  • ALLEN

Some of the Allen lineage has defied proof by strict genealogical standards. The earliest generation to generation bridge presented here is built on associations and common locations. The earliest Allens so far identified as belonging to the Allen family of Jennie Jeanetta (Allen) McCleary were found in Culpeper County, Virginia. James Allen made his will 23 February 1815, probated 6 September 1815, in which among other children he named and left bequests to sons John and James, Jr. I

While still living in Culpeper County the younger James Allen married Lucinda "Lucy," maiden name unknown. In the spring of 1822 James and Lucy sold the Culpeper land he had inherited from his father, and in 1824 John and his wife disposed of his in..lieritance.2

Both sons, James, Jr, and John Allen, were found on an 1828 Harrison Township, Perry County, Ohio, personal property tax list. 3 By the taking of 1830 Perry County census John had relocated to Bearfield Township.4 In 1830 James [40-50] was still living in Harrison Township, but now he was accompanied by Richard, Harvey and another John Allen [all 20-30]. 5 Both brothers, James and John Allen were missing from the 1840 Perry County census, John having died in 1833 and James presumed dead before 1840.6

There were various other Allens living in Perry County as early as the erection of the county in 1818, and no attempt has been made here to determine all possible Allen interrelationships. 7 It is not proven that the Richard and Harvey of the 1830 census were the sons of James and Lucy Allen, however, John is believed to have been their son and the progenitor of the Allen line being researched here.

John Allen was born between 1806 and 1810 in Culpeper County, Virginia. 8 He was married 11 February 1830 in Perry County, Ohio, to Nancy Willard,9 possibly the daughter of Isaac Willard_ Io Sometime after 1840 Nancy and John relocated to Hocking County, Ohio, having had twelve children together before her death about 1850. 11

In the early 1850's John Allen married Sarah, maiden name unknown [see Note l], by whom while living in Pickaway County, Ohio, he had three additional children. 12 John Allen died sometime after 1880, but the date and r,Iace of his death are uncertain13 [see Note 2]. Sarah Allen died 15 July 1894 in Pickaway County. 4

John C. Allen, son of John and Nancy (Willard) Allen, was born 28 December 1842 probably in Perry, possibly Hocking, County, Ohio.15 He married Emma Alice Young, daughter of Samuel and Catharine (Graul) Young, 6 March 1879 in Pickaway County, Ohio. 16

John and Emma Allen continued to live in Pickaway County until about 1884 when they moved to Sangamon County, Illinois. 17 About 1900 the family moved again, this time to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) where they are found there on the 1900 U.S. Census. 18

From Indian Territory the family relocated across the state line to Cherokee County, Kansas, and there John C. Allen died 27 May 1911. 19 Emma Alice (Young) Allen died 30 January 1922 in Prosperity, Jasper County, Missouri. 20 Both are buried in Pleasant View/Shiloh Cemetery near Baxter Springs, Kansas.21

Jennie Jeanetta Allen, daughter of John C. and Emma (Young) Allen was born 22 Septem-ber 1883 in Pickaway County, Ohio. 22 On 8 December 1902 she was married in Galena, Kansas, to John Howard McCleary, son of George W. and Nancy (Simpkins) McCleary.23 Jennie died 4 March 197 4 in Joplin, Missouri, and is buried in Osborne Cemetery there. 24

    NOTES:

    1. According to the 1860 U.S. Census for Pickaway Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, reference 8 above, there were two young persons, Samuel, age 11 , and Jacob, age 14, surnamed "Hoffman" living in the household of John and Sarah Allen. As the parents of these children are not known, the possibility exists that these two children were from a previous marriage of Sarah Allen.

On 24 January 1838 in Pickaway County a Sarah Hoffman had married Joseph Hoffman. If this is the same Sarah who later married John Allen, then her maiden name was Hoffman.

    2. A death is recorded 8 January 1892 in Benton Township, Hocking County, Ohio, for a John Allen, aged 81 , cause of death paralysis. My mother-in-law Violet (McCleary) Meredith, great-granddaughter of John Allen [Sr.], many years ago had told me the following. She quoted her grandfather, John C. Allen, as saying that he would never forgive himself for allowing his father to die in the "Poor House." It seemed unlikely that the elder John Allen had been allowed to die in the Poor House [also known as the Infirmary] as he had a nwnber of sons living nearby who were prosperous farmers and several daughters at least one of whom was married to a. well-off farmer.

Benton Township, Hocking County, is the location of the Hocking County Poor House making the above scenario more plausible. An examination of the records of this facility, if they are still extant, might clarify the circumstances of the elder John Allen' s death.

    NOTES

    1. John Allen is the proven father of John C. Allen by the Allen/Young Family Bible record listing John C. and his siblings, plus the death certificates of John C's younger brothers which name their father as John Allen (See references 26 and 27, Family Group Sheet, ALLEN 2a & 2b). No death certificate has been located for John C. Allen.

    2. As per a Hocking County, Ohio, Death Record of 8 January 1892, a John Allen died in Benton Township. Presently it is not known if this could apply to the John Allen, father of the subject of this group sheet. See the explanation in "Notes" in the Allen Family summary.
