It was well received and appreciated by all the delegates. The Madras Section is planning to conduct a meet of student branch counselors and office bearers of the student branches on 20 th September 2014 at Chennai. This is to have a collective discussion to enhance the professional activities for the benefit of all the IEEE members. This will also be helpful to achieve stability and sustainability in the membership especially the members of the student category. Greetings,

The R10 International conference on Humanitarian Technology was successfully conducted

during 6th August to 9th August 2014 at Hotel Hilton, Chennai. The conference was conducted in

a truly international manner with very good participation and presentation of high quality articles

and papers. It was well received and appreciated by all the delegates.

The Madras Section is planning to conduct a meet of student branch counselors and office

bearers of the student branches on 20th September 2014 at Chennai. This is to have a collective

discussion to enhance the professional activities for the benefit of all the IEEE members. This

will also be helpful to achieve stability and sustainability in the membership especially the

members of the student category.

We look forward for varied events organized by the student branches with participation from as

many members as possible

I am happy to write editorial for the August issue. I join with chaiman in welcoming all

Student Branch Counselors for the meet organized on 20.09.2014. Our student membership is

very good and we have to do our best for serving the student members. We will publish the

proceedings of the meeting in the next issue. I request the Chairman of various socities to

provide the information to be published in the IEEE MAS LINK. I invite articles form the

members for publication. I require feed back from members for making this news letter more

readable.

SRI RAMAKRISHNA ENGINEERING COLLEGE

IEEE Member Drive Program 2014 The IEEE Student Branch College organized the program

for the second year students from 07.07.2014 to 14.07.2014.

Prof. S.P.Rajkumar,HOD-EEE welcomed the gathering and

Dr.N.R.Alamelu, Principal, SREC and Chairman; IEEE

Madras Section delivered the presidential address. She

explained about IEEE and its benefits.

Blended Learning Program in VLSI

The IEEE Student Branch & Department of Electronic and Communication Engineering

organized a seminar on “Blended Learning Program in VLSI” on 17th July 2014. The seminar

was inaugurated by Mr.Damodara M.S, Product Manager, CoreEL Technologies India Pvt. Ltd.,

Bangalore. Dr.M.Jagadeeswari, HOD-VLSI delivered the presidential address and Dr.N.Sathish

kumar, HOD-ECE, welcomed the gathering. 60 participants (including Research Scholars, PG

Students and R&D organizations) attended the seminar. The objective of the program is to allow

the participants to explore the Blended Learning Program in VLSI Design. He also shared

information about advance VLSI programming used in semiconductor industry.

. WorkShop on “ Placement Training and Career Development”

IEEE SB organized a three days workshop on “Placement Training and Career Development”

from 30th July to 1st of August’14. The training included various activities such as cracking the

interview, resume preparation, group discussions and mock interview. 234 participants from 13

Engineering colleges attended. All the participants felt that the workshop was very useful and effective.

At the end of the workshop, SB counsellor Ms.C.K.Swapna,AP/ECE delivered the vote of thanks.

TECHNICAL QUIZ

IEEE SB conducted a “Technical Quiz” on 11.07.2014.145 students attended the prelims, from

which five teams were selected. The team comprising of Rukmani.R(III Year ECE), Uma.S(III

Year ECE), Romera Joan.S(III Year ECE) and Brinda Manuel(III Year EEE) won the first place.

SB Counsellor Mr.A.Madhusudhanan,AP/ECE felicitated the winners.

SAVEETHA UNIVERSITY

Workshop on Image Processing

A One day workshop on Image Processing was organized by the Department of Electronics and

Communication Engineering, School of Engineering on July 23,2014. The workshop was

supported by IEEE Communications Society Madras Chapter. Mr P Subramanian, Associate

Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Aarupadai Veedu

Institute of Technology, Vinayaka Missions University, conducted the workshop. HE gave a

brief introduction to image processing and MATLAB. Image Smoothening, Image Sharpening,

Image Restoration, Image compression and color image processing were discussed.

Demonstration of the above image processing concepts using MATLAB was conducted.

VINAYAKA MISSION UNIVERSITY

IEEE Communications Society Madras Section & IEEE Computer Society Madras Section in

association with ECE Department, Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology organised a one day

Workshop on SCILAB, an open source alternative for MATLAB, on June 18, 2014.

MATLAB® is high level technical computing software that has been widely in use among

engineering community. It took vital place in many engineering course syllabus, particularly in

Electrical and Electronics branches. There are many institutions they can’t afford the huge

licensing fee and started looking for alternate open source software equivalent to MATLAB®.

SCILAB is an open source equivalent to MATLAB®. SCILAB was developed by INRIA

(France) for system control and signal processing applications. It is also a vector-based program.

SCILAB package also includes SCICOS which is an open source alternative to SIMULINK®.

