General Manager Update_____7

First of all, I would like thank Heather for her unwavering service to the BCCMC over the last three years. She and her family have decided to move back to Winnipeg, we wish them well on this new phase of their lives.

Please join me in welcoming Coreen Rodger Berrisford as our new manager. Coreen brings a wide range of experience to the position and I am confident that she will make an excellent manager.

The Commission has been busy reviewing our communications file and planning for this year’s field day. We are very aware of what can happen in the press and we want to be prepared if the need arises to respond to an event.

The field day will be held at the Research Farm on August 20th. To start the day we will host guests that are in BC for the NACREW Convention. It is shaping up to be an excellent day to get updated on farm events as well as socializing with your fellow growers.

The forecast for the 2019 crop remains much lower than last year, mainly due to frost damage. From what I have be told the damage varies greatly from bog to bog and variety to variety. Let’s hope for the best and produce the excellent quality fruit we are known for.

I look forward to seeing you at the field day.

Licensing - 2019All growers, producer vendors and agencies should now have received their respective license covering the

period from April 1, 2019 - March 31, 2020. Along with your license, you were asked to confirm acreage.

Please call, or email, Coreen if you have not received your license or if your acreage on record is incorrect.

The licensed agencies will be receiving a list of growers and producer vendors licensed with the

Commission.

Agencies will be reminded that they are not to accept cranberries from a grower unless that grower has a

valid license issued by the Commission.

The Commission Orders include:

A grower’s license authorizes a person to market the regulated product grown on his registered acreage or an

amount of regulated product as may be determined from time to time by the Commission, to a designated

agency.

Specifically, Part 4 and 5 of the Commission’s General Orders outlines license requirements and classifications:

License Classes

1. All persons engaged in the production, processing, packing or marketing of the regulated product are

required to register annually with the Commission and obtain a license annually issued by the

Commission.

(a) Persons engaged in production of the regulated product must obtain a Grower’s License;

(b) Persons engaged in production and marketing of the regulated product other than to a designated

agency, must obtain a Producer Vendor License;

(c) Persons engaged in processing, packing or marketing the regulated product produced by a grower

must obtain an Agency License.

License Qualifications

2. To qualify for a license:

(a) A grower must have registered his acreage of regulated product with the Commission, he must have

a valid contract with a designated agency and he may be required to demonstrate compliance

with a recognized food safety plan

(b) A producer vendor must have registered his acreage of regulated product with the Commission,

he must submit a marketing plan satisfactory to the Commission and may be required to

demonstrate that all aspects of producing, transporting, processing, storage and marketing the

regulated product are consistent with recognized food safety standards.

(c) An agency must be in compliance with all applicable provisions of Part 8 of these Orders.

Authorities and Limitations of Licenses

1. Grower License: A grower’s license authorizes a person to market the regulated product grown on his

registered acreage or an amount of regulated product as may be determined from time to time by

the Commission to a designated agency. A grower’s license does not permit the holder to process or store

the regulated product.

2. Producer Vendor License: A producer vendor license authorizes a person to market the regulated

product grown on his registered acreage or an amount of regulated product as may be determined

from time to time by the Commission. A producer vendor license does not permit the holder to receive,

transport, process, market or store, the regulated product, unless that regulated product was grown by the

licensee.

3. Agency License: An agency license authorizes a person to receive the regulated product from a

grower and to process, transport, market or store that product.

BCRFS - Open House June 5

Another successful Open House was held at the BC Cranberry Research Farm. As can be seen from the pictures below the event was not only educational but enjoyable as well. We are looking forward to another good turn out at the September Open House. But first...the Field Day on August 20th.

After more than 35 years in the agriculture and trade association management sectors, Terry Humfeld, Avondale, Pennsylvania, the Cranberry Institute’s (CI) Executive Director, is retiring at the end of this year. Terry announced his retirement to the CI board of directors in August 2018 and a search for a new executive director is currently underway.

Terry’s hometown is Beloit, Kansas and he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State University (KSU), where he also met his wife Gail. He has always been an avid KSU sports fan and follows their teams closely. His family was in the greenhouse business so he has always had a close connection to agriculture. His first job after graduation was as an extension agent for the University of Wisconsin and was based in Milwaukee, a role he held for 3 years. He saw his first cranberry harvest in central Wisconsin during that time. He has fond memories of that experience and never expected to finish his career in the cranberry industry.

After his time with UW extension and 3 years teaching at Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute, Terry managed a small bedding plant trade association for 8 years. Prior to joining CI in 2010, he worked for the Produce Marketing Association for over 17 years. Terry is a humble, quiet spoken guy but he brought professionalism, organization, communications, and a strong work ethic to the Cranberry Institute and he will be missed by many in the industry. He helped to foster a cooperative spirit with all the various organizations, created many new positive policies, helped industry organizations, handlers, and growers navigate the many challenges to our businesses, and leaves the organization in a very strong position for the future.

Terry and Gail have 5 grandchildren and they are looking forward to spending time spoiling them even more than they do now. In addition, they have plans for some extensive travel and Terry will be exploring volunteer activities with several local organizations. Terry also plans to work on his golf game a bit more.

Please help me wish Terry a happy retirement and if you know him personally, be sure to thank him for his dedicated service to the cranberry industry. He will be greatly missed!

A message from Coreen Rodger Berrisford

Allow me to start by sharing my appreciation for Heather; for all her guidance and organization to help

make this transition smooth for myself and the Commission. She has kindly offered to remain

available should the need arise. She has shared how much she has enjoyed working with the Commission and I am excited about stepping into the General Manager role. Like Heather, I'm originally from Manitoba. I grew up however, in the US, in California, Arizona and Colorado completing my B.Sc. in Farm and Ranch Management from Colorado State University before returning to Canada to do my M.Sc. in Agriculture and Applied Economics. Alberta Agriculture was my first career home where I worked for 10 years in Statistics, International Marketing and Policy. I moved to Alberta Environment where I worked for a year in the Strategic Planning and Policy Department then moved to B.C. After three years working for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in international marketing and industry development, I joined the Investment Agriculture Foundation. I worked at the Foundation for 15 years as Program Manager, Senior Program Manager and then Director of Client Relations. I'm enthusiastic about the opportunity to support cranberry growers and the Commission and am looking forward to the Field Day on August 20 at the Research Farm where I hope to meet many of you.

A message

from

Heather

As most of you probably already know, June 30th is my last day with the Commission. I would like

to thank everyone for their kindness and support these past few years. I have truly

enjoyed

my

time

with this industry. A very big thank you to the directors and Chair, Jack, for patiently

working

with

me, your guidance, and your friendships.

All the best to all of you and to the industry.
