RHINO REPORT March 28th, 2018 Justice Page Middle School Minneapolis, MN Volume 3 No. 10 SPRING BREAK! BY: Norah Popehn and Olive Strike Happy Spring Break everyone! Before you go on vacation, we thought to give you some pointers and/or maybe some things you should do if you have no plans. First, if it is nice out, GO OUTSIDE!!! Get a taste of spring and enjoy the outdoors. Second, if you have a bike, tune it up and ride it. Most everyone loves a good bike ride. Third, get your homework done so you don’t have it hanging over your head all break. Fourth, spend some time with your family, I’m not saying you have to be with them 24/7 but spend some decent time with them. Fifth, take some relaxing time in your break to watch a movie or maybe 2. Or watch some NETFLIX or Hulu, whatever you like. Sixth, hang out with friends, maybe set up a time to hang out with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while. Seventh, ENJOY IT! We have a lot of breaks and we shouldn’t take them for granted, especially since people who don’t work in the school district don’t get breaks. They go EVERYDAY unless they use a sick day or vacation day. So, enjoy your break! Southwest Incident BY: Anna Manson Students in schools all over the country walked out of class on the morning of March 14th as a way to protest gun violence and to promote school safety. The students at Southwest High School were doing the same, but during the walk, something that the principal described as a “small fight” occurred. It reportedly began as the students were walking, and they allegedly saw a student waving a flag that had the word “Trump” on it, and was shouting racial slurs. Then, a small group of students started a fight that was “quickly broken up”, said their principal. Now, rumors are going around at the school about gun violence and many students skipped school the day after. Although the police confirmed there was no threat, extra security measures have been taken. Last Male Northern White Rhino Has Died BY: Olive Strike Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, died at the age of 45. He was unable to stand and was suffering from many infections in his “advanced age”. Now only two of these rhinos are left, Sudan’s daughter, Najin, and his granddaughter, Fatu. Since there are no males left, after these two die, these beautiful creatures could officially be considered extinct. We don’t want that to happen but unfortunately it must. End of the Quarter! BY: Norah Popehn The end of 3rd quarter is on Thursday, March 29th. Teachers will do Record Keeping Day so they can get all your grades in. Make sure to turn in any late work you have so you can get a good grade. Some teachers are saying that you have to turn missing work by Wednesday, March 28 instead so they can get your grades in by Thursday because they may be going on vacation or they need to be home for their kids. So, turn in your work soon! Also, you can’t make up this missing work so work hard to get an A. Check Student Portal to check on your grades and to see what you have missing. If you don’t have anything missing then do whatever you want and relax.

First,ifitisniceout,GOOUTSIDE!!!Getatasteofspringandenjoytheoutdoors.Second,ifyouhaveabike,tuneitupandrideit.Mosteveryonelovesagoodbikeride.Third,getyourhomeworkdonesoyoudon’thaveithangingoveryourheadallbreak.Fourth,spendsometimewithyourfamily,I’mnotsayingyouhavetobewiththem24/7butspendsomedecenttimewiththem.Fifth,takesomerelaxingtimeinyourbreaktowatchamovieormaybe2.OrwatchsomeNETFLIXorHulu,whateveryoulike.Sixth,hangoutwithfriends,maybesetupatimetohangoutwithafriendthatyouhaven’tseeninawhile.Seventh,ENJOYIT!Wehavealotofbreaksandweshouldn’ttakethemforgranted,especiallysincepeoplewhodon’tworkintheschooldistrictdon’tgetbreaks.TheygoEVERYDAYunlesstheyuseasickdayorvacationday. Bigcatsfacehabitatloss,illegalhuntingforskinsandotherbodyparts,andthen[are]killedwhentheypreyonlivestock.Tobringattentiontothediverseandbeautifulfelidspeciesaroundtheworldthatareindangerofbecomingextinct,firstupisthewell-knownsnowleopard.ThisiconiccatlivesintheunbelievablycoldhabitatsofalpineandsubalpineareasofCentralAsiaandisrarelyeverseeninthewildbasedinpartbecauseofitselusivenatureandinpartbecausetherearesofewleftintheworld.Theestimatedpopulationofthisendangeredspeciesissomewherebetween4,000and6,5000individuals. Nextup,thefishingcatisaspeciesthatprovesnotallcatshatewater,butinfactsomelovethewater.ThesecatslivealongriversandinmangroveswampsinAsia,primarilyinIndia,Nepal,BangladeshandSriLanka.Theyareskilledswimmers,andaredependentonwetlandsfortheirfood.However,humanexploitationoffishstocksaswellasdevelopmentoftheirhabitathashadnegativeeffectsonthespeciesandtheyarelistedasendangered. Next,theIberianLynxiscriticallyendangered,andistheworld'smostthreatenedspeciesofcatwithonlyabout309livinginthewildasof2013.Thatisactuallyupfromtheroughly100individualsestimatedtobealivein2005.NativetotheIberianPeninsula,theIberianlynxisanexpertrabbithunter--unfortunatelyithasspecializedononlyrabbitsandthelossofpreyduetodiseaseoutbreaksaswellashabitathasallbutwipeditout.Thoughitisnowillegaltohuntthemandtheirhabitatisprotected,thelynxstillfallsvictimtocarsalongroads,feraldogsandpoachingbyhumans.

Thelastendangeredcat,thecheetah,hasbeenlistedasvulnerabletoextinction,andhasdisappearedentirelyfrommanyofitsformerranges.OncefoundthroughoutAfricaandtheMiddleEast,thecheetahisnowprimarilyrelegatedtoonesmallpatchinIranandfragmentedareasofAfrica.Forthousandsofyears,cheetahsweretamedashuntinganimalsandpets,andsomekingsoremperorswouldkeepathousandcheetahsatatime.Butbecausecheetahsneedlargestretchesofopenlandtobeabletohunt,theimpactofhumanencroachment,aswellashuntingbyhumansfortheirfurs,hastakenitstoll.Onlyaround12,400cheetahsremaininthewildintwenty-fiveAfricancountries,andcheetahsmaybewellontheirwaytotheendangeredspecieslist.
