed unanimously.

8. Ed moved that the Board approve an expenditure of $3,372 to purchase and install 36 retro in-fl oor heads for the North lap and exercise pools. The motion passed unanimously. Ed commended our maintenance staff.

ANNOUNCEMENTS1. The Presidents Meeting is now called

the Coordinators Meeting to prevent anyone

from thinking that only Club Presidents are invited and to promote greater attendance.

2. A huge bus was picking up passengers in the front parking lot without the knowledge of our Activities Director, Lisa. In the future, whenever anyone schedules a bus pick up, the person should coordinate it with Lisa.

3. The following clubs were recognized and thanked for their contributions:

a. The Tennis Club contributed $5,000 to help pay for improvements to the Tennis Club facilities.

b. Bingo concession group contributed $300 to help pay for the Oakwood Room Sound System.

c. The Softball Club contributed $650 to help pay for the AED in their area.

d. The Sunrunners RV Club contributed $1,615 to help pay for additional lighting for the Palo Verde parking lot.

e. The Bingo and Pancake Breakfast Activities contribute on an on-going basis.

4. The Welcome Committee is being merged into the New Comers Committee in an effort to avoid duplication. The Welcome Committee delivered information packets to new residents. The New Comers Committee meets monthly and provides tours of SVE facilities. The following persons were recognized and thanked for their generous fi ve years of service on the Welcome Committee: Sharon Schwarz (Chairperson), Herb and Alice Henderson, Gus and Bob Hippe, Louise Grove, Keney Foster, and Darrell and Winn Thompson.

5. The Coordinators Meeting will meet in the Mesa Verde Room on April 22 at 9:00 a.m.

COMMENTS1. John Timmer said the Tennis Club

contributed $32,000 last year in addition to this year’s contribution to help pay for improvement to Tennis Club facilities.

2. Betty Elm suggested that the 50/50 proceeds be targeted for specifi c projects, not for the general fund.

3. Rich said the Board has approved expenditures of about $67,000 at this and last months meetings. Normally our capital expenditures for the year is about $150,000, so we are about half way there.

There was no 50/50 Drawing. The Meeting was Adjourned at about 11:16 a.m.Respectfully submittedGene Trust, Secretary

FROM THE PRESIDENTPat Chumbley

The Board, manager and staff are busy getting projects underway, such as the north pools and weight room upgrade, new sound system in the Oakwood Room, additional lighting at the Polo Verde lot and sealing and re-surfacing the Palo Verde and Mesa Verde lots. As you read this, these projects will be in process or have start dates. We will keep you posted through our E-mail, as the pool and parking areas will be closed during the work period. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated.

We are notifying all club presidents and representatives that we are changing the name of the monthly meeting of the Presidents’ Club to Coordinators Meeting. Some clubs do not have presidents and we welcome all clubs to send a representative to these monthly meetings on the 4th Thursday each month, 9:00 AM in the Mesa Verde Room. The purpose of these meetings is communication among the clubs, Board members and Lisa, our activity director regarding

your events and announcements. It is a great way for club representatives to stay informed and take information back to your club members. We hold these meetings year around and welcome all club representatives. Please limit your club to one representative since we have limited space and time.

The activities department is canceling our Welcome Committee due to duplication of information the Newcomers meetings and offi ce offer on a regular basis. For over fi ve years, the Welcome Committee has delivered packets of SVE information to new residents and welcomed them to our community. They have served a good purpose, but we feel that Newcomers monthly meetings and tours of our facility are serving the same purpose. A BIG thank you to the volunteers who generously served on the committee. They are: Sharon Schwarz (chairperson), Herb and Alice Henderson, Gus and Bob Hippe, Louise Grove, Keney Foster, and Darrell and Winn Thompson.

Also a special thank you to the following clubs who have generously donated money to our general fund and specifi c projects. They are: Tennis Club:$5000 to the general fund; Sun Runners RV Club: $1615 toward lighting at the Palo Verde parking lot; Bingo Concession: $300 toward the new sound system in the Oakwood Room; Softball Club: $650 toward a new AED for the ball fi eld area; the on-going Bingo and winter pancake breakfasts: many $$$! Club donations help keep our annual dues down and pay for improvements, so thank you to all the Clubs who help with our fi nancial needs!

