coming more and more Christmas-ish. It is

time you started thinking about presents and

gift cards. In this issue you can read a useful

article about making cards by yourselves. And

nothing says Christmas more than ginger-

bread, so how about trying to bake a Ginger-

bread mudcake?

Oh, yeah, don‘t forget to visit Christmas Mar-

ket organized by our students!

Read our main article about boffering and have

some fun! I am sure you will like the pictures.

Well, winter is close and it is the best time to

enjoy good movies and go to the cinema more

often. In this issue you can find information

about the upcoming film „Autolla Nepaliin“.

As some start-up and entrepreneurial events

are going to happen soon, we have decided to

interview the president of our KyAMK Entre-

preneurial Society- PatteriES- Antti Viitanen.

EXCHANGE VIEW

4

Before I left to Ireland FOR exchange,

I was an exchange tutor in Kyamk.

This means that I have some experience

about meeting new people from different

countries, knowing that there’s the day

when you need to say goodbyes and not

knowing if you’re going to meet people.

The best before date is the worst part of

being a tutor, even though everything

else in it is quite awesome.

Now there’s one month left in Ireland for

most of the exchange students, expect

for me and the French students (hooray).

To be honest I have now realised, that it

is the worst feeling when you’re the one

who is in the different country. All the

exchange students are here in the same

situation, and the country becomes your

new home for four or nine months.

The atmosphere is quite depres-

sed here. People are sad about le-

aving their friends; end their Eras-

mus-love-stories and getting back

to their boring routines in their

home countries. When people are

not down, they are grumpy. This

means that during last few days we

have had unnecessary drama, and I

bet we will have more.

So enough with the moaning. How

do you cheer up people who are

depressed to leave in 30 days?

The obvious answer is to make

people think something else. I think

that the key to happiness is to avoid

problems, even if people think that’s

not the way to handle situations.

Great way to do this is throwing

a stupid theme party, for example

ugly sweater party. No-one can be

sad if they are wearing a Christmas

shirt with blinking lights! The other

good way is to cook together and

taste something new. Being mise-

rable is hard if your stomach is full.

Routines make the days boring al-

ways. If you need to have something

else in your mind, I think you have

to step out and do something diffe-

rent. I’m not saying that everyone

should get a sweater with singing

Santa Claus or force your friends to

ditch their vegetarian lifestyle. Just

doing something unusual, unex-

pected and new.

HOW TO:

Christmas is coming and what could be better way to wish Merry Christmas than taking

some time to crafting hand-made Christmas cards for your loved ones? Fast, simple,

cheap but awesome Christmas card.

mas songs.

2.Print a photo or a pattern for the card and the

seals for the envelopes.

3.Cut, paste, insert the cardboard, photos and

seals how you want.

4.Write a poem or just wishes to the back.

5.Drink more mulled wine and dance to the

pace of Christmas songs.

AUTOLLA NEPALIIN&STUDIO 123

Text:Mattea Näveri, Photos:Studio 123 & Autolla NepaliinThe next big upcoming thing that has been raising fuss around

Finland is Autolla Nepaliin, premiering on the 28th of November at

Studio 123(and other cinemas) in Kuusankoski. If you are wonde-

ring why this movie is such a thing here’s the gist of it...

In 2013, Juho had a dream. This dream grew bigger and he and his

friends set out on a car trip to Nepal. The main goal of the trip was

to help a woman’s shelter in Nepal and try to somehow improve

their quality of life. They decided to raise the awareness by creating

a movie. They raised funds to make the trip and the movie through

donations and crowd funding. With the entire movie goal set being

charity, they managed to get their funding. The profits from the tickets

sold in the cinemas will be going to Nepal. This movie is their great

adventure from Helsinki to Kathmandu, full of obstacles on their road

with their mind set on their goal.

This smart charity project, full of a man’s dream to make life better in

Nepal deserves your attention. Your viewing of the movie will help Nepal.

Studio 123 has been doing their best to promote the movie and en-

tice people to go there. Since not many are aware of the lovely and

quaint cinema in Kuusankoski, we talked to Elise, from Studio 123

to tell you more about the cinema.

Could you introduce yourself please, and tell me what is your

role at Studio 123, also why you work there and if you enjoy

your work?

I’m Elise Brandt, I run the daily operations here at Studio 123 (sitting in

the booth playing movies right as I write this, actually), as well as our

event cinema / movie distribution business. This is a family company

that my father started when I was 6 years old, so basically I’ve been

“working” here my whole life, officially from age 15. I’ve done many

other jobs and studied on the side, but this was always the career for

me, no question about it. If I could do anything in the world for a living,

I’d probably do this.

Please tell me a little bit of information and history of Studio 123.

