Talk Of The Town

Easy Being GreenREMEMBER when “going green” was a phrase reserved largely for dreadlocked hippies in hemp clothing? Before climate change and carbon footprints were part of the everyday vernacular? Even then, our city’s administration was ahead of the curve… that’s right, we’ve been critical of our officials in these pages, but we give props where props are due. And not just to our city officials… there’s a beautiful synergy in this town between politicians, busi-ness owners, restaurateurs, and residents all working toward a common goal: creating a sustain-able future. The Green Fair hap-pening from 10am to 4pm at Con-vention Hall on April 13 might be considered a culmination of so many forward-thinking efforts.

“Sustainability has been a focus for probably about 30 years,” Mayor Ed Mahaney told Continued On Page 14 ?

us, explaining that the city’s envi-ronmental commission has been a major catalyst for increased awareness regarding the impor-tance of maintaining a healthy balance between the natural world and human life.

The benchmark accomplish-ments have been many. There was the water conservation program which made low-flow showerheads and toilets avail-able to residents. There was the building of the desalination plant, still the only one of its kind in the state, during Mayor Mahaney’s first administration, between 1995 and 1998. And there have been tree-planting programs, anti-idling enforcement cam-paigns, efforts to use recycled mulch in local gardens, the birth of community paper-shredding days, the installation of energy-saving appliances in public build-ings that lowered the city’s electric bill by approximately $17,000…

the list is extensive and even a bit overwhelming.

By 2011, the establishment of a nonprofit certification pro-gram called Sustainable Jersey — meant to recognize municipal-ities doing such work, and to pro-vide training and financial incen-tives for those wanting to do more — had led Mayor Mahaney and the city council to put together a green team, comprised of 21 pro-active residents. The group was responsible for cataloging the city’s green accomplishments to date so that they might be pre-sented to Sustainable Jersey. That same year, Cape May’s first formal year of participation, the city was awarded the organization’s high-est honor, a silver designation. In 2012, it achieved the same. “They are one of the elite,” we were told by Sustainable Jersey represen-tative Kristy Ranieri. “Cape May

Oyster Bay’s Hot New BarWE LOVE the new 28-seater bar at Oyster Bay and we think you will, too. The restaurant, on Lafayette Street (opposite Acme), has enjoyed a loyal fol-lowing for years, but we think this expansion will attract a new group of people eager to try a buzzy new bar scene. On Saturday night we bumped into Bill Briggs and Jenny Cupp, who said, “Don’t you just love this?” Then Tom and Nancy O’Hara came in with their fam-ily and feasted on a whole bunch of goodies from the bar menu. More and more people are choosing to eat dinner at a bar, rather than a dining room, so this is a smart move, and a great addition to the town.

Go, Ben, Go!OUR Historical Editor, Ben Miller, is down 50 pounds in his campaign to lose over 200 pounds and raise donations for local food banks along the way, which he began just 90 days ago.

High School Shout-OutLocal Eagle Scout and Lower Cape May Regional High School senior Jackson K. Von Sav-age sent us a lovely letter in the hopes we would acknowlege the generosity of Cape Resorts’ Co-Managing Partner Curtis Bashaw, who hosted 15 mem-bers of LCMR’s Future Busi-ness Leaders of America Club at Congress Hall. “We are all grate-ful to Mr. Bashaw for his time and valuable insights that we’ll be able to soon apply practically once we complete our formal education and enter our respec-tive fields,” Jackson wrote.

Our Hot New NeighborThe cool women’s clothing bou-tique, People People, will open in its new Sunset Boulevard loca-tion this Saturday.

This copper-top bar is a thing of the past... check out Oyster Bay’s new renovation; they’ve opened for the season.

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

is a star.” It’s likely why the orga-nization has sought out Mayor Mahaney to join their board, along with four other New Jersey mayors, a position he’s accepted. Out of 566 municipalities in the state, only 113 are certified, and only 11 of these are labeled silver.

But Cape May isn’t slowing down when it comes to going green. The honors come on the heels of more exciting develop-ments, like the city-wide move to single-stream recycling that was put into place last Monday, or the work the city’s construction office is doing to counsel people under-taking construction projects on the most responsible building materials. Or the installation of the wind turbine being worked on this week at Cape May City Elementary, while the kids are on spring break. The city got a grant for it in 2011, not only in order to reduce the school’s energy costs but to open young eyes to the importance of alternative

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Carol Laube of North Haledon, NJ.

