FROM OUR OWN AMY (Harper) PADBURY Support Me Hello friends and family! I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing you today to ask for your support in a fundraising effort I am un-dertaking to benefit suicide prevention. It has been two years now since my dad (Glen Harper) lost his fight with depression. I mourn his loss every day but I finally feel like I have the strength to come "out of the darkness". That is why I am joining with hundreds of others who have been affected by suicide in the 18 mile "Out of the Darkness Overnight" walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The fundraising efforts of this walk go directly toward re-search to prevent suicide as well as education and support for "survivors" like myself. Unfortunately, I am a part of a very large group of people who have lost someone to suicide as nearly 30,000 people in the United States and over one million world wide die from suicide each year. My friend Andrea Klempka and I will be walking as members of team "Daughters of Dads" in memory of our fathers. My personal fundraising goal is $1,000.00 and I would appreciate any kind donation in support of this cause. As many of you know, my dad suffered from depression and took his own life in March of 2012. While we are left with many unanswered questions, we know that he suffered from a grave internal struggle that ulti-mately consumed him. Toward the end of his life, when he was the most sick, we were at times able to catch glimpses of his tenderness, intelligence, and humility breaking through his pain. It has taken me two years now to realize that these glimpses were probably not signs that he was improving, but signs that his spirit was still there, fighting for the life he loved. It pains me to know that he fought for so long feeling this way. I believe his mental illness was a terminal diagnosis, just like terminal cancer, and that he had finally chosen to stop treat-ment and stop the pain. With cancer, a person's autonomy to choose death over treatment is somehow more easily understood, but I encourage people to think about mental illness in the same light. I am joining in this walk to encourage discussion, broaden acceptance, and perhaps challenge perceptions about death by sui-cide. My dad devoted his life to healing and helping others. He was a shining example of charity and lived by the "golden rule". Walking these 18 miles and raising money to honor and remember him feel like the right thing to do and I hope you will consider supporting my cause. Donations can be made online here through the "support me" links on this page. They can also be made by check made out to AFSP and mailed to me. All donations are 100% tax deductible and eligible for company matching which can help me to reach my goal even faster! My address is: Amy Padbury, 111 Equestrian Drive, New Hope, PA 18938 I really appreciate your time in reading this and taking a moment to consider a donation. Most importantly, I thank you for your continued love for my dad and for my family over the years. He is greatly missed by all of us, but absolutely never forgotten. With love and gratitude, Amy

To Celebrate Moms in May Our Art Gallery display is looking for your contributions in honor/in memory of MOM! If you have a favorite picture of your Mom, or something your Mom made (a quilt, a painting, etc.) we invite you to bring it and display it in our Gallery. Please write a brief paragraph describing your object/photo so that others can share in this special meaning; and make sure your name is attached in some way to your object/photo. These may be brought to the church office any time, and will remain up through May.

Beginning JUNE 22 THROUGH AUGUST 24, we will

only need ONE DEACON per Sunday. On

these Sundays, the congregation will be com-

ing forward to receive communion. The ONE

DEACON will need to prepare, and then be

available to serve those in the pews who do

not chose to or are not able to come forward.

If you have NOT SIGNED UP TO SERVE, we need

your help — SIGN UP SHEET IS IN THE GLASS-WAY.

A Heads-Up to our Diaconate

JUNE 1—CHURCH PICNIC & ALL-CHURCH PLANNING EVENT

You’re be amazed at how much we can accomplish when we put our heads to-gether! On Sunday, June 1, we’re having a POT-LUCK CHURCH PICNIC in Har-low Hall, and you’re to bring your pot-luck dish (enough for your family PLUS two), drinks and utensils provided. This is a two-fold event for us as a church. First of all, it’s an opportunity to share in fun and fellowship. But secondly, you will have a chance to add your voice to the plans and programming of the church as we lay out our plans for June-December, 2014. This is the first of our Strategic Plan events in which we will involve the whole congregation in our planning. So put JUNE 1 on your calendar; sign-up to bring your dish on the sign-up board in the Glass-way or on-line at http://doodle.com/zf58fryxcvnemgep, where you can put your name and select what you’re like to bring (PLEASE do NOT bring anything that has to be kept warm or cooked!!)

SUMMER STUDY SERIES on Prayer

Beginning Sunday, June 8, the Elders will be hosting a Summer Study series on Prayer, as we move into expanding our Church’s Prayer Ministry. This will be a 6-week study series culminating on Sunday, July 13 (we’ll skip the holiday week-end of July 6). We will meet during the Sunday School hour from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Me-morial Chapel. Following the study, Dolly Youssef and Laird Thomason, two of our Elders, will be working on expanding the church’s Prayer Ministry. For many, many years our Tuesday Morning Prayer group members have been vital and faithful pray-ers, and this is an opportunity for others to share more intentionally, through prayer, in the concerns and care of our church family, friends, our community and the world. FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE STUDY... you have three ways to indicate your interest: complete the form in up-coming bulletins call the church office sign-up on the Doodle Poll by going to this link: http://doodle.com/qxyk49icvhi8rrmw

A Special “Thank You”

… to the Boy Scout Troop 255 and Fernando Leiva for

the construction and installation of shelving in our

“flower” room (the storage area on the pulpit side of the

sanctuary). This area has been long over-due for some

renovation and now it’s in great shape! This project has

been Fernando’s Eagle Scout project, and we wish him

well in completing this as he anticipates graduating this

year.

JUST A REMINDER:

Please let the Church

Office or the Minister

know whenever there is

a hospitalization or a

change in shut-in/nursing home status. We

would MUCH rather get several notifications

than to not hear at all!

If you cannot reach the Office or Rev. Tatham,

please contact Chair of the Elders Richard Sher-

man and he will pass along the information.
