Faith in Christ gives us grace to love and serve in gratitude.

“Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.” Psalm 100:2

Bethel: A Place of Welcome and Grace

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and

welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as

you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

~ Matthew 25:34-40

These verses from Matthew’s gospel have always been very important to me for understanding how I am to live my life as a disciple of Jesus. Worshipping God is only a part of the life of a disciple. Learning and having fellowship with other Christians is only a part of the life of a disciple. Putting our faith into ac-tion is a HUGE part of living the life of a disciple. Jesus tells us to love one an-other as He loved us – this was after He knelt down to wash the feet of each of the disciples, including the one who would betray him and the one who would deny him three times and the ones who would scatter following His arrest (John 13). For some reason, people have the idea that believing in Jesus is all about removing the roadblocks and the difficulties from our lives in the relent-less search for that elusive “happiness.” Instead, isn’t believing in Jesus about learning how to be a true community the way God’s envisions it?

Jesus sought to remove barriers between people through His miracles, and the miracles themselves helped people to recognize the full power of God at work through the person standing before them. He healed the woman with the 12-year flow of blood and restored her to society. He forgave the woman caught in adultery. He restored sight, made the lame to walk, raised people from the dead, and calmed the seas. Why? So that others would know who He is and proclaim in the words of St. Peter: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

This summer and as we prepare for the fall, God is at work in and through us for the same reason – so that others would know who He is. As we progress through the summer, the lunches for SERVE project is gaining momentum (contact: Janice Burlovich); the Community Garden is in its 4th growing season (contact: Elizabeth Burnside); we’re preparing to host Vacation Bible School (Elizabeth Burnside); the Sawdust & Sandals work trip is finalizing their plans (Elizabeth Burnside); we’ll take youth to Mar Lu Ridge for Confirmation

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Cont’d from page 1 Camp (contact: Pastor Jeff); the church lawn and beds are being maintained to welcome guests; Rally Day plans are beginning for the fall; we’re working with our summer intern, Jamie Donahue, on how we might reach out into the community better; and we continue our work with the Facilities Task Force and Music Search Task Force.

Even with all of this activity, we orient ourselves to whom Jesus has called us to be and what He has called us to do as His disciples. In the FisH Bible Study this year, we used Andy Stanley’s “Christian: It’s Not What You Think” video series. One of the many memorable things he said was in a mock con-versation between Jesus and a modern-day disciple. Using the disciple’s voice, Andy said: “Jesus, whatever you want me to do or wherever you want me to go … I just want you to know, Jesus, that my answer is already ‘yes.’ Even before you ask, my answer is ‘yes.’” That sounds pretty risky. And it is.

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to love God above all things and our neighbors as ourselves – we are called even to love and serve “the least of these.” We are called to love whoever Jesus loves and wherever Jesus is. We are called to serve who Jesus serves, and forgive who Jesus forgives.

So, as we continue through these summer months, this is a good time to try something new and live your faith in ways that you might not have tried be-fore. This is a great time to ask yourself who you may not want to love or who may be difficult to love, and whether Jesus loves that person. That can lead to prayer asking God to show you how to love, how to listen, how to be open to that person. This is a perfect time to greet people at church that you haven’t greeted before. Bethel is a great place to worship, but it’s also a great place to grow in faith as we continue to be a place of welcome and a place of God’s grace.

In Christ,

LEADERSHIP

“Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you…” Hebrews 13:7

Pastor Jeff’s DMin Update

I can hardly believe that the end of my research period is in sight! All of the cottage meetings are now completed, and we held the special congregational meeting on June 12. All that remains at this point are a few focus groups, the final survey, and some one-on-one interviews. This is where research and real life collide. I was supposed to have held one-on-one interviews after the initial survey back in November. Thank you to those who volunteered, and I apologize for not getting those interviews done.

I have the majority of the first four chapters written of my final thesis. Throughout the summer and fall, I will compile data, analyze it and write the findings and conclusions. The final thesis will be submitted in Febru-ary 2017; I’ll fly to St. Paul, MN, to defend in March or April, then graduate in May.