Best wishes to all who are leaving for the summer. Have a safe and enjoyable time and hurry back. Be sure to get a caretaker for your property and check out at the offi ce. We will take good care of your village which will look even better when you return. For those of us who stay, we will enjoy the many summer activities and each other’s company!

SECURITY KORNEREd Malone

Beware of Scams. The most recent scams are Home sales scam. Subject visits a realtor, gets a business card

and leaves. Subject then goes to a property with a for sale sign, walks up to the door and shows the card as a way of introduction and asks to view. Subject has then been allowed to walk though the home. Victims report the theft of jewelry and

wallets. DO NOT let any strangers into your home.

Require Salesperson to accompany all prospects. Leave nothing in plain sight. Keep all valuables locked up. Always accompany visitors through the home.Beware of Home Repair Scam. Subject will come to door

offering to do repair work, asks for money before starting work. Once money is paid no work is completed.

Never do business with anyone who comes to your door uninvited.

Call the offi ce to report door-to-door activity.Never pay any money before work is completed.Check with the AZ Registrar of Contractors for license, 602-

TIME? Let’s keep our garage doors closed. We don’t want to give them easy access.

For those of you heading north, please fi ll out the form in the offi ce. Have a safe trip and a great summer. See you in the fall. Be happy, be safe be careful.

GOLF CONDO II Wanda Katzman

Here I am again on my patio as I write. The golf course and the weather just could not be anymore perfect . It is 85 degrees, a soft warm breeze ruffl es the leaves of a tree in front of me. The stately pine trees stand sturdily with less needles each year but they still make music with the wind. Life could not be much better for this writer.

Some of the neighbors are missing this day as they travel to their summer homes.

The social committee for our street outdid themselves again with the last party. New residents were introduced. We always have plenty of delicious food and Laguna Azul proves again that our residents are a happy friendly group. The committee announced that the next party will be November 16 in the auditorium.

We are sad today to learn of the death of a former resident, Bob Kane, who had moved to Acanthus street, passed away suddenly. Not many left of us original residents who moved in when the condo’s were built in 1992 for the phase 1. We are happy though to see new younger faces moving in around us to keep the friendliness, young attitudes and cooperation going on Laguna Azul.

Our board advises all residents to remove anything on patio walls, our name signs over garage doors, and remember to make it possible for painters to open security door so as to paint the front door. The painters will be coming soon to rejuvenate the outside of our condos.

At our last block watch, Terri Teten from the police department advised all residents remaining in summer here to be extra observant of strangers attempting to enter a condo. She stated that this would be a perfect time for burglars to attempt this, as we will have new people around painting. The few of us who choose to “enjoy” the Arizona summer here will keep a watchful eye.

Those of you leaving until fall will “miss all the fun” but do look forward to fi nding a new attractive community with new color trim when you return.

Joan Rourke When this appears in the Outlook we

will be home in Michigan. The past winter season has gone by fast, thanks to all the areas of involvement here at SVE. Great shows, golfi ng, tennis or whatever turns you on is a factor in time fl ying by.

• Lots of important dates for this month. May 5th is Cinco de Mayo which commemorates the victory of Mexican militia over the French at The Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is not Mexican Independence Day which comes in September.

• Mothers Day comes on the 9th this year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, though not the same day or the same way. In our country it was fi rst recognized as a holiday in 1914.

• May 21st recalls the historic 33½ hour fl ight of Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris France in 1927.

• On May 27th , when the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is now recognized as a symbol of San Francisco and California,

• Memorial Day (formerly Decoration day) falls on May 30th and commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service. It was fi rst enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War.

• Did you ever notice that are no clocks in La Vegas gambling casinos?

• Please note that I am not overweight, I am simply a nutritional overachiever!

• Sage advice given freely - If you must choose between two evils, chose the one that you’ve never tried before.

• Who was the greatest fi nancier in the Bible? Noah. He was fl oating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation. (No groans, please).

• “Guiness Book of Records” holds the record for being the book most often stolen from public libraries. Wonder if they will put this in the book? A dubious distinction.

• Did you know that peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite?

• FYI for you golfers - There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.

• A Russian woman gave birth to 69 children from 1725 to 1765. Before you ask how, there were 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets! Yep, that adds up to 69.

• Advice to pilots in training - always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you make.

