The EZ Guide To What’s Going On The who, what, when and where of Cape May’s social scene
thursday, december 8Cape may stage Presents This Wonderful LifeGet to know the inhabitants of Bedford Falls like never before in this one-man show. Lar-ry Daggett delivers a virtuoso performance mimicking the entire cast of characters in this homage to the classic Frank Capra film. Bring some tissues for the big finale. Tickets are $35 general admission, show starts at 8pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. For details, call Cape May Stage at 609-884-1341.
Candlelight hospitality night on the Washington street mallEach year the merchants on the mall open their doors, slash their prices, put out snacks and generally behave wonderfully as a way of saying thanks to their customers. Shops will be open late, and you might spot some carol-ers or even Claus himself. We recommend you knock out some of that holiday shopping – the Hamilton Mall won’t be nearly this fun. Event runs on Thursday and Friday, from 7 to 9pm.
friday, december 9Christmas in december At CabanasIt may be brisk outside, but that’s no reason not to enjoy a drink or two across from the beach during this annual holiday event. Stop by Cabanas at 6pm for complimentary food and drink – the cost of admission is a new, unwrapped toy, or a $5 donation to Family Promise of Cape May County. Don’t miss this chance to give back during the holiday season. For details, call Cabanas at 609-884-4800

For reservations, call East Lynne Theater Company at 609-884-5898.

MACy’S employees staged the first Thanks-giving Day Parade in New york in 1924, and it was so successful that they decided to make it an annual event. The only interruption in the parade’s history was from 1942-44, when Macy’s gave their parade balloons to the war effort since rubber was so scarce.
DR EMLEN Physick, upon graduation from medical school, chose a completely dif-ferent lifestyle. Instead of treating patients, he became a tenant farmer and animal breeder, devoting his time to the many animals he housed on the Physick estate and staying active in local civic affairs. Dr Physick was well known in Cape May for his gregarious and philanthropic nature. He had many friends and was credited with funding a number of local organizations, like the Cape May yacht Club. Ben Miller

ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restau-rant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with red curry seafood. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manu-facturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The EditorsIdeas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
EVERy time we’ve driven down Broadway in the past few weeks, we’ve wondered: What is going on with that billboard? you know which one we’re talking
about; it’s got the silhouette of a surfer pulling a gnarly cutback underneath the word UPDOG (if that is a word). In the fine, easy-to-miss print at the bottom is the Cabanas logo, so we figured we’d have George Kelly, Cabanas’ general manager (or “general damager,” as he says) put the mystery to rest. What is up, we asked, with the updog?
Turns out, Martini Beach was origi-nally using this ad space, but after they closed for the season, Cabanas decided to retain the billboard through the off-season. Their ad agency, Make It Pop, came up with the design, which is a nod to the restau-rant’s surf vibe. “We’ve basically rebranded Cabanas away from Chuckie-Cheese-goes-surfing to something a bit more grown-up,” George said. As for the meaning of updog? “That depends on which urban dictionary you’re looking in.” We pulled out our own urban dictionary and, suffice it to say, the definitions run the gamut. In the case of this sign, updog is simply shorthand for the slang phrase, “What’s up, dawg?” As a marketing tool, it seems to be working. “A lot of people are calling to ask about it,” George said. “Sometimes, we lie and make up stories about it.”
Speaking of Cabanas, it’s almost time for their 6th annual Christmas in December event, taking place at the bar on December 9. The evening will feature a Chinese auction and complimentary buffet all for a good cause. The cost of admission
is a new, unwrapped gift for a child at the Cape May Count Special Services School, or a $5 donation to the Family Promise organization. Not that you need incentive to give during this, the season of giving, but we have it on good authority that the drink specials will be, in typical Cabanas fashion, pretty rad, dawg.
IF THE West Cape May Christmas parade wasn’t enough to get the
Scrooge out of your system, there’s no help for you. Once again, the folks over at West Cape May borough, together with Parade Lady Charlotte daily, ensured that it was a spectacular….well, spectacle. Better yet, as far as we could see, everyone seemed to be on his or her best behavior. Well, maybe not by the time Santa rolled down Broadway, but close enough.
On the subject of the parade, by the way, we’d like to thank all of the shop visitors who dropped money into our jar on the counter here at Exit Zero Global Headquarters, with a special shout-out to the mystery man or woman who dropped in a $50 bill. We made three trips to the West Cape May borough hall to drop off your
donations, which totaled over $800. Not too shabby in just over three weeks’ time. Give yourselves a nice pat on the back.
WHILE we’re talking about show-stopping, crowd-attracting seasonal
events, get your tickets now (not later, NOW) for the Eighth Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, being held at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 26. As any regular reader of this periodical knows, this event is a grand old time featuring bagpipes, a sing-along, the poetry of Scotland’s own Robert Burns, haggis, and most importantly, men carousing in kilts. That alone is worth the measly $30 price tag, and it’s not too late to ask for tickets as a Christmas gift. And don’t fret if you can’t stomach haggis (get it – “stomach” haggis?), because the boys in the kitchen will also be whipping up fish ‘n’ chips, too. And you can’t tell us you’re busy on a Thursday night in January, so no excuses! We’ll see you there.
IF yOU’RE looking for a night out a little sooner, pencil in this Sunday,
December 12 for the Beef and Beer for dwight dunbracco. For those of you who don’t know Dwight, he is the manager over at the Ugly Mug and an all-around good guy, who was recently diagnosed with dia-betes. He is without medical insurance, so the beef and beer will help to raise money to defray the expenses of his recent hospital-ization, as well as the costs of his diabetic supplies. There will be door prizes and a Chinese auction, with items donated by all your favorite places around town, include your favorite publication. The benefit will be held at the Bolero Resort in Wildwood from noon-4pm. Contact the Mug at 884-3450 if you need more information.

