2007 Engineer of the YearKen K. Hayashida, P.E.

Ken K. Hayashidahas been selected by theHawaii Society ofProfessional Engineersas the recipient of the2007 Engineer of theYear. Mr. Hayashida wasnominated by the HawaiiSection of the AmericanSociety of Civil Engineersfor his significant contri-butions to the engineering community in Hawaii.

Mr. Hayashida is a proud graduate of IolaniSchool and received his Bachelors of Science inCivil Engineering from the University of Hawaii atManoa and his Masters from Stanford University.

Mr. Hayashida founded the structural engi-neering firm of KAI Hawaii, Inc. in 1995 and cur-rently serves as the President and PrincipalEngineer of the firm. His technical achievementsand awards are numerous and include HawaiiHall at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, wherehe received the Engineering Excellence Award bythe American Council of Engineering Companiesof Hawaii, Historical Renovation Project of theYear by the American Builders and Contractors,among many others. Other outstanding achieve-ments include the Maui Bridge Inspection (PhaseII), Emergency Replacement of Paauau StreamBridge, Pier 1C Extension at Kahului Harbor,Aston Kaanapali Shores Resort Lobby, and theKailua Shopping Center Renovation on Oahu.

In addition to his noteworthy projects, Mr.Hayashida is also a member of a long list of pro-fessional affiliations including the University ofHawaii College of Engineering Industry AdvisoryCommittee, Structural Engineers Association ofHawaii, American Society of Civil Engineers,American Concrete Institute, American Instituteof Steel Construction, American Water WorksAssociation, Hawaii Developers Council, andNAIOP Hawaii.

At the community level, Mr. Hayashida gener-ously volunteers his time and talents to organiza-tions such as the YMCA, UH College ofEngineering, Lanakila, various youth sportsteams, and the Kaneohe Nazarene Church.

Under Mr. Hayashida’s leadership, KAI Hawaiihas grown to 23 employees on only ten years.He is a strong believer in teamwork and providesteam building training for his employees everyyear. He strongly encourages all engineers toparticipate in professional organizations and hehas certainly set a fine example for all of us in theengineering community. Congratulations to Mr.Ken Hayashida, Hawaii Society of ProfessionalEngineer’s 2007 Engineer of the Year.

2007 Young Engineer of the YearCathy Leong, P.E.

The Hawaii Society ofProfessional Engineers isproud to recognizeCathy Leong, P.E. asthe recipient of the 2007Young Engineer of theYear Award. Ms. Leongwas nominated by Mr.Pete Pascua, P.E., Vice-President at WilsonOkamoto Corporation forher outstanding contributions to her professionand to the community. Ms. Leong received herBachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from theUniversity of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) and aMaster of Science in Civil Engineering from theUniversity of California at Berkeley. Her distin-guished academic career includes being a mem-ber of the Chi Epsilon (Civil Engineering HonorSociety) and receiving scholastic awards such asthe R.M. Towill scholarship, OutstandingGraduating Senior Award, and the University ofCalifornia Transportation Center fellowship.

Ms. Leong is also very active in her profes-sional society, the Institute of TransportationEngineers (ITE), serving in various leadershippositions for many years and receiving numerousawards for her commitment and service to thesociety.

Ms. Leong is a Project Manager and SeniorTraffic Engineer at Wilson Okamoto Corporationsupervising a team of engineers and a multimil-lion dollar budget. She manages projectsencompassing a broad range of topics includingsite specific traffic signal designs, project specif-ic traffic assessments and impact studies, andplanning level transportation studies and model-ing.

Ms. Leong has been involved in numerousnoteworthy projects such as ADA TransitionPlans for the City and County of Honolulu,County of Maui, County of Hawaii, and State ofHawaii, Oahu Pedestrian Safety Study Update,Waikiki Livable Community Project, and the Aiea-Pearl City Livable Communities Plan.

According to Mr. Pete Pascua, Cathy hascommitted herself and her work to improving thelives of others through her work on issuesregarding traffic and transportation, which areprominent concerns which the people of Hawaiiface daily. Her recent work regarding the mobili-ty of persons with disabilities has led to an envi-ronment that promotes accessible design; a con-cept that was merely a consideration justdecades ago. Her desire to succeed and perse-verance toward problem solving has elevated herinterest and commitment within the profession,and is a sterling model for other young aspiring

2007 HSPE StudentEngineering of the YearChristy M. Kaneshiro

Ms. Christy M.Kaneshiro has beenselected as the 2007HSPE Student Engineerof the Year. Christy hasmaintained an excep-tionally high level of aca-demic excellence. Infact, she earned thehighest GPA in her majorwhen she graduated inDecember 2006 as the Outstanding GraduatingSenior, and had been on the College ofEngineering Dean’s list every semester since shematriculated to the Electrical EngineeringProgram after graduating as Valedictorian fromPearl City High School in 2002. She has alsobeen listed on the National Dean’s List.Accordingly, she has received numerous scholar-ships from the University, College, and industry,including the HSPE Scholarship in 2002. She isalso the recipient of the prestigious United StatesAchievement Academy National CollegiateEngineering Award in 2002.

