Nagaraj. The lecture wasorganised by Institute of MediaStudies and Research in memoryof the noted journalist, K.S.Achyuthan.

Speaking on the nature ofnew media and technology,

Professor Nagarajobserved: “Technologyhas brought cyber culturewhich according to sciencefiction writer WilliamGibson is a consensualhallucination by millionsdaily. What it has createdis a virtual world that canbe accessed by anyone, anywhere and anytime. This is leading todisneyfication of thesociety.”

Juxtaposing Gandhianideals against the present-day media culture, he said:

CONVOCATION CEREMONY OFJOURNALISM STUDENTS AT BVB

“Gandhi believed that the purposeof media is to inform andeducate the masses. He neversaid it was to entertain. Butunfortunately today entertainmentdominates all spheres includingmedia.”

According to him, mediawhich is supposed to be the‘watchdog’ of society slowlybecame a ‘lapdog’ and now it ismore like a ‘mad-dog’ hoppingfrom one breaking news toanother.

“Gandhi too had faith intechnology but he was for self-reliant technology. But thepresent-day technologies areestablishing predatory economiesmaking humans sophisticatedslaves.” This, for him, steals thebasic liberty of human beings todream.

He also observed:“Surveillance on the cyber spaceis establishing a mass plastic/corporate culture. A newdiscipline is emerging because ofthis. It is nothing but creation of a‘social’ factory.”

The nature of moderntechnology, he feels, is that ofadvaita. “Therefore, its positive/negative use depends on theperson,” he concluded.

The inaugural ceremony waspresided by Shri. H.N. Suresh,Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan(BVB), Bengaluru. Shri. N.S.Sreedhara Murthy, Co-ordinator,P.G. Diploma in Journalism, BVBand Shri. M. Madhan Gopal, retired IAS officer graced theevent.

with Shri Achyuthan in whosememory the lecture wasorganised. “In your career youwould’ve come in contact withmany people, but only a few stayin your memory. Achyuthan is oneof them. I used to roam lengthand breadth of the State withhim,” he remembered.

Speaking about thecourse, students of the last batchmentioned: “the course is tightlydesigned and offered in a nutshell.Topics covered in the courserange from cinema, copyright law,the art of writing to corporatecommunication. As we all comefrom different backgrounds, themulti-disciplinary approach of thecourse suited all of us.”

If listening to the experiencesof senior journalists was enrichingfor one of the students, skillsgained through practical classesof visual media was beneficialfor another. Overall, the studentsfelt that the course providedknowledge and tools necessaryto make an entry into the field ofjournalism.
