Ron Raymond’s CFL Newsletter WEEK #4 The CFL is entering week 4 of the 2010 campaign and the Bookmakers are winning the battle of the point spread after the first three weeks. Keep in mind, the oddsmakers understand the bettor’s mindset when handicapping their games and their first instinct is to consider the favor- ites on first glance of the lines. Therefore, let’s review the numbers thus far, the Favorites are 3-9-0 ATS and 5-7 SU after the first 3 weeks of the season. Advantage Bookmakers! The OVER/UNDER battle is pretty much even, and history has taught us, there’s most balance in the totals compared to the sides and point spread records. Home Teams are 6-6 ATS (against the spread) and SU (straight up) after the first 3 week and we have two teams who are streaking in the wrong direction. Edmonton has played well enough this season, but costly mistakes have given them a 0-3 SU record and for a team host- ing the Grey Cup this season, fans are not happy in the city of Champi- ons. Saskatchewan has shown they are a “bend but don’t break” type of team after three weeks, they held off Montreal in double overtime and needed a late 4 th quarter rally last weekend vs. Edmonton to enjoy a 3-0 record. The CFL is entering week 4 of the 2010 campaign and the Bookmakers are winning the battle of the point spread after the first three weeks. Keep in mind, the oddsmakers understand the bettor’s mindset when handicapping their games and their first instinct is to consider the favor-ites on first glance of the lines.

Edmonton has played well enough this season, but costly mistakes have given them a 0-3 SU record and for a team host-ing the Grey Cup this season, fans are not happy in the city of Champi-ons. Saskatchewan has shown they are a “bend but don’t break” type of team after three weeks, they held off Montreal in double overtime and needed a late 4th quarter rally last weekend vs. Edmonton to enjoy a 3-0 record.

Here are some interesting angles for both of these streaking teams entering week 4.

Whenever you have a home team (WPG) vs. an opponent who are 0-3 SU (EDM) to start a season between Week 1 to Week 4; the home side is 5-4 SU but 0-8-1 ATS since 1996.

Now, for a home team like Calgary this weekend that are facing a road foe (SSK) who are

3-0 SU to start a season between Week 1 to Week 4, the home team (CGY) is 4-2-1 SU, 6-1-0 and the OVER is 6-1-0 since 1996.

Enjoy Week 4 and keep in mind, the NFL is just a few weeks away!

Hamilton (52) vs. Montreal (-9.0) Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Game time : 7 : 30 PM

Ron’s Pick: UNDER 52.0 (2*)

Keys to selection: The Montreal Alouettes finally get to play a home game this season and it’s going to be versus an opponent in which they’ve dominated at home since 2002. In fact, the Alouettes are 10-0 SU vs. Hamilton in their last 10 games at Molson Stadium vs. the Tigercats and the last time Hamilton won in this location, was October 20th 2002 in a 29-26 victory. Offensively, the Alou-ettes are still a threatening team with Calvillo, Coburn and Cahoon, but they’ve shown a crack in the armor on defense! Montreal ranks 7th in the league in points against and rank last in sacks, which tells me they don’t put any pressure on the QB. If Kevin Glenn can get some time this Thursday and they can get DeAndra Cobb involved with the running game, Hamilton will be able to stay within the number. However, the fans will be jacked for this game and Hamilton has not done well on the road in their last 10 games, they are 2-8 SU as a road underdog, but shown they are able to keep it close with a 7-3-0 ATS record.

Here’s the thing that concerns me on betting the side on either teams. Montreal is coming off a 3 game road swing, their body clocks have been off for 3 weeks and rhythm can be a factor for them on offense. Plus, they might try to force some plays in front of their fans and it could backfire on them if they get too risky. Hamilton has played one road game this season and Bellefeuille will make you scratch your head with some of his decisions. UNDER is the call.

Page 10

Ron’s Pick: BC -2.5 (2*)

Keys to selection: The oddsmakers are anticipating a low scoring event in this one, that’s why they hung a 47.5 on the total. The Lions are due for an offensive explosion; they have too many weapons on offense to be held to only 4 touchdowns on the season after three weeks. Casey Printers seems to be playing a bit banged up the last few games and with some days rest between this game and their last lost vs. Montreal, could be what the doctor ordered for the Lions. The Lions and Argos have one thing in common, they know how to get into the red zone, but have to settle for too many field goals. The Argos have 9 field goals on the season, while the Lions have 8. Why am I siding with the Lions in this game? 3 reasons! I’m looking at the head to head matchups and it comes down to 3 key matchups;

QB vs. QB = EDGE Printers

Kicker vs. Kicker = Lions McCallum Defense vs. Defense = Edge Lions and their ball hawks.

Edmonton (55.0) vs. Winnipeg (-2.0) Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Game time : 6 : 30 PM

Ron’s Pick: Edmonton +2.0 (5* CFL GAME OF THE WEEK)

Keys to selection: The Edmonton Eskimos are 0-3 on the season, but they could easily be 2-1 or 3-0 on the year. The Eskimos have played against the Roughriders, Alouettes and Lions, while the Blue Bomb-ers have played the Ticats twice and Toronto. In my view, the Bombers are what I call a false favorite, and they are down one QB heading into this showdown with the Eskimos with Buck Pierce being declared out with a strained right knee, and Steven Jyles will get the nod. The Bombers have the worst defense in the league with points against and that’s understandable, considering their head coach Paul LaPolice is an offensive minded coach and most of their power rating points were scored in Week 1 vs. the Tiger cats. Edmonton has been playing good football, but their lack of concentration has turned the tide in some of their games in which they were in control. Campbell and Stamps have been Ricky Ray’s go to receivers, but they’ve dropped some important footballs in the last 2 weeks, that has cost their team some wins. Nev-ertheless, the Bombers weakness is their secondary and Ricky Ray should throw for well over 400 yards this week. Play on Edmonton as my 5* CFL GAME OF THE WEEK.

Page 12 Volume 1, Issue 4

Saskatchewan (54.5) vs. Calgary (2.0) Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Game time : 9 : 30 PM

Ron’s Pick: Calgary -2.0 (2*)

Keys to selection: The Saskatchewan Roughriders are playing some good football, but they’ve shown some weak-ness at times during games. The Riders are 3-0 on the season, but you have to consider, two of those wins took double overtime and a late Eskimos breakdown. Calgary on the other hand, very much impressive on the defensive side of the ball, however I’m not crazy about their receiv-ing core. Nevertheless, with a power running back like Jofferey Reynolds in the back field, they have the perfect balance. The Stamps are tough to beat at McMahon Stadium, they are 8-1-1 SU in their last 10 and the UNDER is 8-2-0 in those games. Furthermore, Calgary is 7-2- 1 SU vs. Western division foes in their last 10 and the UNDER is 8-2-0 in those contest.

Additionally, Calgary is another team who could be 3-0 on the season, but poor scheduling put them in a bad spot last week vs. Toronto. In fact, fatigue played a huge part in their 4th quarter breakdown offensively vs. the Argos, as Toronto won 27-24 in a rare Wednesday night game. Calgary played the Argos on 3 days rest, as they played the Hamilton Tigercats at Ivor Wynn Stadium Saturday afternoon!

Therefore, with 10 days rest since their lost vs. the Argos, look for the Stamps to pull through. However, it’s not a strong play for me, as I have too much respect for the Riders defense and Darian Durant.
