“Classic Christmas Cartoons” - Begins December 3rd

There’s a reason why certain stories, certain

ilms, even certain cartoons, become classics. It’s not by accident that some stories are here today and gone tomorrow … while others endure. Now sometimes that reason involves clever marketing; sometimes that reason involves some other anomaly … but more often than not, it’s because the story itself is … is so right.

Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the

Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Grinch, and Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town are among the classic cartoons of Christmas. Each one tells a story that addresses situations we face in life. God speaks to these situations through His Word, the Bible.

The December sermon series, “Classic Christmas Cartoons,” will include these stories as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus once again. You won’t want to miss this series and you’ll never look at these Christmas classics in the same way again.

Homeless Christmas LuncheonTwo of the top things that people think about as the Holidays approach are family and food. Celebrations just

aren’t the same without these things. In fact, the eternal victory celebration in Heaven includes family (brothers and sisters in Christ) and food. Very quickly you can think of the loved ones and tasty treats you would want to have with you in the celebration of the gifts of God.

Some in the community of Trinity Downtown will not have family or food this Holiday Season. That’s why we host a very special sit-down dinner for those who are experiencing homelessness. This year we will serve this meal on Sunday, December 17th at 12:15 p.m. Your help is needed to make this celebration a joyful one for these brothers and sisters in Christ. Here’s how you can help: Prepare a shoebox full of gifts and/or volunteer to help serve on the 17th (Watch for sign-up on TCB).Shoebox gift suggestions:

* Toothpaste & toothbrush * Lotion

* Deodorant* Chapstick* Body wash* Bar soap * Shampoo * Hand sanitizer * Handi-wipes* Gloves

* Ear muffs or knit hat* Socks* Nail clippers * Comb or brush * Facial tissues * Gift card (recommend

$10-$20 to Kroger, Walmart, Walgreens, McDonalds, or Chick-il-A)

* Snacks or candy

Lessons from the Elf“Elf” is the story of Buddy, a human raised by Christmas elves, who discovers

that he is, indeed, human, and has a father in New York City. As Buddy embarks on a journey to discover his birth family, he wrestles with issues of identity, faith, and where his unique talents it into the scheme of things.

This study will help you discuss the deeper themes of the movie. How can we discover and establish our true identities? What does it mean to have faith in things unseen? How does Buddy struggle with and ultimately embrace his uniqueness? What does the joy of Christmas look like?

Join Pastor Dorn for his annual Christmas movie Bible study for the feel-good holiday classic, “Elf.” This Bible study begins on Sunday, November 26 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 123 (Pastor’s Ofice). Popcorn is included!

Bring your bells! - all kinds of bells: big bells, little bells, tinkling bells, great clanging bells - and come sing and ring as we celebrate the upcoming birth of our Savior at Carols and Bells on Sunday, December 10 at the 8:15 and 10:50 a.m. worship services. Your bells will join in with the music making of the Trinity Handbells, Trinity Brass, Trinity Choir, and our own Trinity congregation as we sing the carols of Christmas and have an opportunity to hear special thoughts from some characters who witnessed the Christmas miracle.

After worship, join us for coffee, wassail and Christmas cookies in the Foyer. And, if you forget your bell, don’t worry, we’ll provide one for you!

Christmas GreetingsI decided to write some messages related to Christmas. Spiritual health is most important in our daily lives

and Christmas greetings are very much indicated in this part of our existence. These greetings are not my own thoughts, but are part of messages in Christmas cards we have sent in the last two years.

Finance Corner - December 1, 2017Thanks to the generosity of the members and friends of Trinity, we raised over

$75,000 to help members of our congregation that suffered property damage during Hurricane Harvey. Following the guidelines established by the Finance MAT and approved by the Governing Board, in October we distributed $64,000 of these funds to congregation members and staff, and to support the HPD distribution site. Per the guidelines, on November 15th we forwarded the remaining funds to the LCMS Texas District’s Disaster Relief Fund. Thanks be to God for your generosity of time, talent and treasure in these efforts!

Through October 31st, the Mighty Acts campaign has raised $1,544,441 compared with pledges totaling $1,602,510. The oficial three-year time period for the Mighty Acts campaign concludes November 26th; however, we will continue to apply gifts in fulillment of pledges through December 31, 2017.