So far, I have learned a great deal, and I’m sure I’ll gain more insights as I examine the data in detail. I plan to share the results in a presentation and in written form sometime in the spring of 2017.

For more information on the cottage meetings and to sign up, please visit www.BethelManassas.org/discernment.

Thank you, Bethel, for being with me on this journey!

Pastor Jeff

COUNCIL CORNER

H appy summer and Independence Day! Half of the church year is behind us. Vacation Bible School was a great success. The stewardship team provided

a Time survey and a Talent Survey. Our Facilities Task Force, along with efforts in helping with our Pastor’s developing DMin, have moved us closer to visioning

Bethel’s physical and value-based future. Our music search team is working hard to fill the long-term opening for organist and choir director. A handful of applicants applied and a few qualified candidates were interviewed. Unfortunately, an agreement on compensation could not be reached. The team is developing ideas to help move us forward.

We are looking forward to Rally Day and the start of the fall church season. I hope your summer is fun, safe, and renewing.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will

not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 EDUCATION

Bethel's Preschool is currently accepting registration for the 2016/2017 school year. We offer a 3-day-a-week class for 3 year olds as well as a 3 and a 5-day-a-week class for 4 year olds, If you have a child (or know someone who does) who will have turned 3 or 4 by September 30, our preschool is a great place to begin their learning experience. The teachers prepare the children for kindergarten in a loving, Christian atmosphere. Registration forms are available on the bulletin board next to the Church Nursery. For more information, you may contact the pre-

school at 703-368-7125 or [email protected].

Playground Mulch Fundraiser

Bethel’s playground needs additional mulch to continue to be a safe place for all children to play. Play-ground mulch is specifically designed for playgrounds and is rated to a fall height up to ten feet! It is made from recycled rubber, is softer and safer than traditional mulch, has superior drainage (allowing play after rain), minimizes dust, does not attract insects or bugs, and will not fade or rot.

Our goal is 100 bags of Playground Mulch and each bag costs $15.00. Since this prod-uct is not sold in stores, Bethel will order the Playground Mulch in bulk. Please consider sponsoring one or more bags. Checks may be made payable to Bethel Lutheran Church, and note on the check “Playground.” Fliers are also available in today’s bulletin announcements. Place sponsorship funds in the offering plate or drop off at the Church Office by Sunday, July 31. If you have questions, contact Debra Clark, [email protected] or 703-361-2989.

Sunday School Teachers Needed

The Sunday School program has teaching vacancies for the session beginning in September. The curricu-lum has easy-to-follow lessons so your prep time is kept to a minimum. It is fun to team-teach! Ask a friend to join you or let us introduce you to a new friend. We would like to have two teachers per class. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity.

Classes in need of teachers: PreK – Kindergarten 1st & 2nd Grade 5th & 6th grade

Please direct any questions to Nancy Cooper (703-361-7475) or [email protected] or Maureen Schilpp at [email protected]

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! RALLY DAY IS SEPTEMBER 11th! Rally Day marks the beginning of another Sunday school year and our annual church picnic. We begin the day with one worship service at 10AM followed by the picnic. Be sure to watch the bulletin for more details in upcoming weeks.

fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his

Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:3

Calling all Crafters!

The 2016 Bethel Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 22nd. With three months to prepare, we are calling on any creative person who cares to contribute to our inventory of crafted goods to do so. Young or old, men or women, crocheted items or furniture made from pallets – please use your creativity for Bethel’s benefit!

A group of us meets every Tuesday evening around 7:00 pm at Vicki Wilson’s house. You’re welcome to craft with us or to work on your projects in the comfort of your own home.

If you have any questions, please contact Joan Appleton Costanza at [email protected].

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the

same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

2 Timothy 2:2

On September 18, 2013 we went live with our current version of Bethel’s website. At that time we had three members on our technical team, in addition to Pastor Jeff.