Aside from excelling in course work, Christyhas dedicated much of her time to student orga-nization, community service, engineering out-reach, and taken on various leadership roles.She was the Chairperson for the Institute ofElectrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)Student Branch in 2006 and a member since2005; the Treasurer for Eta Kappa Nu (HKN)Delta Omega Chapter in 2005/2006 and a mem-ber since 2005; the Chairperson for Society ofWomen Engineers’ Introduce a Girl toEngineering in 2005 and a member since 2004;and the Assistant Chairperson for the College ofEngineering Fall Career Day in 2004.

Christy’s work experience is just as diverse.She has interned at The AES Design Group, Inc.in 2002; Cedric D.O. Chong & Associates, Inc. in2004 and 2005; and currently at LockheedMartin Corporation. She was also a consultantand grader for the Department of ElectricalEngineering. Her research and project work hasranged from Non-Contact Wireless HeartMonitoring Systems to Modeling PhotovoltaicDevices to Defense Radar Systems.

Hawaii Space Grant ConsortiumThe Hawai‘i Space Grant Consortium compris-

es programs at the University of Hawai‘i atManoa and Hilo, the seven Community Collegeswithin the University of Hawai‘i system, theUniversity of Guam, and several non-academicpartners. The mission of the consortium is toinspire, nurture, and train the space scientists,space settlers, and aerospace engineers of thefuture by:• Enhancing undergraduate education by

encouraging undergraduate research in spacescience, planetary resource exploration,remote sensing, and aerospace engineering,and developing innovative courses in theseareas

• Improving the research infrastructure of theirmember institutions

• Training pre-service and in-service teachers• Educating the public about exciting new dis-

coveries stemming from space exploration• Helping to strengthen local space-related

industriesFuture Flight Hawaii (http://www.higp.hawaii.

edu/futureflight/) is one of the programs man-aged and sponsored by the Hawaii Space GrantConsortium, University of Hawaii at Manoa underthe direction of program coordinator Art Kimuraand education specialist Rene Kimura who havebeen involved with, supportive of and affiliatedwith NASA education for the past 20 years. TheFuture Flight Hawaii program was initiated in1991 under the Department of Business,Economic Development & Tourism’s Office ofSpace Industry as a program to help catalyzestudent interest in science, technology and thefuture. Their initiatives have included:

• Summer enrichment, residential and non resi-dential science and technology camps, whichhave hosted over 7,000 participants on the BigIsland, Kauai, Oahu and Maui

• Family science nights that reach 4,000 chil-dren, parents and teachers annually

• Support to the NASA Explorer Schools(http://explorerschools.nasa.gov/portal/site/nes/) in Hawaii (Pearl City Elementary School isHawaii’s newest NASA Explorer School)

• Coordination of the Astronaut Ellison OnizukaScience Day and the Astronaut Lacy VeachDay of Discovery (http://www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu/)

• Coordination of the Hawaii Botball roboticsregional tournament (www.botball.org), cur-rently with 30 teams registered for the 2007tournament on April 28, 2007 (in addition,Hawaii will be hosting the national Botball tour-nament as part of the 2007 NationalConference on Educational Robotics, July 9-13, 2007)

• Support to schools and teachers in scienceand technology educationThe primary goals of the program are to

increase scientific literacy among the youth andcommunity at large, and increase the pipelineinto technical, scientific and engineering careerpaths by capitalizing on the interest in the spaceprogram. Former participants have gone on tocareers in engineering and other technical or sci-entific disciplines. Through its endeavors, theprogram has developed a network of supportiveeducators and community partners who offer thecommunity with increasing opportunities to inter-est the youth of Hawaii in careers in engineering

and science. A significant milestone will beachieved in 2007 with the much anticipated flightof teacher and astronaut, Barbara Morgan, onSTS 118, space shuttle, Endeavour, on her 11day mission to the International Space Station.Future Flight Hawaii hopes to have BarbaraMorgan at a future community and educationprogram in Hawaii after her flight so she can con-tinue to “inspire the next generation of explorers.”