How long have you been coming to Cape May? About 34 or 33 years.

What do you like about it? What don’t I like about Cape May? I like everything! My hus-band says that I could even do a Cape May commercial.

What’s your favorite thing about Cape May? That’s hard to say. I think it’s just the feeling that you get when you go there, it’s like a step back in time. I love the quaintness of it all.

Least favorite thing? The crowds.

What is your favorite res-taurant? It changes often. I think that right now it’s Ale-athea’s.

And your favorite store? Exit Zero!

What do you like about Exit Zero? I love a lot of the arti-cles, and all the info that you get about things such as upcoming events and restaurant specials.

What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t like that the color issues are so far and few between. I’m always waiting for it to come out. That probably sounds cheesy but it’s true!

What’s your T-shirt size? Extra-large, please.

energy, as operating the turbine will become an integral part of the curriculum.

And so many of these endeavors are being done with “free” money. “We’ve gotten over $200,000 worth of city improve-ments paid for by grants and rebates,” Mayor Mahaney told us. Over the last three years, Cape May has worked with the State Board of Public Utilities on an initiative called Direct Install. The city underwent an energy audit, and because it agreed to make more than 25 percent of the sug-gested improvements (you’ve probably noticed the solar panels on the beach patrol headquar-ters, for instance), not only was the cost of the audit rebated, but Direct Install footed the majority of the bill for the work. Now, more than 30 businesses in town are pursuing their own energy audits, and the city is working on extend-ing the same opportunity to home owners.

And these are just the projects that get mentioned at meetings of city council (mentioned to sparse

crowds, but mentioned nonethe-less). There are other under-the-radar movements afoot, like the building of a 1,600-square foot house on Roslyn Avenue in North Cape May that’s intended to be a near-zero energy home. Michael Sebright of Energy Reconsidered, Inc, based in Blue Bell, Pennsyl-vania, told us he’s working as the energy consultant for the project, but that all of the parties involved in its construction, includ-ing architect John Huber, have worked together from the begin-ning to create a home that will generate nothing in utility costs… think solar paneling and a sophis-ticated heat recovery ventilation system that introduces fresh air to a building in an efficient way. An electrical panel will monitor every circuit in the house, nick-named by those involved as “Exit Zero house,” sending a data feed to Michael’s office so that energy output can be analyzed.

“We’ve built several of these homes in the Philadelphia area,”

Talk Of The Town? From Page 14

Michael told us. “But this will be the first of its kind in the area, and we’re hoping the prototype will be replicated. There are 50 homes in that neighborhood in which the exact same thing could be put in place.”

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the work of some of the establishments in town, like the Mad Batter restaurant and Caroll Villa Hotel, with floors of sustainable bamboo, a bar made of recycled material and men’s rooms featuring waterless uri-nals, among other eco-friendly features. Or the work of Cape Resorts, which sources 80 per-cent of the produce for its restau-rants from its Beach Plum Farm. Or the work of the Cape May Bird Observatory and the Nature Cen-ter, who do great work promoting eco-tourism.

So, it makes sense that this city would be hosting the Green Fair on April 13. “There won’t be

vendors,” Mayor Mahaney told us. “We’re not trying to sell people something.” Instead, exhibitors will be on hand to entertain and educate. Look for best-selling authors, as well as representa-tives from Cape May Film Soci-ety, who will be showcasing some environmental movies, the Cape May Coast Guard Base, who will explain some of the ways they’ve made their base more energy-efficient, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, US Fish and Wildlife, The Cape May Nature Center, The Atlantic County Util-ity Authority, the Audubon Soci-ety and, of course, Sustainable Jersey. You’ll get tips for ways to make your own home more green, and you’ll enjoy the entertainment provided by the Turtle Singer and the Brian Height Quartet.

Local chef Jimmy Burton of the Rusty Nail will be on hand making some tasty, and sustain-able, treats. “The value to any resident is to come out and see how we maintain our quality of life through some simple steps,” Continued On Page 18 ?

Mayor Mahaney said. “The peo-ple here truly care about conser-vation, and this program will have something that everyone will appreciate and learn from.”

Down On The FarmSINCE we’re on quite a sustain-ability kick here, we would be remiss not to mention an excit-ing, sustainably-minded event happening in the Congress Hall Ballroom on April 18: Forum On The Green — Farm-To-Table Dinner.