Our website has been recognized within the Metro DC Synod as being well designed and informative. Our website has be-come an important part of Bethel's communication with our members, people looking for a church home, Bethel Preschool families, and as a resource to our many community groups.

If you are interested in keeping our award-winning web site fresh and vital, please contact ei-

ther Pastor Jeff or Joan Appleton Costanza ([email protected]) for details.

VBS 2016

Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from prison to palace

We had a blast at VBS this year. Thank you to our 53 volunteer adults & teen-agers who were part of a fabulous team for VBS this year! They spent a week serving as Kitchen Crew, Family Leaders, Shopkeepers, A/V, and as Celebra-tion Leader. Thank you also to those who helped prepare for the event by designing and decorat-ing the church and helping manage all the administrative tasks. The volunteers were yet again, such a warm, hospitable group of folks and I am deeply grateful for your leadership at VBS.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

“How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28: 17

Lock-Up Volunteers Needed

Bit of a night owl? Don't have an early commute? Consider joining the

Lockup Crew. We take a week long shift locking up Bethel for the night.

Times are flexible, outside groups should be out of the building around

9:30PM. Lockup normally takes 15 - 20 minutes. Contact the church office

to arrange for a walk-through with one of the crew members and get added to the rotation.

GARDEN WORK DAYS

Saturday, July 2, 9:00am Sunday, July 17 following late service

Saturday, August 6, 9:00am Sunday, August 21 following late service

The Community Garden Team will be meeting on the 1st Saturday and 3rd Sunday each month to work together in the garden. While you do not need to bring tools, as we have a few spare ones, you are welcome to bring a trowel, gloves, and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

WORSHIP & MUSIC “Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence

with singing.” Psalm 100:2

A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE BLESSINGS WE RECEIVE FROM GOD THROUGH PETS AND ANIMALS Sunday evening, August 14th at 6:30 p.m., Bethel will celebrate its fifth Blessing of the Animals. The service will be held in the grassy picnic area bordering Sudley Road and Plantation Lane. In case of rain, the service will be held in the Great Hall. You are invited to bring your pets – one or all - to this service. Please ensure that all pets are on a leash and under control. Water will be provided for the pets.

The unique blessings our pets and all animals bring to us, especially to those who love and care for them, will be celebrated with reflection on the “Gifts of Creation and Noah’s Ark.” This service welcomes children and pet owners to celebrate how God blesses us through His special gifts. The gift and blessing of animals is central to our understanding of the meaning of human life. We see the blessings in Genesis with the story of creation, in the great story of Noah with all aboard the ark, from the many references throughout Holy Scripture in the Prophets and Psalms to the message of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and the new creation’s promise in the revelation of St. John.

Please join us as we celebrate the joy brought to our lives by those small and large animals that God has placed in our care. Welcome, God’s people and God’s creatures, to God’s house.

STEWARDSHIP “…it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20: 35b

Stewardship Matters: Here, Near, and Far

D uring the months of May and June, our Here stewardship emphases have been on Time and Talent. While these two areas are often teamed

with Treasure, as we move to the use of a year-round stewardship calendar, these two essential areas can be highlighted for a more focused consideration.

You have already been invited to take a self-reflective evaluation of time. The evaluations were distrib-uted at our services and on the e-News and can currently be found on our website www.bethelmanassas.org/stewardship. Taking the time to prayerfully consider how we spend our time,

reflecting on how well our time spent matches our professed values, and making a personal pledge to God are some ways we can grow in faith and grace.

When we say "God's Work; Our Hands," we recognize our role in helping bring about God's kingdom and fulfilling His will. Therefore, a church-wide survey on our talents, interests, and skills can help us work together more effectively as the body of the church. This critical information will help teams match their needs with congregants' interests and skills as well as building our Here community by simply tell-ing us more about our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Offering your time and talent means our hands working for His Kingdom. A talent/interest survey has been introduced at worship services and is now available, both in print form in the narthex, if you prefer, or as an electronic survey online at www.bethelmanassas.org/stewardship. Please take the time to fill out the survey and submit it. Your

personal stewardship always matters.