The building is owned by the city, there was originally another

company here that had cinemas in other cities as well, and they

gave it the name Studio 123. Soon after they opened it became

clear that the place wasn’t profitable enough to support a full staff,

Page 7: Vol 17 Issue 10

INSIDER MAGAZINE7

so they pulled out after three months

of operating, and the city started loo-

king for someone to run the cinema.

My father applied and was chosen.

This was 1985. First it was just him

and my mother working here, she at

the ticket counter, him in the booth.

In a few years they hired others, and

now we employ part time some 8

people in all.

Do you have any goals for Stu-

dio123? Anything you‘d like to ch-

ange or improve on? What would

you say about Studio123 to encourage more people

coming there?

Oh I’ve got plenty of plans; time will tell which of them

are viable. But for now the main goal is broadening the

distribution business and making it efficient. I’d like to get

a new screen in Studio 2, and get some new tech toys here

but well… that can wait.On encouraging visits, our main

attraction (besides the movies) has always been the staff.

People feel welcome here, as they should! This can be an

expansion of your living room, only with newer movies,

larger screen, kick-ass sound and someone else to pop

your corn for you.

Can you tell me a few words about Autolla Nepali-

in, how you feel about it and what

would you say to people to en-

courage them to come see it?

I’m curious about it but have my

head wrapped around ten thousand

other things and other movies… and

can’t stop thinking about Interstellar.

I know Autolla Nepaliin is among the

first crowd-funded movies (Iron sky

being the first I heard of) and might

be the first fully crowd funded? I’m

not sure. I’m definitely curious but

the hype hasn’t reached me yet.

Text: Alena Kiianichenko, Photo:Daria Nikulina To continue the Giffee story, we would like to present another

member of it – Antti! In spite of being extremely busy with his

project presentation along with Daria in Dublin, he was really

kind to answer a couple of my questions.

First of all, what is your name and where are you from?

My name is Antti Viitanen. I was born in city of Porvoo between Kou-

vola and Helsinki, where I spend first 20 years before moving to study.

What have you studied?

I studied industrial design in Kyamk and I graduated about 4

years ago. After that I was working for Kyamk as a project worker

before I started my own company which was basically doing

design as sub contracting.

What do you think of the studying process?

It is important to get your studies done in time, but remember that

you are studying for yourself, not for the degree. Keep your eyes and

ears open for other disciplines, take classes outside from your curri-

culum, take part to student societies and choose your internship by

your interests cause you want to stand out after graduating! Choose

everything according to your passion and what motivates you!

ANTTI VIITANEN

Have you ever thought about moving to another town because

Kouvola is pretty notorious for being extremely boring?

I don‘t live in Kouvola, but for the time I lived there I enjoyed the

nature and of course student parties! I also spent a lot of time in

school‘s workshop creating something new and building stuff.

So, even though the city is quite boring I enjoyed my time. I feel

that it is a lot to do about how you make it and spend your time.

And of course travel to other cities on weekends helps ;)

What do you like the most about Finland?

I like the nature and walking in the wild and I like the entrepre-

neurial culture in Finland and how it is evolving.

Could you please tell us what is the main concept of Giffee?

Giffee is a cloud based mobile application which you can use to

send small treats to your friends to make their day.

How would you describe your partner?

Daria is one of the most talented and diverse designers I have

ever met. We also work with Ekaterina who is most organized

person and I must pressure this in our team cause we are desi-

gners so her input to keep us organized is huge! Diversity and

multidisciplinary in the team is very important!

“I drag myself out of bed each morning and find there’s no relief in waking.”

After the 75th annual Hunger Games ended with Katniss, Finnick and Beetee being saved by the

rebels from District 13 and Peeta, Johanna and Annie ending up in the hands of the Capitol the first

part of the Mockingjay sets the tone for a dystopian futuristic apocalypse waiting to happen.

Both fraction fight for superiority over the other mostly by use of propaganda.

Just like Catching fire this part of Suzanne Collins trilogy introduces a bunch of new important charac-

ters, like the rebel-president Alma Coin, brilliantly portrayed by Julianne Moore, and Cressida (Natalie

Dormer), employed by the president to make the propaganda films of Katniss to support the rebel

cause. At the same time all of the already introduced characters become more fleshed out, especially

up until now under-developed characters like Gale and Katniss’ little sister Primrose (Willow Shields).

As visually appealing as this movie is, it is mostly exposition for the big finale coming out sometime

next year. While we learn a lot about the characters and the state of Panem as a whole, the trailers

were over-selling it just a tad, as they ever so often do.

I am not suggesting that you should skip this part, but if you have the patience you might as well wait

until next year and go see the double feature which will, I hope, be as spectacular as this movie was

made out to be by clever trailer editors.

“And if we burn, you burn with us!”