The dinner is a part of this year’s Cape May Forum, a series of events which facilitate dis-cussion between Cape Mayans about a topic important to the community. This year’s theme, “Water Matters”, seems espe-cially pertinent for our neck of the woods. “Our mission is to bring speakers and experts who will benefit everyone, locals and tour-ists,” Cape May Forum President Ronnie Cohen told us. “This is an initiative that a number of people

in the community wanted to bring to Cape May, so now here we are, in our fourth year, and we have a few special things up our sleeve. We are partnering with National Geographic, we’re hosting our very first book club with the help of the Cape May County Library, and we’re partnering with a lot of local non-profit organizations, includ-ing the New Jersey Maritime Museum, who are sponsoring a lecture. We’re also inviting some renowned speakers.” Among these keynoters? West Cape May resident John Francis, otherwise known as the PlanetWalker, who was so abhorred by human treat-ment of the planet in the ’70s that he gave up traveling by motorized car for 22 years and walked the length of America.

The Farm-to-Table Dinner is one of the Forum’s biggest fund-raisers. “It began in our second year, when the topic was ‘The Pol-itics of Food in the 21st Century,’” Ronnie said. “People absolutely

Let’s Drink to April!

Talk Of The Town? From Page 16loved it, so we decided to make it yearly.”

The event, open to everyone, is a product of Cape May Forum’s partnership with Slow Food South Jersey, an organization that emphasizes the importance of eating local, fresh, and in-season food. “It will be delicious,” Ron-nie said. “We’re featuring Cape May oysters, scallops, fish, local cheeses and crackers, and local wines.”

Ronnie also told us that all of the evening’s produce will be coming from West Cape May’s 62-acre Beach Plum Farm, which provides the produce for all of the Cape Resorts restaurants (Ebbitt Room, Blue Pig Tavern, Tommy’s Folly, The Rusty Nail) so we caught up with head farmer/ manager Jaime Alvarez. But what’s on the evening’s menu, he told us, is yet to be decided. “The thing about this type of event,” he said, “is that whatever is grow-

ing well at the time of the dinner is what’s served. Judging by the things that we’re growing right now, you’ll probably see our greenhouse tomatoes. And you might see other vegetables, like parsley, carrots, turnips, beets, and lettuce.” A 3,000-square-foot greenhouse has increased the options. “Right now, and in the past couple of months, we have been growing all kinds of differ-ent things in there,” he said. “Dif-ferent varieties of lettuce, baby greens, and some spices, which are delivered to restaurants at least once a week.”

But no matter how broad or narrow your palette, Ronnie assured us, you’ll leave the Farm-To-Table Dinner satisfied. “We will have something for every-one,” she said. “We’ll even have vegan and vegetarian options. This dinner gives us a way to both contribute to the community and eat healthy, delicious food at the same time.”

So far, there are about 175 guests expected, and tickets

are still on sale at the Forum’s website, priced at $60. For more info, visit capemayforum.org.

After The StormWE OFTEN print pictures of our readers holding Exit Zero on white sandy beaches and picturesque mountaintops, but there’s one subscriber whose been reading his issues in a war zone.

At least, that’s how 59-year-old school teacher Mike Letso describes Lavalette, New Jersey, post Hurricane Sandy.

A lifelong surfer, Mike is comfortable in the water, but even he was terrified by the ocean that, during the storm, turned his home town into an unrecognizable mess. “Houses are upside down,” he said. “One was spun completely around. Many are splintered with noth-ing but a roof on them. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Mike and his wife, who chose not to evacuate, spent two days trapped inside their own house. “In retrospect, we were

ignorant,” he said. “We should have left. We watched the water go from a trickling down the street to a river. We were freaked out, and in total darkness. When we finally came out, we saw the devastation everywhere. There are places, just blocks away, where you can’t tell where the street used to be. It’s a reality check… one night can destroy everything.”

In addition to losing so many sentimental things — 50-year-old Christmas decorations, chil-dren’s toys Mike had hoped his grandkids would enjoy one day, all of his old music books — the couple lost three vehicles, as well as their plumbing, water and electricity, rendering their house unlivable… a reality, they say, that pales in comparison to that of so many neighbors. “I have survivor’s guilt,” Mike said. “We were some of the lucky ones.” Still, the Letsos hitched a ride out of town and took up residence

All Day and All night

Talk Of The Town? From Page 18with friends in Point Pleasant for four-and-a-half months.