My FRIEND commented leaving the theater, “If you have to remind yourself that this isn’t really Marilyn Monroe,
then the movie works.” And that might be exactly what
the Academy says if it honors actress Michelle Williams with an Oscar nomi-nation for her role as the Hollywood icon in the new f ilm My Week with Marilyn. What is so striking, beyond Williams’ mannerisms so reminiscent of Monroe, is the f ilm’s treatment of this sad and troubled celebrity.
The f ilm is about the time Colin Clark spent as an assistant director during the f ilming of The Prince and the Showgirl in 1956. Clark is played by Eddie Redmayne, who won the 2010 Tony Award for his per-formance in the play Red. The f ilm starred Monroe and Sir Laurence Olivier (played in this movie by Kenneth Branagh). In the story, Monroe befriends Clark, and the two have an emotional affair during the shooting of the f ilm. It is through Clark’s
calming inf luence that Monroe is able to stay focused and finish the f ilm.
Clark is infatuated with a wardrobe assistant named Lucy, who is played by Harry Potter star Emma Watson. I’m not
sure if this is exactly the f irst time I’ve seen Watson outside her role as Hermione Granger, but it has to be one of the f irst. And what f ilm is Judi Dench not in these days (here she plays actress Dame Sybil Thamdike)?
As historical narratives go, this f ilm is much better than J. Edgar, and as far as f ilm industry introspection, it is more moving than Hugo.
To those who say, “She wanted a life of fame and glory, she should have known what to expect,” see the movie. The f ilm’s portrayal of her insecurities, her entou-rage of opportunists, her uncertainty, fears… all brilliantly captured by a well-written script, beautiful scenes, and fan-tastic performances.
For a free ballot to vote for Oscar favorites at our 2012 Pre-Oscar Party (February 26 at Mad Batter), be the f irst to email to capemayf [email protected] with the name of the next f ilm that Monroe shot immediately following The Prince and the Showgirl.

December 22. Night. Cape May Point.
THE killer moved stealthily through the stables at the Shady Acres Horse Farm, where the local bluebloods bridled their beasts. His suit was blood red
in the gloom, the white trim standing out as if on a gingerbread man. The wind howled against the wooden frame of the stables, rustled the surrounding trees violently. One tall streetlamp lit the frozen mud of the sta-ble throughway, flickered on and off, as if the light itself was too cold to commit.
From a distance he heard jingle bells. The killer peered through the slats of
the feeding trough and saw the sleigh round the bend and enter the light. Eight horses, tethered two-by-two, pulled a red carriage decked out in all sorts of Christmas finery; string of holly, plastic icicles, silver and gold tinsel. The horses themselves were lined top to bottom with bells. Hundreds of them. They must have enjoyed that.
They neared the stables with the quick-ened trot of an animal that knows it’s done dragging tourists around town to gape at bed and breakfasts for $50 a pop.
Atop the sleigh, on the driver’s bench, sat a severe-looking woman of about 50, pinched face framed by short hair and bro-ken by black glasses. She huddled against the cold, her slight frame nearly disappearing into her parka.
“Hyah!” she called and snapped the rid-ing crop across the rear of the last horse.
The horses pulled into the stable.“Easy now!” the woman cried and pulled
back on the bridle. The horses stopped, chuffed, beat the
ground. The woman set the crop on the seat, dismounted, closed and locked the gate. As she did so the killer crept out of the stall and up into the passenger seating of the sleigh.
The stable was large enough to easily fit the stables and horses. Each side was lined with six kennels for the animals. The walls were covered with all manner of horse-riding gear. It was roughly the size of a small barn.
The woman slammed a large slide bolt into the wall, applied a large U-lock, and climbed back into the sleigh. She reached for the crop. It was gone.
Thwap! The crop struck her across the face, part-
ing the skin, sending her glasses flying.“Hyah!” the killer shouted.
Merry Deathmas“Santa’s Slay,” chapter four of Terry O’Brien’s frighteningly good new short story
Thwap! The crop stung across her face a second
time. Stunned, silent, she brought her hands to her face and brought them away covered in blood.
The killer wasted no time. He held the crop between his teeth and grabbed her. The killer was big, powerfully built. He easily bundled and lifted the 95-pound woman over his head like a rag doll.
Now she whimpered. He took aim and threw her, forward. She
landed with a jingle in the center of the eight humiliated horses.
She found her voice. “PLEASE!”The killer took the crop from his mouth.
“Merry Christmas…”He grabbed the bridle and raised the crop.
He brought it down fiercely on the haunches of the last two animals, again and again, his arm a blur. The greats beasts bucked, tried to pull away, but he held the bridle fast.
“HyAH!” he cried again and continued punishing the animals.
Like a rippling wave their displeasure spread to the horses in front of them. They whinnied and neighed and began clomping their hooves on the frozen dirt.
“No! Help!” the woman shouted. “Plea…”Her breath was stomped out by a hoof on
her chest, the words died in her throat.“HyAH!”The stomping was rhythmic now, steady,
as the horses began to panic. Beneath them, the small woman was pounded mercilessly, hooves raining down on her arms, legs, her face. What was one moment a living, breath-ing human being in the next became 90 pounds of tenderized meat. Her ribs bent but didn’t break, penetrated her lungs and heart, her ribcage, sticking out like broken saplings. Her head deflated like a water balloon.
Adriana Rosensweig was very dead. The killer stopped beating the animals,
dismounted from the carriage, and went off into the cold, dark night.
Later. Cape May.
SANTA slid the last few pieces of the intri-cate device together, pulled out the tiny antenna, swaddled it in its silk, lacey blan-ket, and slowly, carefully lowered it into the stocking. The stocking said “Charles” on it in glue and glitter that gleamed in the gray light of deep night. Charles’ stocking was one of several that hung on the large hearth in the large house with the large yard and, most

