Greetings from Chicago! This week
has been an OMG week. I haven’t
heard a final count but I think there
are about 40,000 Lions here at conven-
tion celebrating 100 years of our or-
ganization. Today about half of those
Lions paraded down State Street. The
group from California stood in line for
2 hours waiting for our chance to
march down the street to the music of
a high school band from Wisconsin.
The costumes from other countries
were gorgeous, spirits were high, and
I think Chicago was impressed.
We have had many inspirational
speakers and have met loads of new
Lion friends from around the world. I
attended the DGE Seminar and you
will be pleased to hear that I passed
the course and can now officially be
sworn in as your new District Gover-
nor. I have so many ideas about
things I wish to accomplish this year,
but I can only do it with your help.
Our new International President talks
about the Power of We. And he is so
right. Alone we accomplish a little,
but together we can do so much.
When we gather in Lakehead in July
for our Transitional District Meeting I
will share with you the new vision of
Lions Clubs International and the
LCI Forward Plan. There are many
people in our communities who need
to be served and the Lions are here to
do it. Join me in District 4C1 as we
move forward into the second 100 year
of Lions and make this year the foun-
dation on which we build our future.
I am excited to start my club visita-
tions this month and I look forward to
meeting all of you and putting our
heads together to make our District
the best in California. To be honest, I
already think we are the best, but we
can find more ways to serve. This is
what Lions do, right? We Serve!
I would love to tell you more, but I am
so tired after my long walk and tomor-
row morning we start our convention
meetings. I must get to bed. Lynn
and I miss home and all of you and
cant wait to get back. See you soon.

Leading Lions—Direction
Where are you taking your Lions Life? Leadership is not for those who go along for the
ride. You either have to be driving or supporting your leader with partnership and a pas-
sion for service. A leader is always trying to find ways to improve themselves, their fellow
officers and club members.
We are at the point for Club elections and the opportunity to step into new and exciting
challenges. What would you like to do or have you been asked to do. Those who ask you
to take on a roll are complimenting you. They want you to fill a position you are ready for.
At the coming District 4-C1 Convention, your club delegates will be voting for persons to
fill the district level leadership positions, as well as making decisions on budget and con-
stitutional issues. I encourage each of your club boards and memberships to provide di-
rection to your delegates. They should not have to make these decisions themselves.
We are all searching for direction in some way. What should I do? How can I help? Who
can I help? Who can we offer service? I recommend that you either be a helper or ask for
help in getting there. Your leadership can both use your help and want to help you find
your own direction.

July, a new year starts for Lions all over the world. Our next District Governors will be installed in
Chicago on July 4th. Many clubs have already installed new club officers and this month will see
many more installations. Our own district will be installing the new governor team July 15 and 16 at
Lakehead. Plan to attend in a show of support. These new officers have volunteered to step up to
the plate to serve you, the members of Lions International. Our whole purpose is to see that your
club and its members have all the support and help that you need to accomplish the goals that you
have set for the coming year.
There are new programs being rolled out at the Chicago Convention that will help all of us be better
connected. The biggest is the new MyLion App. This new technology will be explained at the up-
coming cabinet meeting. It is hoped that by using this technology that we can communicate even
better and faster with Lions all over the world. Clubs can more easily partner up with other clubs
across the globe to better serve those in need. It is hoped that this application will encourage wom-
en, families and young people to see that Lions are forward thinking and have members needs at
the forefront.
My goal is to get out and visit as many clubs and activities that I can this coming year. Pilots like to
do a lot of “hangar talk”, it allows us to share experiences and stories and to learn from situations
that have not turned out so well. I hope to be able to just sit around and listen and learn so that I
can better understand how your clubs serve and how we might help smooth the air for you if need-
ed. Rough air in the heat is not as pleasurable as an early morning flight in cool, calm air. I wish
you all could have that wonderful experience, there is nothing in this world like it.

GRIP IT AND RIP IT!
Well a New Year of Lionism is upon us. I am looking forward to serving with all of
you wonderful Lions of District 4-C1. Everyone should be relishing the recent
“retirement” of the District Tail Twister, as I can torment you no more.
I am anticipating a fabulous year with DG Marianne at the helm of our ship. I do be-
lieve this will be a fun filled productive year. I would like to remind everyone that DG
Marianne, 1VDG Sue and I are here to serve ALL of the Lions of 4-C1. We would
like to grow participation in District events and the reasons are twofold: 1) We want
to get to know ALL of you and 2) Hearing from you in person about the needs and
desires for you and your clubs helps us serve you better.
As I am an avid golfer, an adage that comes to mind is that we need to “grip it and
rip it” in our service of our communities. For those of you that know me, you imme-
diately understand the reference…. For those of you that don’t know me, I can bash
a golf ball a considerable distance (for a girl, tee hee).
There is a sea of change coming with the new GST position that DG Marianne will
be learning a lot more about in the coming months. I am anticipating great things
from our District and take great pride in representing you at the Multiple District.
Thank you for your time and support in the upcoming Lion year and I sincerely look
forward to getting to know and serve each of you in the year ahead. Keep on Swing-
ing!!!