• My Mother taught me to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder to fi nd any.

• Sex is hereditary. If your parents never had it, you won’t either.

• Quotable quote for this month: Be wary of the man who urges an action in which he himself incurs no risk. Joaquin de Setanti

LIBRARY NEWS

MICHAEL’S FAIRWAY GRILLE

Pancake Breakfast

THE TIME IS NOW!

Ed MaloneWe did it! Another

successful season of serving the fi nest pancakes and sausages in the village. In spite of needing to cancel the October breakfast because of equipment problems, we still contributed $7,775.00 to SVE. Thanks to all of you who had breakfast with us

and a SPECIAL thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers. You really are unsung heros.

In March we had a pizza party for the “kool” crew and took the time to recognize a pair of our volunteers. We presented the fi rst ever “Golden Spatula” award to Pat and Jerry Little who are retiring after 20 years

fl ipping pancakes and serving sausages. We will miss you next season.

By the way, we hope all you “SPECIAL” volunteers will be back in the fall. We will also be glad to have some new folks join us in October.

Remember: Be happy, be safe and have fun.

Loretta WellmanOur Summer Volunteer meeting was held

in April. We still have need for summer volunteers to help keep our library in good condition. Anyone who enjoys reading that could donate a few hours a week to help us would be greatly appreciated. Please call one of the Library Committee members listed in the Activities section of the Outlook.

At our April meeting, we decided to add extra shelving to the existing cabinets allowing us to have more shelf space for our ever expanding paperback collection. It seems whenever we move books around to add more space, it has to be done again. This is a good thing in that we always encourage more books. The more variety we have, the better choice is available.

Please come in and fi nd a book to read. And as a reminder, when you fi nish reading, please return the book (or other media) for others to enjoy.

A book I’d recommend is “Loving Frank” by Nancy Horan. Anyone who has been to Taliesin West and was fascinated with Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture would be interested in knowing more about the man. This is a story of the love affair between Mamah Cheney, a mother of two children and Frank Lloyd Wright, a father of six children. They shocked Chicago and the world when they left their families and moved to Europe. The ending of this story based on fact was very surprising but the evolving story itself was interesting.

If you haven’t purchased your “BRICK” for our Donor Wall yet, be sure you do it as soon as possible. Three years ago, on April 12, 2007 the fi rst brick was sold. Now we are entering our fi nal stage and soon all available spaces will be fi lled and our wall completed!

Will your name be on the wall? The “Buy A Brick” fundraiser was the

second fundraiser that was started to collect additional revenue to make it possible to

help pay for the “Palo Verde Building”. This was done without any special assessments. Proud? Yes we are!

Many residents supported our vision and made it a reality! You too can be part of this dream by buying a brick that will become a permanent part of SVE history, and an inspiration to those who follow us.

Please pick up a form in our association offi ce, or contact Betty Elm, 986-6974.

When you have had a delicious meal at The Fairway Grille and wished for the recipe, we have a

solution for you. From time to time Chef Chris has agreed to give us one of his recipes for publication in

the Outlook. This month we have one we liked and thought you would enjoy too.

GREEN CHILI BEEF5 lbs ½ in. diced New York Strip1 #6 can green chilis1 tbl chopped garlic1 tsp cumin 1 large onion, diced2 large tomatoes, dicedSalt and pepper to tasteIn a crock put, combine all ingredients. Set on high for

CERAMIC CLUBWanda Katzman

The ceramic club members gathered to enjoy a “summer” picnic on March 26 in the ceramic room. Twenty members welcomed the new board and enjoyed the hot dogs, chips and cookies. In September the members will be in charge of the “big clean” day in our room.

Debbie will continue classes on Monday and Tuesday mornings through the summer.

Today the board wishes those leaving for the summer a happy and safe season away from us, but do hurry back to class when you return.

COMPUTER CLUB BITS AND BYTESSVE Lapidary/Silversmith Club

Paul Thovson Lapidary shop activity is winding down, but not stopping

for the summer months. From May 3rd to Oct 4th shop hours will cut back to Mon, Wed, & Fri, 8 – 11 AM.

There will be a full schedule of activities and assistance available for all types of lapidary work so come on in and work on some projects. We will be doing some maintenance on equipment and rearranging work & storage areas so that we can make the best use of the limited space we have. New and old members were especially active this past year and many new skills were mastered.