But the week of St. Patrick’s Day, the couple returned home, the only ones on their street to do so. “I sat on the stoop after mid-night,” he said. “I felt like playing, so I took a big can of Guinness and the 1982 Fender F-75 I got for my high school graduation and played in the freezing cold. People ask why we don’t move, and it’s a good question. I actu-ally think Cape May is much nicer, but this is the place I know. The awful stench of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay still pervades everything. A coating of muck won’t wash away. The stench and gloom are still unbearable.”

Or at least it would be, if it weren’t for the solace Mike takes from surfing, songwriting, and one of his favorite pastimes, vis-iting Cape May. “The first time I went there was my wedding

night,” he told us. “My wife kept her dress on while we were on the promenade, eating funnel cake. It was beautiful.”

Now, the couple visits Cape May four or five times a year. Immediately following the storm, they spent a few nights at the Grand Hotel. “It was the most wonderful feeling to know Cape May wasn’t affected, espe-cially because we’d heard rumors that the town didn’t exist any-more. And recently, we wanted to go surfing. Because it’s so sad here, where you have to walk by mashed-up houses, we got up at dawn and drove to Queen Street. What a wonderful diversion.”

A diversion, Mike told us, that makes the road ahead feel just a bit less arduous. “Being in Cape May,” he said, “that’s the first time we’ve been able to think about something other than this tragedy. A drive down the Park-way, and we’re in a peaceful place.”

The UndertowTerry O’Brien’s weekly column... it’s about nothing and everything, all at the same time

IT IS a good thing I’m heading up that new magazine in Wildwood (The Wild Times); with mentions in three col-umns last week (Talk of the Town, Here’s To Your Health, Answer Lady)

Exit Zero might not be big enough for me any-more… (Yeah, yeah… I know I just set up 1,000 fat jokes… worth it!)

Twice was so nice we’re going to do it thrice; Beatles Night III! This time at The Bayshore Inn on Saturday, 4/20 (smoke ’em if you got ’em…), which we (The Love Me Dudes) think is going to be a GREAT room for a rock & roll show; rowdy, loud, unapolo-getic… like us! Thanks to Jim Linnington (whom you may remember from his “Top 10 Reasons to Hate Terry O’Brien” Mangia, Mangia ad a few years back) for bringing us in. You have chosen wisely. We’re going to kick North Cape May’s ass! In a peace-and-love-y, Beatles-y way, of course.

Cabanas bartendress Mary Sexton, for one, is extremely excited we’re playing the Bayshore because “I can get really drunk cuz’ I only live two blocks away.” Which is why the Beatles became a band in the first place.

Speaking of Cabanas, while I was in there last week for Singer Songwriter, I started to reminisce about the place which has been a pretty big part of my life these last 20 years. First as Cheetah’s (the legendary Gloria’s predates my arrival) with its chee-tah print bar stools and wallpaper. Then as the Shipwreck Saloon, where I spent the summer of 1995 singing five nights a week with Southwind (they wouldn’t let me join their Dyna-Floes blues band; too young and too white). Met Jack Wright there and kicked off my Exit Zero odyssey and logged several thousand hours of Terry O’ke time at Cabanas. Always, always have a good expe-rience there, no matter what it’s called (but

hopefully it remains Cabanas for a good, long time.)

While I’m being nostalgic, I also ran into former cast mate and band member Jim Maher during Singer Songwriter. The Maher’s have faced tribulations, but seem to have come out the other side. Jim and I shared many stages working with Tom Cupp’s theatre group in the ’00s, and he was the original rhythm guitarist (and clearly the most talented guy in the band) of The O’Brien Brother Band in 2000-2001.

Parker Smith (Ping!) Clarification of the Week: Parker took exception to my comment about Elaine’s a couple of weeks ago, so let me explain. No, it’s too much… let me sum up; I am very happy the Elaine’s dining room and theater underwent a complete overhaul and wish them nothing but the best moving forward, despite my checkered history there. I have grudgingly moved on. My comment was meant as a play on what we considered a “renovation” in the ’90s; a fresh coat of paint and a new extension cord. Zero percent offense meant. Drama queens…

Superhero of the Week: Me! I hit the Wildwood Pizza Hut for lunch a few weeks back (Mark Chamberlain, I had the salad bar, I swear! And… four slices), and as we arrived we found a gentlemen lying in the parking lot, copious amounts of blood dripping from his head. Lucky for him I had just completed my Morey’s Piers First Aid training and was able to keep him com-fortable until EMTs arrived. Lucky for me no one has yet guessed my secret identity. By day, humble haunted house manager. By night… KARAOKE MAN! (It’s like a real superhero but with slightly lower produc-tion values.) AND I killed a spi-der that night. All by myself.

