ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE

The Annual Rummage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd. We need your stuff!! Consider this the ultimate in recycling and as you begin your spring cleaning, please bring all your “treasures” to St. Luke’s. We have space upstairs to store items until the sale so feel free to bring them by the office during normal business hours or on Sunday morning when you come to church!! If you are interested in helping with this year’s sale, please contact Roxane Rhoads at 731-660-1530.

ST. LUKE’S - IN AND FOR THE COMMUNITY by The Rev. Gayle McCarty

Part of our mission at St. Luke's Episcopal Church is to work among and for the community. In response to the Gospel call to "Love Your Neighbor", we strive to make our facilities available to the community per our Facility Use and Alcohol Use policies. We are grateful to have been able to open our doors on a regular basis to many and diverse groups this past year. The Jackson Symphony, Dr. Gene Davenport’s Bible Study, the Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society, the Interfaith Discussion Group facilitated by Chris Wheeler and the West Tennessee Homebrewers are just a few of the organizations we have welcomed. Others have enjoyed our space for special events.

Canonically, decisions regarding the use of the building lie with the rector or Priest-in-Charge, in our case. I am delighted to share that Downtown Dogs Group, one of our Outreach partners, recently accepted my invitation to hold their monthly board meetings at St. Luke’s. They are a no-kill organization committed to rescuing abandoned companion animals with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving permanent homes. Sounds like the work of the Gospel to me!

SAVE THE DATE - MAY 7 YOUNG FAMILIES MINISTRIES PIZZA, MOVIE AND BRAINSTORMING

All families with children from birth to age 12, are invited to join us for our initial gathering, Saturday, May 7 from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. We will gather for pizza in the Parish Hall at 5:30 pm. After dinner, the kids will enjoy a movie with adult supervision while the parents meet in the Commons to dream about the possibilities of this new and exciting ministry at St. Luke's. CHILDREN’S CORNER by Donna Agnew, Director of Children’s Christian Education

The best gift my parents gave me - FAITH! They practiced it every day! Six good practices for giving the gift of faith to your children:

• Teach them about the seasons of the church. We will soon begin work on a “color wheel” of the liturgical calendar. These seasons are an important part of our faith.

• Talk about what you believe. Sometimes the questions are tough! Listen to what your child is really asking, and speak from the heart.

• Family, friends, and our church family are an important part of the faith journey. Involve them.

• Spend time with your child playing, reading, and talking about things that matter most to you.

• Let your children help others in the church, in the community, wherever you are serving. Making service a habit early on will help it become an expected part of life.

• Make church a “habit” for your family! In the chaos of life, church involvement can be a challenge.

Thanks to all of you that make working with our children a joy!

My apologies to Tom Erich for using some of his observations.

DO WE CARE?

Churches are not dying because of the wayward "nones" or "secular humanists”, or too much change or inadequate leaders, or bad theology. Main Line churches are dying because we do not care enough. If leaders cared, they would not continue to do the same old things in the same old way, even if they are not working. If members cared, they would be demanding more instead of dropping out.

We expect GOD to drop everything to tend to our needs, especially in times of need, but we don't bother to do the same.

You can help by supporting the priest, deacon and vestry as we begin to do things that may be different from the ways things have been done in the past. We want St Luke's to grow and move forward.

FROM YOUR JUNIOR WARDEN by Tricia Odom, Junior Warden

My heart is humbled by your confidence and support as I begin this journey as your Junior Warden. I am grateful to work alongside Senior Warden Jim Craig and am excited to draw from his vast knowledge and experience. I am also honored to be a part of new beginnings at St. Luke's as we support our Priest-In-Charge Gayle McCarty. Gayle has already captured our hearts with her pastoral care, inspiring sermons and her passion for excellence in all we do.

Having served in many capacities at multiple Episcopal churches; and through my job at First United Methodist Church I am familiar with what it takes to make things happen at a church...it takes ALL of us! Our time, our talents, our financial resources and most of all our prayers. Please join me in daily prayer for our parish, its leadership and all those who enter its doors.. We welcome your suggestions, your help and we covet your prayers as we strive to increase God's Kingdom through St. Luke's.

REFLECTIONS CLASS

Each Sunday, our Reflections Class meets in the library at 9:30 a.m. Conversations are based on the scripture readings for worship each week. Gary Wake is the facilitator. All are welcome!

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - THE GREAT FIFTY DAYS: LIVING THE RESURRECTION LIFE

During the Easter season, we will have guest speakers from outside the St. Luke's community talking about various aspects of living a resurrection life, including the subject of end-of-life issues, how the 1st-century church lived a resurrection life under Roman persecution, and speakers from various community service organizations talking about how they are helping disadvantaged, abused, and/or addicted citizens live into the resurrection. Please join us each Sunday from April 3rd - May 8th at 9:30 a.m. for this series. We will meet in The Commons.

OUR NEWCOMER MINISTRY

Our Newcomer Ministry is a new offering designed to welcome and involve people who are new to St. Luke’s, whether it is their first Sunday or a return visit. At St. Luke’s we want every person to know he or she can find a home here - a community that welcomes you into the heart of the Body of Christ. A Welcome Class is held every second Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in upstairs. Meet in the Narthex at 9:15 a.m. and a committee member will guide everyone. The next Welcome Class will be April 10th. If you are “new” to St. Luke’s, we hope you will join us. Free admission (Donations gratefully accepted!) St. Luke's Episcopal Church (309 E. Baltimore St.) Memphis Men's Chorale & Memphis Women's Chorale Jeremy T. Warner, conductor and artistic director

The Memphis Men's Chorale returns to St. Luke's (since May of 2013) and brings with them the Memphis Women's Chorale. This concert will feature music from composers living and writing music in the world today accompanied at various points by violin, piano, and even wine glasses. Yes, wine glass accompaniment! Composers such as Ola Gjeilo, Eric Whitacre, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Chris Cardona and more will be on the program for the evening. The concert will last approximately 60 minutes and is completely FREE and open to the public! (For those wishing to support our cause, and we hope most of you will, there is a $10 suggested donation for adults and $5 suggested donation for students and all donations will be gratefully accepted at the door.) The conductor of the group, Jeremy Warner, grew up in Jackson and is a Union University alumnus!

SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads

The outreach partner in mission for April is ComeUnity Cafe. If you have never taken the opportunity to try them out for lunch, now is your chance. The Cafe's hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. They offer a choice of two soups, two salads, and two sandwiches. Usually one choice from each group is a vegan offering. You may order a full serving or a half serving of each item. If you take one, pay $5; take two, pay $7; take three, pay $9. Or if you can't afford to pay, ask the staff. Volunteer to work in the kitchen or the dining room for one hour, and you can eat free.

All of their food is locally sourced as much as possible. They even "grow-their-own" in the garden space across the alley from St. Luke's. After the tornado of 2003, St. Luke's acquired the vacant lot and donates its use for the Cafe's urban garden.

Coming up on April 16, at 6:30 pm, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the Cafe and enjoy a fine meal too. For $100 per couple you can take part in an African/Southern comfort fusion dinner. The evening is meant to be a very relaxed SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT meal. As the date approaches, two local liquor stores will have wine pairings available. BYOB. Call the Cafe at 300-4674 during their regular hours or anytime at 431-2486 for reservations. Come early as they will stop serving when they run out.

RIFA NEEDS FOR APRIL

This month's Snack Backpack contribution is Pop-Tarts. The next time you are grocery shopping, please pick up a box for the kids.
