words from Pastor John

This has been an unbelievable season of ministry. The Holy Spirit continues to move across the people of St. Andrew in amazing ways. During the past 15 years I have been given the opportunity to mentor many individuals who have been journeying through the “Ministry Inquiry Process” of the United Methodist Church. I want to share with you just a bit about a few ministry candidates that many of you have come to know. Justin Williams is currently serving at Hoffman United Methodist Church. He has completed his two year period of supervision as a Commissioned Candidate and will be Ordained an Elder at the 2013 session of Annual Conference. Justin will continue serving the Hoffman United Methodist Church in the 2013 – 2014 appointive year. Richard Hiltibran is completing his first year at United Theological Seminary, and will begin his student appointment at Lewisburg United Methodist Church in Preble County the first of July. Sharon Kunselman is a graduate of United Theological Seminary, and will be appointed to Antioch United Methodist Church in Trotwood, where she will begin serving the first of July. Sharon has been serving here at St. Andrew for the past two years. Derick Latimer continues working and serving with the Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church. I work with two others who are currently in the Ministry Inquiry Process, Kerry Noble and Steven Reinhart. Kerry is

currently working with us here at St. Andrew, and Steven is serving the

Lumberton and New Jasper United Methodist Churches. Kerry and Steven are currently in the Ministry Inquiry Process. It is a great joy and blessing to be able to walk beside individuals as they seek to discern the way in which God is calling them to

Sunday, July 14, 2013

10:30 am Worship Service with Bishop Palmer

On Saturday, our celebration will begin with fellowship activities for the whole family in our lovely back yard: music, games, the planting of memorial trees, assem-bling a time capsule, and a delicious catered meal at no charge to our congregation and guests are the activities planned. Past pastors and student associates will be among our special guests for this day's activities. Historical pictures and testimonies will be on display inside the church.

On Sunday, we are blessed to be led in worship by Bishop Gregory Palmer. Our worship will be en-riched by your participation, since you have been and are a part of God’s ministry at St. Andrew over the years. We would love to have you join us in praising the Lord for all that He has done.

Your donations are much appreciated to help fund these activities. Please mark your gifts : 50th Anniversary and place them in the offering plate or in the church office. o

Fifty years is a wonderful milestone. Our celebration is just the beginning as we continue to look forward to how we can realize our potential as disciples of Christ in the next fifty years! - Stay tuned for more opportunities

Martha's Closet Jerry Sedlacek STARS took a tour of the Wesley Center in May and saw how our donations are used

by their food pantry and clothing boutique. We were told the need for food is greatest at the end of the month when food stamps and money run out. The need for food and clothing continue to be great so please be generous with your donations in June. The red wagon will be placed in the Atrium on Sun-day, 6/2, as a reminder of our food collection on Sunday, 6/9.

Back To School 2013 It is the time of year to remind eve-ryone we will be supplying school supplies for Fairbrook Elementary School and Students from Wesley Commu-nity Center. The list for each group will be posted later this summer. Watch for infor-mation in bulletins and announcements. We are tentatively looking at an August 11th drop off deadline for supplies. Any ques-tions, give Sharon Baxter a call. 426-8256

St. Paul Luncheon On Tuesday, July 16th it is St. An-drew’s turn to pro-vide the meal at St. Paul Church in East Dayton. This is al-ways a fun event and a good chance to live out our faith. Help is needed—six to eight people to serve, and cookie bakers to provide dessert. Watch for a sign-up sheet. Call Jane Henry at 426-8428 with any questions or to volunteer.

From your Hospitality Team Leader: Karen Muller

We recently held a training ses-sion for our Welcome Team Members, and our new Welcome Center formally operated for the first time on Sunday, May 26th. As we have been develop-ing and reshaping our Welcome Team Ministry I’d like to share with you our specific purpose.

To create a wonderfully warm and welcoming envi-ronment for everyone who steps through our church doors.

To greet and welcome every guest with a genuine smile and help every guest easily find their way to the wor-ship celebration, with joy filled hearts ready to receive God’s words and charge for their life.

To serve with the utmost ex-cellence in a way that shows all attendees they are deeply cared for.

What we’ve come to realize is that wel-coming and church hospitality is not the job or responsibility of a few, but it is a way we all live our lives and share our-selves with others. One of the first priorities of the Welcome Team Ministry is to focus on how we welcome and greet our members and guests. You may have seen some changes in the atrium over the past few weeks with the addi-tion of our new Welcome Center that is in memory of Frances and Ernie Stewart. Here you will find information about our many ministry teams, signup sheets for special events, chil-dren’s worship activity bags, visitor welcome bags and team members eager and willing to help our members and guests. We believe the key to our minis-try success is found in our abil-ity to serve with sincere hearts and selfless compassion. It gives us the opportunity to es-

tablish new relationships and sustain existing ones. We be-lieve that this kind of Missional Hospitality honors God and serves people expecting nothing in return.

