Dr,Kenneth Hartigan-Gojs the firstAMDA member

toparticφate in the AMDA academic exchange

pro9ramme and study lndustrialMedicjne in the

Department　of　Public　Health　in　okayama

university Medical School，under the guidance of

Prof. Dr, Masana ogata. He obtained the post-graduate　fe110wship　soon　after

finishing　medical degree from university of Philippines. During one month

period of training he studied， mainly，the comprehensive　method of air and

water polution control and monitoring system. He studied the management by

advanced technology in the Prefectural Research lnstitute for Environment and

Public Health. His study included field visits and on the spot learning in and

around　okayama　City.　After　successfullyむompleting　the　fellowship　and

broadening his experiences in occupational and lndustrial Medicine, Dr.Kenneth

Was awarded an authorized certificate by okayama university　Medical Schoo】.

Returned to Philippines he was appointed as a resident physician in university

Hospital.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　一

　　Dr. Kenneth, for his hard work and outstanding performance, was choosen as

the　best　resident　of　the　department　of　lnternal　Medicine，over all　the

residents including his seniors. He was given the award ¨Resident Physician of

the Yearll in the.Christmas party of the Department of lnternal Medicine.

AMDA-PHILIPPINESj　had　a　General　Meeting　and　Christmas　party　last

December　19j　1987 Saturday in valleverde Country Club. During this

meetin9，2 new members attended and expressed enthusiasm over the

ideals and activities of AMDA. Dr. vo9ie Martinez gave a report of her trip

to Japan. Some future activities of the AMDA were discussed such as the

　　Dr.Å.Husni Tanra,M.D･,Ph.D･，Regional Co-Ordinator　of AMDA　lndonesia has

just completed a special training in the pain clinic of university Hospital in

university　of　Washington，U.S.Å｡　Dr･.　Tanra，an　anesthesiologist，holds　a

doctorate of Hiroshima univer‘sity,Japan｡

　　　Pain，which means that a person is experiencing something harmful or

injurious，when　becomes　chronic（　pain　that　continues　despite　medical

treatment）is a complex problem with no easy solution. painful sensation

varies 9reately among individuals. Because of the many different causes of

pain and　the different ways pain　can affect an individual，the Clinical　Pain

Servieat theuniversity of Washington offers a broad approach　to trleating

dlronic pain｡

　　The Clinical Pain Service is a multidisciplinary service made up of a team of

university of Washington health professionals. Founded in 1961 by Dr. John J.

Bonica，an anesthesiologist， and Dr. Lowe11 E. White， Jr･，a neurosurgeon，the

service has served as a model for other pain clinics throughout the united

States and the rest of the world｡

　　The Pain Service，one of the university Hospital　clinics，draws upon the

resources of many specialists at the university who are interested in the

investigation　and　treatment of　chronic　pain　problems， These　specialists

include　members　of　the　Departments　of　Anesthesiolo9y，Psychiatry　and

Behavioral　Sciencesj　Physical　Medicine　and　Rehabilitation，Neurological

Surgeryj and Medicine. ln addition，a wide var叫ty of other professional

services at university Hospital are used.