For the third year, Future Flight Hawaii will bepartnering with the Hawaii Council of EngineeringSocieties (HCES) to offer a special demonstrationprogram at Kahala Mall on February 24, 2007 forEngineers Week 2007. The demonstration pro-gram entitled “Inspiring the Next Generation ofEngineers” will be presented by the award win-ning McKinley High School robotics club andFuture Flight Hawaii’s Weird Science team.Between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM,Dale Olive, Waiakea High School Physics andChemistry teacher, who directs the pre-engineer-ing academy at the school, and Roger Kwok,physics Instructor, Leeward Community College,will be providing engaging, humorous and excit-ing 20 minute science demonstrations on theKahala Mall stage every hour on the hour. Thiswell recognized team has collectively made pre-sentations to over 50,000 children and adults inHawaii with a goal of catalyzing interest in sci-ence, technology and the future. From demon-strating and explaining Bernoulli’s principle asrelated to aeronautics to Newton’s Laws as relat-ed to rocketry, a variety of science and engineer-ing related concepts will be demonstrated in afast paced, “science is always fun” presentation.

Mr. Alan Lloyd was born in Honolulu in 1929.He attended Punahou School. He graduatedfrom Swarthmore College in 1951 with aBachelor of Science degree in MechanicalEngineering; elected to Tau Beta Pi. He soldWestinghouse power equipment to utilities andsugar plantations in Hawaii for 13 years beforejoining the Maui Electric Company. He trans-ferred to the Hawaiian Electric Company in 1969.He retired in 1996 as Executive Staff Engineer.He is also a Licensed Professional Engineer. Mr.

Lloyd has the following affiliations: Fellow of theAmerican Society of Heating, Refrigeration & AirConditioning Engineers; Life member of theAmerican Society of Mechanical Engineers;National Director Emeritus of the Navy League;Historian, USS Missouri Memorial Association;Member, Rotary Club of Windward Oahu andMember, S.A.M.E.

Mr. Lloyd presented a very informative andinteresting briefing on the events leading up toand the events which took place during the Battleof Midway. He highlighted the unsung heroes ofthe battle and illustrated the importance andsuccesses the US Military’s leadership involved inthe battle. MOANALUA FREEWAY RESURFACINGHALAWA INTERCHANGE TO KAHAUIKIINTERCHANGE

Due to the relatively tight radius of the ramp, special lengthsof Bidwell tracks were used. Normally, the track sectionsconsist of 20 foot lengths inserted end-to-end. For thisproject, 10 foot lengths were utilized along the inside trackand in an alternating sequence with the 20 foot lengths onthe outside track to allow for enough “kinking” of the trackto create the appropriate radii.

Theodore W. Bell, P.E., associate vice presi-

dent and director for Moffat & Nichol’s water-borne transit practice will be speaking onHawaii’s Superferry project. Ted Bell has morethan 25 years experience in transportationdesign, specializing in the design and planning offerry terminals. Prior to joining Moffatt & Nichol,he served as Manager of Terminal Engineering forWashington State Ferries. His degrees, a bache-lor of science in civil engineering and a bachelorof arts in economics, make him especially suitedto the economic and financial analyses requiredto evaluate ferry operations. Ted’s areas of exper-tise include project management, ferry opera-tions, risk assessment, civil and structural engi-neering, construction management, agencycoordination, right of way acquisition, and legalissues. He has participated in award-winningprojects, including the Edmonds Ferry TerminalOverhead Passenger Landing and TerminalBuilding (2000 National Transportation MeritAward) and the South 277th StreetReconstruction (2003 American Public WorksAssociation Project Of The Year). Ted is currentlyproviding ferry expertise to the Hawaii Superferryproject, which is anticipated to be operational bymid 2007.

CFSEI Review of 2006The Hawaii Chapter CFSEI conducted 4 dinner

meetings in 2006 including the InstallationBanquet, a visit by Al Toback of Loctite, a pre-sentation by Mark Crawford of Simpson Strong-Tie on the effect of treated lumber on coldformed steel, and Dr. Robertson’s top trackresearch report and an update on HurricaneKatrina damage. This year we were able to part-ner with SEAOH and ASCE to conduct joint din-ner meetings. Based on the attendance, theywere a great success. We also participated inseveral Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance(HPSFA) dinner and lunch meetings during theyear.

President Tim Waite and Vice President BrianEnomoto represented the Hawaii Chapter at theCFSEI meetings at Metalcon in Tampa, Florida inOctober.

On the heels of last year’s decision to strength-en the LGSEA by placing it under the wings ofthe Steel Framing Alliance, the Hawaii Chapterwas able to retain almost all of the professionalmembers in the Chapter.

Tim Waite, also a member of the NationalCFSEI, participated in a strategic planning retreatlast August to help chart the course of CFSEI forthe next 5 years. Significant outcomes of thatretreat:• Permanently changing the name of LGSEA to

CFSEI.• Developing a strategic plan to better focus the

activities of the CFSEI for the next 5 years withan emphasis on accelerating the developmentof technical notes and assisting the local chap-ters.