If you are interested in joining the Welcome Team Ministry, contact Karen Muller at 427-3465, [email protected] or Marilyn Hackett at 429-2939. Training will be provided for all Welcome Team Members. A group Welcome Team training event will be held in mid Au-gust.

St. Andrew has been given the unique opportunity to share our story with the entire West Ohio Annual Conference. Each year dur-ing our business sessions, stories are shared in the form of a video narrative. These video narratives are intended to offer encourage-ment to other churches that may be undergoing similar experi-ences.

During the past several years we have undergone tremendous transformation, and within the past year, there have been numer-ous breakthroughs as the people of God here at St. Andrew have been unleashed. At the very heart of the transformation is the inten-tional prayer focus. We had nu-merous small groups engage the Martha Grace Reese study, Un-binding Your Heart. The church as a whole entered into a sermon se-ries focused on the Unbinding se-ries. We took the opportunity to be with Mrs. Reese for a workshop and special presentation during Lakeside Annual Conference. Ad-ditionally, we participated in a day with Terry Teykl, where he chal-lenged us to be a “Presence Based Church.” Such a church is one that is attracting the presence of God, and where God is welcomed and honored above all else. We invited Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, our West Ohio Conference Director of Con-nectional and Missional Church Initiatives, to come to St. Andrew and join with us in our prayer walking.

The story is a “Once upon a time…” narrative. When I think back to where we were five years ago, and then reflect upon every-thing we have been through, it is undeniable the way in which God has been moving here at St. An-drew.

The first breakthrough that I identify is the “Holy Spirit peace” that we are living in today. There is a sense of unity and common purpose among the Body of Christ at St. Andrew.

The second breakthrough that I lift before you is the way in which we have been bathing the church in prayer, or as Terry Teykl put it, the way that we have become a “Presence Based Church.” If it were not for these elements, I don’t believe we would be experiencing the other break-throughs that have been, and are occurring.

We have become an outwardly fo-cused church. I think about the ministry with the Independent Scholars at Wright State, Manna Bag ministry, Target Dayton, Wesley Center, St. Paul United Methodist Church. We also have regular ongoing outreaches to the community through our Back to School ministry, Jackson Area Ministries seed collection, Thanks-giving sharing, and Christmas Adopt-a-Family. We provide resi-dents in our area with help from our Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. We open the church to the com-munity through our Annual Ba-zaar, and special occasions, such as the Red Bird Mission craft show. We are in a covenant part-nership with Gaston Ntambo, the pilot of the Wings of the Morning Ministry in the Democratic Repub-lic of the Congo. We reach out when special opportunities arise. In 2012, St. Andrew gave beyond our connectional ministries an additional $21,000.00. These of-ferings supported efforts, such as Hurricane Sandy Relief, and to-wards the purchase of the new airplane for the Wings of the Morning Ministry. We have come together to journey to the 4 Cor-ners Native American Ministry site at Shiprock, New Mexico to be the very hands and feet of Christ to people in special need. While there, we built three ramps which met the special needs of the fami-

lies, especially Velma, whom we affectionately called Grandma (as she was 101 when we were there.)

Our Wednesday Evening Ministry thrives. Each of the classes has grown with new opportunities. We joyfully and gratefully celebrate with the ministry of the Art Ex-plorers Club. The passion and vi-tality of this group is evidence of an amazing work of God. There are over 20 children who regularly participate, along with 10 or so adults who love them. The Young Adult ministry is thriving and growing. They have an intimacy and connection that is inspiring. Our nursery has been blessed ex-travagantly. We celebrated with four families as they welcomed their children into the world this past year. During the past five years, our nursery nearly doubled in size, and we added the “Infant Care Room”. It is specially outfit-ted with everything you need for a baby and mom or dad. There’s a live broadcast of the service, so parents can tend to a baby and still participate in the worship celebrations.

Our worship services provide peo-ple of all backgrounds the oppor-tunity to worship and praise God in the style that they are comfort-able with. The three services are all vital expressions of worship and praise. In particular, The As-cent (our contemporary service) has grown in amazing ways. The music is uplifting and energetic, the message presented in a con-temporary style, testimonies and prayer are encouraged and vital. Everything has been done to make families and their children of every age welcome and a part of this service.

God IS moving at St. Andrew, re-newing our hearts and our minds as we seek to serve Him faithfully. Personally, I am thankful for these past five years of ministry that I have shared with you. In July, we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of St. Andrew. I know that we are all waiting to see what new break-throughs God will bring to us.
