M ost people know that automatic defragmentationis the most effective way to maximize system per-formance and reliability. But can an automatic

defragmenter actually increase performance beyond whatthe system could do when it was new? The developers ofDiskeeper, the Number One Automatic Defragmenter™, havedeveloped a way to do just that.

The new technology, calledIntelligent File Access Accelera-tion Sequencing Technology(I-FAAST), is the first disk per-formance calibration technol-ogy that uses real data abouteach individual disk’s perform-ance to make intelligent deci-sions that speed up fileaccess. While this may soundrelatively straightforward, theintricacies of the interactionbetween the logical drive andthe physical drive make it any-thing but.

A common misperception isthat the logical drive layout (howthe operating system sees diskvolumes) corresponds to thephysical drive layout (how thecontroller hardware sees the actual drive). Years ago, a theoryarose that by making some general assumptions about driveperformance and placing data in certain logical locations, onecould approximate physical locations that would optimizeaccess speeds.

The truth is that the relationship between physical and logi-cal is much more complex, and assumptions about how adrive should perform aren’t necessarily accurate (especiallywhen one is dealing with multi-drive arrays [RAIDs] or driveswith multiple partitions). With today’s large, complex drives, you simply can’t increase performance by guessing.

Diskeeper Corporation developers delved into the matter, taking advantage of the advanced technologies alreadydeveloped for Diskeeper and their unparalleled knowledgeof the interaction between OS and disk drive. Their goal was

a technology that not only made intelligent decisions basedon real-world data, but could be fully integrated withDiskeeper and would uphold its underlying values: Dataintegrity, low resource overhead, and (of course) a signifi-cant speed benefit. The concept of disk performance cali-bration technology — I-FAAST — was the fruit of their labors.

Here, in a nutshell, is howI-FAAST is integrated intoDiskeeper:

1. After installation, Disk-eeper runs specially engi-neered benchmarks on thedisk volumes to learn theirperformance characteristics.

2. Diskeeper transparentlymonitors volumes on an ongo-ing automatic basis to main-tain performance benefits.

3. I-FAAST processing is inte-grated with background defrag-mentation, so it’s virtuallytransparent to the user.

I-FAAST allows Diskeeper toadapt to changing situa-tions — so if the demands on

a given system change, Diskeeper automatically adjusts itsbehavior accordingly.

I-FAAST is vital for peak performance on all your servers andhigh-powered workstations.

With the introduction of I-FAAST, Diskeeper proves that auto-matic defragmentation really can accelerate a system’s per-formance to previously unattainable levels. And because it’sDiskeeper, doing so is easy — just “Set It and Forget It®.”

I-FAAST technology is available exclusively in Diskeeper 10 ProfessionalPremier Edition, Server Standard and Server Enterprise Editions.

“I see significant improvement in productivity after theI-FAAST option was exercised on the PC. My sense tells meit has improved significantly — the PC is more responsiveand robust! Response time went to immediate.

“Overall, I can state that Diskeeper version 10 has given‘added productivity’ to the Server and has demonstrated lit-tle to no bottlenecks (network slowdowns) for our account-ing software.

“Since installing Diskeeper 10, I rarely get calls. It seemsthat the bottlenecks disappeared when we added I-FAAST tothe defrag schedule.

“By far Diskeeper has a new benchmark — you should beturning quite a few heads with this product.”— Joseph V. Paone, Vereens Stores

“The I-FAAST integration immediately increased my fileaccess time better than 25% and was very noticeable. ThisDiskeeper 10 Premier is a real winner! I had no problemswhatsoever with installation or operation of the product.”— Starke Donnally, Beta Tester, Forum Poster

“I believe that the ‘I-FAAST’ feature really separatesDiskeeper v10 from the previous versions. I believe it maybe one key benefit to performance enhancements. I ran itas much as possible on both versions.

“My hard drive now loads Windows faster, accesses datafaster, loads applications faster.

“Overall in my opinion, these are the BEST versionsreleased by Diskeeper Corporation to date!

“What I noticed… especially on my PC with Windows XP Pro(32-bit) using a single Maxtor 250g Sata150 16mb cache harddrive, was a nice increase in its access times. Before usingDiskeeper v10 Premier on this drive, even though the drivewas already fast, it seemed to have a ‘slight delay (hdd lag)’

when doing daily tasks like browsing through folders, copy-ing/pasting, loading applications, loading windows at startup, etc. After using Diskeeper v10 Premier on this drive, ALL thatimproved. I’m a ‘big power user,’ so trust me, I could tell. Ialso ran some benchmarks using Atto DiskBench and my burstspeeds read higher after using Diskeeper v10 Premier.”— Kelly Irish, Phat-X, Tech

“I enabled I-FAAST on my WXP machine, and was informedthat it should improve my performance by 38%.