The Changing of the Guard
District Governor Elect Marianne Keesee, who, as I write this, is back in Chicago for the International Convention where she will be sworn in as District Gover-nor, asked me to take the reins as Global Leadership Team Coordinator for our District. Our good friend Lion Mike Ferrier has held this position for the last three years and is stepping down as of June 30th after doing a stellar job of fill-ing this position. The basic portion of the duties of the District’s GLT Coordinator is to help iden-tify and provide training for District leaders and, probably more importantly, future leaders. There are many of you Lions in our District that have great po-tential as future Club Presidents, or Zone Chairs and Region Chairs. Some might even one day aspire to become Vice District Governors and my job will be to help you along this path and provide the training that will help the jump to higher positions not seem so daunting. Lions Clubs International has announced they are reworking the GLT and GMT positions and also creating the new Global Service Team position, all three of which will now be a part of the Global Action Team. These changes will be an-nounced and provided to us after the close of the International Convention in Chicago on July 4, 2017. This new Global Action Team will be chaired by Past In-ternational President Dr. Wing-Kun Tam. This will all be very interesting, and I will be getting back to you on how the new program and changes will work. In the meantime, I am in the District Directory, so if you have questions or need help please let me know and I will do my best to help or provide information. PDG Aron Whealy [email protected]

KNIGHTS CORNER by PDG Larry Marcum
What did we do on our summer vacation you ask? We went to Ivy Green! Where, you ask? Ivy Green in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Still wondering? Ivy Green was the name given to a 640 acre farm by a man in the early 1800’s who happened to be the grandfather of Helen Keller, and Ivy Green today is a national historical destination which was a dream come true for Lion Ida and I to visit. The original two story home is wonderfully preserved to all to tour. The furnishings in the home are 85% original items from the days of Helen’s childhood growing up there. The docent did a wonder-ful job of taking us to each room of the house, taking us back in time with the descriptive stories of what took place during the years made famous by the movie “The Miracle Worker”. We were mes-merized by what life must have been like for the Keller family as they struggled with how to find help for Helen. Two very special stops on the tour was when the docent unlocked the guard fence at the entrance of the downstairs master bedroom and Helen’s bedroom upstairs. And then the small cottage where the furnishings are 100% original where Anne Sullivan taught Helen to learn to be what she be-came. I was given the privilege of going in to these rooms and actually touching and exploring the furnishings that were actually Helen’s. One of the very special moments was to visit the famous water pump, Yes, the hand pump where Anne broke through to Helen is still there behind the house. As we all know, Lion Ida has taken on Helen’s life and story as a passion over the years, and we have a photo of Ida at the pump, touching it and working the handle, a very special moment. The first evening that we were there we attended an outdoor performance of the play “The Miracle Worker” on the 10 acre grounds. The play is performed each Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer by actors who volunteer their time to bring this incredible story alive. As we sat watch-ing the play with our emotions being tugged at, lightening bugs were present to delight Ida’s eyes. Also very special was that when we arrived at the gate for the play, we were greeted by Lions in vests who volunteer their time there. They told us about a special path on the grounds that is paved with red bricks with the names of Lions and/or their club name for a donation of $100 which helps support Ivy Green to continue to exist. At the end of the path is an ongoing video playing of the fa-miliar re-enactment of Helen giving her speech at our Lions International convention in Cedar Point, Ohio in 1925. We were so moved by the experience of visiting Ivy Green and will always cherish the memories. I
am once again reading Helen’s autobiography “The Story of My Life” and I encourage you to do the same.

SUBJECT TO CHANGE
14 District 4-C1 Information To all District 4 – C 1 Lions,
I wanted to share a unique opportunity to participate on a committee that serves at the state level. This
committee position is an Area 1, which includes our District as well as C 5 (Sacramento area) and A 1
(Modesto area).
The open position is with the Convention Management Committee. If you like to put together events,
and work with a team of Lions to have things go smoothly, then this committee may be the ticket for
you. Unlike most open California-wide committee positions, the commitment would only be for 2
years. As an extra bonus, you would not be assuming the Chair position the following year. How fun
would it be part of the preparations for the 2018 MD-4 Convention in San Diego! There is a commit-
ment to attend the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Council of Governors meetings, which may seem excessive, but is
worth the time to make the California Lions Convention a success. Those of you who were able to at-
tend the Convention held in Redding in February saw the benefits of careful planning.
If interested in this position or if you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me
either by email at [email protected] or by calling my home phone at 530 934 5898 or cell phone
at 530 518 7993. Don’t be afraid that you aren’t a “mucky muck” to be considered for this position.
New ideas and approaches are sought and valued.
Yours in Lionism,

This classic tale, in which a Kansas farm girl
travels over the rainbow to discover the magi-
cal power of home, has been entertaining audi-
ences for generations. Come with us as Doro-
thy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man and the
Cowardly Lion begin their quest in search of
the mighty Wizard of Oz who has the power to
send her home and grant her friends “a brain”,
“a heart” and “courage”! They will find them-
selves in trouble more than once on their jour-
ney, but ultimately find they had everything
they needed all along. This classic musical has
all of your favorite songs from the movie.