Retraction of the Week: As regular readers know, Flying Fish owner Sue Lotozo and I had a bit of a tiff over an Animal Outreach item I wrote last year. And after I decided to publicly air our grievances (per Festivus tradition…) I then reported the nicely-placed barb she sent my way during Burns Supper in Jan-uary. Well, upon speaking with Sue at the super-secret mid-night concert at Exit Zero HQ last week, turns out I’d completely misconstrued her words and she had not meant to (hilariously) insult me at all. So, bygones. In my defense, it is this frothing, overworked imagination that has brought you karaoke-based murder mysteries and zombie-based Christmas stories.

New Gig of the Week: Was a small but mighty crowd that attended the debut of Terry O’ke at the Mad Batter last Tuesday; Rico Suave, Mary Hemenway, John Cooke, Chris South and Bill Caterini, a few bar patrons and a couple of Morey’s Piers co-workers. While lightly attended, it was still a good time. I believe there are plans to do another one in April, unless…

Apology of the Week: For some inexplicable reason I went full diva on the Mad Batter staff at the end of the night, something I never, ever, EVER do. Ever. Seri-ously. Ask anyone. I’m as easy-going as they come. All I can say

in my defense is that it was the end of a 16-hour day and… no, even that sounds lame. Instead, allow me to just say to Marta, Mike and Matt; I’m sorry.

Deadline kept me from reporting on Billy Joel Night, Wildwood this week (look for plenty next week), but if last Sunday’s rehearsal is any indi-cation, The Glass Houses are going to kick unholy ass. And while it’s been a bit of a bummer that so many of our open mic performers have dropped out, each one brings me closer to my dream of singing every song in a four-hour Billy Joel show.

North Beach Health Club Update: Well, um, there isn’t one this week since my sched-ule has kept me from making it in for a while, but that doesn’t mean I’m not seeing results. With semi-regular exercise and being more careful with my diet, I have dropped to 226 pounds. I have done this in the dead of winter without running around an amusement pier all day (and editing a new magazine all night), so I am encouraged; my 2012 low of 223 was achieved in August after 3 months of screaming around Ghost Ship. My “journey” (I know, I think that’s a lame word for it, too) started 1/1/12 at 252lbs. By 1/1/14 I’d like to be 199.5.

Rio Station Open Mic Thursday continues to be a fun get together. I wish a few more players would come our way, but I know last Thursday was tough with Stellar Mojo over in Wild-wood and Fuzzybone down at Carney’s. (On a side note, why didn’t the fire department just put up stickers at Carney’s say-ing, “IF YOU ENTER THESE PREMISES YOU WILL DIE A SLOW HORRIBLE AGONIZ-ING DEATH!” Might have been more subtle.)

Lastly this week, check out Mike Dempsey’s ’80s Night, which will run after Kiddy O’ke on Sunday nights starting June 30. Mike runs a great show and his bands are always full of killer musicians. So I ask all my kara-oke and open mic friends to go.

’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

LCMR Student Of The Week

«LOWER Cape May Regional High School senior Lindsey Harner of Cape May City is now shaving her head for St. Bal-

drick’s for the third consecutive year. St. Baldrick’s is an organization that raises money for childhood cancer research. Along with shav-ing their heads, participants also raise money for the cause. Harner’s grandfather was and is her inspiration for joining this cause after he was diagnosed with cancer. “I wanted to be bald with my grandfa-ther,” said Harner, when asked why she first shaved her head.

Along with St. Baldrick’s, Harner is also a varsity tennis player, a National Honor Society and Key Club member. Her parents, Lauren and Bill Harner III, continue to support her in whatever activity she pursues.

In the future, Harner hopes to attend Rowan University and major in elementary education.

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

the kind of casual brutality that made our nation great. So it was only a matter of time before our model was seen as the stroke of well-informed genius that it is, and the powers that be decided to extend it.

We will go slowly at first, with neigh-boring towns picked according to need. Government advisors have visited these places to answer questions, soothe egos and apply stout sticks to the side of stub-born heads, and we are ready to go. We are not seeking to make “Cape May” the brand a cookie-cutter template, I stress: there

WELL, I must say I am not surprised. Enraged, yes. Flattered, a little. Scandalized of course. But the decision by State

authorities to enlarge Cape May boundar-ies to encompass some of our neighbors makes sense, I am forced to admit.

