The Tshwane metro issued a warn-ing to contractors who were appointed to deliver electricity cut-off notices in Claremont.

This come after a resident of Claremont found a pile of final demand notices dumped on the side of the road earlier this month on February 8.

According to the deputy director of Media and Liaison, Phalane Motale, the service providers who were ap-pointed to deliver the notices in Clare-mont, had been identified.

“This means the process to hear their side of the story and subsequently determine any disciplinary action could now take place,” said Motale.

Motale also mentioned that letters had been written to the contractors, inviting them to a meeting where they will have an opportunity to explain their ‘unacceptable behaviour’, or the

circumstances which could have led to it.

Motale told Rekord that the metro was shocked by the discovery of the documents and had vowed to leave no stone unturned to ensure they get to the core of the matter.

“Heads are expected to roll if any negligence or dereliction of duty can be proven. Considering the metro subscribed to the provision that every accused is innocent until proven guilty, it is going to allow due processes to unfold,” said Motale

He also said that none of the con-sumers whose documents were alleg-edly dumped, had been prejudiced by the incident.

“The metro regards the intentional dumping of documents meant for the community, a crime. We advise residents to call the police if they come across anything suspicious,” concluded Motale.

The Tshwane metro is mum about the deaths of two aspiring police recruits who died earlier this month while taking part in a physical evaluation test in Pretoria West.

A recruit, who wanted to remain anony-mous, told Rekord they were required to complete a 2,4km run in the scorching heat in less than 11 minutes from Pretoria West hospital to Premos. Rekord estab-lished that it was one of the hottest days this year.

“Most of us come from disadvantaged families and it was do or die for us. We have never worked a day in our lives, or properly exercised and we had to complete the 2,4km race in under 11 minutes,” said the aspiring officer.

Rekord sent a number of questions to the metro police spokesperson, Console Tleane.

After the two aspiring recruits had died, Tleane told the media that an inquest docket had been opened, but so far the metro failed to answer Rekord’s questions.

Efforts to solicit comment from Tleane were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.

“Money speaks out loud, but your love for us spoke louder. I feel like a true princess, loved and cherished.”

These were the thankful words of 9-year-old Musa Sekoati at the official opening of the new Princess ward in the oncology unit at Steve Biko Academic hospital last week Wednesday.

Sekoati has been diagnosed with leukaemia and spends most of her days at the oncology unit.

The paediatric oncology unit was established in 1993 at Kalafong hospital in Atteridgeville, but the six-bed unit rapidly grew to 30 beds. The oncology unit moved to Steve Biko in December when Dr David Reynders became the new clinical head.

The unit has 25 beds, divided into five rooms for boys, girls, teenagers and smaller children.

The unit also has an isolation unit with five single rooms. One room has a hepa-filtration unit, which circulates the air. This was donated.

“The main aim of the treatment of childhood cancer is to cure. The overall survivor rate worldwide is about 70%. Various treatments are offered to children at Steve Biko such as chemo-therapy, surgery and radiotherapy,” said Fredah Kobo, spokesperson for Steve Biko.

The paediatric oncology departmentconsists of two paediatric oncologists, two paediatricians in training, two doctors being trained in paediatrics, oncology trained nurses, nursing staff, a full-time dietician and a social worker.

“Our unit is funded by government, so we are depending on donations to improve the environment our patients

Musa Sekoati feels like a little princess in the newly decorated princess room in the oncology unit at Steve Biko Academic hospital.

Princess room gives kids hopeare treated in to make their hospital stay more bearable.”

Judy Schoeman, unit dietician, said the sky was the limit and embarked on a jour-ney to transform the oncology unit into a fantasy world for children. She rounded up staff members and enough sponsors to brighten up all the rooms.

“I want children who are admitted to our ward to feel like they live in a fantasy world,” said Schoeman.

After collecting all the paint, Schoe-man had to find the perfect designs for each room, to execute the fantasy world she envisioned. “We found a brilliant graphic designer, Annemart Swanepoel

from Options A who changed our draft pictures into a fantasy princess room. All we had to do were sit back and wait for the final design.” Kobo said Belinda Watts from Kristy Watts foundation visited the oncology ward in September 2011.

They showed her the final draft of their princess room and a week later Watts phoned the hospital, saying the Kristy Watts foundation would sponsor the entire room. “The positive impact the room has had, not only on patients, but also on the personnel, made us realise that we were right. A beautiful room can make hospital stays more bearable,” said Kobo.

Seventeen people were injured in a four-vehicle pile-up on Hans Strijdom Drive near Benjamin Boulevard in Silver Lakes yesterday.

Several people were seriously injured and transported to various hospitals.

According to Netcare911 spokesperson, Jeffery Wicks, it is thought that two light motor vehicles and two mini bus taxis col-lided.

One of the taxis repeatedly rolled after the collision.

