Does anyone in Winton know any surviving

members of the Cumming family?

Dear Editor,

I am a committee member of the Sydney based 460

Squadron Veterans & Friends Group.

Flight Sergeant Allen Boyce Cumming, born in Oakey

Qld on 13 January 1913 and served with 460 Sqn.

He was the Bomb Aimer in a Lancaster that was shot

down over Germany on 23/24 September 1943, with all

seven crew killed in action. Allen is buried with his crew

mates in Reichswald Forest Cemetery in Germany. The

crash-site has only now been located, so the team who

found it are seeking family members of the crew to bring

closure. In his service record (Service Number: 414338)

on www.ww2roll.gov.au, it is noted that his name is on

the Roll of Honour in Winton Qld. It may pique the

interest of your readers to note that Lancaster G for

George which is on display in the Australian War

Memorial also flew on that night's operation to

Mannheim.

Thank you and kind regards,

MEDIA RELEASE

WINTON’S OUTBACK FESTIVAL DONATES $30,000 TO QUEENSLAND MILITARY WELFARE FUNDS

Winton’s famous Outback Festival has donated $30,000 to three key Queensland military charities which helps soldiers and their families in need of support.

Outback Festival Coordinator Robyn Stephens OAM said the donations were raised at this year’s Sunset Extravaganza Charity Dinner held during the September festival.

“It makes me very proud that the Winton community, despite being in the midst of such a prolonged drought, can help our soldiers and their families,” said Mrs. Stephens.

“Winton has a very special place in our country’s military history by contributing one of the largest numbers of enlistments per head of population anywhere in Australia, with almost 600 local boys leaving to join the war effort in 1914.”

Earlier this week, Mrs. Stephens presented $10,000 cheques to the Welfare Sections of both 7th Brigade (Brisbane) and the Australian Special Air Service Association, Queensland Branch. She will present a $10,000 cheque to the 3rd Brigade (Townsville) next month.

The Outback Festival’s military advisor, Alan Bowen OAM said the donations would help soldiers in a meaningful way. Although the Department of Defence and Department of Veterans Affairs do a fantastic job looking after young veterans, they are often restricted by budget and entitlement constraints and are veteran focused not family focused.

“The donations will benefit young soldiers returning from active service who are in need of support to deal with the hidden wounds that no one else sees, the wounds to the families of our returned service men and women,” said Mr. Bowen. A part of the donated money will also help the families of those soldiers who are deployed in war zones throughout Afghanistan and Iraq. On behalf of the soldiers and their families I would like to say a huge thank you to the Winton Community for their enormous generosity despite going through harsh times themselves.

The biennial Outback Festival holds a charity fundraiser as part of its five days of Outback sporting and cultural events.

“We wanted to do something very special this year to mark the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli,” said Mrs. Stephens. Around 300 people attended the festival’s Sunset Extravaganza Charity Dinner held under the stars at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs (AAOD) natural history museum, located on a dramatic mesa 24km outside Winton.

The dinner featured a charity auction, a video message from Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, a guard provided by members of 2/14 LH (QMI), vehicles from 2 Cav Regiment and members of the Historical Group of the 2nd / 14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) and the New Zealand Mounted Infantry who provided soldiers dressed in WW1 uniforms mounted on horseback.

Mrs. Stephens said she was proud to be part of a community which helped others in need, despite its own challenges of being affected by its third consecutive year of prolonged drought, plus its Waltzing Matilda Centre being lost to fire in June.

“We have received a lot of support regarding our plans to rebuild the Waltzing Matilda Centre bigger and better than before, so to help our soldiers and their families in this special centenary year feels just great,” she said.

For further information please contact Robyn Stephens. Mob: 0429 806 140 www.outbackfestival.com.au

COUNCIL NEWS

‘Godly sorrow produces repentance

leading to salvation.’

2 Corinthians 7:10 NKJV The word ‘repent’ means to acknowledge your

sin before God, turn from it, seek God’s

forgiveness, and start living differently.

It means doing an about-face turn and heading in

the opposite direction. If you go 20 km down the

road in the wrong direction, it requires doing a

U-turn and coming 20 km back. At first this can

seem discouraging.

But it’s profitable, because next time you’ll

think twice about where you’re headed.

Repentance sometimes means making restitution

to others.

Zacchaeus was a tax collector who got rich by

overcharging people. But after he met Jesus he

said, ‘If I have cheated anyone, I will pay back

four times as much.’ (Luke 19:8 GNT) God is

more than willing to forgive you, but He may

allow you to experience the painful

consequences of your sin in order to motivate

you towards obedience. ‘No discipline is

enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful!

But afterward there will be a peaceful

harvest of right living for those who are trained

in this way.’ (Hebrews 12:11 NLT)

Satan will try to tell you that you are beyond the

reach of God’s grace, but you’re not.

The Prodigal Son wasted his inheritance and

ended up in a pigsty.

But the day he decided to come back home, his

father ran to meet him and restored him to full

sonship in the family.

And God will do that for you too. ‘Let the

wicked change their ways and banish the very

thought of doing wrong.

Let them turn to the Lord that He may have

mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for He will

forgive generously.’ (Isaiah 55:7 NLT)