likely, large mortgage. Next to Charles hung stocking for “Samantha,” “Ellen,” “Susanne” and “Kurt,” in descending chronological order, the entire Sutcliffe brood represented. Two of the three children were absent, grown, graduated and moved out, on to their real lives in parts yonder, scheduled to arrive the next day.
Upstairs the youngest, Kurt, slept in his room adorned with Michael Vick and Tim Tebow posters, like a lot of American 10th graders that didn’t love dogs, iPod earbuds on his pillow, some terrible rap-pop hybrid blaring forth, something by Eminem and Bruno Mars, or Kanye West and Rihanna, or MC Abbott and DJ Costello.
His mother, Charles’ wife, Samantha, slept in the room furthest down the upstairs hall, the flickering black-and-white light from her 48-inch plasma TV as it played Miracle on 34th Street unable to penetrate her Ambien and Chardonnay-induced slumber.
Other than that it was perfectly quiet. The house was big, as big as the Rappa-
port home, but different, more modern, more nouveau riche, as the Sutcliffe family was, Charles having invented some sort of Inter-net widget that landed them millions on an IPO in the go-go ‘90s of Bill Clinton’s Amer-ica. It sat in the Christian Admiral Estates, built in the footprint of the late, lamented Christian Admiral hotel, which brought a little F. Scott, West Egg boho to the little beach town some decades ago. Now, though, it was remembered mostly in postcards and in the thousands of pieces of china and sil-ver that inhabit a thousand different homes since being auctioned off in the days before demolition.
The tacky McMansions that now stood there were like graffiti on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Santa flipped on the small remote unit and backed out of the living room just as keys rattled in the front door. As the door swung open, Santa moved through the adjacent kitchen and into the screened in porch. He’d known the Sutcliffes, and for that matter the Rappaports and the lesbian Jewess Rosens-weig, who didn’t even BELIEVE in Christmas and yet still profited from it, long enough to know all the personal little things that mat-tered, like where they lived, what time they came home from work, where they liked to go for dinner. And what their alarm codes were.
So Santa tapped in the numbers mere seconds after Charles Sutcliffe and slid out the screen door and into the backyard, then

around to the front of the house, then finally across the street, by the dunes, at just such an angle to keep the fireplace in sight.
Inside, Charles Sutcliffe, fresh from a meeting in Orlando, Florida, shrugged off his coat and hat and placed them in the closet.
He set his briefcase on the small table on the foyer, cracked it open, fished a bunch of receipts out of his various pockets, and placed them in a manila folder inside the case. The receipts showed several dinners, car rentals and gas fill-ups, all the usual monetary trap-pings of a six-day business trip.
He did not have receipts for the hookers or the blow.
He set the case down next to the little table and made his way to the stairs. But something caught his eye.
“The heck…”On the very expensive mirror hanging
over the very expensive buffet in the foyer larger than most people’s living rooms was a note, printed in a swooshy, loosey-goosey font meant to exude sexiness.
“Go to the dining room…” Beneath it, attached with Scotch tape, was a stocking. Not a Christmas stocking, a sheer, silk stock-
been so hot for his wife for so long… and stumbled excitedly into the living room and the fireplace. Sticking out of the top of his stocking was a lacey, silky, frilly piece of cloth, barely there, really, some sort of exotic, sexy women’s underwear that always mysti-fied Charles.
He licked his lips and with shortened breath pulled up on the garment. With a tug it came loose. Something was rolled up inside it. Small, cylindrical. Charles stomch did somersault. Could it be… some kind of… (gulp)… toy?
He unwrapped the object. It was not a toy.Across the street, through a spyglass,
Santa watched Charles Sutcliffe pull the expensive silk thing from the stocking and examine it a moment. It only took a moment for the truth of the moment to settle in, which is when Santa pressed the button on the remote.
KA-BA-BOOM!The front of the house vanished in an
eruption of light and fire. The shockwave sent Santa flying backwards into the dunes. Bits of burning wood and other matter began

he felt a small pang at the recent memory of the hookers, but it had been so long since Samantha had shown him any womanly attention…
ing. Red. Sexy.In the dining room, hanging from the
chandelier that hung low over the dinner table, he found a similar note saying, “Go to the kitchen…” Attached to this note was the other red knee-high.
In the kitchen he found the garter belts. In the den he found the bustier. In the freezer the eight-inch stilettos.
The chill air of the freezer cooled his now sweaty face, little puffs of steam bounced off his brow. He felt a small pang at the recent memory of the hookers, but it had been so long since Samantha had shown him any womanly attention… he had no way of knowing this was waiting for him at home.
Of course, it seemed so unlike her because it was so unlike her. This had all been Santa’s doing, a little hide and seek to buy him enough time to get clear of the house, but Charles didn’t know that, nor would he as the last few seconds of his life ticked down.
Inside the freezer, which also served to noticeably cool the fire brewing in Charles’ pants, the last note said, “Now go to the stocking, bring the outfit upstairs…”
Charles did as directed, gathered the clothing in his now shaking arms… he had
to rain down around him.He patted at his smoldering beard,
half in shock; the blast was only meant to be a tenth as powerful, enough to take out Charles. Clearly there had been a miscalcu-lation. Clearly no one in the house could have survived such a blast.
Santa gathered himself, bundled against the wind roaring off the ocean 50 yards behind him, and left.
He was crying.
December 23. Morning. Cape May.
THERE are lots of ways the universe tells you that it’s just not going to be your day: wak-ing up with a severe nail-being-pounded-into-your-temple hangover while gagging on Wawa hoagie flavored burps of Italian meats and cured peppers, forgetting to set your clock forward/ back on the time switch and either running constantly behind or constantly ahead all day, and when all three of your phones start ringing and your police scanner goes all kablooey at 4am.
It was that last thing that greeted me on

