When the Rock-star Nationals come to town,

you know it is going to be a big event. This year was no different, with great racing action, a Freestyle motocross ex-hibition, bouncy castles for the kids, live timing and scoring, and all the pomp and grandeur moto fans have come to expect. Many thanks to the Whispering Pines/Clinton Indian Band for hosting another great event on their territory!

One of the biggest sto-ries leading up to the Nationals involved

Dominque Daffe and boy-friend Jared Petruska, who had their bikes and gear sto-len right in front of their house only a couple of weeks be-fore the start of the Nationals. The moto community saw a couple that was discour-aged but still determined, and came together to help the pair secure some bikes in time for the start of Round 1.

thirty year throwback

It is really exciting to see motocross con-tinue to thrive in BC, especially during these difficult economic times. And it is

especially exciting to witness the growth of the Ladies class, and have this class be sup-ported and developed into a National series. The racers in this class work extraordinarily hard to bring their best to the table, and the racing action is a lot of fun to watch for the spectators, and for me, is a lot of fun to pho-tograph.

Strange as it may seem today, the Ladies class did not always exist. In my days of rac-ing between 1985-1988, the demographics at the race tracks looked very different. Not only was there no Ladies’ or Young Ladies’ divisions, but there was also no PeeWee, nor 60cc (now 65cc) classes either. The young-est riders were on 80cc machines, divided into the “A” (advanced) and “B” (beginner) classes, and even those typically did not have more than 10 riders per class. We have certainly come a long way since then.

My memory might not be accurate, but I only remember two female racers, during the era that I raced. Washington state na-tive, Tara Harrison was regularly coming to Canada in the first half of 1985 in the 80A class, finishing at the top of the standings pretty consistently. I started racing in the second half of 1985, so I never got a chance to see her ride, and I was in the B class that year, so I would not have directly competed against her anyway.

But in 1986, a young Kelowna girl by the name of Jennifer Lawrence showed up at the Kelowna track on race day on a swanky, brand new KX80 to race in the 80B class. My class! Well, my track buddies informed me that now the pressure to do well just es-calated! After all they reasoned, I couldn’t let a girl beat me! I lined up at the start in Moto 1, these words still percolating in my pubes-cent brain. I was second in the first corner, but a mistake from race leader Wade Kozak put me in the lead by the end of the moto, and I took home the checkers. I felt pretty stoked, I wasn’t going to fear anybody! My overconfidence worked against me however,

as Moto 2 would not start out so well. Wade started near the front and quickly checked out. I worked my way through the pack to third, right behind Jennifer, who got a great start, perhaps even got the holeshot. She was going pretty good, winding the guts out of that little Kawi out down the straights; unfortunately, my RM80 did not have the sauce to help me pass her there. Then, in the corners, she would slow down quite a bit to navigate the bumpy, single-rut, entrance. I could not get by her on the straights, so I was left trying to get past her in the turns, but outside of the main line. I tried all sorts of creative but essentially futile variations; the inside, the outside. Then farther inside, and farther outside. But those areas of the track I was attempting to pass in were soft and not broken in, which essentially negat-ed any advantage I had in corner entrance speed.

This difficulty finding a place to complete the pass continued for virtually the whole race. I am a bit embarrassed now when I look back, but my buddies’ words stuck in my head - “you must not let a girl beat you!” There is a major problem with this line of thinking - once the gender became a focal point, you stop thinking about moving to the front of the pack. You became fixated on making one single pass, and you stop thinking about passing anyone else for the remainder of the moto. And in my case that day, this wasn’t a pass for the lead, but for second. I was prepared to be content if only this pass would happen. And that content-ment represents a serious thinking problem as a racer. The second problem with this thinking is the, ahem, possibly chauvinistic part, blah blah blah.

Finally, realizing that the race was winding down, with half a lap remaining, I got des-perate, and saw an opportunity to “maybe” get past Jennifer in a turn, in a remote part of the track. I ended up coming from outside the racing line into the racing line, stuffing my Suzuki with much force, into the line of a left-hand corner, immediately in front of her front tire. As I did so, I felt...A Bump.

Now, I am pretty sure that I did not take out her front wheel. I told myself this now, without hyperbole, millions of times. But have you ever had that feeling where you suspect that something bad has just hap-pened, but you don’t want to find out what it was? I had that feeling at that moment. I knew I was past her, and I knew she was not going to pass me back. Then my brain start-ed spouting some involuntary rationaliza-tions; “Eyes in front. Hey this is racing, not a Sunday trail ride. Bumps happen all the time on a motocross track. It must have been a re-ally, really deep rut. Much deeper than what I figured.” I suddenly felt terrible about being in second, and being in front of “that girl.” My pass was kinda sketchy at best. I crossed the finish line and came off of the track, and perceived a few people giving me a stink-eye, a look which only confirmed a sense of guilt that had brewed up in me. On top of that, I also got razzed a bit by my buddies for not moving toward the front earlier in the race and “letting” this girl stay ahead of me for so long! My second moto second place finish meant Wade would take the win for the day. I don’t recall how Jennifer ended up placing over-all, but quite possibly I owe her an apology from that race 29 years ago.

Fast...for a girl

How fast are the ladies nowadays? fifteen year old Ken-nedy Lutz competed in the first moto of the Junior MX-3 class earlier in the day, prior to her national motos later in the afternoon. The results in both classes were exact-ly the same: Domination.

Name: Zoey Shamley

Age: 18Day job/school: I'm a receptionist right now. But I recently just finished my first level of training to be a paramedic.

Hometown: Lytton BC

Sponsors: Leading Edge Motorsports, atlas brace, matrix concepts, 100%

Bike(s): 2014 KX100, which I just got at the start of the season. At first I was on a 2007CRF150R

Class(es): Ladies. But I think I'm also going to race in a guys class sometime soon

Racing accomplishments: In 2014 I raced Arenacrossfor the first time and got 3rd the first night, and myfirst win the following night. And learning how to ride a 2 stroke and use a clutch has been a big accomplishment as well, I probably had only a couple days of riding it before my first race where I placed 7th in Kamloops.

Favorite track: Whispering Pines

Favorite quote: The only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday. Each day we are growing as a person, and as a rider! So you just have to keep a positive attitude!

Best racing story: In 2014, when I used to race off-road, there was a race in Lytton. I crashed on a rocky hillclimb and bent my gear shifter so bad, my boot couldn't fit under it. So for the whole lap, I had to use my hand to gear up until I got back to the pits

Favorite rider: Hands down Ashley Fiolek. She's such an inspiration.

Technical difficulties delayed the start of moto 2 by 30 mins, but despite the heat, the girls still found lots to smile about, while waiting for the race to get underway.