“Netcare911 paramedics arrived at the scene to find the injured strewn across the road after they managed to escape from the respective wreckages,” he said.

The cause of the accident is still unclear and will be investigated.

Gauteng premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, delivered her State of the Province address at the Uni-versity of Pretoria’s Vista campus in Mamelodi on Monday. She focussed on accelerating service delivery with a strong emphasis on concrete deliverables.

During her speech, Mokonyane addressed some controversial issues, including the state of the Health Department, the renaming of Pretoria and the contentious Gauteng toll roads.

Problems such as the prolifera-tion of potholes across the prov-ince and the increasingly disfunc-tional traffic lights on provincial roads were, however, not discus- sed.

Mokonyane promised to imple-ment a comprehensive turnaround strategy for the provincial Health Department to ensure that the de- livery of public health services becomes more efficient.

She told attendees that she had established a team to systemati-cally address weaknesses such as public health financing, manage-ment, procurement and operational systems, relating to the supply of medicines.

On the subject of toll roads, Mokonyane said the province’s approach to the tolling of roads has to be understood within the context of its overall approach to the development of an integrated public transport network.

“As the provincial government, we are conscious that a solution

must be found to balance the con-siderations of affordability and the impact on public transport, but also honouring our commitment to paying our dues,” said Mokon-yane.

She said the province had been working with a team convened by the finance minister, to find a sustainable solution and an an-nouncement on the issues would be made soon.

Mokonyane called for an end to the controversy over the renaming of Pretoria.

“We have to close the chapter on the uncertainties regarding the naming of Tshwane. We urge all parties concerned to make mean-ingful contributions in the best interest of social cohesion,” said Mokonyane.

Gauteng premier, Nomvula Mokanyane and the speaker of the Gauteng Legislature, Lindiwe Maseko, arrive for the State of the Province address at the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi campus.

Caxton besit by verre die meeste streeks-koerante in Suid-Afrika.

dat hy by die Moot-polisiestasiein aanhouding was.”

EditorialCOMMENT

South Africa’s public road transport system is in chaos and in some places it is non-existent or at the point of col-lapse.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is no existing public road transport system in Pretoria and that the only public road transport available in the bigger Tshwane area, which operate with a modicum of suc-cess, is the minibus taxi system.

Although the minibus taxis supply a reliable and cheap service, the ve- hicles themselves are dangerous and unroadworthy and the system, for the most part, is devoid of any type of control.

The Metrorail passenger service is operating with ageing stock on infra-structure that needs drastic repair.

The passenger bus service in Pretoria are, in the words of Tshwane’s execu-tive mayor, in such a state of chaos that he actually urged commuters to find alternative means of getting to work and back home.

The much vaunted Bus Rapid Tran- sit (BRT) project in the greater Tshwa- ne metro area has been temporarily shelved.

It was planned that the BRT roll-out would be done in phases, with Line 1 linking areas in the north, such as Soshanguve and Mabopane, to the CBD. Line 2 would reach out to areas in the south and east, like the fast de-veloping suburbs along Hans Strijdom Drive and Mamelodi.

South Africa’s ageing rail and road infrastructure requires massive invest-ment for the country to successfully compete in international markets.

Historical underinvestment cou-pled with poor maintenance, outdated systems and a lack of integration have negatively affected the country’s and Pretoria’s transport network.

The Department of Transport re-cently announced a proposed integrated public transport system, to be controlled by municipalities, with the City of Cape Town to launch a pilot project, must be welcomed.

The new scheme was however, greeted with much scepticism, whether the municipalities which have failed with their own systems would be ready to handle such systems with any degree of success.

Don’t blend inReadiness is the ability to be ready for

immediate action. A spiritually prepared army can impact a city – and even a nation – for God’s Kingdom. A spiritually prepared child can impact a school. A spiritually prepared student can impact his/her peers. A spiritually prepared parent, doctor, teacher, accountant, secretary or farmer can act as thermostat and change the temperature of the environment they operate in. God never called us to blend in, but to stand out. In Matthew 5:13-14 we read: “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing, but to be thrown out and trampled un-derfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

These scriptures say that our lives either have a positive or a negative effect. The choice is ours to make on a daily basis.

Salt is a preservative that can prevent rot

from setting in. Light can banish darkness and break the heaviness of depression and despair. In Acts 9 we read about Ananias.

He was spiritually ready when God spoke to him and his readiness impacted the life of Saul of Tarsus, who later became Paul, and who wrote two thirds of the New Testament. Ananias means ‘Jehovah was gracious’. Grace is the opposite of merciless perse-cution with which Paul first persecuted the church. By being spiritually ready, Ananias impacted the life of Saul and changed his life’s purpose and his destiny.

My challenge to you is: Stand out. Don’t blend in and be spiritually prepared.