this particular day, though the first two have also been known to afflict me regularly. At around 2am as I drifted off while watch-ing Justified on my laptop (Timo-thy Olyphant is what I want to be when I grow up… Timothy Olyphant that writes like Rob-ert Crais and sings like Michael Stipe), I thought I must have been dreaming the loud boom that rattled my windows. Turns out I wasn’t.
I should have known, right then, dream or no dream, that this big boom had some-thing to do with my investiga-tion. Because right now, at this moment, bad things were hap-pening, quickly, and I felt like my clock was an hour behind.
“I brought coffee,” Tim announced as he entered my office. Well, our office. I was still feeling a little proprietary..
“Thanks,” I answered.Lionel Jeffries, our first sus-
pect, since cleared, followed behind Tim.
“I brought Lionel,” Tim said.“I can see that. Morning,
Lionel.”He nodded at me, offered a
hand. I shook it.“That business earlier,” I
said, referencing my grilling him at police HQ, “that’s nothing personal…”
He waved me off, “Just doing your job. We’re cool.”
I nodded and slurped at the coffee. “you guys dating now or did Tim bring you for a reason?”
“Hilarious,” Tim replied. I thought it was okay for a
shade before 5am.“I have experience with
explosives,” Lionel said.“Really?” I asked, impressed.Lionel nodded. “Was an
ordnance disposal chief in the navy. I’ve also brought down a few buildings with my dad and pop-pop.”
I looked at Tim and nodded. “Great thinking, really good.”
“Thanks,” he replied. “Where are you?”
“After my scanner started
chirping I called Shawn… Offi-cer Austin to get the skinny, he confirmed the explosion at the Sutcliffe home. And while I’m talking to him he gets the call that another body was found at the horse ranch, Adriana Rosensweig. A quick Google confirmed they were both sit-ting members of Cape May City Council, like the late James Rap-paport. Don’t have to be a detec-tive to see it’s connected.”
Tim said, “That makes three dead, what about the other two?”
“Detective Curtis had units pick up Janice Rappaport,” I flushed a bit at the mention of her name, “and the Reverend Milo Binkley, they should both be in protective custody by now.”
“Jesus,” Tim said as he and Lionel sat, “seems like a week ago we were at Rappaports.”
“Right?” I said, “He’s been dead, like, 36 hours now. Rosens-weig and Sutcliffe are still warm. Well, technically. He’s more like a cinder, she’s more like frozen jelly, but… that’s the metaphor I’m going with. Cut me some slack. It’s 5am.”
We sipped coffee quietly for a few moments, then came a loud knock at the door. Tim and Lio-nel did not move.
“I’ll get it,” I said with mild exasperation.
Tim and Lionel smiled, shar-ing a moment. I got jealous. The detective as needy girlfriend.
“What’s the next step, bwana?” Tim asked as I moved around my desk to the door.
“Task force,” I said.“Task force?”“Task force,” I said with a
wink and opened the door.A debiltatingly cold wind
whooshed through my office. Thick flurries swarmed through the little spotlight over my door, made it hard to see. I held a shielding hand over my eyes and squinted into the light.
“Well I’ll be…”There, standing on my front
porch, stood, I kid you not, Santa Claus.

IFEEL fat. My bum is expanding by what feels like the hour (no, really, my coworkers had Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “I like Big Butts” playing for me when I arrived at work the other day.). My
thighs are growing. My face is pudgy. My boobs are big (okay, I’m not too upset about that one). But I am upset that I can barely wiggle into my fat-day jeans. (For you men out there, fat-day jeans are a real thing. Ask your girlfriend.)
I know what they say; it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, blah, blah. But right now, I will only find this comforting if you tell me this beholder is a fan of voluptuous — let’s go with voluptuous — tushes.
Sure, plenty of people gain weight this time of year, but my problem isn’t the sea-son; I haven’t been indulging in eggnog and Rudolph-shaped cookies. The reason I’m looking plump — let’s go with plump — is that I haven’t been waiting tables. As often as I complain about my job, it does keep a girl slim.
The biggest pain in a server’s rear end
— those customers who keep her running needlessly — are also the greatest thing for said server’s rear end. you know who you are. I bring you your meal and you ask for more napkins. I bring more napkins and you ask for more lemons. I bring more lemons and you ask for more salt. I bring salt and you ask for more(!) napkins. (What hap-pens to napkins in the restaurant world is a lot like what happens to socks in the dryer.) I never understand why these folks can’t manage to give me their list in its entirety, but I don’t complain. All of the hustle is better than Pilates; the pedometer I wore during one shift logged a full seven miles before night’s end.
Last year, wanting to take full advan-tage of this waitressing workout, I spent some tip money (okay, a LOT of tip money) on a pair of Reebok EasyTones, those shoes meant to firm the legs and butt 28 times more than the normal sneaker. (I know, I’m a sucker, but did you see the girl in the EasyTone commercial? Now that’s a tuchus worth working toward.) The shoes were hid-eous, but with bikini season looming, this didn’t stop me from bouncing around the dining room in my new purchase. “Would any of you folks like another drink?” I’d ask my tables, wanting an excuse to bounce toward the bar. “Of course you would!” (If I’d gotten commission based on how many little old ladies I had double-fisting glasses of Dewar’s, I could have just purchased a North Beach gym membership.)
But the shoes were a quick fix, and quick fixes rarely work. The Reeboks were recalled and, recently, I bid them farewell…along with my formerly petite derriere. So now, I’m staring down a long road of doing it the healthy way — exercise, portion con-trol... and plenty of elastic-waist pants.