• A decision to conduct the 2007 NationalAnnual CFSEI meeting in Hawaii in conjunctionwith PACRIM.

• Endorsing a new membership dues programthat will reduce annual dues with reducedrates for multiple members in the same com-pany.

AIA and SEAOH objected to thisbecause the commission would not have themake up of people technically qualified. It wasrecommended to make the Statewide BuildingCode a separate bill. Also, it was recommendedto look at existing buildings and retrofitting, espe-cially existing essential facilities. Written testimo-ny was sent in on Tuesday, 1/9/07, by G. Chock.

Kiholo Bay Earthquake on October 15, 2006:A report, including some of the compiled obser-vations made during the ATC-20 inspections hasbeen published by EERI. The report has beenposted on the SEAOH website for viewing. Ajoint report by EERI, UH, and SEAOH is beingcompiled and will be published shortly. A reporton ATC-20 inspections was issued that had 11recommendations on the inspection process,which was sent to Hawaii County Civil Defenseand State Civil Defense. Kylie Yamatsuka will bethe Disaster Response Chair joined by RonIawamoto and Tim Waite. In 2007, DisasterResponse Committee tasks would be updatingand rectifying the volunteer list, establishing astandardized SEAOH evaluation data reportform, working with the County of Hawaii andState Civil Defense on logistical protocols andidentification badging from State Civil Defense.

Big Island to adopt 2006 IBC: Big Islandsent G. Chock a copy of their proposed amend-ments. Review of the amendments would be thefirst task for the 2007 Code Committee (GlennMiyasato, Dean Doi, Gary Chock, Afaq Sarwar,and Scott Listavich). Review would identifywhether any Honolulu structural amendmentsshould also apply to the County of Hawaii. Thecommittee will also provide advise on any devel-opments towards a possible State BuildingCode.

The legislature will be in session soon. Weneed your help! Please submit testimony, or bet-ter yet, show up at hearings to support ACECHsponsored bills. This year we will again try topass legislation to eliminate defend requirementsin State Contract Language. We will also seekto reinstate the Certificate of Merit for DesignProfessionals, and funding for the HawaiiProcurement Institute.

We still need study tours on Maui for theNational ACECH Convention which will be heldon Maui in September of 2007. If you have aninnovative or interesting project that may be ofinterest please, and can serve as a tour for ourvisiting ACEC members from the mainland, con-tact ACECH (Ginny Wright).

Dr. Crouch served as Vice Provost for GlobalEngagement for Arizona State University and ledASU’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering asdean. During his tenure there, Crouch success-fully elevated the school to become one of thetop 50 engineering programs in the nation. Healso increased total graduate and undergraduateenrollment, added 160 new faculty, establishedstrong industry partnerships with some of thenation’s largest high-tech companies, and devel-oped educational programs in China, Korea,India, and Mexico. Dr. Crouch was chair of theuniversity’s electrical engineering department andhas authored 120 archival and refereed publica-tions and two books. • Engineers Week: ASME will have an exhibit atKahala Mall. Our Registration responsibilitieswill include name badges, manning the regis-tration table, giving leis to dignitaries, andescorting dignitaries to their tables.

2007 MATHCOUNTS COMPETITIONSThe Oahu Chapter Competition is scheduled

for Saturday, February 10, and the StateCompetition on Saturday, March 10, 2007. Bothcompetitions will be held at the KamehamehaSchools Kalama Dining Hall. As you may knowthe MATHCOUNTS Competition is a nationwidemath competition for 6th, 7th and 8th gradersheld annually in every state in February andMarch. The national competition is held in Mayusually in Washington D.C.

The Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers(HSPE) sponsors the competitions annually withco-sponsors Aloha Airlines and HawaiianElectric. Engineers from ASCE, ASME, Corp ofEngineers, HECO, SAME, and SSFM proctor andscore the competitions annually. We have longconsidered the MATHCOUNTS Oahu ChapterCompetition an annual Engineers Week activity.

ASME LEADERSHIP TRAININGCONFERENCE

The Hawaii Section is looking for a member toattend the March 2, 3 and 4th LeadershipTraining Conference (LTC) in Houston. The themeof the 2007 LTC is “Connecting Communities,”and its purpose is to provide ASME memberswith an opportunity to develop their leadershipknowledge and skills, share best practices, formpartnerships with other sections, and focus oncritical issues important to the success of theSociety. This is a great opportunity for an ASMEmember to get actively involved with ASME andhelp promote mechanical engineering.

The conference will be held at the WyndhamGreenspoint Hotel near the Bush IntercontinentalAirport. Travel reimbursement covers airfare andhotel.