Our jewelry repair service for SVE residents more than doubled this past year. Club members can do most basic and intermediate type repairs. This is usually about a 50% savings for most types of repair. Bring your jewelry in and we will let you know if it can be repaired. We also have jewelry for sale that was made by club members.

For all of the SVE winter visitors, have a safe journey to your other home and we will see you in the fall.

RED HAT SOCIETYShirley Miller

Dazzling Desert Dolls’ March 24 meeting hosted by Group 4 was beautifully done with an Easter theme. To accompany our tea, we had delicious choices of what you would have at an Easter brunch.

We had one guest, a prospective member, and 45 members present. Ruth Weston, our leader stressed wearing RED Hats and PURPLE attire. We are all about fun, but also about Red Hats.

Birthdays and outings were reported, as were names of members having health issues. Announcements of upcoming SVE events was made, and the name tags were delivered for those needing them. Several fun items were read, and a quiz time ended our meeting.

Many of our members are heading back to their summer homes, but we continue to meet monthly. We welcome any guests or new members…just bring a cup, teabag, notepaper and pen.

SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB NEWS

Carleton MooreBy the time you read this in May it may be too hot

to play. We are happy to have many new players who joined our group this year. So see you all in the Fall! We appreciated the efforts of members who kept the boards in good shape and provided the Saturday refreshments!

Our individual championship singles tournament was won by Anita Lakey. Thanks to all who played. At our annual meeting Karen Lewis was elected president to succeed Mary Casale who deserves big thanks for her efforts over the past several years.

Please see our bulletin board on the shuffl eboard courts for more information. Our club president is Karen Lewis at 380-4335.

This Show took a lot of work by a lot of people especially Luther Ness and Rob Bleckinger, who went to various photo shows in the area for ideas. I want to thank all of the people who put together the easels and those, who submitted the many great pictures. Most of all, a thank you to the members and residents of SVE, who came to the Show and voted for these wonderful pictures. Our photo special interest group has grown under the leadership of Curt Bellin and we are looking forward to next season, learning how to take and edit pictures.

Our Help Fix It Group, which offers to fi x your computers on Tuesday afternoons, has been a big help to us all.

Katie Gertz’s class on Windows 7

was well attended and all her students have learned a lot about this new operating system. Katie also did the Mac Special Interest Group, which was much appreciated after years of interest. We hope to have Katie back next season.

The Slug group, which deals with the free operating system, Linux, meeting on two Tuesday nights in the Training Facility, has been a great group, covering several software programs which are free.

Thanks to all who worked hard to make this Club benefi cial to all of us. Next season we hope to have some members volunteer to help give presentations on software programs they use.

Keep checking our website while you are away, as it will still have some great information and Joe will be keeping it up while on vacation

SVE ACTIVE SINGLES

SUNRUNNERS RV CLUBMylla O’Dell

The March outing of the Sunrunners, hosted by Don and Del Clark and Arden and Carol Freeman, took place at the Royal Palm RV Resort in north Phoenix. It was an older park, but well maintained with beautiful facilities. We went over on Sunday afternoon and spent a lazy few hours until potluck time at the community recreation hall. As usual, there was a wonderful array of food, including lots of scrumptious desserts! That evening we had three tables competing for nickels in our rousing games of ’65’. There were lots of laughs, and friendly kibitzing among the players.

Monday morning we carpooled to the park-and-ride lot of the Metro Light Rail. We rode into Phoenix to the Heard Museum, where we had a guided tour of the highlights of the museum. We saw a beautiful exhibit of Hopi Katsina dolls (yes, you read that right – it’s “katsina”, not “kachina” as we have pronounced it all these years). Not only do we have fun, but we become smarter as members of the Sunrunners RV Club!! Another out-standing exhibit was the Arctic Spirit, which included lots of ornate carvings and interesting paintings by the inuit people of the north. We reboarded the train and went on to the Spaghetti Factory for lunch. We had our own room and enjoyed a good lunch. That evening, we had a fun social hour with more cards.

