Greetings Church!

Build, Serve, Grow, is one of the most exciting and challenging projects that we haveshared at Manchaca UMC in many years. A church meeting was held on June 3rd to discussthe details of completed renovations and an outline of remaining renovations stillneeded. In short, we finished renovation to the main sanctuary in 2017. Now we turn ourfocus to the next priority on the BSG renovation list, the Family Life Center.

There were many valuable and heart-felt opinions shared during this meeting, both forimmediate renovation and delay of proposed renovations to the Family Life Center. Hereis a tally of the surveys provided on Sunday (6/3):

33–Start the FLC renovation in August, 201851–Delay the FLC renovation until sometime in 201916–No (write in votes)06–Conditional (write in votes to prioritize based on safety/money available)

Based on survey responses, from those in attendance, there is a clear consensus thatrenovation should not begin in 2018. While this is a small percentage of the totalcongregation, we believe it accurately reflects the opinion of our church at this time.

We are encouraged that many members of the congregation are in favor of futurerenovation. It is estimated that our entire, existing debt will be paid off within the nextyear. In the not too distant future, a Church Conference will be scheduled to reviewviable renovation options, taking into account our present budget and BSG pledges.

We did have two extended pledges and one new pledge offered in the last month. Theseadditional gifts of $18,320 brings our total BSG pledges to $566,024. “Every good gift andevery perfect gift is from...the Father.” James 1:17

My son and daughter recently introduced me toa video game. The game isn't new and hasbeen around awhile, but I'm just starting it.It's nothing like the arcade games I grew up

with. In this game, you wake up centuries later fromcryogenic hibernation in a post-apocalyptic world. You aregiven technology to help guide you which includes a blankmap of the area. As you journey on special missions,destinations appear on the map as outlined figures. Onceyou've reached the destination the outline is filled in. Until

you've reached the destination, there are no shortcuts to make the journey easier. Thejourney can be difficult as you encounter a strange assortment of animals, people andsituations. As you make your way from Point A to Point B, you discover places that showup on your map. In these places you discover people and resources that help you, or maychallenge you, along your journey. In literature and the arts, a "journey" often representslife. We go about our day to day routines, going from Point A to Point B, and as we journeywe experience life. Musician John Lennon is often credited with saying "Life is whathappens while you're busy making other plans." I don't think anyone can truly say that thelife they've experienced has gone exactly as they've planned it. The journey might beeasier if you could go directly from Point A to Point B, but there's so many experiences youwould miss. We are all on our own journeys. What a blessing it is that we can journey alongside each other knowing that, as we travel between our own Point A's and B's, we are partof a community of faith where we can share our experiences and find the resources to helpus along our journey. Sanctuary Choir Invited to Carnegie Hall The Sanctuary Choir recently received an invitation to join with members from otherchoirs around the country in a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City next May. Theinvitation was extended by Distinguish Concert International New York (DCINY) for their"...dedication to musical excellence." Members of the Sanctuary Choir will fly to New Yorkto spend time rehearsing with clinician Mary McDonald then present an evening concerton stage at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. Not all the Sanctuary Choir members will be ableto travel to New York to join in the concert. At this time there are six choir members andtwo family members planning to attend this special event. These choir members feelhonored to represent Manchaca UMC in this wonderful musical opportunity.

Summer of Service Each Sunday morning at Awaken Youth Fellowship, Middle and High school youth havegather for breakfast and a devotional in the youth room, and then work together to completea service project. So far we’ve been painting Room 3 (the Middle School Sunday schoolroom). Other projects we’ll complete this summer include: working on the school supplydrive, bagging up food in our Food Pantry, polishing hand bells, and VBS prep. Come joinus! Coming in July…Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times by Adam Hamilton

Besides being a birthday month for me, my brother and so many others, July has traditionally been known as a sabbath month, forexample when we take a break from regular meetings, enjoy a time of respite and recreation, even a time of doing things a littledifferently. In the first four weeks of July, Andy and I will be switching pulpits! It’s fun stuff and takes COURAGE!

In the month of July, I’ll be preaching a sermon series in the Sanctuary services based on Adam Hamilton’s book “Unafraid: Living withCourage and Hope in Uncertain Times.” You are invited to read along with the series. The book is available through Amazon in digital orhard copy. Humbly, I invite your prayers and support during this time. And don’t forget: 5th Sunday will be a combined service withSenior Pastor Andy preaching, July 29, 10:00 am. Holy Communion will be served. Also Noisy Offering by Children’s Ministry!Breakfast will be served at 8:30 that morning. You won’t want to miss out on this special day in the life of the church!

Movies with a Message

We invite families with kids ofall ages to come and watch freefamily movies on Tuesdayafternoons at 2:30 PM in ourFellowship Hall. We providepopcorn and water, chairs, and

lots of room where kids can lounge on the floor. Kids can bringtheir own pillows and blankets. A short Bible lesson followseach movie. Movies with a Message is open to the community,so please invite your friends and neighbors! Noisy Offering July has a 5th Sunday, so our children will be raisingmoney for their mission projects throughout the year. DuringChildren's Time, the children will come around with their littlemetal buckets to collect your spare change. This money goestoward all of the service projects our children completethroughout the year, including making manna bags. A portionof July's offering willsupplement our schoolsupplies as needed andour VBS Mission project- Clean Water for Flint.

Reading at Marbridge Our Caring Kids have been traveling to Marbridge onWednesday mornings this summer to read to and with theresidents. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Update Our Caring Kids hosted lemonade stands on Sunday, June3 to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand foundation. Withyour help, the children raised $368.33 by selling cookies and

VBS Support VBS is only successful with 100% participation from the church! We still haveseveral ways that you can support our VBS ministry.

