NATURE: BORN IN THE ROCKIESWED 10TH & 17TH, 8 PM

VOL 30, ISSUE 11 / NOVEMBER 2021

COMPELLING STORIES THAT awaken

your curiosity. Breathtaking vistas that

help you exhale more deeply. Extraor-

dinary animals that dazzle

with their intelligence,

ferocity, and beauty—

and attract legions of

superfans with their

super cuteness.

Welcome to the

wonderful world of Nature!

The Emmy and Peabody

Award-winning series that inspires people

to discover the wonder and beauty of

our natural world continues its 40th

season with The Elephant and the Termite

(Wed 3rd, 8 p.m.). In arid regions across

Africa, the waterhole is where animals

visit to drink, some creatures are born

and die, and predators wait in ambush.

Filmmakers Mark Deeble and Vicky Stone

(Nature: The Queen of Trees) spent two

years at a waterhole in Kenya to record

life there. Witness the dramas of Africa’s

great wildlife meeting place and the

creatures that call it home—from mighty

elephants to tiny termites.

Next, journey deep into the wild heart

of the Rocky Mountains and experience

this rugged land through the eyes of its

wildlife in the two-part special Born in

the Rockies (Wed 10th and 17th, 8 p.m.).

Follow courageous animal families—a

herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep

and their newborn lambs, a mother grizzly

bear and her cubs, and a flock of sand-

hill cranes and their offspring—as they

struggle to survive through the seasons

in one of the most challenging and spec-

tacular habitats on Earth and face off

against predators, the elements, and

sometimes even each other.

Enjoy an encore of My

Life as a Turkey (Wed

24th, 8 p.m.)—just in

time for Thanksgiv-

ing!—and look for more

Season 40 premieres in

the coming months, includ-

ing Penguins: Meet the Family,

American Horses, and a second install-

ment of Animals with Cameras.

We’re also pleased to debut Going

Wild with Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, a new

Nature podcast available free on Apple

Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast

listening apps. Join the acclaimed wild-

life ecologist as she journeys to remote

jungles, savannas, tundras, mountains,

and deserts to study wild animals in their

natural habitats and protect their futures—

from lemurs in Madagascar to bears in

the Sierras.

Nature episodes will also stream at

pbs.org/nature and the THIRTEEN app

(thirteen.org/anywhere).

R E M E M B E R I N GWorthington Mayo-SmithA longtime patron of The WNET Group, Legacy Society member and music lover, Worthington (“Bill”) Mayo-Smith passed peacefully at age 95 last summer. Bill loved the inspiring arts programming on PBS, especially Great Performances’ New Year’s celebration from Vienna and A Capitol Fourth. He enjoyed music that was bright, jubilant — and rousing. His love of brass instruments extended to his own family, and he never missed a performance by his grandson, an accomplished trombone player. Bill’s dedication to WNET and its performing arts programming will have a lasting impact because of his thoughtful gift planning.

Bill felt it was important to help rising generations and provide access to enriching programming and the finest musical performances. His late wife, Margaret Collette Mayo-Smith, shared his passion for education and the arts — so Bill made it a priority to provide for their public broadcasting station.

On behalf of the board and staff of The WNET Group, and millions of viewers, thank you, Bill Mayo-Smith, for your exceptional generosity and vision.

Secrets of the Dead: Hindenburg’s Fatal Flaws

Wed 10th, 10 p.m. • pbs.org/secrets

IN 1937, THE HINDENBURG airship exploded into

flames upon landing and 36 people were killed in

the horrifying crash, shocking the world and sealing

the fate of airship travel forever. For decades, the

exact cause of the Hindenburg’s crash has remained

a mystery. Recently discovered letters, maintenance

reports, and company memos reveal the unfortu-

nate errors that led to the disaster. Experts now

suspect that, had critical construction flaws been

fixed, the airship might not have crashed.GUS PASQUERELLA / U.S. NAVY

The Children of Carlisle

Tue 23rd, 9 p.m.

IN 2017, A DELEGATION of Northern Arapaho tribal members

traveled from Wyoming to Pennsylvania to retrieve remains of

three children who died in the 1880s at Carlisle Indian Industrial

School—the federal boarding school that removed Native

American children from their tribal homelands, and through

brutal assimilation tactics, stripped them of their languages,

traditions, and culture. This film, airing in honor of Native

American Heritage Month, chronicles the modern-day journey

of tribal members on a quest to heal generational wounds.CALDERA PRODUCTIONS