“On my own systems, 32- and 64-bit Windows XP, the per-formance dusts the other defragmentation programs I used. For the initial run, Diskeeper doubled the speed.”— John W. Davison, Jr., President, Factotum

“I’m using Diskeeper in Smart Scheduling™ mode on myworkstations and I definitely feel that they are faster with thenew version 10. The Premier Edition is probably the best, most feature-packed upgrade I have seen with this product.

“I use I-FAAST and love the feature. The thing that I likemost about it is that Diskeeper now does a thorough pass toconsolidate files on the fastest part of the drive once a dayand then runs for a couple minutes a few times a day tomaintain low fragmentation. Using I-FAAST allows Diskeeperto do its job better, faster, and keeps it out of my way.”— Michael D. Lawler, GW Micro, Inc.,

Barry LittleBarry’s Rigs ’n’ Reviews“Diskeeper 10 Professional Premier worked well on my sys-tem, and was stable, with no issues or problems. In fact, defragmentation overall took less time, was more thorough, and used fewer system resources with Diskeeper 10 thanwith the previous version; apparently the new I-FAAST tech-nology working in conjunction with Diskeeper 10’s improveddefragmentation routines is doing its job. As always, resultswill vary between users, based on the individual level offragmentation, the applications and the hardware used.Once you’ve run Diskeeper 10 on your system for a while, you will notice the difference.

“With improved core technologies (‘Set It and Forget It’, FragShield™, and I/O Smart™) that are faster and more efficientthan previous versions, all-new I-FAAST and Large File Defrag-mentation, Windows x64 support; the ability to defragment asmany as eight volumes up to 2 Terabytes each simultaneous, improved job reporting and new Historical reporting, Diskeeper10 Professional Premier is a must-have utility for anyone seri-ous about maximizing their investment in large, high-perform-ance hard drives. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee.”

Rob WilliamsTechgage.com—Senior Editor,Owner“What all this boils down to is this: Diskeeper 10 ProPremier will allow you to run scheduled defragmentation oflocal and networked drives, run boot time defrags of localdrives and defragment huge volumes with ease. It will allowup to eight simultaneous defragmentation jobs to run atonce (while this is great for multiple disk systems you wouldbe better served to queue partitions on a single disk) and itoffers some very advanced defragmentation methods suchas I-FAAST and large file optimization.”

Lou Torraca“Technology in Plain English”Around Hawaii

Breakthrough I-FAAST Technology“Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology(I-FAAST) improves file access and creation by an average of10 percent to 20 percent, and by as much as 80 percent. When I-FAAST is enabled, Diskeeper runs benchmarks onthe disk volumes to learn their performance characteristics.Diskeeper then continually monitors volumes to determinewhich files are requested most often.

“I-FAAST uses an analysis technique that prevents Diskeeperfrom being ‘fooled’ by files that have been recently accessed.

“Using collected monitoring information, Diskeepersequences files to take best advantage of both the logicalcharacteristics and physical characteristics of the volume. The sequencing process is integrated with backgrounddefragmentation, making its operation transparent. I-FAASTintelligence allows Diskeeper to adapt to changing situa-tions; if the demands on a given system change (such aslong-dormant files suddenly being frequently accessed),Diskeeper adjusts its behavior.

“Since I-FAAST learns over time, it can take up to a week forthe full benefits to become apparent.

“1. Click the I-FAAST icon to open the I-FAAST Job Properties window.

“2. Choose one or more volumes.

“3. Click the checkbox to enable I-FAAST.

“That’s about all there is to the install. I was then able tosit back and not worry about the old bugaboos of having toremember to defrag regularly. The new version has beenworking like a charm for the last 6 weeks, so I think I amjustified in saying it’s a real winner.”

8

Q: What is the genesis of I-FAAST?“I-FAAST is the brainchild of our senior technical leadershipas part of a huge ongoing push to explore technologicalboundaries. It started as a theory (probably a drawing onsome napkin), given the advanced architecture of moderndisks. We long had known all about many of the poor imple-mentations that have existed in the past, and exactly whythey didn’t work. So, we tasked our top engineers to under-take a major investigation and have them look deeper intodisk performance and the benefits of file sequencing. Withmultiple layers of abstraction, many unique hurdles had tobe overcome to truly understand the validity of data sequenc-ing and how it can be applied on real systems. Our hard workpaid off, and what we discovered was the performance ofdisk(s) can, and absolutely should be, calibrated: calibration-defining adjustments made to meet a standard. That stan-dard (peak disk performance) absolutely had to be percepti-ble by I-FAAST so it could take the correct actions.”

