Set Yourself Apart Fromthe Job Seeking Crowd

Whether you are out of work,working at a dead end job, toilingat a job you hate, or just ready fora change, a slow economy is noreason to give up. By followingthese tips, you will set yourselfapart from the crowd and get thatdream job sooner rather than later.

Prepare a winning resume.Resumes aren’t just for white-collar jobs. Entry level jobapplicants, blue collar workers,and summer job seekers can setthemselves apart with goodresumes. Your resume’s onlypurpose is to get you an interview,so include only items designed todo that. Online resumes beginwith short titles written to makereaders want to read further. Usethe title to communicate your bestqualification and your careerobjective.

If you include an Objectivesection, use it to tell who you areand where you are goingprofessionally. Tell what you willdo for an employer, not what youwant them to do for you. Write adifferent objective for each careerpath you are considering.When writing your job history,headline your qualifications, notyour former employers’ names. Itis vitally important that you usethe keywords of your industry inyour resume. Don’t list your jobduties; instead, in active voice,communicate your achievements.Be honest, interesting, andspecific.

Do not put anything negative oreven neutral in a resume. Ifsomething doesn’t matter in thejob you are seeking, don’t includeit. Proofread it, proofread it again,and then have others proofread it.Typographical and grammaticalerrors can be fatal. If your resumedoesn’t set you apart from theothers who may apply for the jobyou want, you haven’t finisheddrafting.

Finding potential employers.Get your resume to as manycontacts as possible—most jobsare found through contacts. Don’tlimit your job search to advertisedpositions—most jobs are filledwithout advertising. Identifybusinesses you would like to workfor and write a short letter to aperson you might work for sayingthat you are: 1) impressed withthe organization, 2) interested in ajob, 3) enclosing your resume, and4) stopping by on a particular daywithin the next week and hopethey’ll give you five minutes oftheir time to discuss possibleemployment and their ideas onopportunities in your field. If theorganization is out-of-town, tellthem you’d like to talk on thephone for 5 minutes on aparticular day.

Prepare for your interview.Proper interview preparation iscritical. Read everything you canabout the employer and use it toform questions. Prepare two orthree specific questions to ask atthe interview. Find sampleinterview questions online anddevelop short answers to each.Ask someone to help you practiceinterviewing. Practice answeringquestions until you both agree that

your answers are near perfect. Askyour mock-interviewer to ask youa few difficult surprise questions.If you find sample answers tointerview questions, use them asexamples of good answers, butdon’t copy them.

The interview. Always dressnicely for the interview (and whenyou pick up an application). Weara coat and tie or a woman’sbusiness suit for interviews foroffice jobs. For a blue collar job,wear business casualclothes—slacks and a knit (Polo)shirt are fine. Cover tattoos andremove visible piercings (exceptfor women’s ears). When youmeet the interviewer, look them inthe eyes and give them a firmhandshake. Listen carefully.When necessary, ask them torepeat questions. Use theinformation you learned about theorganization in your answers, andask several of the specificquestions you developed about theorganization.

After the interview. Follow upthe interview with a typed thankyou note. You can email this, butsnail mail is usually better. Thankthe interviewer, express yourinterest in the job, explain brieflyhow you can help theorganization, and, if theinterviewer didn’t tell you aboutfollow-up, ask what you canexpect next. Few people sendnotes, so it sets you apart.

Job hunting is hard work. Workharder than those competing withyou for available positions.