After all, we are a small city whose name and reputation are known world-wide. We are financially responsible, cul-turally envied, aesthetically superior and really, just an all-round example of how a city should be run. It is no secret that every president of this esteemed nation pays us a secret visit soon after taking office, to ask some basic questions of Cape May’s “Council of Elders”, a body whose name cannot even be breathed aloud (oops). We gather in a place of such seclusion that only a handful of people even know of its existence (and if The Ebbitt Room is busy that night, we go to The Brown Room) and we respond to the trickiest questions with answers that mix old-fashioned common-sense with realpolitik and a little dash of

can only be one Cape May. And we cannot begin to hope that every other city will have the benefit of the remarkable crop of eccen-tric geniuses who wash up here and never leave (unless apprehended by international law enforcement agencies or mental health bodies).

But we will be remodeling these com-munities in our own image, and extend-ing city boundaries to gently embrace them. Ocean City will become Cape May Along The Shore, Stone Harbor will be Cape Maybe With A Little Work, Lower Township is henceforth Cape May Fool Some People, Wildwood will be Cape You Must Be Bloody Kidding But We’ll Go Along With It and Philly will be Cape Pigs May Fly Before This Place Will Be Any Good.

In time, with success, the state will be New Cape May and possibly the country will undergo a slight shift in branding and be known as The United States of Cape Mayrica. Of course, if it fails and these places sully the good name, Cape May itself is ready for a swift distancing itself from the experiment, and be renamed Cape Nay.

Book Gift Certificate GiveawayEvery week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company

Who are you? Madeline Schuhl.

Where are you from? I’ve lived in Cape May for the last nine years... I live in Victorian Towers.

What were you doing when we interrupted you? I was about to get my nails done, but I’m too early; they’re not open for the season yet!

Are you a big reader? I do read a lot of mystery books on my Kindle.

What’s the last book you read? It’s Murder, My Son! by Lau-ren Carr.

And what do you plan on purchasing with this certificate? My grandson is nine years old, and he loves to read, so I’ll let him pick something out.

Here’s To Your HealthA weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

duce Myelin and Sulfur, plus B6 to make neu-rotransmitters. The Mitochondria, the energy managers in each cell, need all this plus anti-antioxidants.

Supplements were the easiest and fastest way to add these critical nutrients in, but were they the best? Dr. Wahls decided to find out where they existed naturally. After all, human beings thrived and developed long before modern times. Where did early humans find their vitamins? Answer: In the food all around them. “There are 100s, possibly 1000s, of other compounds which science has yet to identify in food,” Dr. Wahls says. So getting a wide variety is essential to optimal health.

MOST of the time, food is just what we eat to stop the hunger and satisfy crav-ings. But for some people, like Dr. Terry Wahls, it’s the

difference between life and death. She was diagnosed with Progressive MS, a debilitating disease that cripples and eventually kills. So this brilliant doctor was staring at a not-so-slow decline into an early death. She went to the finest clinic and took all the prescribed drugs; the best that her profession could offer. She went from using a cane to a motorized wheelchair and the next step in the process would have been for her to be bed-ridden.

Dr. Wahls spent her evenings looking for answers. She started with fish oils, cre-atine, and co-enzyme Q 10a, and her symp-toms slowed but continued. She then found the IFM (Institute for Functional Medicine) which was doing research into brain biology. Turns out, we have trillions of connectors fir-ing off chemical reactions, and Myelin is the sheathing that protects those connections. MS attacks the Myelin. The brain needs cer-tain B Vitamins, Omega 3 and Iodine to pro-

Here is the breakdown of the way Terry started eating: Three cups (a plate full) of leafy greens like kale, parsley, and even green smothies, which lowers the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Three cups of sulfur-rich foods like cabbage, broccoli, cau-liflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, radishes, etc… also, onions, garlic, leaks and mush-rooms. Three cups of brightly colored vegeta-bles and fruits (for anti-oxidants), like beets, carrots, peppers, red cabbage, and berries and peaches. Then for omega 3s, wild salmon and herring. For protein, grass-fed beef. And organ meat for a potent shot of vitamins, co-enzyme, and minerals, like liver, heart, and sweet breads, once per week. Finally, seaweed (come on, you eat it at sushi). Seaweed has iodine, which removes toxins and metals and lowers the risk of prostate and breast cancer. Oh yea, no dairy or wheat gluten. Stop crying.

