Roger and Ardy Tunberg, longtime supporters of the TRF Education

Foundation, have established a specialendowment with the Foundation.

27 years ago, Roger was one of the founders of the TRF Education Foundation and has continued to be greatresource for the Foundation. Roger recalls how the TRF

Education Foundation started:In 1990, Superintendent Robert Duncaninvited nine graduates to meet with himand discuss forming an EducationFoundation. The nine graduates wereRoger Tunberg class of 1946, Dr. JohnSeaverson class of ‘65, Jane Mattson classof ‘67, Mark Naplin class of ‚‘72,DaleWennberg class of ‚‘60, DickBjorkman class of ‚‘52, Denise Nelsonclass of ‘84, and Paul Ihle class of ‚‘68.After discussions at a few meetings, allagreed it was a great idea with the purposeof generating income for other education-

al opportunities with no money going into the operation of the gen-eral school system. After a very short time discussing funding, theTRF Education Association surprised the Foundation with their con-fidence and gave the Foundation $10,000 from their dues tostart/continue the Thief River Falls Education Foundation.

Then, as president, Roger Tunberg, was instructed to write a letter tothe graduates of Lincoln High School, with the exception of the grad-uates from the 10 most recent years, to support the Foundation. Thealumni were very responsive and loyal. The Foundation receivedamounts of $10, $20, to $500 and even up to $10,000 from a greatgiving group of loyal alumni.

Roger and Ardy are very active in the community. Roger was anowner and operator of Tunberg Motor Company through 1998.Roger was involved in attracting new businesses to the communityand on various boards supporting the community.

Roger and Ardy continue to be an inspiration to the Thief River FallsEducation Foundation and now through their Endowment they willbe giving to both grants and scholarships annually.

Alternative SeatingAlternative Seating granted at Challenger Elementary School.

The Thief River Falls Education Foundation granted all 4th grade classrooms with Alternative seating. You might be asking yourself what is alternative yourself what is alternative seating and why is it a need?

Alternative seating is other options of seating for students other than traditional chairs. Some of the options include stools, scoop rockers, mats, balls, and many more.

When students are given some control and choice, they exhibit more positive behavior. It works on achieving control and management of theirbodies and attention. This helps clear students’ minds of distractions and helps them stay focused and on task.

According to theinpsiredtreehouse.com, “Physical activity is correlated with higher academic performance, better overall health, and improvedbehavior. Studies have found that short bursts of movement in the classroom contribute to better on-task behavior, with the most improvementseen in children who were the least on-task initially. Offering changes in positions and movement opportunities throughout the day provide theseshort bursts of activity. As therapists and teachers, we know that a multi-sensory approach to learning contributes to better learning outcomes, attention, and behavior. Research supports the idea that dynamic seating options can be used to improve attention in students. Just as adultsneed to get up and take a walk or pace the room while we think and brainstorm, kids also need outlets for moving and fidgeting during theschool day.”

When kids are taught to identify and honor their preferences for movement, fidgeting, and alternative positioning, they feel that their needs arebeing acknowledged, contributing to increased engagement and motivation in the classroom as well as an increased sense of communityamong the students.