We began our last day of the outing with breakfast at “Kiss the Cook” restaurant in Glendale. Everybody who eats there gets a kiss – a Hersey’s kiss, that is. After breakfast, we had free time, so our hosts gave us a list of suggestions of things to do. Some went to various malls, some rested in their RV’s, and some went to the casino. One member (yours truly) spent a very profi table time there, winning over $1,000 on a quarter machine!! It was so exciting, and there was nobody around me I knew, so I had to hold it inside until I found the others! By the time we got back to the RV park to play card bingo, I felt I had won all I needed to for the weekend, so I let others win the bingo prizes!! Well, maybe I didn’t “let” them win, but I wasn’t too unhappy when I didn’t! For dinner that night we carpooled, to Marie Callender’s, followed by more games at the park.

We thank our hosts, the Clarks and Freemans, but especially the Freemans who, having sold their RV recently, drove over every day to take part in the activities and then home every night. We appreciate all their help and I speak for all the members when I say we hope they will fi nd another RV before long so they can take part in our upcoming outings. We will have an outing in April, and then not again until October. If interested in our club, please attend our fi rst meeting in the fall, which will be October 5, 2010, at 3:15 in the Mesa Verde Room. To all the RV’ers out there – “happy trails to you” until we meet again in the fall.

Billie PesekRains came, fl owers bloomed, weeds grew

- a sure sign of spring and time for us to say “so-long” to our winter residents. We celebrated with them by having our Annual Pizza Party. The pizza was delicious and clever table decorations only added to the occasion.

Our April Committee kept us busy with activities they planned. The members enjoyed “Hello Dolly” at Highland High School, Michael’s Fairway Grill for dinner and an afternoon of Bunco at the Mesa Verde Room. We thank them for their efforts.

The May Committee members are Joyce Pandrok, Ellie Ostrom and Virginia Stockton. They’ve planned the following events:

Sunday, May 2 - An Afternoon Tea in the Oakwood Room from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Cost is $5.00 to be paid at sign-up. Those that attended last year’s Tea say you’ll enjoy delicious pastries and have a delightful time. Contact Joyce Pandrok or Ellie Ostrom for

more information.Tuesday, May 18 - A Choir Concert at

Highland High School starting at 7:00 P.M. This is a free activity and we’ll meet in

the north parking lot to leave at 6:15 P.M. Driver’s fee is $1.00 Ellie Ostrom is contact person.

Thursday, May 27 - Lunch is planned at A. J. Cafe in the historical San Marcos Hotel in

Chandler at 1:00 P.M. There will be separate checks plus tax and tip.

You can meet for carpooling by 12:15 P.M. in the north parking lot. and

driver’s fee is $2.00. Call Virginia Stockton for more information. The Sunshine Person for May is

Arlene Voit. Please give her a call if you know of any member needing a card.

The Singles Club is open to all who are alone in SVE and wish to meet new friends. Every Wednesday we have a short meeting and we play cards and games. Come and check us out.

We wish our members who are leaving a safe trip and a great summer!

SVE GENEALOGYJean McLane

Can’t believe the time fl ies so fast. Either we are having lots of fun, or just having fun planning trips with the family. I hope all plans include family research.

I’m looking forward to a class reunion in Montana in August then joining Spike and Kathy in their motor home for a

trip to the New England states and lots of grave searching, picture taking and hopefully lots of new information. My family came into New York while Doc’s came into the Nova Scotia area. Will be a fun time sight seeing, researching and eating sea food.

Our meetings will continue May and June with no special programs planed so everyone help us out. Plan on giving a program on your own research or telling other stories you have heard. We will have a vote at the next meeting if we take July, August and September off. I will be gone most of that time. Diane will be heading north for awhile but Gene will be around.

Summer trips can be planned to the state library if anyone is interested but with so much material available here in Mesa you might fi nd everything you need close to home. Another reminder for those traveling, plan your trips and get your paperwork ready to travel. If you have time, check ahead for times and days libraries, etc., are open. Be sure to keep records of places visited, materials found and just where they were found to avoid repeat trips. When copying pages from books be sure to copy cover pages, etc.

We meet the 1st Wednesday of each month at 8:45 on the patio of the Mesa Verde Room and carpool to the FHL for a day of research. The 3rd Wednesday we meet at 9:00 AM to hear our program. Sunland StitchersFerne Cohen

We had a very busy March and April but as of the middle of April most of our winter visitors have gone north to their summer homes.

