Two-for-one twisting processTwo-for-one twisting combines two or more single yarns into one twisted yarn. Two turns are inserted into the yarns with just one revolution of the spindle. The yarns receive their first twist (1) between the yarn brake and the exit of the spindle rotor. The second twist (2) is received in the yarn balloon between the spindle rotor and the yarn balloon guide.

eco drive concept with . . .

eco drive concept The eco drive concept is characterised by using advanced friction reduction concepts also during machine start up and stop, whilst still maintaining perfect levels of twist in the yarn. Each machine can have up to 400 spindles, driven by just one common tangential belt. Depending on power requirements and number of spin-dles, either one or two energy-optimised drive motors can be used per machine.

The frequency inverters that control the spindle speed, the number of turns inserted into the yarn and take-up package building shapes can all be adjusted electroni-cally to meet any customer’s requirements. This means that manually changing the belt pulley on the motor is no longer necessary. Frequency inverters are especially useful to customers who are processing small lots and may need to alter their machine settings frequently.

Any yarn contamination is avoided by separating and isolat-ing the “textile contact area” from the spindle drive area.

Mechanical drive sectionA mechanical drive section, as illus-trated, with a 6“ eccentric cam can also be used.Traverse variation is an available option.

. . . servo drives and a central control terminal

Control terminalThe new terminal for machines with servo drive and an inver- ter main drive makes it possible to archive up to 1000 differ-ent yarn production data sets and, when needed, to activate them quickly. The following data is recorded and stored:

Spindle speeds including programmable initial start-up sequence Twist levels, twist direction and crossing angles Machine automatic stop when yarn length and/or running times have been reached Yarn reserve length and yarn position Yarn material details Parameters for take-up package shape and package density Notebook function for adding and saving all other mechanical machine settings

Servo driveThe new electronic servo drives were designed to meet the following needs:

Infinitely adjustable spindle speeds and twist levels. Easily adjustable optimum take-up package build, traverse length and traverse crossing angles. Electronically controlled anti-patterning device Maximum take-up speeds Oil-free, low maintenance construction

Cross wound take-up packagesCylindrical and conical cross wound take-up packages of 6“ (and 8“ for a spindle spacing of 296 mm) can be produced in formats of 3°30’, 4°20’ and 5°57’ up to a diameter of 300 mm.

Energy efficiency thanks to e-save spindle family

The Two-for-One spindle is the heart of the machine. The energy required and the quality of the twisted yarn produced are determined here. The e-save spindle family is available for machine types VTS-07 / -08 / -09 / -10 with other optimised spindle com-binations available for certain special yarn counts and twist ranges.

The advantages of these e-save spindle types are: Optimised yarn guidance using high grade wear resistant surface finishes Larger feed packages due to the optimised spindle pot design Minimal vibration thanks to the damping effect of the spin-dle pot mounting Automatic pot bottom cleaning achieved with optimised directional airflow Self-cleaning funnel-shaped yarn channel within the spin-dle rotor Reserve disc with special wear resistant surface finish Air channel for Volcojet – the semi-automatic pneumatic threading system for quick and easy threading of the yarn through the spindle. No additional manual work needed. Yarn brake easily adjustable for all yarn types Textile contact area isolated from spindle drive area there-fore avoiding any possible yarn contamination.

Feed package formatsAssembly wound feed packages measuring 6“, 7“ or 8” and also 2 single-end feed packages measuring 2 x 31/4“ and 2 x 4“ can be used in the standard height machine.10“ feeds and various 2 x 6“ feeds can be used in the low-ered spindle rail version.

eco spindle typesThe newly developed eco spindles create a new yarn balloon geometry that contributes to a reduction of up to 40% on energy costs compared to traditional spindles.

This spindle type series includes: VTS-07 eco VTS-08 eco VTS-09 eco

Optional handling optimisation . . .

The quality of the cross-wound take-up package depends to a large extent on take-up tension. Take up tension is a major factor in determining the hardness of the take-up package. The yarn guide rollers that influence take-up tension can be centrally adjusted to achieve a uniform setting along the whole machine length.

Central adjustmentsVery short times for changing machine settings can be achieved by using the central adjustment facility for setting the height of the yarn balloon guides and the deflection roller positions.

When the yarn balloon guides are centrally adjusted to a cer-tain height, variations in the height of the yarn balloon guides are avoided.Especially when using eco spindles, full energy savings are quicker and easier to achieve by using the central adjust-ment facility.

VolcojetThe Volcojet system has a more than 40 years proven track record as the Two-for-One spindle threading device.Yarn threading times are significantly reduced by using Volcojet.

Pressing down on the foot pedal stops the spindle rotor. As the foot pedal is pressed down even further, compressed air is released and the yarn is drawn through the spindle and brought upward around the side of the spindle pot. Here the yarn can be grasped easily by the operator. A rapid threading time is guaranteed every time.

10 CompactTwister

. . . to shorten . . .

Creels for packages and tubes Creel and storage facilities for complete packages and empty tubes are available in various configurations to reduce the amount of handling to a minimum.