The Answer LadyWise answers to perplexing questions
THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quan-daries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a
query, write to [email protected].
dear Answer Lady
it’s office party time, and once again i’m debating whether to come up with a fake ill-ness in order to avoid my husband’s idiot boss at their annual holiday dinner. the guy is a 20-something wiseass, and i just can’t deal with his smug attitude and know-it-all ways. don’t get me wrong – it’s a lovely dinner at the Lobster house, and my husband LoVEs his job and thinks his boss is just swell. But ugh, i’m getting annoyed just think-ing about it. thoughts? – the Good Wife Dear Wife
Gentle, reader, surely you are not seri-ously telling the Answer Lady that you can’t put up with some punk for two hours on an annual basis in exchange for a free dinner (and presumably drinks) at the Lobster House? Good grief – please tell your husband that the Answer Lady will gladly be his rent-a-wife
for the evening. Then again, the Answer Lady puts up 20-something punks on somewhat of a regular basis. Look, dear – if your husband loves his job (and it is a JOB, after all, a bless-ing in its own right in this day and age), you can certainly tolerate a know-it-all ONCE A yEAR with a smile on your face. Now settle down and eat your lobster. And remember the Answer Lady’s mantra when she’s deal-ing with a man she’d rather not deal with: “At least I’m not married to him, at least I’m not married to him, at least I’m not married
to him.” Repeat as needed. you’re welcome. dear Answer Lady
i work in a very large office and i pretty much keep to myself. i go in, do my work, and leave. i am civil to my colleagues, but not really close friends with any of them. our office hol-iday party is coming up and i am drEAdinG it. do i have to go? – nose to the Grindstone Dear Nose
None of us really HAS to do anything, do we? There are party people and there are non-party people, and never the twain shall meet. An office party is nirvana to some, akin to root canal to to others. In your case, perhaps this is something you can simply endure and chalk up to the cost of doing busi-ness – and of being a civilized person at the holidays. There is big difference between not being a party person and being downright anti-social. So make an appearance at your work function with a smile on your face, and then simply duck out at the earliest oppor-tunity. It’s one thing to have a reputation of being quiet or shy at work, but no one wants to be known as the office Scrooge, do they?

Chance Meetings Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
talking about her ex-boyfriend. In and of itself, that’s not a problem; we’ve all got our share of baggage. What concerned me was that this baggage wasn’t unpacked yet. In fact, as I figure it, Lana first contacted me only days after things ended with this other guy. Red flag! She then related a tale of a perceived slight, the wildly dysfunctional relationship they’d had all summer, and her plans for publicly messing with his already-messed-up head so that he’d feel
SNAKES. Spiders. Heights. The number 13. Most guys don’t fear this stuff. But you know what really shrivels our jewels and puckers our backsides?
The rabbit in the pot. A shrieking Glenn Close. The vengeful ex who overdramatizes everything so that she can justify wreaking havoc on us. In this case, I’ll call her Lana.
Lana is interesting and attractive. Based on her self-description – stubborn, always right, a huge geek, well-read, highly inquisitive, likes the ironic and the ridiculous, lives at the beach – some of my friends even thought she just might be my soulmate. Heck, before our date we were even quoting our favorite sci-fi shows to each other. And our dinner at the Mad Batter went pleasantly. Waiting for her at the bar was enjoyable, the food was good, the staff had no trouble moving us from a table in front of the band to somewhere quieter, and we got along quite well.
It was about a week later that the shriveling and puckering began. Lana spent more than an hour on the phone
like an idiot for wronging her and she’d feel better about herself.
At this point our phones disconnected. Lana might think I hung up on her, and that scares me a little, because I don’t want to be the next victim of her wrath. But truthfully, there was no way I was going to call her back, since by then I’d figured out that I wanted nothing to do with her. Ever. I’ve got quite enough troubles without having to worry about seeing a woman who’s going to dissect my every word and gesture and action, and then seek revenge if she doesn’t like what I’ve done or said. What guy needs that headache? There’s pressure to perform there that even Viagra can’t fix. Say the wrong thing, and spend the next year watching your back. Sorry, no.
This is the home stretch for “Chance Meetings.” Send an email to [email protected], and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. No baggage, no craziness, just dinner..