Our quilt show in March was a huge success. A big thank you goes out to all the stitchers who worked on the quilt show and of course to their husbands as well.

After the quilt show and craft sale we delivered charity quilts to House of Refuge, Banner Hospital and Hospice. We also donated an Elna European Transfurma Geneva sewing machine to the Gilbert Museum. This was donated to us by Jan Rasmussen. There were three quilts raffl ed off and were won by: Rosemary Braumberger, Mary Alice Jensen and Delores Stobushi.

Freda Klein has moved home and is fi nally joining us when she can. It’s wonderful having her back with us. Also a get-well to Adrienne Landers who has been ill.

In March we had a Spring Fling Luncheon and Trunk Show given by Karen Weaver. This was enjoyed by all. On April 7th & 14th Vera Smith gave a class on Borders are Square placemats. On April 5th twelve of us went on a Shop Hop and out to lunch. Some of the ladies bought their fabric for the class given by Vera. On April 21st there was a Discharge Dying Class given by Vera Smith. This was very informative and interesting.

Hope everyone has a pleasant and safe summer.

SVE FHE(Family Home Evening Group)

Darlene RichOur monthly meeting for May will be on May 10th, the

usual second Monday, at 6:00 pm in the Mesa Verde Room. Anyone who wishes to join us is invited to participate. If you would like to attend, please call Darlene Rich, 986-6985 so that we may have a more accurate count of tables to set.

Our meal is almost always a potluck, although sometimes we have a special theme. May will be a standard potluck. Please bring enough to serve about 10 to 12 people of whatever you would like to prepare. This method results in some great meals and opportunities to sample new and interesting dishes. Place settings are furnished.

We have lots of different types of programs from theme nights such as our Latin American Fiesta, to game nights or just good entertainers. Last month we had a really great women’s singing group who really “wowed” us. Our May evening will also be very interesting. We are fortunate to have Vickie Brisco of our community presenting a program. She was, for many years, a school teacher for the dependents of American military families in Japan, and will be telling us all she learned about the culture and customs she found in that part of the world. For those of you who know Vickie, you can imagine it will be lots of fun and very interesting. You will be glad you attended, and we look forward to seeing you there.

TRAILBLAZERS Sharon BatcherTrailblazers hiking and walking groups will resume activities the

week of Nov 1, 2010.

DOGS ‘R USMichelyn Emelle

Dogs ‘R Us fi rst annual Pet Fair was a barking success! The very Bow Wow event on Saturday February 20 began at ten a.m. with Pet Blessings given by Father Tim. Paws a plenty of all shapes and sizes enjoyed the Fair with their two legged companions despite a light rain. Dog activities, grilled burgers, door prizes, and the Maricopa Pet RV (Adoption Center on wheels) were part of the tail wagging festivities. Woof! Using a portion of the profi ts from the Pet Fair, Carole Duncan, the treasurer of Dogs ‘R Us, presented a $300 check to Cassandra Durkin of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control at the Dogs ‘R Us March meeting.

Dogs ‘R Us is currently planning Paws for the Cause, happening in the Fall.

Paws for the Cause will raise money for the animals at the shelter and is accepting donations. Newspapers, sheets, puppy formula, and pet foods are also needed.

Dogs ‘R Us Paws for the Cause will have a Mobile Vaccination Clinic right here at SVE offering FREE Vaccinations, plus the purchase of Dog Licenses and ID Pet Chipping for a fee.

We encourage all animal lovers of SVE to participate, asking you to take time for Paws for the Cause. For additional information click Club and Amenities on the

Sunland Village East Homeowners web site to fi nd Dogs ‘R Us.

WOOD SHOP NEWS

Earl BurdickThe Wood Shop is no longer as busy a beehive. Our

winter visitors are now starting to go to their summer homes. Beginning April 1st hours were reduced to mornings only, fi ve days a week. Later this summer the hours will be 9 to 12 Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Wood Shop members are currently developing a plan to reduce the noise level. It is hard to carrying on a conversation when certain machines are running. The noise may also be damaging the ears of those who are in the shop for long periods.

Rather than having a craftsman of the month we have a “craftgroup” of the month. The featured project is a large computer desk and wall cabinets made for Darlene Rich, a village resident. There were so many different Wood Shop members that worked on the project that no one will be singled out.