MOTORING8 REKORD WESNUUS VRYDAG 24 FEBRUARIE 2012 www.rekord.co.za

The 2012 Punto is more stunning than ever thanks to the work of Fiat’s Centro Stile. In particular, the interior of the new model has been completely redesigned to represent the most evolved expression of Italian style, with top quality materials and superb attention to detail.

The introduction of the 2012 Fiat Punto brings the unmistakable Italian style that Fiat has become synonymous with and delivers it together with elegance and dyna-mism in an all-new package.

The 2012 Punto, for the first time in

Italian design at its best with superb detail

The All-New 2012 Fiat Punto: the evolution of a bestseller.

a Fiat vehicle, offers the award-winning MultiAir engine, class-leading emissions mitigation technology, innovative technol-ogy and telematics and an unparalleled commitment to its robustness and reliability with a five-year/150 000km warranty.

Although it is an evolution of one of Fiat’s most popular cars in South Africa, the Fiat Punto, the 2012 Punto intensifies the distinguished personality of the vehicle with an important aesthetic update. It includes new exterior colours and the seat upholstery and class-leading features and technologies.

The 2012 Punto is a car that arouses strong emotions. It combines intrinsic beauty with comfort, practicality and use-ability of a car from a higher segment. It’s a technological and tactile delight, appealing to all the right senses that give a car a soul.

Fiat has built a reputation for itself as a technology leader with technologies like its advanced normally-aspirated and turbo-charged MultiAir engines, technology that won the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo the coveted Best New Engine of 2010 in the Inter-

national Engine of the Year Awards. The 2012 Fiat Punto not only features a host of dramatic and stylish aesthetic updates both inside and outside of the car, but also builds

on the features that appeal to the modern buyer.

In addition to its design, mix of techno-logical advanced materials and textures, the 2012 Punto is spacious, with excellent front visibility, offers easy access and a capa-cious luggage compartment.

Having produced more than 8,5-million vehicles globally since the Punto was intro-duced to the world in 1993 (the year of the first launch), the Fiat Punto has been one of the company’s best selling vehicles.

The same holds true for South Af-rica where the Punto has been one of the company’s best-selling products since its introduction in 2005 and will be sure to continue with this Italian-built trendsetter.

On the outside, both the front and the rear have been thoroughly restyled, as shown in the attractive lines of the new bumpers and the incorporation of innova-tive and original headlights and taillights.

The latest design has also ‘stretched’ the car to a total length of 406cm.

PROPERTY REKORD WEST NEWS FRIDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2012 9www.rekord.co.za

Agency announces monthly winnersMulti Listing Services announced its January winners during their monthly zone meeting on February 13. The property agents are from left Dries du Plessis of Deo Swanepoel Eiendomme, Theresa Mthabathe from Terryem-jay Eiendomme and Jan-Viljoen Coetzee from Anneleze Eiendomme.

of vir huislenings kwalifi-seer.

Schools in Pretoria are reminded to register their soccer teams for this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup.

Registration for the highest paying schools tournament in the world in prize money, opened on Sunday.

Financial Services Company, Sanlam, the Motsepe Family Foundation and Ubun-tu Botho Trust urge every school in all nine provinces to register to compete.

The tournament is played under the aus-pices of the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa).

According to Mamelodi Sundowns foot-ball club spokesperson, Kabelo Mosito, young football players who participate in the competition will stand a chance to get recruited to the club’s academy.

“Not only is there a total of R3,4-mil-

lion in prize money available, but football scouts from our club will be attending as many rounds as possible in a bid to find exceptional talent to place in the academy.”

Sanlam’s sponsorships manager, Frank Louw, said one of the key objectives of the sponsorship is to get as many football play-ers as possible between the ages of 15 and 19 to compete.

He said this would improve their chan-ces of being spotted by soccer scouts.

“Players who stand out will then be recruited into development structures to be nurtured and shaped into professional footballers. To be able to achieve this, we need to encourage all schools to register no matter where they are situated,” he said.

Registration closes on March 9. The breakdown of the prizes is as fol-

lows:First place: R1 000 000, second place:

R600 000, third place: R500 000 and fourth place: R400 000.

The prize money is to be utilised for a development project that enhances or ad-vances the mission and objectives of the school or its immediate community.

This includes the building of extra class-rooms, computer centres and the upgrad- ing of the soccer pitch to mention but a few. Mosito said the Motsepe Family Foun-dation endorses the objectives and rationale behind the sponsorship.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ boss and mining magnate, Patrice Motsepe, initiated the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup. It was initiated through the Motsepe Family Foundation in memory of his mother and to recognise the integral role she played in his life.

Enquiries: To register in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, phone Nelson Belebesi on 011-567-2824.

Koos Venter

TUT was in daardie tweede helfte niks anders as hopeloos nie.

ervaar is.

Pretoria is eerskomende Maan- dag rugbyloos aangesien albei Pretoria se spanne wegwedstryde speel.