Q: What issues were you looking to solve when I-FAAST first began to be created?

“In any production line, analysts look at the weak points:the points that slow the line down and limit the number ofproducts it can produce. Anything that can be done toenhance bottlenecks affords greater production—a simple

principle. So it comes back to the disk being the ‘weak link’in a computer, and just like defragmentation, I-FAAST’s pur-pose is to strengthen the weak points.”

Q: What makes I-FAAST unique?“Quite simply, it works! I-FAAST is the real deal (we have apaper that walks an Admin through, verifying I-FAAST benefitswith third party tools). As I noted earlier, many theories havebeen bandied about in technical forums and papers.Knowledge of geometry without a proper understanding of filesystems, and vice versa, has lead to incorrect applications inthe past. Perhaps the most significant advancement withI-FAAST is its capacity to dynamically ‘learn’ disk subsystemsand actual data usage; it really is an intelligent technology.

“Most IT professionals are well familiar that Windows hasincluded various file performance-ordering techniques overthe years. It started back in the Win9x days. While consid-erably shallower, the modern ‘Fastboot’ in Windows XP isthe closest comparable technology.

“The other key aspect of I-FAAST that should be mentionedis that it’s a ‘real world’ tool, not some obscure technologydeveloped in and only functional in a sterile test lab.”

Q: How will this benefit sys admins?“I’ll start this response with the axiom that defragmentationis the more important technology. I view I-FAAST as the icingon the cake. Defragmentation can truly save a system fromutter uselessness, returning 200+ percent performance inmore severe cases. I-FAAST takes defragmentation onestep further and provides some extra transaction/process-ing capability. No machine in use for any worthwhile purposeshould be without automatic defragmentation, and any sys-tem worth its salt should be using I-FAAST to afford the bestpossible disk performance.”

Q: What can I-FAAST do for a company’sperformance and production?

“Re-iterating what I mentioned before as to the problems itsolves; it allows a computer to squeeze every last drop ofperformance out of the disk subsystem. Even if you’re run-ning NAS, SAN or RAID arrays on the back end, I-FAAST willadapt. It provides benefit regardless of the disk structureunderneath. I-FAAST isn’t programmed to apply some rotemetrics to calibrate disk performance; it is revolutionarybecause it has the ability to learn, in every case, how to cal-ibrate disk performance.”

I-FAAST is available in Professional Premier, Server Standard and ServerEnterprise Editions.

Recently Joe Paone, CIO of Vereens Stores Inc., spoke on thepopular Computer Outlook Radio Broadcast with John Iasiuolo. When speaking on I-FAAST, Joe was thrilled with the results.

“We installed some new software and it was very broad-band-intensive. In fact, it’s a very fat client that operates onour system and we were receiving slowdowns on all the PCs,some freeze ups, the routers were having collisions, wewere dropping packets left and right — we were getting anaverage of 76 dropped packets an hour. It was a mess. Iwas beta testing Version 10 and I installed it on the server.During the day people were coming up to me, ‘Joe did youget the new server in?’ ‘No, it’s still the same old server.’‘Well, this thing is flying!’

“Virtually all the collisions were gone, the freeze ups weregone, and I thought it was just new Diskeeper Version 10.What I found out was that when we turned on Diskeeper 10,I also turned on Diskeeper 10’s new I-FAAST feature on aparticular drive. As it turns out, that was the drive where thenew resource-intensive software resided.”

How many users have called yourHelp Desk in a panic, sayingthey’ve lost or overwritten a criti-

cally impor tant file? The Windowsserver recycle bin doesn’t protect filesdeleted by network clients. Restoringfiles from backup takes forever and maynot get the latest version of the file. Andneither backup nor “snapshots” canhelp if a user has saved-over the ver-sion he or she needs.

Now there is a solution—new Undelete 5! Undelete 5replaces the recycle bin with a Recovery Bin that cap-tures and protects all deleted files, no matter howthey were deleted. Undelete works in real time, so italways has the latest version of the file—and in thecase of Microsoft® Word, Excel® and PowerPoint® files,it can even recover earlier “saved-over” versions.

Best yet, recovering files with Undelete 5 is instant—all it takes is a few clicks of the mouse. Undelete 5even gives you the option of letting users recover theirown files from server Recovery Bins!