At the Congregational Assembly on November 12th, the voters approved the 2018 Ministry Financial Plan which calls for spending $2.2m for ministry operations in 2018. This amount includes $250k allocated for debt reduction and for rebuilding Trinity’s emergency fund.

Your servant in Christ, Ron Lacy, CFO

“WORSHIP”

“Let us gather together as His children, His beloved...Let us meet around the manger and bow down before our King.”(B.J. Hoff)

“Through all the season’s shining hours…through all the season’s shining hours…through all the New Year’s blessed days…through all the years that lie ahead—May you abide in the love of Jesus.”

“May this holiday season truly be a celebration of that holy night long ago When God gave us His Son…When God gave us our Savior.”

HOPE in Swaddling ClothesI needed some supplies the other day and stopped in at Walmart. The store was illed

with the look of Christmas: wrapping paper in all colors; Christmas wreaths for any door; ornaments galore; Santa Claus pajamas; socks that light up and sing! I even saw a roll of bathroom tissue with reindeer stamped all over it. Christmas has deinitely arrived with all its splendor and busyness, hustling and bustling.

Did Mary and Joseph know, that night, what His birth would bring to this world? When I returned to my car, the radio station I frequently listen to illed the car with

music, “O Holy Night.” As I joined in singing the familiar lyrics, savoring the sound, I thought about what I had just witnessed.

“A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn…”

The greatest virtues faith, hope and love according to 1 Corinthians 13:13, give us the knowledge that when we have the faith, God delivers the hope, which demonstrates the love.

Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must

believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”

Have you ever mumbled under your breath, “I just can’t get my hopes up this time?” We’ve all felt it. We don’t want to wish for something that won’t happen. It is a human emotion we’ve all dealt with at some point in our lives. Disappointment is not something we want to experience.

Christmas is all about just that—HOPE. Hope wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. Hope that was born in Bethlehem one night. Hope that lived in the womb of a virgin woman. Hope that came to deliver a weary world and deliver a new and glorious morn. And that hope is Jesus!

One of the greatest gifts of the birth of Christ is hope. Christ brought to a hopeless world the opportunity of hope. The chance to live in eternity with Him. He brought light to darkness. And while we may walk around thinking we can’t hope, it comes, freely given, to a world lost in sin.

This Christmas season, unwrap the splendor of HOPE in your life. “Now faith is the assurance of things

hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1.Stephen Ministers are available to pray with you at any time but are visible on Communion Sundays at all

the worship services. They stand on each side of the aisles during communion distribution. You can be assured that all prayers are 100% conidential. We have been trained to actively listen and to care for others. Communion is a special time to pray and receive forgiveness and feel extra close to God. If you feel you need the care of a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Michael Dorn at [email protected] or 713.229.2940 or Ron Lacy at [email protected] or 713.229.2970.

Many Christmas Blessings, Linda Gray, Stephen Leader

Sincere Thanks and AppreciationDear Trinity Family and friends:We would like to express our sincere Thanks and Appreciation from the bottom of our

sincere hearts following Hurricane Harvey - from all the words of encouragement, prayers offered on our behalf (then and now), to the workers who helped tear out the sheetrock, wood loors and pack up what remained of our home of almost 32 years. Let us not forget all those workers who showed up to help and were directed elsewhere and the ladies who provided a delicious lunch too that day. Lastly, we are also very grateful for the generous monetary gift to help out as needed. We are truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful and caring group! To God be the glory!!

Thank you again! Kevin and Nita Juergen

Advent Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries In Love Came Down we see how the Heavenly Father spared nothing—not

even His own Son—to work out our salvation. Though we had rebelled in our sins and spurned God and His Commandments, He chose us—not for exclusion, but redemption. The Father’s love sought us out in our perilous condition and, in His ininite mercy, bridged the divide to our isolation through Jesus—the one Mediator between God and Man.

“Jesus came to be in our lives, a part of our lives, one of us. He came to be our Savior, and that is not a job someone can do by standing safely at a distance. Instead, He embraced our human nature—He was born, He grew, He lived, worked, and suffered, He died. And then He rose from the dead,” writes author Dr. Kari Vo.

