OCTOBER SPEAKER REVIEW

October's Speaker was,MHS member, John Levell. John gave an excellent presentation on famous herpetologists. He described the backgrounds, research and even some personal quirks of such people as; Conant, Baird, Hebert, Perkins and Grace Wiley. Johns knowledge and enthusiasm was so great, it was as if he had known these people personally! John also had 'a terrific assortment of historical slides of photos dating back to the early 1800's, so we could finally see the men and women behind the books we still read today.

I must apologize. I was so impressed with John's abundance of information and historical knowledge that I found myself just listening and not taking notes. If you have any interests in learning about your favorite herpetologists just talk to John at the meetings or take a look in the library, you'll find Johns lecture note and a packet of great articles on snake charmer, Grace Wiley, a must to read.

HUSBANDRY OF CALABARS BURROWING PYTHONS BY

JOHN C. MELTZER

When I first heard about Calabars Burrowing Pythons, very little information was available about their natural history, captive husbandry, or propagation. After reading what I could find on them, I found they are rainforest dwellers, are very secretive and are fossorial. I've maintained a large colony of Calabars for five years and this paper is about how I've kept them.

All my original adults were wild caught. They came in healthy and with relatively few problems. I experimented with various methods of maintaining them. Following is the method under which they are currently thriving and reproducing. I maintain each Calabars in a plastic rubbermaid storage box. These are set up on a rack system with heat tape along the bottom of the cages, three inches from the back. The heat tape is ran through a rheostat which creates a 90 degree hot spot. The ambient temperature is 75-85 degrees. At night I shut the heat tape off an cool the Calabars to 65-75 degrees. For a substrate I use two to three inches of sphagnum moss. I dampen the moss and mist it at least once a week. I provide a large water dish and they soak often. Most of the time the Calabars are burrowed into the moss, over the hot spot.

I was initially told that Calabars are difficult to get to feed. I have found that they are extremely shy and large, quick prey frightens them. Mine eat well when offered live pinky rats. I feed them two or three big pinky rats each, once per week.

" I have "found the Calabars Burrowing Pythons" to be hardy and fun snakes to work with. I feel they are underrated and a certain amount of misunderstanding about their "captive requirements keeps people from "maintaining them and attempting to breed them.