In 2011, Dr. Wahls was in a wheel chair. Three months after starting her diet she walked with a cane. One month later she walked without it. At five months she rode her bike for the first time in a decade. And the next year, she was riding a horse.

The Answer LadyWise answers to perplexing questions

THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quan-daries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a

query, write to [email protected] Answer LadyI’ve been seeing an awesome guy for

about six months now. We get along great, and I think it’s possible he is “the one.” We see each other almost every night, talk or text several times a day, and I’m crazy about him. It seems pretty obvious to me that he feels the same way. What’s the problem? I want to say “I love you,” but I feel like I should wait for him to say it first. Is that just old-fashioned and sexist? — Smitten

Dear SmittenNo, dear — it’s self-preservation. There

is a certain element of putting one’s neck on the chopping block when saying those three little words, for they convey such an ENOR-MOUS sentiment. You say you’re pretty cer-tain he feels the same way, but once those words are out there, and you’re only hearing crickets in return, well… it’s difficult to un-

say them. Let us only think about this when we’re contemplating saying “I love you,” or anything along those lines, for that matter: do we mean it? In other words, do you want to say it because that’s how you feel, or do you want to say it because you want to hear it in return? If you can stand the thought of crickets, say it, because the Answer Lady has three more important words for you: life is short. By the way, this goes for saying any-thing positive to anyone in our lives: “you always make me laugh/think/feel warm and

fuzzy/want to be a better person.” This kind of unexpected sentiment can truly make a person’s day; they are gifts to the recipients. Do you give gifts for the pleasure of it, or to get gifts in return? But the Answer Lady digresses: if you really want to cover your you-know-what, take your beau to Terry O’ke, and wait until you are both particu-larly engrossed in a very loud, enthusiastic performer. Say it then, and quietly. And if your beau seems a little freaked out, just say “I SAID, ‘there’s something on your SHOE.’”

Dear Answer LadyI’ve been dating a nice girl and I really

like her. THEN I met her sister... total fire-works, at least I think so. I’d hate to hurt my girlfriend, but what if….? — Torn

Dear TornThis happened to the Answer Lady! She

was dating a perfectly lovely fellow, and then met his better looking identical twin, pre-med student brother. He was even a better pool player — ugh! End your relationship with your girlfriend; if the sister is “the one,” you’ll find your way back to each other. (But probably not.)

“What a wonderful experience this was for the children,” Sheila told us. “Let me just say that after the finale, they wanted to do it again, and they were asking ‘What play are we doing next year?!’ Their enthusiasm was overwhelming.”

The performance was free to the public, but $550 was raised in donations that will go towards next year’s production. “I’m already making plans,” Sheila said, “but I can’t let that secret out yet!”

The Movie ColumnThis week, Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews this spring’s apocalyptic films

WELCOME spring! Flow-ers are blooming, and it’s a new season of warmth to usher in life reborn! Hey, here’s a

great idea. Why not go see a movie about the end of the world as we know it. Sure, this winter has been really cold and desolate, so why don’t we watch some expansive, earth-shattering death and destruction on the big screen to give us a true sense of despair.

There are a few movies out this season that focus on the untimely (or, perhaps to some zealots, overdue!) and utter destruc-tion of our planet. So buy some popcorn (and heck, put on that butter a little heavy — after all, this might be your last popcorn) and enjoy these fun end-time films!

Olympus Has Fallen tells the story of the White House under terrorist attack. This storyline has the President kidnapped as well. The consensus so far is that this flick is a bust despite having some true star power in Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart. The film seems to please action junkies but

not those of us who appreciate originality.World War Z is the story of a United

Nations agent who fights to stop a zombie epidemic. Brad Pitt is the agent. Wait. Brad Pitt? Is that the end of the line for zombie flicks? Or is it just the beginning? I am going to let you, fair reader, decide for yourself as you take in this one and get back to me.

Morgan Freeman also stars with Tom Cruise in the film Oblivion, which tells the

story of a veteran sent to another planet to destroy their race and harness all of their resources. Add to that a zombie movie called Evil Dead and there you have it — a virtual flowerbed of blood and destruction that will leave you whistling a spring time tune (weather and attacks of the undead permitting of course).

There are some other films coming out this spring, and those we will preview next week (this was a sort of “bad news, good news” two-part series). The Cape May Film Festival will be part of the environmental film festival coming up April 13 at Conven-tion Hall (see Talk of the Town on page 13 for more on that). Sure, you can see on TV what other regions of the country have been doing to save the environment, but why not come out and see what your neighbors are doing as well!