Finally, those members who have served as coordinators of Near and Far so faithfully in the past have had to step down from those positions. Thus, we currently need others to step forward and take up the work of coordinating these groups, with the position of Near coordinator particularly pressing. Serving our local community through SERVE, our community garden, and the developing lunch project, as well as networking with other community groups and projects are some of the important ways we can be God's hands nearby. Keeping all involved persons informed and individual efforts effective calls for a person at the helm. Is God calling you to help with either coordinator position, but especially the Near role? We ask that you prayerfully consider this. If you hear the call to serve, please contact Pastor Wil-son or Carol Blauvelt. In God's peace,

Carol Blauvelt, Stewardship Chair

Opportunities at SERVE

Back-to-School Supply Wish List

Please refer to the insert in this newsletter for a list of school supplies needed for the upcoming school year. New items only will be collected in the narthex during August and September. SERVE is able to dou-ble monetary donations by purchasing supplies worth $2 for each $1 donated. Make checks payable to NVFS – Memo Line: School Supplies for SERVE.

Pillows – There is an ongoing need for NEW pillows for the 92-bed shelter residents. Each is given a pil-low when they enter the shelter. You may take pillows directly to the shelter any day, any time and receipts

are given for the donation. Got new pillows? Can’t get to the shelter? See Grace Shultz.

Non-perishable Food Items – The grocery basket in the narthex waits there patiently each week to be filled with items to be delivered to the Hunger Resource Center on Mondays. All non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, paper goods, laundry detergent, diapers, etc., etc. are always needed. Kid-friendly foods are especially needed during summer months when children who are on free and reduced lunches are unable to get meals at school. Some suggested items include soups, mac & cheese, canned

Chef-Boy-R-Dee pastas, canned fruit and juices, canned meats and cereals.

Volunteers Needed – Thursday afternoons, 12:30-3:30 p.m. in the Hunger Resource warehouse to help with client services. Clients take a food cart and can “shop” for types of foods their family enjoy. (There is no charge and this gives clients a sense of self-esteem as they make their own choices.) Duties include welcoming clients to the shopping area, assembling food packages, and answering questions. If you have never done this before, it’s easy and fun to learn, and you will feel great knowing you are helping provide food to those to come monthly to feed their families. Volunteers 16 and up are welcome, school age volun-teers under 16 must volunteer with a parent. Contact Navara Cannon, Volunteer Coordinator, SERVE

STEWARDSHIP “…it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20: 35b

LUNCHES FOR SERVE

SERVE reached out to the Greater Manassas community to provide 40 brown-bag lunches each day of the month for shelter residents. As the Bethel congregation has done so often, we have answered the call. Five teams have been formed to provide 5 days of lunches. These groups meet on different days in the mornings and evenings so as to accommodate various schedules.

Each lunch requires the purchase, assembly and delivery of a sandwich, a bag of chips, a fruit, and a bottle of water. Each lunch carries with it an approximate cost of $2.00.

We are looking for people to donate supplies, their time to assemble, and their car to deliver the lunches, but you do not have to do all three. We welcome your support in whatever capacity you can offer. If you can help feed those in need, please contact Janice Burlovich at 703.361.2058 or [email protected]. Your time and/or financial support would go a long way toward helping our neighbors.

Thanks to all who have already volunteered their time and treasures.

Janice Burlovich

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Summer tends to be a slower time for many

people, but it's also a great time to think

about how and where you want to use your

time, and how God may be calling you. Being

involved in the ministries at Bethel helps

you grow in faith and build relationships

while also supporting the church, the com-

munity, or those in need around the world -

we call that loving and serving in the here,

near, and far.

A good place to start is with the time evalua-

tion and talent survey both posted on our

website:

www.BethelManassas.org/stewardship.

Throughout the summer:

School Supply Drive for SERVE

Food drive for SERVE