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
always found the “gamboling puppies” rou-tine a hoot when it turned out all right. We even had them filmed by a young German tourist who was in town on vacation, by the name of Riefenstahl. She made a glorious little documentary of our optimistic and neighborly torchlit parade, called “Triumph of the yes We Will.” I screen it sometimes in the D’Catur Mansion, and marvel at the intricate overhead shots of our marching citizenry. I was always a little puzzled by the overlaid sound-effect of marching feet, but
I LOVE a parade. In fact, I am of the opinion that not only should people be allowed to have one whenever they choose, but that they should be required
to take part in at least one a week. Of course, parades originated in Cape May, at least in the modern sense with f loats and bands and the like: obviously they had them in the very olden days, what with those ancient Greek lads wanting to march around naked and oiled after every victory (and in fact near-naked handsome lads and lasses are near the top of my Parade Rules And Regulations list). And there was a short time in the earlier half of the last century that that awful Hitler boy stole the idea for his Nuremberg Rallies from Cape May’s original and far better (in that it did not involve racial cleans-ing or genocide) Stimpson Lane Rallies, where once a year the good citizens of this town would gather by torchlight and march around the city boundaries, stopping to form amusing and relevant choreographed shapes. My favorite was the “unicorn,” and I
put it down to artistic f lair. I often wonder what happened to that enterprising lass.
The centerpiece of a good parade, of course, is the f loat. I don’t mind if this is a truck with performers on top, as part of an elaborate tableau showing a triptych of scenes where first the Lenape Indians welcomed us to their land, second we pur-chased that land in exchange for a hand-ful of beads and a Segway, and thirdly we hounded them off on the pretext of needing space to remodel the place, and promised we’d call them when it was done and they could come see the new décor.
But I truly believe that a parade f loat should BE the person. He or she can have little wheels as support, even an engine under there, but essentially must physically be the entity. Such as my Spanish Galleon Under Full Sail costume, which was 30 feet in diameter and had working cannons. Or my Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother effort, which was a motorized gin-soaked dress the length of a block, crowned with a diamond tiara. My calves were killing me by the end, but it was worth it.

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Winter at the Nature Center.
BEACH lovers have a saying, “Once you get sand in your shoes, you’ll always come back to the beach.” Perhaps that’s why we in Cape May think nothing
of a little sand in our shoes, or the car, or the house. We’re like dog lovers who don’t see the dog hair – sand is part of nature, a little reminder of a place we love.
Children who spend time at the Nature Center of Cape May carry that sentiment to the extreme. My kids think nothing of walking through muck into the squishy harbor sand to check out some creature, or the remnants of some creature, who looks interesting. When they’re done, they just hose off their shoes, wash their hands, and get on with their day. Nor do they worry about the weather – they bundle up when it’s cold, get wet when it rains, and sweat when it’s hot.
They don’t get this from me. I credit the Nature Center, an affiliate of New Jersey Audubon, and their outstanding children’s programs. That’s where my kids learned, at an early age, to appreciate the whole of nature, from the birds soaring in the sky to
the worms wiggling under the mud. They also learned that the beach doesn’t close for the winter. The light is different, and different animals make an appearance. Winter storms kick up all kinds of shells, along with flotsam and jetsam, making beachcombing more interesting.
The Nature Center doesn’t close for the
winter, either. you can bring your little kids and let them play house with the puppets. Take the big kids upstairs to the observation deck to look through the binoculars, wimps like me can observe from indoors. Climb the tower for a view of the whole harbor. It’s a great way to get out of the house or hotel room for a while on a dreary day. There are scheduled programs, including lectures and story time. you can even have your birthday – “b-earthday” – party there. Visit nccm.njaudubon.org or call 609-898-8848 for information.
Holiday shoppers will find unusual gifts at the Nature Center. your dinosaur-loving grandkid needs a T-shirt with a horseshoe crab on it. There are also hats, books, toys and little shells and stones: just the kind of tiny treasures your niece loves. Pick up a field guide for yourself and find out what you’ve been looking at all these years. Or, check out the art in the newly-renovated Harbor Gallery. The Nature Center can help you find something to love about the beach in winter. Sand in your shoes is a small price to pay.

LCMR Student Of The Week
«SENIOR Ally Cook, 17, is involved in all that LCMR has to offer. Her activities range from National Honor Society and Tri-M to
jazz band and sailing. Cook is also an enthusiastic, bright artist who is involved in the school’s art program, while creating her own pieces outside of school. She also plays trombone for the school band and was chosen to play in the Atlantic Cape Honors Band.
Parents Heather Robinson and William Cook supported her creativity from a young age, exposing her to art and music, which led her to pursue them since elementary school. They also gave her the confidence to pursue Advanced Placement and honors classes.
The proudest moment of her high school career was receiving an A in her AP Literature class this year, and says that without solid time management skills, it wouldn’t have been possible. “Time management is the key to doing anything well in school,” said Cook.
Cook has applied to The College of New Jersey, Rowan and Towson universities to pursue a double major in art and special education to follow her dream of becoming an art therapist.

«BuCKY is a two-year-old, 67-pound Pit Bull who was found wandering.
No one claimed him and this good boy is all alone! Bucky is timid when he first meets people, but he bonds eventually. He will need some training, but he’s eager to learn, and he’ll do fine with other pups! He’d rather not be around cats, and we recommend, because of his exuberance, a home without kids. The adoption fee is $95.
«sAm, a Pit Bull, first came to the shel-ter in 2010, when he was a very anxious
three-year-old. We don’t know what hap-pened to him before he arrived, but we d0 know that he had no training and was very submissive. Even though he was afraid, he was sweet and lovable. He’s housebroken, sleeps in his crate, and doesn’t jump fences. Because he’s enthusiastic, he’d do best with older children. The adoption fee is only $95.

her owner passed away. She’s a sweet little gal, who loves — really loves — attention. If you’re the kind soul who can give Sierra the home she deserves, stop by the shelter. The adoption fee is only $20, which isn’t much to pay for a new friend.
« ELECtrA, about eight months old, is a tiger who doesn’t want to leave