The workshop was conducted by Mr Mahesh Anand, of SCS India Private Ltd, Chennai. Mr P

Subramanian, Associate Professor, ECE Department, Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology,

Vinayaka Missions University and Secretary, IEEE COMSOC Madras Chapter welcomed the

gathering and introduced the workshop coordinator. The workshop was attended by 50 students

from various Engineering Colleges.

AVIT, Vinayaka Missions University

Faculty Development Program on Image Processing

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Aarupadai Veedu Institute of

Technology, Vinayaka Missions University, Paiyanoor organized a faculty development program

on Image Processing during June 16-18,2014. The program was supported by IEEE

Communications Society Madras Chapter. The program had lectures by Dr.M.Manikandan,

Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai., Dr.R.Malmathanraj, National Institute of Technology,

Trichy, Dr. D. Nedumaran,University of Madras, Chennai and Dr. G. Bhaskaran, University of

Madras, Chennai. Earlier Mr D Vijendra Babu, Head, Department of Electronics and

Communication Engineering welcomed the gathering. Mr P Subramanian, Associate Professor,

ECE Department and Secretary, IEEE COMSOC Madras Chapter briefed on the FDP, the

Speakers and the topics.

SRI RAMAKRISHNA ENGINEERING COLLEGE

STAR INNOVATOR COIMBATORE 2014 – “SOLAR AND ROBOTICS”

The IEEE Student Branch, Lambda Edulabs, Chennai and IEEE India SAC jointly

organized the two day Workshop on 01.08.2014 and 02.08.2014. Solar and Robotics were the

two workshops conducted. HOD-EEE gave welcome address. Dr.N.R.Alamelu, Principal,

SREC and Chairman, IEEE Madras Section delivered the presidential address. Mr. Balaji

Lakshmanan, Founder & CEO, I Make Robots and Mr. S Naveed, Trainer, Lambda Edulabs,

Chennai were the resorurce persons. The main objective of the workshop is to make the students

to get introduced with the solar and robotics, its concepts and principles. The speaker of the

Robotics workshop explained the concepts and the operation of robotics and gave a brief

introduction about the industrial perception over Standards, Power and Ratings. Vote of Thanks

KNOWLEDGE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

IEEE Benefits and Awareness Meet

IEEE Student Branch conducted the event for all II year Under Graduate Students on 8th July for

ECE Students and 14th & 15th for EEE, Civil, CSE and Mechanical department Students. Mr. G.

BharathVignesh, IEEE Chairman, explained the Benefits of IEEE. S.Jayavidhyasri and

R.Gayathri, IEEE Executive addec more information about IEEE and encouraged the students

to join IEEE.

Guest Lecture on “Embedded System Design& It’s Applications”

On 11th July 2014, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering and IEEE student

branch organized the guest lecture. Mr.C.Balakumar Director/Engineering Software, VVDN

Technologies PVT Ltd, Chennai addressed the students.

Cake Walk through Technology

On 21st July 2014, Students of 3rd year (IEEE student members) have conducted a project expo

for the 2nd year students in order to inculcate the practical knowledge among the second year

students. They were separated into batches and given a project data sheet. They motivated the

students to effectively participate in gaining practical knowledge.

JEPPIAAR ENGINEERING COLLEGE

TALK ON CLOUD COMPUTING

IEEE Student Branch organized the technical seminar on 15th of July, 2014. Mr. Sankar

Nagarajan was the speaker and delivered the talk on Cloud Computing. About 65 students

participated. The speaker emphasized the importance and benefits of Cloud Computing and its

application in the real world entity. The latest technologies under Cloud Computing were

IEEE INAGURAL FUNCTION

The function was conducted on 08.08.2014. Welcome address was given by Mr.S.VinothKumar,

IEEE student Chairman. Keynote address was given by Dr. K.Sundararaju , IEEE branch

counselor. Prof.V.Kavitha, IEEE branch mentor introduced the office bearers. IEEE-women in

Engineering office bearers were introduced by Dr.S.Thilagamani, IEEE branch advisor.

Chief guest Dr.R.Karthigaivel, Prof/EEE, PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul addressed the

gathering. The session about “POWER ELECTRONICS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS” was

conducted by Dr.R.Karthigaivel, Vote of thanks was given by Ms.Indhu priya, Chair women of IEEE Women in

Engineering .

DIGITAL ELECTRONIC TEST

IEEE COMPUTER SOCIETY STUDENT BRANCH CHAPTER organized the event on

23-07-2014. 46 budding engineers from ECE, EEE, EIE, CSE, IT of our college attended the

event. event aims to improve the student’s foundation skills and knowledge. Among 46 students 4

First IEEE SB meet-19thFebruary, 2014.:AWARENESS PROGRAM

The session was headed by the Student Branch Counselor Ms. S.Brindha, AP-department

of ECE. Topics were covered as specified above, based on the IEEE All India Student Congress

held at Amrita University, Coimbatore last year (Oct 3rd-5th). The following topics were

covered:

Introduction and start up to IEEE by Asif Jalaludeen .S (ECE-A III year).