SVE MEN’S GOLF NEWS

Alyn BrokkeThe Men’s Club completed their Club Championship

Tournament on March 15. Winners: 18 Hole Championship: Buddy Macdonald.

Flight 2: Frank Frost, Flight 3: Jerry Ryan, Flight 4: Richard Scocco & Doug Scott, Flight 5: Earl Obermiller.

9 Hole Championship: Ken ShannonPlans have now been fi nalized for the Brat Cookout on

April 20. Congratulations to Eric Henshall for a Hole in One on #18 on April 5, 2010, and to Kent Eicholtz for a Hole in One on #5 on March 27.

Would like to remind all members to check the bulletin board for more information in the Pro Shop.

Lona ChristoffersThe SVE Tennis Club held another

successful tournament with many Clubs represented. The fi rst day it was pouring rain and play was cancelled. Tuesday called for suspension of play in the afternoon that left the organizers scrambling for a new play schedule. The rest of the week was beautiful and by the fi nal matches on Sunday it was warm, bright and sunny.

Our congratulations go to our SVE winners: in the Championship round fi nals Toni Ledwidge/Di Klein took 1st place at the 3.0 level; Lois Krejci/Joyce Swenson were 2nd at the 4.0 level and Debbie Armenta/LinDa Stougard were 2nd at the 1.5 level.

In the consolation bracket fi nals Peggy Dronen/Pat Tollefsrud were 3rd at the 2.0 level; Andy Shepherd/Tom Grimes were 4th at the 1.5 level and Judy Surridge/Sue

Foster were 4th at the 2.0 level. There were some great games with many tie-breaker decisions.

Our hats are off to all the many volunteers who spent countless hours to make this tournament go smoothly in spite of the weather. And especially to RJ McGinnis, the tournament organizer, who so miraculously pulled together a fl awless tourney in spite of Mother Nature working against him!

The next week it was on to the Sunland Springs Village tournament. The weather was great all week and the tennis was fantastic. SVE was well represented and Jan Smith/Art Reil came through to win the 4.0 Consolation bracket! There was a lot of great play and all SVE teams can be proud of their efforts.

The Monte Vista Team Tournament was the fi nal competition. Congratulations to

our SVE 2.0 team played a tough Monte Vista team in the fi nals, and earned a 2nd Place silver medal and $20 each. The team consisted of Pat/Bob Tollefsrud, Sue/Harry Foster, Debbie Armenta, Bill Nykiforuk, Daryl Johnson, and Peggy Dronen.

Yeah SVE 2.0 team!!May is National Tennis Month. Jessica

Matthews, spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise, tells us the USTA is hosting block parties across the country during May, with free classes and family events. We can fi nd a party in our area and get info about adult classes for all levels at www.usta.com.

That’s it folks. The season is offi cially over and it’s practice, practice, practice throughout the summer. Have a safe and relaxing summer and we’ll “See you on the Courts” come October.

Having trouble staying motivated with your exercise program? “Finding an exercise partner increases your motivation to exercise and increases the likelihood that each of you will achieve your fi tness goal(s),” said Gregory Florez, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise, a nonprofi t fi tness

group. Having support

mechanisms, like classes, a personal trainer, or a partner can be a huge motivator. Most people don’t like to exercise or at least don’t look forward to it. But they do like the benefi ts. “Nine-tenths of the struggle is just showing up. That’s why

having a partner can be so benefi cial. “There’s joint accountability,” Florez said. On those days when you feel tired or something comes up, you have a spouse, co-worker, personal trainer -- someone-- to be your stimulator and to keep you going. Having an exercise partner with similar goals

goes along way to ensuring goal achievement.

Susan Shifman is a Personal Trainer at SVE. She also teaches Beginning Yoga (Wednesday’s 4 – 5pm,) and Yogilates (Thursdays 9 – 10am). Both classes are held in the Oakwood Room. Contact Susan at 480-861-7781.

Chuck ThompsonDean Jacula and Ray

Kolot represented SVE in the 2009-2010 All-Star Cactus League competition. Teams from ten valley communities played in the season-long competition.

Dean and Ray won approximately 70 percent of all their games played during the season. After the nine rounds of play, they fi nished in fi rst place. Congratulations to Dean and Ray for bringing the “All Star” plaque to Sunland Village East.