1828, he studied and wrote about birds in the US.
I’ll bet that’s a lot more than you wanted to know about Bonaparte’s Gull.
So here’s more. They winter here. Stay, in fact, until
early to mid-May. Then they migrate to Canada and settle down where the forest ends and the tundra begins. They travel all
Bird DroppingsThe weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
Continued On Page 98 ?
yOU’VE probably noticed that the Laughing Gulls are mostly out of here. you prob-ably haven’t noticed that Bonaparte’s Gulls have taken
their place, have you? . What’s a Bonaparte’s Gull?It’s a small, tern-like gull that breeds
in the subarctic, and winters both coastally and on the interior in open fresh water.
How’d it get the name Bonaparte?According to Ernest A. Choate, author
of The Dictionary of American Bird Names (and one-time Cape May Point resident), the Bonaparte’s Gull, Larus philadelphiensis, was named for Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte, Prince of Canino and Musignano and nephew of Napoleon. Unlike his famous uncle, whose ambition was to conquer the known world, young Charles’ ambitions were more modest. He just wanted to watch birds. After the family’s fortunes took a bad turn at a place called Waterloo, Charles came to this side of the pond where he settled first in Bordentown, New Jersey and later in Philadelphia. Between 1822 and
the way up there to find a tree to nest in.It might seem odd that a bird would
f ly all the way to the northern limits of the American forests just to find a tree to nest in. In order to get to these tree-challenged regions, they are obliged to f ly over hun-dreds of thousands of perfectly nice decidu-ous and coniferous forest.
I don’t have an explanation except that this strategy seems to work for the birds. They are common. Easily seen in Cape May in winter. If you want to catch sight of one, just head on down to the Second Avenue Jetty at the end of Beach Drive (near The Jetty Motel) or maybe the Concrete Ship (at the end of Sunset Boulevard) and look for the small, pale gull with a black spot over it’s ear and white wedges on the leading edge of it’s wings.
you’ll probably overlook the birds at first, mistaking them for terns. yep. It’s a gull that is about the size of and acts some-what like a tern.
Birders love Bonaparte’s Gulls. They
26 airCraft on display
Page 98 Thursday, December 8, 2011
love them because f locks of Bonaparte’s Gulls are the fertile grounds from which Black-headed and Little Gulls spring.
These two mostly Old-World gulls are similar to Bonaparte’s. Black-headed is larger, slightly clunkier, and redder billed. Little Gull is smaller, stockier, blunter winged and the underwings are all dark, charcoal smudged.
Black-headed winter commonly in the maritime provinces of Canada; more spar-ingly in coastal New England and rarely along the New Jersey shore. Little Gull breeds, sparingly, in North America and is nowhere common in winter, except fair numbers do occur in the Niagara Gorge in November and December and . . .
Delaware Bay is, in some years, a pretty fair place to find Little Gulls. Up to a dozen (or more) birds have been seen in coastal Delaware and New Jersey. They tend to come late (in March and April). But it is not unheard of for one or two Little Gulls to winter locally.
Little Gulls are most easily picked out in f light. The blackish underwings stand out in a f lock of birds whose primary colors are silver-gray and white. Standing amid
f locks of Bonaparte’s, the smaller Little Gulls often distinguish themselves by standing slightly apart and usually show a black skull cap to go with the dark ear patch.
Black-headed Gulls are larger, bulk-ier, just slightly smaller than Ring-billed Gulls. When standing among Bonaparte’s Gulls, their greater size is usually apparent. Also, Black-headed show two smudgy dark stripes or bands stretching across the top of its head (in addition to showing the dark ear patch).
Now the question you might be asking is why would anyone really want to tell the difference between three basically similar gulls. The answer is because that’s just what birders do. The larger question, if you in fact you asked this question, is why on earth did you read a column about gulls if you weren’t interested in them?
Next week we’ll tackle the subject of misleading advertising and other deceptive marketing practices.
Or maybe the week after. It all depends. If you’re curious about gulls, head over
to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive, overlook-ing Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day but Tuesday. Ask any of our staff, they

are always glad to help. While you’re there check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season – yes, we have walks throughout the year, even some in December and January – take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bar-gain from the used and vintage books sec-tion, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away!
Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves infor-mation, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New york Times.

The Dating Column Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
AFRAID you might be pregnant? you’ll start tripping over stroll-ers in the grocery market and seeing babies everywhere you go. Worried you’ll follow in
Great Aunt Martha’s footsteps and start los-ing your hair before the age of 40? Every other commercial you hear on the radio will be for female hair restoration. Waiting for the results of an AIDS test? That’s the day a marathon of Tom Hank’s Philadelphia will be playing on every channel. When stuff like this happens, however coincidental, we start to wonder if the universe isn’t sending signs our way, pre-paring us for the bad news about to come. It’s the same with dating. When we worry about the state of our relationships, we start seeing foreboding signs everywhere.
“What does it mean that Tim doesn’t want to spend Christmas with my family?” we ask our girlfriends. Most likely, what this means is that Tim would rather eat tree bark than our mother’s rubbery holiday ham, but we worry that Tim has checked out of the relationship. “What does it mean that Marty didn’t notice my new hairdo?” we want to
know. Most likely, Marty’s simply too excited for the upcoming Burns Supper at the Ugly Mug to notice a few highlights, but we worry that he no longer finds us attractive, that he’s sleeping with someone else, that he’s gay. Suddenly, even compliments become suspect. He says, “you look nice,” and we wonder what this really means. That we didn’t look nice yesterday, perhaps? Or maybe we did, and he just didn’t notice, which means he’s no longer attracted to us. Or he’s sleeping with someone
else. Or he’s gay. Then, of course, there are those women
on the other end of the spectrum. These ladies pick up on a different kind of imagined rela-tionship signal — the positive kind. We’ve all been there; when trying to win the affections of a man, our internal optimist sometimes rears her hopeful head. “What does it mean that Greg smiled at me during this morning’s business meeting?” we ask. Most likely, what this means is that Greg began daydreaming about Jessica Alba in a wet T-shirt during the presentation on year-end profit margins, and we happened to be sitting across from him.
Sometimes, we see what we’re looking for. But if we continue worrying that our man has changed his mind about us, eventually he will. And, conversely, if we keep putting stock in every little smile we get from that uninterested guy, we’re going to start missing opportunities with men who are interested.
At least there is some comfort in knowing that we all do it from time to time; it’s human nature. What does it mean to imagine rela-tionship signs that aren’t really there? Most likely, that you’re totally normal.