1. Playground Supervisor: We are looking for someone willing to be SafetyCertified through the Rio Texas conference (about 3 hours of training) tohelp supervise the playground during VBS (9:20-11:50 am). This isperfect for someone who doesn’t mind the heat! If you are interested,please contact Kim!

2. Playground Greeter: We still need Safety Certified adults who can welcome families for early drop off (7:45-8:45 am).3. Prayer Team: We need a team of at least 16 people to pray for our children and leaders by name each day during VBS!4. Donate Scholarship Money or Items: Each scholarship is $20. We’ve had 12 children ask for scholarships so far, but we

usually end up giving scholarships to about 20-25 children. Make scholarship checks out to MUMC with “VBS scholarship”in the memo line. See our updated “Wish” and “Borrow” lists for items needed.

5. Donate to our VBS Mission Project! Our children will be raising money to help Flint residents receive clean water. Comeby the week of VBS and drop off some change or dollar bills into the children’s collection bins. Or make a check outto MUMC with “VBS Mission – Flint” in the memo line!

Rio Texas Safety PolicyIn June 2017 the Rio Texas Conference passed a new Child, Youth, and Vulnerable AdultSafety Policy which went into full effect this June. This policy requires new background checksand training for all clergy, staff, and volunteers who work with children and youth, as well asadults with mental, physical or developmental disabilities. Completion of the 3-step applicationand training process certifies a person to work in ministry with these vulnerable people for 2years. Our local Safe Sanctuary policy is in the process of being updated to match or exceedthe minimum requirements in the Rio Texas policy. As of right now 12 people from ManchacaUMC have completed the process, and another 26 people are in the process. Thank you foryour commitment to keeping vulnerable populations safe in our care. School SuppliesIn July our children and youth will be raising money to purchase school supply kits and backpacks for up

to 15 children at Menchaca Elementary and to supply Paredes Middle School with prizes to use for attendanceincentives. The School Supply Kits range in price from $45-80 for each child! Please pick up one of thebackpacks from the displays in the hospitality area and Family Life Center and donate the amount written onthe backpack (ranging from $5-50). Checks can be made to MUMC with “school supplies” in the memo. Ifyou’d rather donate an item instead of money, we also need 15 new full-size backpacks in fun colors!

Open Hearts At our June meeting of Open Hearts, it was noted the July meeting would fall on July 3rd. Since a majority of our members attended

that evening, it was decided NOT to meet in July. We will be back together in August on the first Tuesday, August 7 @ 7 PM in Rm 8across from the Sanctuary.

With our meeting being on the 5th of June, our conversation naturally turned to Annual Conference, the Commission on a WayForward and how it will affect our loved ones and families. This is a heart-wrenching topic for any United Methodist. It just so happens,

most of our members belong to the UMC. It has always been difficult to feel at times that your friends and/or loved onesare not accepted. It is worse when it is insinuated that they are the cause of the split of the Church to which you havebelonged your entire life.

Open Hearts will continue to support anyone who needs to share their hurts and concerns. GriefShare–Loss of a SpouseIn early August, 2018, a new GriefShare kit titled "Loss of a Spouse"will be released by The Church

Initiative Group, Inc. (producers of MUMC’s current GriefShare program). MUMC has preordered the programmaterials and we plan to offer a session prior to our next scheduled Grief Share cycle in September.

We will meet once for a 2 hour session. It will be facilitated by persons that have experienced the loss ofa spouse. The program consists of a short video, a participant guide for note taking; followed by a short discussion among the groupabout the video. The participant guide is for your use and to keep for further reflection.

The Coloring Café 2018 Summer Schedule!! For the months of July and August, the Coloring Café will meet every 1st and 3rd Mondays! We meetin the Parlor at MUMC (east side of the main building). Our doors open at 10:00 a.m. and close aroundNoon or 1 p.m. depending on participation. Everyone can come and go as you please. Important! Every member and friend of Manchaca UMC can now view their contributions to the churchon their personal computer through our new Shelby Church Management Software. In an effort toreduce paper use, the church will not be mailing quarterly giving statements.

But please contact the church office if… 1) you have NOT received your login information for theShelby system, or need help using the system. 2) If you would like to receive a paper copy ofyour contributions.The church will mail out yearly giving statements at the end of 2018.

Honoring Linda… after faithfully serving our churchfamily as Office Manager for over 25 years, Linda Crailhas retired from her position. We invite everyone to cometo the FLC on July 1 during the Sunday School hour(9:45am to 10:45am) to help celebrate Linda’s ministryand service to our church family. Dear Church Family,

I have several items to share in my July newsletterarticle. I first want to thank you for allowing me to serve asyour pastor for another year. Rosie and I are blessed andhonored to serve the kingdom here at Manchaca UMC. We’ve both been appointed by our bishop for the next year.

I am grateful and honored to walk with all of you in faith! And just areminder of my cell phone number: 830-203-0881. I am here to serve youand your family. Please use this number to reach me anytime. I also wanted to welcome some new members to our church family. Wehope to be more faithful in the future with sharing the names and picturesof our newest members! On June 3, we welcomed Chester Eitze, SharonHowell, and Micky Caldwell. (pictured left to right below) They transferredtheir membership from Faith UMC. And finally worship plans for July…Pastor Rosie and I will be swapping pulpitsJuly 1 through the 22nd. She will lead bothsanctuary services as I lead the Life on theRoad service. July 29 is our next 5th

Sunday. We will have a potluck breakfast

starting at 8:30am in the FLC and only 1worship service that morning at 10am inthe sanctuary.