The story of our salvation is a hard-fought victory. What began in a humble manger stall in Bethlehem on Christmas morn reached its zenith when Jesus—child of Mary, Son of God—was cruciied, died, and rose from the dead three days later. This is what God did for us; this is what happened when love came down.

Printed devotion books are available in the narthex and foyer or you can view them online at www.lhm.org.

Mighty Acts—An Attitude of GratitudeEnter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name!

Philippians 1:6aTrinity congregation has a long history of understanding what it

means to respond to God’s unfathomable gift of His Son by working to carry out God’s work in the world. Thanks to the faithful commitment and generous giving of Trinity members, we have reached the end of the three-year capital campaign We Declare Your Mighty Acts with less than $50,000 to go by December 31 to reach the campaign goal of $1,602,510. While it is dificult to say an adequate thank you, another cake ball celebration was held on November 12 to express our gratitude for your overwhelming love and faithfulness. We can’t wait to see the inal results at year end, and look forward to the future paths the Lord has in store for Trinity!

You crown the year with your bounty. Psalm 65:11a

Be in the WordAdult Bible Classes - Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

“Hermeneutics” - Led by Thomas DeVries Team - Library in Education CenterThe class is tailored to individuals who have completed their undergraduate work, may be married, and may be thinking about starting a family. The class topics have the underpinnings of traditional material expected in a Bible Class such as The Book of Concord or Church History. The class will go a step further by adjusting a liberal arts view (psychology, philosophy, the humanities, economics, etc.) and relating it to the topics in a way that is applicable to the life experiences and challenges common among people in their 20-30s.

“Lessons from the Elf” - Led by Pastor Michael Dorn - Room 123See class description on page 3.

“Loving Justice” - Led by Jim Cleary’s Team - Room 233God is loving and powerful. He is able to work against some of the strongest forces of hate in the world. You can imitate God’s justice by ighting against these same powers in your own life and in the lives of those around you. This study will challenge you to love justice as God does. And it will show you how to work for justice in your everyday life. Discussion-oriented.

“Reading Your Bible In One Year” - Led by Dennis Gray’s Team - Room 209This Bible class is designed to support and encourage you in your journey through the Scriptures. It is a spiritual journey from Genesis to Revelation! Through your daily readings, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will meet you in His Word. You will get to know Him and our Heavenly Father in deeper ways by the powerful working of the Holy Spirit through the Word!

“Reformation 500 and Luther’s Catechism” - Led by Pastor Paul Dorn’s Team - Room 206Luther’s Catechism was not the book of questions and answers with which present day Lutherans are familiar. Rather it was a very small book that contained the texts and brief explanation of the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, and the words of institution of the sacraments. Luther wrote his Catechism to proclaim the central saving message of the Bible, to be a guide for life, to be a weapon in the ongoing ight against everything that could destroy a Christian’s faith, and to give every Christian words to speak and confess the faith. For Luther it was important that a Christian read and study the Catechism daily, and yes, use it to warm one’s heart for prayer. The goal of the course is to strengthen our faith in our God who loves us and to encourage us for Christ-like living. Reformation 500 - a very good time to review the Catechism!

“Travels with Moses” - Led by Bill Fischer’s Team - Room 201Moses is one of the primary people in the Old Testament and his life and actions form the basis of much of our beliefs. While many people are familiar with Moses’ role with Plagues in Egypt, the Exodus, the Parting of the Red Sea and the Ten Commandments, there is much more to his life. The “Heroes of Faith” chapter of Hebrews 11 devotes more time to Moses and Abraham than anyone else. Our study will follow how God used this very human man to guide His people. We learn the life of Moses in several Old Testament books: Exodus, a small part of Leviticus, and parts of Numbers. Deuteronomy repeats many of the same incidents as Exodus, and we’ll look at some of them for more details.

A Life Quote for the Church Year –

December 3 – Advent I“The hand of God tenderly, intentionally forms every human person

(Isaiah 64:8). No life happens by mistake (though God’s accidents would surpass humankind’s grandest feats). Inabilities due to stage or state of life do not disqualify a person any more than our sins (Isaiah 64:6) disqualify us. Without our merit or worthiness does He make us each His own, on account of His Fatherly goodness.

Prayer: Omniscient Lord of all, reveal to us the wonders You bring out of every human life until we cherish them all. Amen.”