Sleeping AroundZelda Zablonski tests the beds in Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Carroll Villa.
IT WAS a dark and stormy night. Nah, it wasn’t really. It was actu-ally a brisk but beautiful Cape May December afternoon with a watercolor sky – really, one of
my favorite kinds. I was checking into The Carroll Villa, and I was excited – I’d eaten at The Mad Batter countless times, and I’ve sat at their always invit-ing bar even more times than I care to mention, but I had never stayed there. In fact, I automatically walked into the restaurant/bar entrance at check-in time — chalk it up to my unerring nose for good food and drink.
Upon stepping into the cozy lobby, my nose was immediately filled with yet another appealing smell, that of festive holiday pine. Eddie was the cheerful young man who checked me in, and gestured to the pine-scented can-dle burning behind him. A thoughtful touch, one of many I was to encounter during my stay at Carroll Villa. Eddie went over the check-in procedures, most importantly the voucher for my morning breakfast, which he advised that I hold onto tightly. (Duh, Eddie!) He then gallantly offered to carry my “luggage,” but since I only had an over-night bag and a laptop, I managed on my own.
“Charm” is a word that’s easy to overuse when writing about old hotels and bed and breakfasts, but it’s nearly impossible to avoid when writing about a place like Carroll Villa, which has charm to spare without being – well, cloying. I ascended the stairs to the second level and made my way to room 104, which is in the front of the hotel facing Jackson. I took note of the cozy velvet antique settee placed under the window out in the hall, a perfect spot to sit and watch the activity on Jackson Street below (or, for a girl to sit and dig around in her purse at the end of an evening for her room key. It could happen.) I was tickled with my room, with its soothing green floral wallpaper and gorgeous antique bed and dresser. And modern amenities? Well, they’ve implemented energy-saving and environmentally friendly changes, including solar panels, car-pets made from corn, low-energy lights, environmentally friendly paints, and energy-efficient air conditioners, to name a few. As for my room: flat-
screen TV, check, refrigerator, check, wireless internet access, check, and a surprisingly spacious bathroom with tile shower, check. Oh, and I just loved the two table lamps – sleek and mod-ern silver with beautiful blue shades, they somehow blended seamlessly with the vintage appointments in the room. (And speaking of light, I was happy to see yet another thoughtful touch in the form of a night-light in the bathroom – can’t have a girl stumbling around in the dark. It could happen.) And best of all, I could see the ocean out one of the three windows in my room, a mere half-block away.
In fact, one of the very best things about the Carroll Villa is its location, location, location. Situated on one of the most beautiful streets in town, it’s a half-block to the beach or half-block to the mall. I was grateful to have the temptation of a late-after-noon dip removed from the equation by the chilly temperature outside, and decided to head in the other direction to the mall for some Christmas shop-ping instead. you’ll note I also resisted the temptation of happy hour (3-6pm daily) in The Mad Batter’s bar…..but wait, what’s this? A warm and inviting parlor just off the lobby, complete with cheery fireplace, a selection of books, rainy-day board games and decks of cards, today’s paper on the coffee table, magazines and the current issue of EZ within reach – sure, I’ll sit for a spell.
Shopping is not for sissies, after all – best to rest up first. So thoughtful!
I returned hours later to my comfy room and crawled into bed, pondering what to have for breakfast and mak-ing a mental note to return to Carroll Villa in the summer – its proximity to Hot Dog Tommy’s, now closed for the season, is definitely not lost on me. And yes, I have a one-track mind. I awoke refreshed, took a leisurely shower and headed downstairs. I hesitated at the cozy parlor, which had coffee set up on the sideboard, but a happy couple was parked in my spot on the love seat in front of the fire, so it was off to The Mad Batter, which was bustling. The friendly and efficient Suzanne took care of me, and kept my coffee cup full, wise woman that she is, while I wavered between the tempting menu choices. After a mental game of eenie meenie miney moe, I selected the Eggs Benedict. Clearly I am a genius, because the eggs were perfectly poached, and the accompanying potatoes, flavored with some peppers and onion, were delicious. A little more coffee from the oblig-ing Suzanne and I was ready to set out into another beautiful Cape May day, fortified by the thoughtful folks at The Carroll Villa.
The Carroll Villa is located at 19 Jackson Street, 609-884-5970 or 877-275-8452, carrollvilla.com.
Don’t just go for breakfast, lunch or dinner – sleep over at The Carroll Villa.
