1. Higher Education in India/Jandhyala B.G.Tilak

India has a large network of around 634 universities and 33,000 colleges with 817,000 teachers spread across the length and breadth of the country. Despite its massive geographical reach, higher education in India has had its share of problems. This volume is a collection of essays which discusses these problems like inclusiveness and the impact of reservation on education, the problems of mediocrity, shortage of funds, dwindling numbers of faculty and the unemployment of the educated youth, to name a few. Tracing the history of higher education in India from the days of Nalanda and Takshashila, Jandhyala B. G. Tilak in his introduction explains why it is necessary to have a vision and a roadmap for this.

2. Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists/Raghu Ram G Rajan and Luigi Zingale

"Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists" is a groundbreaking book that will

radically change our understanding of the capitalist system, particularly the role

of financial markets. They are the catalyst for inspiring human ingenuity and

spreading prosperity. The perception of many, especially in the wake of never-

ending corporate scandals, is that financial markets are parasitic institutions that

feed off the blood, sweat, and tears of the rest of us. The reality is far different.

This book breaks free of traditional ideological arguments of the Right and Left

and points to a new way of understanding and spreading the extraordinary

wealth-generating capabilities of capitalism.

3. Self-Deception:India’s China Policies origins,premises,lessons/Arun Shourie

On what assumptions was Pandit Nehru confident that China would not invade

India in 1962? Why and on what basis did he scotch all warnings in Tibet and our

entire border? What did he do when those assumptions proved wrong? What

eventually led to the debacle of 1962? Are the same delusions and mistakes not

being repeated now? Why will the consequences be any different? This is a

devastating analysis and warning on India's policy and approach regarding China,

based on Nehru's notes to his officers, his correspondence, including letters to

chief ministers and his speeches in and out of Parliament.

4. Four Miles to Freedom: Escape from a Pakistani POW Camp/Faith Johnston

When Flight Lieutenant Dilip Parulkar was shot down over Pakistan on 10

December 1971, he quickly turned that catastrophe into the greatest adventure

of his life. On 13 August 1972, Parulkar, along with Malvinder Singh Grewal and

Harish Sinhji, escaped from a POW camp in Rawalpindi. Four Miles to Freedom is

their story. Based on interviews with eight Indian fighter pilots who helped

prepare the escape and the two who escaped, as well as research into other

sources, Four Miles is also the moving, sometimes amusing, account of how

twelve fighter pilots from different ranks and backgrounds coped with

deprivation, forced intimacy and the pervasive uncertainty of a year in captivity

and how they came together to support Parulkar's courageous escape plan.

5. India’s Foreign Policy: a Reader/Kanti P Bajpai and Harsh V Pant

In this timely volume, two leading experts on India's foreign policy bring

together essays written over the last 15 years by prominent scholars that

challenge some of the commonly held perceptions about India's foreign

policy. It explores and challenges several myths about Indian foreign policy-

that it lacks strategic culture; there are no clearly discernible sets of

principles; and it is largely idealistic in its orientation. The volume gives

incisive insights into the key features of India's foreign policy. It also traces

the changes that it has undergone over the years, and highlights

contemporary policy challenges. In four sections, this volume analyses:

India's thinking about its strategic culture and its conception of how to deal

with the world; India's power and its foreign policy infrastructure; India's

external relationships with major countries; and, finally, India's global

diplomacy on issues of climate change and its approach to the WTO.

7. The Adventures of Robin Hood/Roger Lancelyn Green

The Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green is a brilliant the

Robin Hood tales. All of the stories are here. Robin's fight with Little John is

related, as is the archery contest, Robin's love affair with Marion, and the

wedding of Allan-a-Dale. All of the characters like Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet,

Little John, Maid Marion, and (guess what!) Robin Hood make their

appearances. Overall, the tales are well told, and the book is very complete.

My favorite portion of this edition is the prologue in which the author

writes from where the stories are derived. There, I was turned to Thomas

Love Peacock's brilliant, if forgotten; tales of Robin Hood entitled Maid

Marian. This edition will help to keep the adventures of Robin Hood in the

minds of children for another generation.

Since 1991, P. Chidambaram has been deeply involved with the economic reforms

that have changed India for the better. He firmly believes that economic freedom

is linked not just to higher growth, more jobs and larger incomes, but has

undeniable connections to political freedom, empowerment, transparency and

good governance. This book is as much a tribute to Chidambaram's eloquent

advocacy of economic freedom and the courage he displayed in implementing itas

about setting the agenda for the country's next wave of reforms. The authors of

the essays in this volume are accomplished experts in their respective spheres.

11. Marx’s Capital/Ben Fine & Alfredo Saad-Filho

This brilliantly concise book is a classic introduction to Marx's key work, Capital. In

languages, the new edition has been fully revised and updated, making it an ideal

modern introduction to one of the most important texts in political economy. The

authors cover all central aspects of Marx's economics. They explain the structure

of Marx's analysis and the meaning of the key categories in Capital, showing the

internal coherence of Marx's approach. Marx's method and terminology are

explored in detail, with supporting examples. Short chapters enable the meaning