Directions to use the IEEE portal and digital library by Satish kumar .S (ECE-C III year).

IEEE STANDARDS and SPECTRUM by Anoop Monish .CH (ECE-C III year).

Student networking and SB visions for the year 2014 by Monesh .M (ECE-C III year).

The II years and III years of ECE, CSE and EEE were attended the program. A small quiz was

held to keep the members interested and IEEE goodies were given to the one’s that got the

answers right. By the end of the meeting student coordinators for the departments of CSC and

EEE were elected.

2013 IEEE Member-Get a-Member Section Award (22nd Feb 2014) Ms.S Brindha’s exceptional recruiting efforts in the IEEE Member-Get-a-Member (MGM)

program during 2013 have earned the Madras Section an additional award of $1000. She was the

first place recruiter in the Asia and Pacific Region. The Section awards were created as a way to

further encourage participation in the MGM program, and to help underwrite the Sections’ local

programs and activities.

SEMINAR ON WIRELESS BROADBAND NETWORKS

(26th June 2014)

The Program was inaugurated by Dr C.V.JayaKumar, Principal ,Sri Sairam Engineering College

Prof,A.R.Rajini,HOD/ECE welcomed the gathering . Mr.V.Sakthivel - Sub Divisional Engineer

of Rajiv Gandhi Telecom Training Center was the Chief Guest. A presentation was given by

him on “Recent advancement in Broadband Technologies and Wireless sensor Networks”. He

talked about the current scenario in the world regarding Broadband with statistical data. He

explained about the WiMax and Wi-Fi technologies and the challenges faced by the wireless

communications. He also highlighted the key features of Long Term Evolution (4G) and MIMO

technologies. Vote of Thanks was proposed by IEEE Student Branch volunteer S.Venkatesh.

SEMINAR ON KAIZEN ROBOTICS PROGRAM (15th July 2014)

Mr.Nivas Ravichandran, an active IEEE volunteer coordination committee member for IEEE

Region 10, was the chief guest. He gave a detailed idea about the usage and role of ROBOTS in

our day-to-day life. Students were also shown various videos about the working and role of

robots in automobile, food processing and many other industries. He also shared his vast

knowledge in the field of robotics and many newly invented robots for lot many purposes. The

seminar was really interactive, interesting and kindled the interest of the students on Robotics.

Nivas also motivated the students to utilize the IEEE membership for their self development in

the technological field.

i – VISION : An Outreach Program

‘i – VISION’ was an outreach programme towards society conducted by the IEEE STUDENT

BRANCH.. The objective was to offer advice and to enlighten the senior students of RCM

HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL about the options available after their graduation from

schooling. A set of 55 IEEE student members of our college volunteered to take part in this two

day outreach programme. The five major activities are:

Seminar on the possible aspects of higher education

Computer classes covering topics on basics of MS office, programming and proper use of

the INTERNET.

A mini project expo to motivate students’ interest towards engineering fields.

Sessions on computer assembly.

Demonstrations on safe house wiring.

213 students from RCM Higher Secondary School participated in this two day program. All five

activities were held simultaneously to cater the strength of the school students. At the end of the

two day program a valedictory function was held to honor the Head Mistress of the school and

one of the supporting staff for their assistance. All 213 students were provided with dictionaries

(Tamil to English) to help them in their vocabulary.

SEMINAR ON VEDIC MULTIPLICATION (26th July 2014)

The seminar was delivered by Prof. Augusta Sophy Beulet P, School of Electronics

Engineering, VIT University, Chennai. The chief guest was honoured by Prof S.Brindha,Student

Branch Counselor. The seminar provided a general idea about the arithmetic operations on

pattern logic with real time examples also discussed how these kind of algorithms are

implemented in hardware. She stated that these kind of pattern logic operations are far more

efficient to implement than the conventional method. She also proposed that there are sixteen

sutras in Vedic multiplication .and the importance of implementation of such algorithms in

complex calculations.

Report on Breast Feeding - A way for life

The IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group and Women Development Cell

organized the program on 04.08.2014 for the women folk in the college. Dr. S.V. Sudha, Head

of the Department, Computer Science & Engineering, welcomed the gathering, followed by Dr.

L. Usha, Director, Commerce Studies, Dr. N.G.P. Arts and Science College who felicitated the

gathering. Mrs. S. Sheela, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. N.G.P.