Package conveyor beltFor heavy cross-wound take-up packages, high doffing frequency or long machines, a package conveyor belt allows significantly improved working conditions for the operative.Handling times are significantly reduced. Also the package conveyor belt can be used as an interim storage facility for the already twisted take-up packages.

Yarn reserveThe automatic transfer-tail device allows you to set the exact length of yarn that is initially wound onto the take-up package. This short length of yarn may be used later to join packages together. For block doffing, the servo traverse can be used to select an individual yarn reserve and yarn length.

Automatic yarn stop feeler lockIn the event of a machine stoppage or a power failure, the yarn stop feelers are automatically locked in their working position. This prevents the yarn stop feelers from dropping when the machine stops. When the machine restarts, the yarn stop feelers are released after a timed delay to avoid any yarn breaks as the machine gets back up to speed. This means that the automatic yarn stop feeler locking sys-tem is an important element in achieving quality twisted yarn production. Also each individual yarn stop feeler can be magnetically held in the ‘up’ position for easy reloading of the yarn feed package into the spindle pot.

2 x 6“ direct feed with TwinPackThis proven device for processing 2 x 6“ direct feeds with two spindle pots provides a number of advantages in addi-tion to eliminating the assembly winding process.

Individual yarn feed inlets with the same angle of inlet Even unwinding tensions No yarn remnants left on the feed packages Process safety due to the automatic spindle stop Easy package handling, especially during the threading up operation A short balloon limiter protects against yarn contamination Can be used for cylindrical tubes or cones 4°20’ and 5°57’ including bull nose cones Just the lower spindle pot only can be used for 8“ feeds and this will reduce both the balloon tension and the energy requirements

Alternative feed package sizes for lowered spindle rail machines Volkmann continues to provide the tested and proven 2 x 6“ direct feed from one spindle pot which gives a number of advantages in addition to eliminating the assembly winding process.

Cylindrical and conical tube types can be used Optional use of the Constant Lubritwist system for in-line lubrication of certain delicate fibre and yarn types during the twisting process 10“ assembly wound feed packages can be twisted on this lowered spindle rail version.

. . . conversion times

Add-on balloon limiterSome delicate fibres and sensitive yarns need to be twisted on a machine with a free balloon. However some of these yarns can be twisted on the same machine by using an Add-on balloon limiter together with the Constant-Lubritwist yarn lubrication system.

Using an Add-on balloon limiter will also extend the yarn count range so that coarser yarns can also be twisted. When twisting certain yarn counts and qualities, a substantial reduction in energy consumption and an increase in productivity can be achieved by using balloon limiters.

Twisted yarn and take-up package quality

CradleCross-wound take-up packages can be wound up to a maximum diameter of 300 mm.The Volkmann cradle design produces take-up packages with a very good shape and feel. It also has the well proven clip-on centring discs that help to prevent the formation of yarn laps.

Package lift-off (optional)When the take-up package is full or there is an end break, the take-up package is pneumatically lifted off the drive roller to avoid any unnecessary ongoing rubbing of the yarn. This happens following a short time delay. After the package has been lifted, it is very easy for the operative to see it and deal with it.

Cradle load relief system (optional)To produce soft-edge packages, extremely suitable for dyeing, the pneumatic cradle load relief system compensates for the ever increasing weight of the package so that the whole take-up package is wound up under consistent load and tension conditions.

New take-up geometryThe extended take-up triangle between the overfeed roller and the take-up package helps to provide an even more uniform yarn quality and a more consistent density within the take-up package. The new take-up geometry optimises both the regularity and the quality of the twisted yarn.Furthermore, the whole package density itself will be more regular from inside to outside and from side to side, which is advantageous for later processes such as package dyeing.

What's proven and what's newThe new Compact Twister has kept all the trusted and proven quality machine elements that come into direct con-tact with the yarn. Proven elements like the overfeed discs, the tailing device shaft, the traverse guides and the friction rollers have all been incorporated in the newly designed take-up geometry. The newly designed protection cover has the proven storage places.

Special application packages

We have put together the following application specific packages for you:

The Pneumatic PackageThe pneumatic package consists of a range of pneumatically assisted handling aids such as the proven Volcojet yarn threading system, the cradle lift-off and the cradle load relief system. They will make package handling easier and improve take-up package quality.

The Handling Package Operator efficiency is important and it can be improved quite easily by using add-on equipment. They have a positive influence on yarn quality, machine utilisation and energy consumption. An additional 2-package creel, a package conveyor belt, Volcojet for faster yarn threading and the centrally adjustable mechanism for setting the yarn balloon guide height and the deflection roller angle make machine set-up easier and faster. An improved working environment can also be achieved by installing suitable noise protection measures.

The Dyeing and Sewing Thread PackageWhen the machine is equipped with a mechanical gearbox, we can offer you spe-cialist equipment for optimising the take-up package for the next process. The centre-corrected traverse cam and the traverse variation option are extremely useful for some types of sewing thread production and also the production of soft edge packages for package dyeing. And the cradle load relief system means that cradle contact pressure can be adjusted to give even more regular take-up pack-ages for these critical end uses.