As a final note, please note that the dates of the Cape May Film Festival have changed this year. We will be hosting the film festival on October 25-27, 2013 at the Chalfonte Hotel. Visit capemayfilm.

It’s the end of the world as we know it... Brad Pitt’s in a zombie flick!

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Get Picture Perfect.

THERE will be a moment during your Cape May vacation when everyone is smiling, when their clothes are relatively clean and they’re standing in front of a

beautiful landmark. This is the moment you want to capture. Learn to take postcard-per-fect pictures with a photography workshop.

During the Victoria era, photography went from posed daguerreotypes done in the studio, to battlefield reports of the Civil War, to snapshots of the family vacation. Later, the Brownie, introduced in 1900, made it possible for everyone to take a picture, and today’s camera phones mean that a camera is always on hand. As technology improves, the quality of the pictures doesn’t always keep pace. Taking a great photograph is a chal-lenge, and photographer Nancy J. Ori says “photographing people is as much an art as working in landscape.” Ori has been leading photography workshops in Cape May for two decades, teaching photographers of all levels. In her portrait workshops, she teaches pho-tographers how to dress, arrange and control a group — a good lesson for life in general

“creative environment for several days.” She adopts a casual style that allows students to grow in creativity. Ori became a teacher through years of affiliation with the Ansel Adams Workshop in California and many New Jersey art centers. Although the content varies from workshop to workshop, each class will hone observational and technical skills, explore natural light and offer one-on-one time with the instructor. The workshops also offer time for fun... think wine and cheese receptions, walking tours and discussions with other talented artists. The workshops last from 3-5 days and cost $350-395.

Ori will teach “Creative Women: Devel-oping Photographic Style” from April 27 to May 2 for experienced photographers, and “Natural Light in Cape May” from May 2-5 for all levels. Her colleague, artist Gerry Heydt, will teach “Oil Painting in the Landscape” from May 2-5 for artists of all levels, with practical tips for capturing the beauty of the great outdoors. Participants are responsible for their own hotel, meals and transportation. Limited spaces remain; call 908-790-8820.

Next week: Visit Historic Cold Spring Village

— as well as how to “coordinate the lighting with the camera and flash settings.” The right background is also important, and Cape May offers plenty of choices.

In Ori’s workshops, photographers take pictures from dawn to midnight; Ori believes that all light has potential to create a great photograph. More important is the clarity that comes when an artist leaves the stresses of work and home and immerses herself in a

«DYNASTY is an affectionate girl whose been wondering why she’s all

alone since February, when she came to the shelter... she’s just a lovable lapdog, after all! Don’t let her size fool you... she’s got nothing but love. She needs a bit of socialization, but that will come easily. Dynasty can get along with some dogs, but she isn’t into cats. She’s also up to date on all vaccines and spayed. The adoption fee is only $95!

«CADBURY is a three-year-old, medium-sized pit bull mix with a big

personality who’d benefit with an active, outdoorsy owner. She’s so happy, you’d never know that she came to the shelter as an ema-ciated stray. Though she’ll need some train-ing, Cadbury is smart and already knows “sit.” She needs a home with kids older than seven, and no other cats or dogs, please... she wants you all to herself! The fee is $95.

«BUDDY is a younger guy that would love the chance to grow up in a home...

hopefully, your home. He’s a little nervous at first, but very friendly once he gets to know you. Buddy loves to play fetch, and would be eager to learn more. He needs a home without cats or other dogs, and if there are kids in the house, it’s best they be older children... Buddy is just a kid himself, after all! The adoption fee is $95.

«IBIS, along with his brother Ink (right) were brought in with the rest of their

litter, but everyone else has been adopted, and these guys are feeling left out. When Ibis first came to the shelter, he was sick with eye infections that cleared up, and his eyes — no a little odd looking — give him character! The adoption fee together is $70.

«FANTASIA came to the shelter just last month, and she’s terrified here.

Our hope is that someone shows this down-on-her-luck cutie how nice people can be. With a little patience and love, she could turn out to be the sweetest little girl you’ve ever met. The adoption fee is $70, a small price to pay for a new friend.

«INK is waiting with his brother Ibis (left) for a forever home... the rest of

their litter has already found one, and it’s only fair these (super sweet) little guys aren’t the odd cats out. We think it’s best they get to stay together. The adoption fee for both (incredibly cute) kittens is $70. Check them out for yourself.