Arts and Science College introduced the chief guest Dr. Mariammal pappu, Professor,

Department of Paediatric Nursing, KMCH College of Nursing, Coimbatore. She enlightened the

young mothers and the to-be-mothers, with the benefits and importance of breast-feeding. She

described how a mother has to take care of different things while feeding her baby, like food,

hygiene, clothing etc. She also threw light on identifying a weak baby, differences between a

healthy baby and a weak baby. Dr. Thavamani D. Palaniswami, the Secretary, presided over the

program. Dr. K. Porkumaran, the Principal, felicitated the gathering. Dr. V. Kumar Chinnaiyan,

Head of the Department, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, joined the program. Dr. Mrs. P.

Abirami, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. N.G.P. Arts and

Science College proposed the vote of thanks.

IEEE INAGURAL 2014-15

The Chief Guest of program was A.Jawahar, Entrepreneur, Creative Technologies for low

power manufacture, a proud alumnus of TCE. He gave a talk about “Internet of Things”. The

IEEE chairman Rishi.S of Final Year ECE department introduced the office bearers for the

IEEE student chapter 2014-2015.:Dhiyanesh.R (Final year EEE),Ramkishan.GND (Final year

ECE), Aarthy.M.S (Final year EEE), Prashanth.MU (Final year EEE), Debayanbhattacharya (III

Year ECE), Revathi (III Year ECE). List of activities proposed are Presentica the paper

presentation contest, electro-wiz a technical whiz-buzz , Debug me, a debugging contest and You

are Recruited. About 19 events were planned to make the students corporate-ready and

technically strong.

DRAW IT!! ( 22.07.2014)

Draw and Guess is a team event in which each team will have five members. The event was

executed in two rounds. In the first round the participants were made to understand the rules and

moves and to think of strategies to implement .In the second round , each team were given a

subject , which is to be represented as a constrained drawing so as to make their team to find it

.The doodle revolution says, “To doodle is to engage in an intellectual, creative and physical act

that recruits many neurological networks simultaneously. This makes it a strong force for change

and a portal for imagining and inventing preferred realities” .The event was successful enough to

engage the participants for an hour with full focus and perform under pressure to find the best

possible solution. 30 members participated in the game

IEEE Madras Section organizes R10 funded Technical Seminar on

“Embedded Systems and VLSI Design”

The Students Activities Committee and Education Activities Committee of IEEE Madras

Section organized the Seminar on 18.07.2014. This technical seminar is funded by IEEE Region

10 and sponsored by IEEE Madras Section and IEEE MAS Young Professional Program

(Formerly GOLD). Totally 61 participants have attended the program, which includes 39 IEEE

members and 22 non IEEE members. The event coordinators were Dr.N.Kumarappan, Secretary

and Prof.S.Elangovan, Chair, SAC, IEEE Madras Section. Prof.S.Elangovan delivered welcome

first session on “Designing and Implementation of Real time Embedded Systems”. He explained

a case study about ‘designing and implementing of real time embedded system’ designed by his

team at Southern Railways. The second session was handled by Dr.J. Raja Paul Perinbam,

Former Professor, Department of Electronics and communication, Anna University, Chennai on

“VLSI Design and its features”. He discussed about the advancements of VLSI design and the

future opportunities in VLSI area. Prof.M.Venkateshkumar, Secretary, IEEE Young

professionals, Madras Section, delivered the vote of thanks. The certificates were issued to the

participants by Dr.A.Darwin Jose Raju, Chair, IEEE Young Professional Programme, Madras

Workshop on “Neural Network, Fuzzy Logic and its Applications”

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society – Madras Chapter in association with IEEE Student

Branch, Dr.M.G.R Educational and Research Institute, Chennai organized the workshop on 1st

and 2nd August 2014. The program was attended by 86 participants from various Colleges and

The IEEE Student Branch organized a One day seminar about “IEEE awareness program and

soft skill development” on 23nd Aug, 2014. Dr.N.Kannan, Principal preside over the function.

Dr. S. A. Sahaya Arul Mary Dean of Academics addressed the gathering. The welcome address

delivered by Student President Mr. J. P. Anish Jobin final year EEE. The chief guest was Mr. S.

Arun Kumar System Engineer-TATA Consultancy Services. Office bearers were introduced by

Prof. M. Bhoopati. The chief guest has presented the over view of IEEE usage. He had shared his

experiences when he was an IEEE student chairperson in his college. He had given a brief

introduction about IEEE and jobs related to IEEE. He had instructed us to make use of IEEE in a

fruitful manner. Then he had given brief seminar about soft skill development by relating simple

examples, he had presented the interview based soft skills.ogy. Over 100 UG and 25 PG

students, 30 faculty members where participated. The valedictory function was ended by

presenting vote thanks by the Training & Placement officer Prof. Preamanandh.

IEEE/WIE student branch conducted the function on 23rd and 24th of August 2014. 10 projects

from various fields automation, computer technology and renewable energy such were
